Methane, an abundant one-carbon(C_(1)) resource, is extensively used in the industrial production of vital fuels and value-added chemicals. However, current industrial methane conversion technologies are energy-and carbon-intensive, mainly due to the high activation energy required to break the inert C–H bond, low selectivity, and problematic side reactions, including CO_(2)emissions and coke deposition. Electrochemical conversion of methane(ECM) using intermittent renewable energy offers an attractive solution, due to its modular reactor design and operational flexibility across a broad spectrum of temperatures and pressures. This review emphasizes conversion pathways of methane in various reaction systems, highlighting the significance and advantages of ECM in facilitating a sustainable artificial carbon cycle. This work provides a comprehensive overview of conventional methane activation mechanisms and delineates the complete pathways of methane conversion in electrolysis contexts. Based on surface/interface chemistry, this work systematically analyzes proposed reaction pathways and corresponding strategies to enhance ECM efficiency towards various target products, including syngas, hydrocarbons, oxygenates, and advanced carbon materials. The discussion also encompasses opportunities and challenges for the ECM process, including insights into ECM pathways, rational electrocatalyst design, establishment of benchmarking protocols, electrolyte engineering, enhancement of CH4conversion rates, and minimization of CO_(2)emission.

The deep thermal structure of the lithosphere in the northwestern south china sea and its control on the shallow tectonics

The northwestern sub-basin of south china sea(SCS)is a unique tectonic unit formed in the early spreading of the *** northwestern Sub-basin has a series of complex geological structures such as seamounts and fault zones surrounded by the Xisha Trough,the Zhongsha Massif,and the Pearl River *** extensional structures and magmatic activity in the northwestern sub-basin are closely related to the lithospheric structure and its ***,details of the deep lithosphere structure are still poorly ***,we obtained detailed data of water and Moho depth using sonar buoys,Extended Spread Profiles(ESP),Ocean Bottom Seismometer(OBS),both Multi-beam and land-sea joint seismic surveys in the northwestern sub-basin and its surrounding *** we adopted a thermal isostasy method to calculate the depth of the Lithosphere-Asthenosphere Boundary(LAB)in the northwestern sub-basin of the SCS and its surrounding *** show that the range of LAB depth is~25–110 *** shallowest burial depth is 25–60 km occurring in the ocean *** depth increases to 60–110 km toward the continental *** lithospheric structure on the north and south sides of the Xisha Trough is symmetrical and shows the deep structure and thermal features of aborted *** LAB depth in the Zhongsha Trough and the Zhongsha Massif increased from 60 to 70 km southwestwards,consistent with the trend of surface *** LAB depth to the west side of the Pearl River Valley is 60–80 km,and the thinning of the lithosphere is related to the distribution of faults,depressions and the magmatic *** LAB depth in the northwestern sub-basin and the eastern subbasin is less than 60 km with the thinnest part being less than 46 *** ocean drilling,seismic investigation,and seafloor topography,we show that the ocean basin of the northwestern sub-basin of the SCS locates within the 46 km isobath of the *** formation of the rifted valleys and discrete blocks s

The role of biocrusts in nitrogen cycling on the tropical reef islands,south china sea

Harboring polyextremotolerant microbial topsoil communities,biological soil crusts(biocrusts)occur across various climatic zones,and have been well studied in the terrestrial ***,little is known about the functional metabolic potential of microbial communities involved in the biogeochemical processes during the early succession of biocrusts on the tropical reef *** collected 26 biocrusts and bare soil samples from the Xisha Islands and Nansha Islands,and applied a functional gene array(GeoChip 5.0)to reveal nitrogen(N)cycling processes involved in these *** physicochemical measurement and enzyme activity assay were utilized to characterize the soil *** revealed the composition of N-cycling functional genes in biocrusts was distinct from that in bare ***,microorganisms in biocrusts showed lower functional potential related to ammonification,denitrification,N assimilation,nitrification,N fixation,and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium compared to bare *** the abundance of nifH gene was lower in biocrusts,nitrogenase activity was significantly higher compared to that in bare ***,soil physicochemical properties(i.e.,soil available copper,soil ammonia N and pH)and soil biological properties(i.e.,β-glucosidase,fluorescein diacetate hydrolase,alkaline protease,urease,alkaline phosphatase,catalase and chlorophyll a)correlated to the N-cycling functional genes *** N and ammonia N were more abundant in biocrusts than bare soil,while pH value was higher in bare *** results suggested biocrusts play an important role in N-cycling in coral sand soil,and will be helpful in understanding the development and ecological functions of biocrusts on tropical reef islands.

Response of coralline algae Porolithon onkodes to elevated seawater temperature and reduced pH

Coralline algae(CA),a type of primary calcifying producer presented in coastal ecosystems,are considered one of the highly sensitive organisms to marine environmental ***,experimental studies on coralline algae responses to elevated seawater temperature and reduced pH have documented either contradictory or opposite *** this study,we analysed the growth and physiological responses of coralline algae Porolithon onkodes to the elevated temperature(30.8°C)and reduced pH(7.8).The aim of this analysis was to observe the direct and combined effects,while elucidating the growth and photosynthesis in this *** was demonstrated that the algae thallus growth rate and photosynthesis under elevated temperature were depressed by 21.5%and 14.9%*** pCO2 enhanced the growth and photosynthesis of the thallus at ambient temperature,while they were deceased when both temperature and pCO2 were *** is among the most sensitive organisms to ocean acidification(OA)because of their precipitate high *** hypothesize that coralline algae could increase their calcification rate in order to counteract the effects of moderate acidification,but offset by the effect of elevated ***,our results also support the conclusion that global warming(GW)is a stronger threat to algal performance than *** findings are also proposed that coralline algae may be more resilient under OA than GW.

Syngnathids(seahorses, pipefishes and seadragons) exhibit an array of morphological innovations including loss of pelvic fins, a toothless tubular mouth and male pregnancy. They comprise two subfamilies:Syngnathinae and Nerophinae. Genomes of three Syngnathinae members have been analyzed *** this study, we have sequenced the genome of a Nerophinae member, the Manado pipefish(Microphis manadensis), which has a semi-enclosed brood pouch. Comparative genomic analysis revealed that the molecular evolutionary rate of the four syngnathids is higher than that of other teleosts. The loss of all but one P/Q-rich SCPP gene in the syngnathids suggests a role for the lost genes in dentin and enameloid formation in teleosts. Genome-wide comparison identified a set of 118 genes with parallel identical amino acid substitutions in syngnathids and placental mammals. Association of some of these genes with placental and embryonic development in mammals suggests a role for them in syngnathid pregnancy.

High-resolution multichannel seismic data enables the discovery of a previous,undocumented submarine canyon(Huaguang Canyon)in the Qiongdongnan Basin,northwest south china *** Huaguang Canyon with a NW orientation is 140 km in length,and 2.5 km to 5 km in width in its upper reach and 4.6 km to 9.5 km in width in its lower *** head of the Huaguang Canyon is close to the Xisha carbonate platform and its tail is adjacent to the central *** buried submarine canyon is formed by gravity flows from the Xisha carbonate platform when the sea level dropped in the early stage of the late Miocene(~10.5 Ma).The internal architecture of the Huaguang Canyon is mainly characterized by high amplitude reflections,indicating that this ancient submarine canyon was filled with coarse-grained *** sediment was principally scourced from the Xisha carbonate *** contrast to other buried large-scale submarine canyons(central canyon and Zhongjian Canyon)in the Qiongdongnan Basin,the Huaguang Canyon displays later formation time,smaller width and length,and single sediment *** coarse-grained deposits within Huaguang Canyon provide a good environment for reserving oil and gas,and the muddy fillings in Huaguang Canyon have been identified as regional ***,Huaguang Canyon is potential area for future hydrocarbon exploration in the northwest south china *** results may contribute to a better understanding of the evolution of submarine canyons formed in carbonate environment.

Effects of daily nitrogen and phosphorus input on planktonic community metabolism in a semi-enclosed bay by mesocosm experiment

Planktonic metabolism plays an important role in affecting the energy transportation and carbon cycle of the marine ***,its regulation mechanism remains unclear under the continuously exogenous nutrient inputs in nearshore *** this study,a mesocosm experiment was conducted in a semi-enclosed bay,the Daya Bay,to explore the responses of plankton metabolic balance and community structure to a concentration gradient of daily nitrogen and phosphorus *** results showed that nutrient enrichments promoted phytoplankton biomass,total primary production,and community respiration,and the promoting effect enhanced alongwith the increase of nutrient ***,the net community production fluctuated more violently between autotrophic and heterotrophic with the increase of nutrient inputs and tended to be more heterotrophic from the 5 th day to the 10 th day of the *** addition,the daily flux of nitrogen and phosphorus,2μmol/(L·d)and 0.066μmol/(L·d),respectively,could be regarded as a potential threshold for ecosystem stability and health,since most of the ecological characteristics related to plankton structure and function have undergone significant changes when the nutrient level is higher than *** the nearshore enclosed or semi-enclosed waters,nutrient from continuous terrigenous input is likely to be concentrated and exceed this level,indicating the ecological risks due to the metabolic unbalance and the deterioration of plankton community structure.

Intra-trench variations in flexural bending of the subducting Pacific Plate along the Tonga-Kermadec Trench

We conducted a detailed analysis of along-trench variations in the flexural bending of the subducting Pacific Plate at the Tonga-Kermadec *** were conducted to obtain best-fitting solutions of trench-axis loadings and variations in the effective elastic plate thickness for the analyzed flexural bending *** of the analyses revealed significant along-trench variations in plate flexural bending:the trench relief(W0)of 1.9 to 5.1 km;trench-axis vertical loading(V0)of-0.5×10^12 to 2.2×10^12 N/m;axial bending moment(M0)of 0.1×10^17 to 2.2×10^17 N;effective elastic plate thickness seaward of the outer-rise region(Te^M)of 20 to 65 km,trench-ward of the outer-rise(Te^M)of 11 to 33 km,and the transition distance(Xr)of 20 to 95 *** Horizon Deep,the second greatest trench depth in the world,has the greatest trench relief(W0 of 5.1km)and trench-axis loading(V0 of 2.2×10^12N/m);these values are only slightly smaller than that of the Challenger Deep(W0 of 5.7km and V0 of 2.9×10^12N/m)and similar to that of the Sirena Deep(W0 of 5.2 km and V0 of 2.0×10^12 N/m)of the Mariana Trench,suggesting that these deeps are linked to great flexural bending of the subducting *** using three independent methods,i.e.,the/inversion,the flexural curvature/yield strength envelope analysis,and the elasto-plastic bending model with normal faults,all yielded similar average Te reduction of 28%-36% and average Te reduction area S△Te of 1195-1402 km^2 near the trench *** calculated brittle yield zone depth from the flexural curvature/yield strength envelope analysis is also consistent with the distribution of the observed normal faulting *** of the Manila,Philippine,Tonga-Kermadec,Japan,and Mariana Trenches revealed that the average values Te^M of Te^M and both in general increase with the subducting plate age.

Oceanic plateaus are a significant type of large igneous provinces in the oceans,providing insights to regional tectonic events and mantle *** three world's largest oceanic plateaus,the Ontong Java Plateau,the Kerguelen Plateau and the Shatsky Rise,are representatives in displaying extraordinary fluxes of magma from mantle to *** description incorporating transdisciplinary observations on marine geology,geophysics and geochemistry allow us to test the two lively-debated oceanic plateau formation hypotheses(mantle plume and plate boundary models).Predictions from either hypothesis merely obtain partial *** is therefore unclear to differentiate one model from another one regarding the oceanic plateau *** comparisons of the three oceanic plateaus show many commonalities and even more differences in their formation and *** diversity signifies one may not be typical of ***,several key common features,i.e.,massive and rapid eruption and near-ridge formation setting,imply that the lithospheric volcanic emplacement of oceanic plateaus was controlled by seafloor spreading despite a mantle plume exists *** a coincidence of mantle plume and spreading ridge occurs,it may indicate a plume-ridge *** possible mechanism is that spreading ridge is dragged by a plume and migrates to the location of the *** possibility is that the asthenosphere is fed by a plume nearby and generates melting anomalies along the spreading ridge.
