Associations between maternal vitamin D status and porcine litter characteristics throughout gestation

Emerging evidence suggests an important role of vitamin D in the establishment and maintenance of pregnancy,and the regulation of foetal growth across mammalian ***,the temporal changes in maternal vitamin D sta-tus throughout gestation in the pig and the relationship between maternal vitamin D status and litter characteristics of interest across gestation remain poorly understood and *** abundance of 25(OH)D in maternal plasma was quantified by HPLC–MS/MS at gestational days(GD)18,30,45,60 and 90(n=5–11 gilts/GD).Maternal plasma 25(OH)D concentrations significantly increased between GD18 and GD30(P<0.05).The relationship between maternal vitamin D metabolite concentrations and litter characteristics of interest including gilt weight,ovulation rate,mean litter weight,number of live foetuses,percentage prenatal survival,and sex ratio of the litter was *** 25(OH)D(P=0.059)concentrations tended to be positively associated with percentage prenatal survival on *** GD90,maternal 25(OH)D(P<0.05)concentrations were inversely associated with gilt *** plasma 25(OH)D concentrations were inversely associated with the percentage of male foetuses in the litter on GD90(P<0.05).This study has provided novel insights into temporal changes in maternal vitamin D status throughout ges-tation and the relationship between maternal vitamin D status and the economically important litter characteristics of gilt weight,percentage prenatal survival and percentage of male foetuses in the *** the understanding of the role of vitamin D across important developmental timepoints in relation to foetal growth is essential to improve reproductive success in livestock species.

Varalu is an early maturing rice variety widely grown in the rainfed ecosystem preferred for its grain type and cooking ***,the yield of Varalu is substantially low since it is being affected by reproductive drought stress along with the blast *** genetic improvement of Varalu was done by introgressing a major yield QTL,qDTY_(12.1),along with two major blast resistance genes ***54 and Pi1 through marker-assisted backcross *** traits were transferred till BC_(2) generation and intercrossing was followed to pyramid the two *** foreground selection was carried out using linked markers as well as peak markers(RM28099,RM28130,RM511 and RM28163)for the targeted QTL(qDTY_(12.1)),RM206 for Pi54 and RM224 for *** background selection was done using genome-wide SSR *** best lines(MSM-36,MSM-49,MSM-53,MSM-57,MSM-60 and MSM-63)having qDTY_(12.1) and two blast resistance genes in homozygous condition with recurrent parent genome of 95.0%-96.5% having minimal linkage drag of about 0.1 to 0.7 Mb were *** lines showed yield advantage under drought stress as well as irrigated ***-36 showed better performance in the national coordinated trials conducted across India,which indicated that improved lines of Varalu expected to replace Varalu and may have an important role in sustaining rice *** present study demonstrated the successful marker-assisted pyramiding strategy for introgression of genes/QTLs conferring biotic stress resistance and yield under abiotic stress in rice.

Review on canine pyometra, oxidative stress and current trends in diagnostics

Pyometra is one of the most important and common disorders in canine. The disease results in life threatening condition associated with septicemia and toxemia. The condition commonly occurs during luteal phase of estrous cycle, generally 4 weeks to 4 months of estrous cycle. The age, parity, breeds, administration of hormones are some predisposing factors of the condition. However, interaction between potentially pathogenic bacteria and hormonally primed uterus is believed to result in pyometra. The disease is initiated in the form of cystic endometrial hyperplasia, which later progresses into purulent uterine content following bacterial infection resulting in pyometra. The disturbance in antioxidant and pro-oxidant balance succeeding bacterial infection results in oxidative stress. The resultant stress further induces endometrial degeneration, immunosuppression and additionally aggravates the condition. An important clinical sign is malodorous, sanguineous or mucopurulent vaginal discharge with general symptoms such as vomiting, polyuria, polydipsia, depression, anorexia and occasionally fever. Till date, ultrasonography is the best diagnostic method while radiology and serological test are also helpful. Recently, the estimation of inflammatory mediators (acute phase proteins and prostaglandin metabolites) has appeared as marker for diagnosis of the pyometra. Determination of levels of inflammatory mediators has emerged as an important diagnostic method because it can be helpful in prognosis of the condition. The pyometra can be best treated by surgical manipulation (ovariohysterectomy);however, hormonal treatment can be given in less severe cases which aimed at reducing the effect of progesterone on the reproductive tract. Together, provision of antioxidants could be helpful in disease recovery along with the determined treatment. In this study,the decay of maternal peste des petits ruminants virus(PPRV) antibodies in kids born to goats vaccinated with Asian lineage IV PPR vaccine and the efficacy of passive immunity against PPRV was assessed to determine the appropriate period for vaccination in *** samples collected from kids born to vaccinated,unvaccinated and infected goats at different time intervals were tested by PPR competitive ELISA and serum neutralization test(SNT).Maternal antibodies in kids were detectable up to 6 months with a decline trend from the third month onwards and receded below the protective level by the fourth *** kid with an SN titre of 1:8 at the time of immunization showed significant PPRV specific antibody response(percentage inhibition of 76;SN titers >1:16),when tested on 21 day post-vaccination and was completely protected from infection upon virulent PPRV ***,the kid with 1:8 SN titers was completely protected from PPR infection on active ***,PPR vaccination is recommended in kids,aged 4 months and born to immunized or exposed *** could be a suitable period to avoid window of susceptibility in kids to PPRV and the effort to eliminate PPR infection from susceptible populations.

The present study deals with the co-ordination of cytokine （IL-4 and IFN-7） expression and kinetics of peste des petits ruminants （PPR） virus antigen and antibody in PPRV infected and vaccinated goats. The infected animals exhibited mixed cytokine （both TH1 and TH2） responses in the initial phase of the disease. The infected and dead goats had increased IFN-T response before their death; while IL-4 remained at the base level. The cytokine expression in recovered animals was almost similar to that of vaccinated ones, where a unique biphasic response of IL-4 expression was observed with an up-regulation of IFN-T on 7th days post vaccination （dpv）. Analysis of PPR virus antigen and antibody kinetics in different components of blood from infected and vaccinated animais revealed that the PPR virus antigen load was highest in plasma followed by serum and blood of the infected animals, whereas vaccinated animals showed only marginal positivity on 9th dpv. The antibody titer was high in serum followed by plasma and blood in both vaccinated and infected animals. Therefore, it is inferred that the presence of antigen and antibody were significant with the expression of cytokine, and that a decreased response of IL-4 was noticed during intermediate phase of the disease i.e., 7 to 12m days post infection （dpi）. This indicates the ability to mount a functional TH2 response after 14th dpi could be a critical determinant in deciding the survival of the PPR infected animal.

Biochar-mediated removal of pharmaceutical compounds from aqueous matrices via adsorption

Pharmaceutical is one of the noteworthy classes of emerging contaminants. These biologically active compounds pose a range of deleterious impacts on human health and the environment. This is attributed to their refractory behavior, poor biodegradability, and pseudopersistent nature. Their large-scale production by pharmaceutical industries and subsequent widespread utilization in hospitals, community health centers, and veterinary facilities, among others, have significantly increased the occurrence of pharmaceutical residues in various environmental compartments. Several technologies are currently being evaluated to eliminate pharmaceutical compounds (PCs) from aqueous environments. Among them, adsorption appears as the most viable treatment option because of its operational simplicity and low cost. Intensive research and development efforts are, therefore, currently underway to develop inexpensive adsorbents for the effective abatement of PCs. Although numerous adsorbents have been investigated for the removal of PCs in recent years, biochar-based adsorbents have garnered tremendous scientific attention to eliminate PCs from aqueous matrices because of their decent specific surface area, tunable surface chemistry, scalable production, and environmentally benign nature. This review, therefore, attempts to provide an overview of the latest progress in the application of biochar for the removal of PCs from wastewater. Additionally, the fundamental knowledge gaps in the domain knowledge are identified and novel strategic research guidelines are laid out to make further advances in this promising approach towards sustainable development.

Immunochemical characterization of antigens of Brucella canis and their use in seroprevalence study of canine brucellosis

Objective:To explore immunochemical characterization of antigens of Brucella canis(B. canis),and the use in seroprevalence study of canine ***:External hot phosphate buffer saline extract(HPBSE) and internal sonicated(SA) antigens were prepared from *** strain MEX 51 and imniunochemically *** antigens were used to test 527 serum samples of dogs by 2-mercaptoethanol-tubc agglutination test(2 ME-TAT), agar gel immunodiffusion test(AGID).dot-ELISA and indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(I-ELISA) to assess the seroprevalence of canine ***:The protein content of HPBSE and SA antigens was 0.387 mg/*** 0.195 mg/mL,respectively,whereas carbohydrate content was 0.174 mg/mL and 0.150 mg/mL,*** sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis(12.5%) of HPBSE and SA,revealed 6 and 8 visible peptide bands ranging from 18-80 kDa and 12-45 kDa,*** blot analysis showed immunodominant bands of MW 12.28.39 and 45 kl)a for HPBSE and 20-24 kl)a for SA. The AGII) revealed HPBSE as more specific antigen than SA but both I-ELISA and dot-ELISA indicated SA antigen to be more specific and reliable than *** seroprevalence of canine brucellosis was 2.27%by 2ME-TAT.1.5%by AGID.3.03%by dot-ELISA and 16.12%by I-ELISA. Conclusions:On the basis of the results of present study,we concluded that HPBSE is suitable antigen for AGID,which is more specific:whereas SA antigen is suitable for I-ELISA,which is highly ***,initial screening of serum samples should be carried out by I-ELISA followed by confirmation with AGID.

Optimizing the seed-cell filling performance of an inclined plate seed metering device using integrated ANN-PSO approach

Uniformseed distribution within the row is the prime objective of precision planters for better crop growth and *** plate planters are generally used for sowing bold seeds likemaize,groundnut,chickpea,and their operating parameters like the forward speed of operation,the seedmetering plate inclination,and the seed level in the hopper affect the cell fill and subsequently the uniformseed ***,to achieve precise seed distribution,these parameters need to be *** the present study,out of the different optimization techniques,a new intelligent optimization technique based on the integrated ANN-PSO approach has been used to achieve the set goal.A 3–5-1 artificial neural network(ANN)model was developed for predicting the cell fill of inclined plate seedmetering device,and the particle swarmoptimization(PSO)algorithmwas applied to obtain the optimum values of the operating parameters corresponding to 100%cell *** most appropriate optimal values of the forward speed of operation,the seed metering plate inclination,and the seed level in the hopper for achieving 100%cell fill were found to be 3 km/h,50-degree,and 75%of total height,*** proposed integrated ANN-PSO approach was capable of predicting the optimal values of operating parameters with amaximumdeviation of 2%compared to the experimental results,thus confirmed the reliability of the proposed optimization technique.

Assessment of the fraction of bed load concentration towards the sediment transport of a monsoon-dominated river basin of eastern India

Given the challenges of re-creating complex bed load(BL)transport processes in rivers,models are preferred over gathering and examining field *** highlight of the present research is to develop an approach to determine the ungauged bed load concentration(BLC_(u))utilizing the measured suspended sediment concentration(SSC)and hydraulic variables of the last four decades for the Mahanadi River *** technique employs shear stress and SSC equations for turbulent open channel ***,the predicted BLC_(u)is correlated with SSC using a power relation to estimate BLC_(u)on the river and ***,different BL functions(BLF)efficiency is assessed across *** model predicted BLC_(u)is comparable with the published data for sandy rivers and falls within±20%.Outliers in hydraulic and sedimentological statistics significantly influence estimating the BL fraction apart from higher relative ratios and catchment *** constants of power functions are physically linked to sediment transport configuration,mechanism,and inflow to the *** stream power-based BLF best predicts the BL transport,followed by shear stress and unit discharge *** disparity in the estimation of BLC_(u)results from station-specific physical factors,sampling data dispersion,and associated uncertainties.

The labile organic carbon(C)and C-related enzymes are sensitive indicators capturing alterations of soil organic matter(SOM),even in a short-time *** the effects of crop husbandry and land use change on these attributes have been well studied,there is no consensus about how plant phenology may impact *** study aimed to determine the short-term effect o f six distinct phenological stages(PS-1:full bloom;PS-2:fruit set;PS-3:pit hardening;PS-4:physiological maturity;PS-5:60 d after physiological maturity;and PS-6:fall)o f peach on the changes in soil organic carbon(SOC)fractions of different oxidizability,labile C pools,and C-cycle enzyme activities in soils,for two consecutive years(2015 and 2016)in the North-Western Himalayas(NWH).Peach rhizosphere soils were sampled at the topsoil(0-15 cm)and subsoil(16-30 cm)layers,along with rhizosphere soils from adjacent perennial grasses,which served as a *** for most of the assessed parameters,including very labile C,labile C,microbial biomass C,permanganate oxidizable C,dissolved organic C,mineralizable C,amylase activity,and carboxymethyl-cellulase activity,were significantly(P<0.05)higher at PS-3 than at other phenological stages of ***,a sudden decline in these soil variables was recorded at PS-5,followed by a slight buildup at PS-6,particularly in the topsoil of the peach ***-term changes in organic C fractions of different oxidizability,influenced by peach phenological stage,significantly(P<0.05)affected C management index,C pool index,and lability *** the C management index and lability index showed their highest values at PS-3 and their lowest values at PS-5,clearly indicating short-term accretion and depletion of SOC,in tandem with the peach phenological *** component analysis suggested that a composite of soil indicators,including microbial biomass C,dissolved organic C,amylase,and invertase,could help detect short-term changes in SOC *** i
