This study investigates the relationship between the persistence and the zonal scale of atmospheric dipolar modes(DMs). Results from the daily data of ERA5 and the long-term output of an idealized atmospheric model show that the atmospheric DMs with a broader(narrower) zonal scale dipolar structure possess a longer(shorter) persistence. A detailed vorticity budget analysis indicates that the persistence of a hemispheric-scale DM(1/1 DM) and a regional or sectoral DM(1/8 DM) in the model both largely rely on the persistence of the nonlinear eddy forcing. Linear terms can indirectly reduce the persistence of the anomalous nonlinear eddy forcing in a 1/8 DM by modifying the baroclinicity via the arousal of anomalous vertical motions. Therefore, the atmospheric DMs with a broader(narrower) zonal scale possess a longer(shorter) persistence because the effects of the linear terms are less(more) pronounced when the atmospheric DMs have better(worse) zonal symmetry. Further analyses show that the positive eddy feedback effect is weak or even absent in a 1/8DM and the high-frequency eddy forcing acts more like a concomitant phenomenon rather than a leading driving factor for a 1/8 DM. Thus, the hemispheric-scale DM and the regional or sectoral DMs are different, not only in their persistence but also in their dynamics.

Atlantic meridional overturning circulation(AMOC)plays an important role in transporting heat meridionally in the Earth’s climate system and is also a key metrical tool to verify oceanic general circulation *** OMIP(Ocean Model Intercomparison Project phase 1 and 2)simulations with LICOM3(version 3 of the LASG/IAP Climate System Ocean Model)developed at the State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical fluid dynamics(LASG),institute of Atmospheric Physics(IAP),are compared in this *** simulations well reproduce the fundamental characteristics of the AMOC,but the OMIP1 simulation shows a significantly stronger AMOC than the OMIP2 *** the LICOM3 configurations are identical between these two experiments,any differences between them must be attributed to the surface forcing *** analysis suggests that sea surface salinity(SSS)differences should be mainly responsible for the enhanced AMOC in the OMIP1 simulation,but sea surface temperature(SST)also play an unignorable role in modulating *** the North Atlantic,where deep convection occurs,the SSS in OMIP1 is more saline than that in *** find that in the major region of deep convection,the change of SSS has more significant effect on density than the change of *** a result,the SSS was more saline than that in OMIP2,leading to stronger deep convection and subsequently intensify the *** conduct a series of numerical experiments with LICOM3,and the results confirmed that the changes in SSS have more significant effect on the strength of AMOC than the changes in SST.

Temperature extremes over rapidly urbanizing regions with high population densities have been scrutinized due to their severe impacts on human safety and *** of all,the performance of the regional climate model RegCM4 with a hydrostatic or non-hydrostatic dynamic core in simulating seasonal temperature and temperature extremes was evaluated over the historical period of 1991–99 at a 12-km spatial resolution over China and a 3-km resolution over the Beijing−Tianjin−Hebei(JJJ)region,a typical urban agglomeration of *** of spatial distributions of temperature extremes over the JJJ region using RegCM4 with hydrostatic and non-hydrostatic cores showed high spatial correlations of more than 0.8 with the *** a warming climate,temperature extremes of annual maximum daily temperature(TXx)and summer days(SU)in China and the JJJ region showed obvious increases by the end of the 21st century while there was a general reduction in frost days(FD).The ensemble of RegCM4 with different land surface components was used to examine population exposure to temperature extremes over the JJJ *** exposure to temperature extremes was found to decrease in 2091−99 relative to 1991−99 over the majority of the JJJ region due to the joint impacts of increases in temperature extremes over the JJJ and population decreases over the JJJ region,except for downtown ***,changes in population exposure to temperature extremes were mainly dominated by future population ***,we quantified changes in exposure to temperature extremes with temperature increase over the JJJ *** study helps to provide relevant policies to respond future climate risks over the JJJ region.

Considerable spring precipitation occurs over South China(SC),a region that is adjacent to large-scale Asian topography and *** reasonable simulation is crucial for improving regional climate *** study investigates spring precipitation biases over SC and their possible causes in atmosphere-only and coupled Flexible Global Ocean–Atmosphere–Land System finite-volume version 3(FGOALS-f3) models with different horizontal *** performance of spring precipitation simulation over SC varies across different FGOALS-f3 model versions,with the best reproducibility in the high-resolution coupled model(25 km).In the low-resolution atmosphere-only model(100–125 km),the precipitation dry bias over SC is closely linked to overestimated surface sensible forcing over the eastern Tibetan Plateau(TP),which weakens the subtropical anticyclone over the western Pacific(SAWP) through regional circulation *** contrast,the high-resolution atmosphere-only model further amplifies surface thermal forcing in the Asian continents,causing intensified land–sea thermal contrast between the Southeast Asian continents and western Pacific,enhanced southerly winds and SAWP,and increased water vapor transport into ***,the reduced middle–high level cold bias over 10°–30°N in the high-resolution atmosphere-only model intensifies the East Asian westerly jet and ascent over SC,leading to enhanced spring precipitation *** high-resolution coupled model simulation not only reduces sea surface cold bias over the Bay of Bengal,thus intensifying the Indian–Burma trough and strengthening low-level water vapor transport into SC,but also enhances ascent over *** a result,the high-resolution coupled model better reproduces the magnitude and pattern of spring precipitation over SC than its atmosphere-only *** with low-resolution models,the domain-mean spring precipitation dry bias decreases by 11.2% over SC in the high-resolution atmosphere-only mod

The NATO agreement STANAG 4569 defines the protection levels for the occupants of logistic and light armored *** Allied Engineering Publication,AEP-55,Volume 2 document outlines the test conditions for underbelly improvised explosive device(IEDs),which must be buried in water-saturated sandy *** use of sandy gravel has some drawbacks,for instance reproducibility,time consumption,and *** paper focuses on the investigation of four alternatives to sandy gravel,which could produce similar specific and cumulative impulses:a concrete pot filled with water,a concrete pot filled with quartz sand,a steel pot without filling and a concrete pot filled with glass spheres(diameter 200μm—300μm)and different water *** impulses are measured with a ring technology developed at the Fraunhofer EMI.A numerical soil model based on the work of Marrs,2014 and Fi serov a,2006 and considering the soil moisture was used to simulate the experiments with glass spheres at different water contents,showing much better agreement with the experiments than the classical Laine&Sandvik model,even for high saturation *** results can be used to create new test conditions at original scale that are more cost-effective,more reproducible and simpler to manage in comparison to the current tests carried out with STANAG sandy gravel.
