Chemical weathering in Manas River Basin:Driven by sulfuric acid or carbonic acid?

Carbonic acid produced by the dissolution of atmospheric and soil CO_(2)in water is usually the most dominant catalyst for chemical weathering,but a sulfuric aciddriven phenomenon,different from usual,was found in the orogenic belt watersheds dominated by silicate *** study,rooted in comprehensive field investigations in the Manas River Basin(MRB)north of the Tianshan Mountains,delves into the mechanisms and impacts of sulfuric and carbonic acid as catalysts driving diff erent types of chemical weathering in the Central Asian Orogenic *** analyses elucidate that carbonate weathering constitutes 52.4%of the total chemical weathering,while silicate and evaporite account for 18.6%and 25.3%,respectively,with anthropogenic activities and atmospheric precipitation having little eff *** estimated total chemical weathering rate in MRB is approximately 0.075×10^(6)mol/km^(2)/*** findings further suggest that,preceding carbonate precipitation(<10^(4)year),chemical weathering can absorb CO_(2).Subsequently,and following carbonate precipitation(10^(4)-10^(7)year),it will release CO_(2).The release significantly surpasses the global average CO_(2)consumption,contributing to a noteworthy climate *** study underscores the distinctive weathering mechanisms,wherein sulfuric acid emerges as the predominant *** quantity of sulfuric acid as a catalyst is approximately three times that of carbonic *** acid-driven carbonate rock weathering(SCW)is identified as the sole chemical weathering type with a net CO_(2)release eff *** CO_(2)release flux(5176 mol/km^(2)/year)is roughly 2.5 times the CO_(2)absorption by Ca-Mg silicate weathering,highlighting the pivotal role of chemical weathering in sourcing atmospheric CO_(2)over the timescales of carbonate precipitation and sulfate ***,this study posits that catalyst and transport limitations are the most plausible critical factors in *** interplay between s

Spatio-temporal patterns and climatic drivers of spring phenology in eight forest communities across the north-south transitional zone of China

Reconstructing forest and grassland cover changes in China over the past millennium

Historical forest and grassland cover changes not only are critical indicators for quantifying ecological and environmental change processes but also serve as fundamental data for long-term climate change simulations and terrestrial ecosystem carbon emission ***,because of limitations in historical data,quantitative estimations and spatially gridded reconstructions of these changes remain challenging,necessitating further methodological *** study focused on China's present-day land area over the past millennium,objectively capturing the characteristics and drivers of forest and grassland cover *** this basis,using the forest transition theory and the space-for-time substitution method,we depicted the historical deforestation process as an inverted“S”curve and developed a model to reconstruct historical forest area changes based on the functional relationship between the forest area and population size ***,a gridded forest allocation model was established on the basis of deforestation *** the grassland cover,we implemented regionspecific methods,such as the cropland area deduction method and the habitat constraint method,to quantitatively reconstruct historical ***,we obtained provincial forest and grassland area changes over the past millennium and mapped 10-km-resolution gridded data of forest and grassland *** results indicated the following.(1)The methods developed using population data as a proxy objectively reproduced the spatiotemporal evolution of forest and grassland cover in China over the past *** feasible methods offer a novel pathway for the quantitative reconstruction of historical forest and grassland cover changes.(2)The data indicated that China's forest area generally decreased over the past millennium,characterized by a“decrease-then-increase”*** forest area experienced three distinct phases:a slow decline(AD 1000–1650),a rapid decline(AD 16

Quantifying and Mapping the Effects of Ecosystem Services on Agricultural Competitiveness:A Case Study in Shandong Province, China

Quantifying and mapping how ecosystem services impact agricultural competitiveness is crucial for attaining the Sustainable Development Goals of United Nations. However, few study quantified agricultural competitiveness and mapped the effects of ecosystem services on agricultural competitiveness using multiple models. In this study, multi-source data from 2000 to 2020 were utilized to establish the indicator system of agricultural competitiveness; five ecosystem services were quantified using computation models; geographic Information System(GIS) spatial analysis was used to explore the spatial patterns of agricultural competitiveness and ecosystem services; geographic detector models were applied to investigate the effects and driving mechanisms of ecosystem services on agricultural competitiveness. Shandong Province of China was selected as the case study area. The results demonstrated that: 1) there was a significant increase in agricultural competitiveness during the study period, with high levels observed mainly in the east region of the study area. 2) The spatial distribution patterns of ecosystem services and agricultural competitiveness primarily exhibited High-High and Low-Low Cluster types. 3) Habitat quality emerged as the main driving factor of agricultural competitiveness in 2000 and 2020, while water yield played a substantial role in 2010.4) The coupling of two ecosystem services exerted a greater effect on agricultural competitiveness compared to individual ecosystem service. The innovations of this study are constructing an indicator system to quantify agricultural competitiveness, and exploring the effects of ecosystem services on agricultural competitiveness. Impact of Climate Change on Crop-cropland Coupling Relationship:A Case Study of the Loess Plateau in China

Climate change brings new challenges to the sustainable development of agriculture in the new *** grasping the patterns of climate change impacts on agricultural systems is crucial for ensuring agricultural sustainability and food *** the Loess Plateau(LP),China as an example,this study used a coupling coordination degree model and spatial autocorrelation analysis to portray the spatial and temporal features of crop-cropland coupling relationship from 2000 to 2020 and explored the impact law of climate change through geographically and temporally weighted regression(GTWR).The results were as follows:1)the crop-cropland coupling coordination degree of the LP showed a gradual upward trend from 2000 to 2020,forming a spatial pattern with lower values in the central region and higher values in the surrounding areas.2)There was a positive correlation in the spatial distribution of cropcropland coupling coordination degree in the LP from 2000 to 2020,and the high value-low value(H-L)and low value-low value(L-L)agglomerations continued to expand eastward,while the spatial and temporal evolution of the high value-high value(H-H)and low value-high value(L-H)agglomerations was not obvious.3)The impacts of climatic elements on crop-cropland coupling coordination degree in the LP showed strong heterogeneity in time *** inhibitory impacts of summer days(SU)and frost days(FD)accounted for a higher proportion,while the annual average temperature(TEM)had both promoting and inhibiting *** impacts proportion and intensity of extreme heavy precipitation day(R25),continuous drought days(CDD),and annual precipitation(PRE)all experienced significant changes.4)In space,the impacts of SU and FD on the crop-cropland coupling coordination degree varied with latitude and *** adaptability of the LP to R25 gradually strengthened,and the extensions of CDD and increase of PRE led to the increasing inhibition beyond the eastern region of LP,and TEM sh

The Tourist Plastic Footprint:A New Framework to Identify the Contributions of Tourists to Plastic Pollution

Tourism-related plastic waste poses a significant threat to ecosystems worldwide,underscoring the need for effective tools for measuring its generation and informing decision-making and *** paper introduces the concept of the tourist plastic footprint through a conceptual framework analysis and proposes a measurement methodology that uses a time-geography *** data were collected from Fragrant Hills Park in Beijing and analyzed using statistical *** findings reveal that the plastic footprint of tourists at Fragrant Hills Park averages 10.04±0.32 items per capita per *** waste consists of 27 distinct components,with the key contributors including plastic garbage bags(17.12%),plastic food packaging(12.48%),and tableware packaging(9.96%).Plastic garbage bags are predominantly discarded in hotel settings,while tableware packaging is primarily disposed of in restaurants outside the scenic *** food packaging is discarded in various locations,including the scenic area,transportation hubs,and *** study enhances the tourism ecological footprint literature by providing deeper insights into the plastic consumption of tourists and offering a structured framework for quantifying plastic *** practical application,it offers valuable guidance for decision-makers in tourist destinations who aim to improve their plastic pollution control measures.

Heavy metal(loid)(HM)pollution in agricultural soils has become an environmental concern in antimony(Sb)mining ***,priority pollution sources identification and deep understanding of environmental risks of HMs face great challenges due to multiple and complex pollution sources ***,an integrated approach was conducted to distinguish pollution sources and assess human health risk(HHR)and ecological risk(ER)in a typical Sb mining watershed in Southern *** approach combines absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression(APCS-MLR)and positivematrix factorization(PMF)models with ER and HHR *** pollution sources were distinguished for both models,and APCS-MLR model was more accurate and *** HM concentration source was natural source(39.1%),followed by industrial and agricultural activities(23.0%),unknown sources(21.5%)and Sb mining and smelting activities(16.4%).Although natural source contributed the most to HM concentrations,it did not pose a significant *** and agricultural activities predominantly contributed to ER,and attention should be paid to Cd and *** mining and smelting activities were primary anthropogenic sources of HHR,particularly Sb and As *** ER and HHR assessments,Sb mining and smelting,and industrial and agricultural activities are critical sources,causing serious ecological and health *** study showed the advantages of multiple receptor model application in obtaining reliable source identification and providing better source-oriented risk *** pollution management,such as regulating mining and smelting and implementing soil remediation in polluted agricultural soils,is strongly recommended for protecting ecosystems and humans.

Can Anti-poverty Policies Improve Livelihood Sustainability?An Empirical Study from the Perspective of Farmers’Perceptions

In recent years,an ambitious development policy named the targeted poverty alleviation policy has been implemented in China,and it has achieved remarkable *** whether the smallholder farmers raised out of extreme poverty due to this policy have achieved sustainable livelihoods remains *** study developed a livelihood sustainability index that can comprehensively assess farmers’livelihoods,constructed an analytical model of the direct and indirect impacts of policy measures on livelihood sustainability using the farmer’s perceptions of those policies as a mediator,and created a policy perception elasticity factor to screen the contributions of policy measures to the improvement of livelihood *** on these theoretical advances,a case study of an indigenous community on the Tibetan Plateau was *** results show that this policy has contributed to improving farmers’livelihood sustainability in the case areas,especially in terms of livelihood assets and livelihood outcomes,through direct encouragement and indirect influences based on the vulnerability *** China’s era of“post-targeted poverty alleviation”,the findings from this case study indicate that relevant future policies should attach importance to institutional reform and staff management,and establish practical actions to cope with the uncertainty of the vulnerability context.

Latitudinal patterns of tree β-diversity and relevant ecological processes vary across spatial extents in forests of southeastern China
