Macrobenthos monitoring in the Gulf of Suez,Egypt

The biogeography of macrobenthic communities with large-scale differences in species distribution and abundance was studied along the eastern and western coastal regions of the Gulf of Suez to indicate biodiversity of benthos in relation to the prevailing environmental conditions. In general, benthos have a wide variety of species of mainly polychaet worms, crustaceans, bivalves, and other bottom invertebrates living in burrows in/or on the sediment surface. Coastal development clearly affects the ecosystem after the construction of coastal projects. The highest values of benthic diversity, evenness, richness and dominance are found at the Gulf of Suez （WG 1, WG 3）, Ras Gharib （WG 7, WG 8） and Ras Shukier （WG 9a） by contrast to others. The abundance of macrobenthic organsims along the coasts of Gulf of Suez can be arranged in the following sequence： other groups （34%） greater than crustaceans （25%） greater than polychaetes （22%） greater than molluscs （17%） greater than echinoderms （2%）. The biomass of benthic assemblages at different sampling sites can also be ranked as follows： echinoderms （52%） greater than molluscs （27%） greater than crustaceans （16%） greater than polychaetes （2%） greater than other groups （3%）. Some benthic groups or species indicated a distinctive correlation to pollution sources in the marine ecosystem which obviously increased in the coastal areas due to the extension of the coastal development. These activities needed regular information to establish database for the biology and distribution of marine benthic communities. The density and diversity of benthos are significantly affected by eutrophication at Ain Sukhna, whereas the benthos in the open Gulf of Suez do not seem to be adversely affected by pollution.

Microbial transformations of toxic monomethylmercury(MMHg) and dissolved gaseous mercury(DGM) at the lower levels of the marine food web are not well understood, especially in oligotrophic and phosphorus-limited seas. To examine the effects of probable phosphorus limitation(~PP-limitation) on relations between mercury(Hg) fractions and microorganisms, we determined the total mercury(THg), total methylated mercury(MeHg), DGM, and microbiological and chemical parameters in the Central Adriatic Sea. Using statistical analysis, we assessed the potential microbial effects on Hg transformations and bioaccumulation. Only in the absence of ~PP-limitation conditions(^(NO–P)P-limitation) is MeHg significantly related to most chemical and microbial parameters, indicating metabolism-dependent Hg *** heterotrophic activity of low nucleic acid bacteria(abundant in oligotrophic regions)seems responsible for most of Hg methylation under ^(NO–P)P-limitation. Under these conditions,DGM is strongly related to microbial fractions and chlorophyll a, indicating biological DGM production, which is probably not metabolically induced, as most of these relations are also observed underPP-limitation. MMHg biomagnification was observed through an increased bioaccumulation factor from microseston to mesozooplankton. Our results indicate that Hgtransformations and uptake might be enhanced under ^(NO–P)P-limitation conditions, emphasizing their impact on the transfer of Hg to higher trophic levels.

Embryonic and larval development of garpike from the Adriatic Sea

Although information about embryonic and larval development of garpike,Belone belone(Linnaeus,1761),is present in the published literature,the bulk of research concerns garpike from the northeastern Atlantic Ocean and the Baltic *** present work describes the embryonic and larval development of garpike,Belone belone,from the Adriatic Sea,and methods used for incubation of fertilized eggs in aquarium *** garpike is,as suggested by some authors,divided into subspecies,we conclude that some differences in embryonic development could also be *** the present study,eggs were fertilized using the dry fertilization method and were incubated in a tank equipped with aeration and constant sea water *** and content of dissolved oxygen were constant,and the temperature varied between 19.4 and 22.3°*** were spherical,measuring 3071.9±75.73μm in *** sacs were homogeneous and did not contain oil *** first larvae hatched 329 h and 47 min after *** of the yolk sac occurred 17 h–48 h after hatching and the total length of newly hatched larvae was 9.78 *** peculiarities observed in the embryonic and early larval development are evidence of an exceptional plasticity and adaptive potential,which could be considered as helpful features in extending the natural range of occurrence of this species.

Green synthesis of iron oxide(Fe_3O_4)nanoparticles using two selected brown seaweeds:Characterization and application for lead bioremediation

The exploitation of different plant materials for the biosynthesis of nanoparticles is considered a green technology because it does not involve any harmful chemicals. In this study, iron oxide nanoparticles（Fe3O4-NPs） were synthesized using a completely green biosynthetic method by reduction of ferric chloride solution using brown seaweed water extracts. The two seaweeds Padina pavonica（Linnaeus） Thivy and Sargassum acinarium（Linnaeus） Setchell 1933 were used in this study. The algae extract was used as a reductant of Fe Cl3 resulting in the phytosynthesis of Fe3O4-NPs. The phytogenic Fe3O4-NPs were characterized by surface plasmon band observed close to 402 nm and 415 nm; the obtained Fe3O4-NPs are in the particle sizes ranged from 10 to 19.5 nm and 21.6 to 27.4 nm for P. pavonica and S. acinarium, respectively. The strong signals of iron were reported in their corresponding EDX spectra. FTIR analyses revealed that sulphated polysaccharides are the main biomolecules in the algae extracts that do dual function of reducing the Fe Cl3 and stabilizing the phytogenic Fe3O4-NPs. The biosynthesized Fe3O4-NPs were entrapped in calcium alginates beads and used in Pb adsorption experiments. The biosynthesized Fe3O4-NPs alginate beads via P. pavonica（Linnaeus） Thivy had high capacity for bioremoval of Pb（91%） while that of S. acinarium（Linnaeus） Setchell 1933 had a capacity of（78%） after 75 *** values of the process parameters for the maximum Pb removal efficiency by Fe3O4-NPs alginate beads synthesized via P. pavonica（Linnaeus） Thivy were also estimated.

A growth model for a hyalid amphipod Hyale perieri in the coastal water of Alexandria(Egypt)

The growth rate of the hyalid amphipod Hyale perieri was studied on the bases of Ikeda'sgrowth model which is based on the inter moult period (IP) and moult increament (△BL). To apply this approach, laboratory experiments were carried out at three temperatures regimes (15℃, 20℃, 25℃ ) to gain accurate data of IP and BL. The total number of specimens used in this study was 86 at 15℃ , 24 at 20℃ and 70 at 25℃. The number of flagellar segments of both antennae of the Hyale perieri could not be used as an index of growth (instar criterion). The obtained results indicated that, the predicted IP of the specimens was inversely related to temperature and in good agreement with the observed values at the experimental temperatures. IP data obtained from laboratory-reared specimes are combined with ABL data to establish a growth model for Hyale perieri from its release from the mar-supium (1.64 mm BL ) to the maximum size (12.67 mm BL) as a function of temperature. The maximum numbers of consecutive moults recorded during the experiment were 13 moults (14 instar) at 15℃, 14 moults (15 instar) at 20℃ and 12 moults (13 instar) at 25℃ . The predicted life span for BL = 12.67 mm (moult 13) was 203.82 d at 15t, for BL = 11.75 mm (moult 14) was 138.94 d at 20℃ and for BL = 8.65 mm (moult 12) was 75.40 d at 25℃ respectively, thus confirming that the life span of the species is inversely proportional to temperature. Within the experimental temperatures tested, the optimum temperature for the growth of the species was 20℃.

Distribution and ecological risk assessment of some heavy metals in coastal surface sediments along the Red Sea,Egypt

The ecological risk assessment for Al,Zn,Cu,Ni,V,Pb,Cd,and Hg in surface sediment collected from the Egyptian Red Sea coast was evaluated using the Geo-accumulation Index(Igeo).Sediment Enrichment Factor（SEF） and Potential Ecological Risk Index（PERI） *** predominant heavy metal,aluminum,showed high concentrations along both of Aqaba Gulf（4378.8 ± 2554.1 μg/g） and southern part of the Red Sea（2972.8 + 1527.5 μg/g）.while it recorded the lowest concentration in Suez Gulf（829.7 ± 398.2 μg/g）.The determined heavy metal concentrations had the order of Al > Zn >-Ni > V > Pb > Cu > Cd > *** statistical analyses showed some correlations among the heavy metals *** international sediment quality guidelines were used to estimate the quality of the collected ***,the recorded average heavy metals concentrations were lower than those of the permissible contents for sediment quality *** Geo-accumulation index calculations(Igeo) proved that the investigated region could be classified as an unpolluted *** Enrichment Factor(KSEF) study showed high values in Suez Gulf *** single pollution index analysis of heavy metals in the sediments（Ci_f） indicated that Al,Zn,V,and Pb were of natural origin,while Ni,Cd and Hg were seriously affected by human ***,amongst,all the determined heavy metals,Cd and Hg gave moderate ecological risk indicators.

Hormonal Regulation of Oocyte Development and Maturation of Amphioxus

Using the electron microscopic technique and radioimmunoassay,the hormonal regulationof the oocyte development and maturation of the amphioxus has been *** results indicate thatthe exogenous GnRH-A can stimulate the oocyte development and maturation as well as the spawning of *** has further been revealed by radioimmunoassay that GnRH-A can increase the content of sexsteroid hormone,especially,estradiol-17β,by 1—3 *** increase of estradiol-17β coordinates withthe synthesis of oocyte into yolk *** results further justify that the hormonal regulation in theoocyte development and maturation of amphioxus is similar to that of *** is of great theoreticalsignificance for reproduetive endocrine physiology of amphioxus.

Modeling environmental sensitivity and risk assessment of PAHs in sediments along two marine coastal areas in Egypt

Modeling the environmental sensitivity index(ESI)is vital in the planning and management processes,especially along the coastal *** main objectives of the study were to define the main sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs),establish an ESI model,and measure the risk of PAHs on humans and the environment using various *** methodology of the research involved analyzing PAHs according to the EPA 550 methodology in sediments of the coastline in two important coastline areas in Egypt,namely the Gulf of Suez and the Mediterranean Sea,modeling the sensitivity of PAHs using ArcGIS 10.5 by integrating different physical,biological,and land use/cover factors,identifying the sources,and performing a risk *** sediment samples were collected from each *** produced sensitivity map could explain the highly sensitive areas along the Mediterranean Sea and Gulf of Suez coastlines(especially areas that were near drains'outlets,industrial sites,and sea ports).The highest mean PAH concentrations were Acenaphthylene and Fluorine in the Mediterranean Sea and Suez Gulf,***'s obvious that the individual PAH concentrations were within the ERL,ERM,and PEL threshold limits,indicating no adverse biological *** ratios of BaA/BaA+Chy,Flu/Flu+Py,and Ant/Ant+Phe gave an indication that most PAH sources were petrogenic(63.64%)and others(36.36%)were from petroleum *** principle component analysis(PCA)indicated a diverse correlation among the isomer ratios and LU/LC *** carcinogenic risk values were in the very low category(<10^(-6))for both children and *** most significant contributors to carcinogenicity were IP and BkFlu in the Mediterranean Sea and Suez Gulf,*** sources of carbon in seawater,especially with climatic change,may impact the aquatic environment and have impacts on organisms and coral *** it is highly recommended to keep shorelines and seawater free of oil spillage act

Long-term changes in sea surface temperature(SST)within the southern Levantine Basin

Knowledge of sea surface temperature(SST)behaviour is vital for long-term climate *** study highlights essential outcomes about the distinguishable and unsurprising warming of the SST along the southern border of the Levantine *** analysis is based on monthly SST data for the period *** southern Levantine Basin has undergone SST increase,during the last 71 *** this study,a consistent warming trend has been found for the analysed SST data series,with a rate of 0.04℃/a,i.e.,0.4℃/(10 a).From 1975 to 1991 the mean annual SST was 17.1℃,and this increased to be 19.2℃,over the period *** revealed two opposite trends of variability:a decreasing trend(−0.06℃/a)over the period 1975-1991,and an increasing trend(0.2℃/a)from 2002 to *** the period 1948-2018,positive mean annual SST anomalies had an average of 1.8℃,and negative anomalies had an average of−1.1℃.The lowest SST total increase was found from January to April,with values about 0.03℃,while the highest warming appeared from June to *** driving mechanisms behind the SST changes need to be more investigated,to understand the future trends and impacts of climate change in the Levantine Basin.

Polychlorinated biphenyl and organochlorine pesticide residues in surface sediments from the Mediterranean Sea(Egypt)

The distribution pattern of organochlorine residues in sediments of the Mediterranean Sea(Egypt)has been *** concentration of total organochlorine pesticides(OCPs)in surface sediments ranged from 0.11 to 50.73 with a mean of 14.52 ng/g dry *** ratios used(DDD+DDE)/∑DDT,DDE/DDD and p,p'-DDT/∑DDT,indicate the degree of DDT's decomposition and identify the fresh input of *** predominantγ-HCH and theα-HCH/γ-HCH ratios indicate that there is a fresh input of lindane in some *** possible sources of OCs in the studied locations were estimated using multivariate statistical methods(principal component analysis(PCA),cluster analysis)for the data matrix obtained from the OC's analysis of the *** potential environmental risk assessment associated with POPs measured in the sediments was conducted using the Risk Quotient(RQ).
