Retinal ganglion cell complex changes using spectral domain optical coherence tomography in diabetic patients without retinopathy

AIM：To assess the ganglion cell complex（GCC）thickness in diabetic eyes without retinopathy. METHODS：Two groups included 45 diabetic eyes without retinopathy and 21 non diabetic eyes. All subjects underwent full medical and ophthalmological history,full ophthalmological examination,measuring GCC thickness and central foveal thickness（CFT）using the RTVue~？ spectral domainoptical coherence tomography（SD-OCT）,and HbA1C ***：GCC focal loss volume（FLV%）was significantly more in diabetic eyes（22.2% below normal）than normal eyes（P=0.024）. No statistically significant difference was found between the diabetic group and the control group regarding GCC global loss volume（GLV%）（P=0.160）. CFT was positively correlated to the average,superior and inferior GCC（P=0.001,0.000 and 0.001 respectively）and negatively correlated to GLV% and FLV%（P=0.002 and0.031 respectively）in diabetic eyes. C/D ratio in diabetic eyes was negatively correlated to average,superior and inferior GCC（P=0.015,0.007 and 0.017 respectively）. The FLV% was negatively correlated to the refraction and level of Hb A1c（P=0.019 and 0.013 respectively）and positively correlated to the best corrected visual acuity（BCVA）in log MAR in diabetic group（P=0.004）.CONCLUSION：Significant GCC thinning in diabetes predates retinal vasculopathy,which is mainly focal rather than diffuse. It has no preference to either the superior or inferior halves of the macula. Increase of myopic error is significantly accompanied with increased focal GCC loss. GCC loss is accompanied with increased C/D ratio in diabetic eyes.

The influence of varying shim layers on the progressive damage/failure of a composite component in a bolted composite-aluminum aerospace structural assembly was investigated using a non-linear three-dimensional(3 D)structural solid elements assembled model of a carbon fiber-reinforced polymer(CFRP)-aluminum single-lap joint with a titanium(Ti-6 Al-4 V)fastener and a washer generated with the commercial finite element(FE)software package,ABAQUS/standard.A progressive failure algorithm written in Fortran code with a set of appropriate degradation rules was incorporated as a user subroutine in ABAQUS to simulate the non-linear damage behavior of the composite component in the composite-aluminum bolted aerospace *** assembled 3 DFE model simulated,as well as the specimen for the experimental testing consisted of a carbon-epoxy IMS-977-2 substrate,aluminum alloy 7075-T651 substrate,liquid shim(Hysol EA 9394),solid peelable fiberglass shim,a titanium fastener,and a *** distinction to previous investigations,the influence of shim layers(liquid shim and solid peelable fiberglass shim)inserted in-between the faying surfaces(CFRP and aluminum alloy substrates)were investigated by both numerical simulations and experimental *** simulated model and test specimens conformed to the standard test configurations for both civil and military *** numerical simulations correlated well with the experimental results and it has been found that:(1)The shimming procedure as agreed upon by the aerospace industry for the resolution of assembly gaps in bolted joints for composite materials is the same for a composite-aluminum structure;liquid shim series(0.3,0.5 and 0.7 mm thicknesses)prolonged the service life of the composite component whereas a solid peelable fiberglass shim most definitely had a better influence on the 0.9 assembly gap compared with the liquid shim;(2)The shim layers considerably influenced the structural strength of the composite component b

The role of preoperative dutasteride in reducing bleeding during transurethral resection of the prostate: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Objective Bleeding is one of the most common complications of transurethral resection of the prostate(TURP).Several previous studies reported that administering dutasteride before surgery could reduce perioperative *** aimed to evaluate the efficacy of preoperative dutasteride treatment in benign prostatic hyperplasia patients undergoing TURP by performing a meta-analysis of relevant randomized controlled trials(RCTs).Methods A comprehensive literature search was performed through the electronic databases including Medline,Cochrane Library,Google Scholar,and *** in October *** evaluating the role of dutasteride for TURP were screened using the eligibility criteria and the quality of RCTs was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias *** heterogeneity was assessed using I2 *** measured outcomes were hemoglobin(Hb)levels,perioperative blood loss,blood transfusion,microvessel density(MVD),and operation *** were pooled as mean difference(MD)and odds ratio(OR).Results A total of 11 RCTs consisting of 627 samples from the treatment group and 615 samples from the placebo group were *** that received dutasteride had less reduction in Hb levels(MD−1.10,95%confidence interval[CI]−1.39 to−0.81,p<0.00001).Dutasteride also significantly reduced the operation time(MD−1.79,95%CI−2.97 to−0.61,p=0.003)and transfusion rate after surgery(OR 0.34,95%CI 0.15 to 0.77,p=0.009)compared to the control ***,the MVD(MD−3.60,95%CI−8.04 to 0.84,p=0.11)and perioperative blood loss in dutasteride administration for less than 4 weeks(MD 46.90,95%CI−144.60 to 238.41,p=0.63)and more than 4 weeks(MD−190.13,95%CI−378.05 to−2.21,p=0.05)differences were *** Preoperative administration of dutasteride is able to reduce bleeding during TURP,as indicated by less reduction in Hb level,lower transfusion rate,and less operation time.

Modem intemet of things technologies bear the promise of cheap, ubiquitous and standard solutions for the smart grid. The end-to-end architecture relies upon transverse service enablement and device connectivity platforms, LTE communications solutions and communication gateways bridge the gap between 3GPP standards and legacy communications solutions. This paper will have a specific focus on the multi-services, multi-protocols gateways that allow connection to legacy assets, and how they are a critical component for the digitalization of power grids and cities. We will illustrate how this gateway--called the Smart Grid Node--has enabled Duke Energy （USA） to initiate its grid modernization project in Cincinnati, Ohio. We will also show that the smart grid node is much more than a communication gateway as it can host very diverse decentralized applications and therefore be a key component to enable multi-services smart city nodes in the near future.

The use of oscillating flexible fins in propulsion has been the subject of several studies in recent years, but attention israrely paid to the specific role of stiffness profile in thrust *** profile is defined as the variation in localchordwise bending stiffness (EI) of a fin, from leading to trailing *** this study, flexible fins with a standard NACA0012shape were tested alongside fins with a stiffness profile mimicking that of a Pumpkinseed Sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus).The finswere oscillated with a pitching sinusoidal motion over a range of frequencies and amplitudes, while torque, lateral force andstatic thrust were *** the range of oscillation parameters tested, it was shown that the fin with a biomimetic stiffness profile offered a significantimprovement in static thrust, compared to a fin of similar dimensions with a standard NACA0012 aerofoil *** fin also produced thrust more consistently over each oscillation cycle.A comparison of fin materials of different stiffness showed that the improvement was due to the stiffness profile itself, andwas not simply an effect of altering the overall stiffness of the *** of the same stiffness profile were observed to follow thesame thrust-power curve, independent of the stiffness of the moulding *** fins were shown to produce up to26% greater thrust per watt of input power, within the experimental range.

A new frequency standard comparison system is proposed based on the group quantization phase processing. By shortening the width of phase coincidence fuzzy area and capturing the best group phase coincidences, we reduce the randomness of the counting gate and improve the measurement precision of the comparison system. The method is based on the Fieldprogrammable gate array（FPGA）, which not only retains the advantage using phase synchronization detection technology to overcome the ±1-word counting error, but also accelerates the system response time, simplifies the measurement equipment, and reduces the development cost and power consumption. The experimental results show that the method is reasonable and scientific, and the comparison accuracy of the system can reach the E-12s;level, obviously superior to the measurement accuracy of the traditional frequency standard comparison method,which has a wide application and popularization value.
