New material of Strenulagus solaris, a stem lagomorph, from the lower part of the Middle Eocene Irdin Manha Formation at the Irdin Manha and Huheboerhe localities, Erlian Basin, Nei Mongol, China includes remains of isolated cheek teeth, fragmentary upper incisors （dI2） and postcranial elements, reported from the species for the first time. The tarsal bones display advanced features, such as a wide calcaneofibular articulation surface and, along with an increase in hypsodonty, the new data document the early stage of lagomorph evolution in the Middle Eocene of the Erlian Basin. This finding is stratigraphically well constrained and probably predates that of the type material of S. solaris from the Khaychin Formation, Bugin-Tsav Basin, Mongolia.

Recent paleontological, paleomagnetic and carbon isotopic investigations have provided new evidence supporting placement of the Chinese terrestrial Paleocene-Eocene boundary at the base of the Lingcha Formation in the Hengyang Basin, Hunan Province, and within the upper part of the Nomogen Formation in the Erlian Basin, Inner Mongolia. Based on mammalian and ostracod biostratigraphic data, the boundary can also be roughly correlated with the contacts between the Baoyue and Huayong formations in the Sanshui Basin of Guangdong, the Qingjiang and Xinyu formations of Jiangxi, the Fourth Formation of the Funing Group and the Dainan Formation in northern Jiangsu, and the Dabu and Shisanjianfang formations in the Turfan Basin of Xinjiang.

Here we describe two newly discovered dinosaur eggs from the Upper Cretaceous Chishan Formation in the Qianshan Basin,Anhui Province,East *** dinosaur eggs can be assigned to a new oospecies of Stalicoolithidae,Shixingoolithus qianshanensis,based on the following combined features:the larger size of eggs,the uniform eggshell microstructure in the radial section,the smaller height and the larger density of radial microstructures at the inner surface of the *** sections of *** show closely arranged columnar eggshell units forming relatively uniform and dense microstructure;some secondary eggshell units and numerous sub-circular radial microstructures appear separately in the middle and inner parts of the tangential sections,*** discovery of *** provides new fossil types of Stalicoolithidae and represents the first dinosaur relative record in the Qianshan Basin,which offer accurate paleontological evidence of Late Cretaceous-Early Paleocene stratigraphic classification in the Qianshan Basin,Anhui Province.

The Zhesi (Jisu) Formation of the Middle Per- mian in Nei Mongol (Inner Mongolia) was commonly con- sidered to be a shallow marine sequence. Here I report the radiolarians found in the argillite bed of that formation in Zhesi and Xilinhot areas. This fact indicates a deep marine sedimentary facies persisted during the Middle Permian, and suggests that the ocean between the North China Block and Siberian Craton was not closed until the Late Guadalupian. The suture of this two blocks is probably extends along the Linxi ophiolite belt, south of the Hegenshan ophiolite belt.

Here we report the first discovery of a relatively complete skull of Choerolophodon from the late early Miocene Dalanggou quarry of Linxia Basin, Gansu Province in China. The skull is low and elongated, with two enamel-less and out ward-and-upward curved incisors and the choerolophodont molars. These characters indicate that the new specimen can be as signed to the genus Choerolophodon, as it is quite distinct from other common gomphotheres in northern China such as Gom photherium, Platybelodon, and Sinomastodon. The skull is also primitive in possessing laterally-expanded zygomatic arches, anteriorly-positioned orbits, weakly-developed cheek teeth cement, and retention of a P4. Prior to this discovery, Cho erolophodon was found primarily from the middle-late Miocene of Africa, Eastern Europe, and western and southern Asia. The discovery of this new material expands the known temporal and spatial distributions of this taxon and helps us better un derstand the phylogeny, evolution, and adaptive radiation of gomphotheres in early Miocene of China.

Based on a superbly preserved skeleton, a new anuran taxon has been named and described from the Yixian Formation (Upper Jurassic/Lower Cretaceous), Liaoning Province,northeastern China. This discovery documents the first discoglossid fossil from China, the earliest record of the group in Asia, and the only second Mesozoic discoglossid known from fully articulated material in the world. The family Discoglossidae is widely perceived as a primitive anuran group, but has no definite fossils found in collaboration with their recent distribution in *** new discovery from Liaoning extends the temporal range of the group in Asia back at least 120 million years, and provides valuable fossil material for study of anatomical details of early discoglossids, as well as of historical distribution of this primitive anuran group.

All Mesozoic mammaliaforms reported from China are briely documented *** forms can be divided into at least ive major assemblages:Lufeng,Yanliao(Daohugou),Jehol,Fuxin and Bayan Mandahu,ranging from the Early Jurassic to the Late Cretaceous *** the temporal and geographic distributions of these mammaliaforms are not dense,the records do reveal a patern that is generally consistent with paterns that have been recognized *** initial stage of mammalian evolution was represented by stem mammaliaforms or primitive‘triconodonts’from the *** was followed by the Middle-Late Jurassic Yanliao episode that showed a high diversity and disparity of mammaliaforms in which terrestrial,swimming,arboreal and gliding species were *** disparity,at least in molar morphology and types of locomotion,decreased but the diversity persisted into the Cretaceous,a period that was dominated by eutriconodontans,multituberculates and *** superb specimens from nearly all major groups of Mesozoic mammals in China provided a great amount of information that contributed to our understanding on some major issues in phylogeny and the early evolution of mammals,such as divergences of mammals and the evolution of the mammalian middle ear.A hypothesis on the transformation of the allotherian tooth patern is proposed as an example to illustrate the potential for future studies of mammalian evolution.

Understanding the role of agriculture in the development of human societies around the world is an important field of study with many unanswered *** a step toward that greater understanding,we have studied the archeobotanical remains at the Jingshuidun site in the mountainous areas of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River in southern Anhui Province which are part of the core area of rice cultivation *** analyses of macrobotanical remains and phytoliths formed the basis for the reconstruction of the subsistence economy of ancient humans at the Jingshuidun site from the late Neolithic to early historical *** our data are combined with that of previous archeobotanical work,we obtain a clearer picture of the development of rice and millet agriculture in the southern Anhui Province region,as well as the spread of millet *** remains and phytoliths of domesticated rice are present in layers at the Jingshuidun site dated to 4874–4820 *** B.P.(middle-late Liangzhu Period)and 2667–2568 *** B.P.(late Western Zhou Dynasty to the early Spring and Autumn Period).Moreover,macrobotanical remains and phytoliths from the site document the earliest remains of foxtail millet(Setaria italica)in southern Anhui Province,from a layer dating to the late Western Zhou Dynasty and the early Spring and Autumn Period(2667–2568 *** B.P.).These results suggest that the people occupying the Jingshuidun site used single rice farming as far back as 4874–4820 *** B.P.,and they began to plant millet by at least 2667–2568 *** B.P.,documenting the spread of millet agriculture to the southern area by that time.
