Using data-limited approaches to assess data-rich indian ocean bigeye tuna:Data quantity evaluation and critical information for management implications

The majority of fishery stocks in the world are data limited,which limits formal stock *** the impacts of input data on stock assessment is critical for improving stock assessment and developing precautionary management *** compare catch advice obtained from applications of various datalimited methods(DLMs)with forecasted catch advice from existing data-rich stock assessment models for the indian ocean bigeye tuna(Thunnus obesus).Our goal was to evaluate the consistency of catch advice derived from data-rich methods and data-limited approaches when only a subset of data is *** Stock Synthesis(SS)results were treated as benchmarks for comparison because they reflect the most comprehensive and best possible scientific information of the *** study indicated that although the DLMs examined appeared robust for the indian ocean bigeye tuna,the implied catch advice differed between data-limited approaches and the current assessment,due to different data inputs and model *** DLMs tended to provide more optimistic catch advice compared with the SS,which was mostly influenced by historical catches,current abundance and depletion estimates,and natural mortality,but was less sensitive to life-history parameters(particularly those related to growth).This study highlights the utility of DLMs and their implications on catch advice for the management of tuna stocks.

Evaluation of Three Harvest Control Rules for Bigeye tuna(Thunnus obesus) Fisheries in the indian ocean

The stock of Bigeye tuna(Thunnus obesus) in the indian ocean supports an important international fishery and is considered to be fully exploited. The responsible management agency, the indian ocean tuna commission(IOTC), does not have an explicit management decision-making framework in place to prevent over-fishing. In this study, we evaluated three harvest control rules, i) constant fishing mortality(CF), from 0.2 to 0.6, ii) constant catch(CC), from 60000 to 140000 t, and iii) constant escapement(CE), from 0.3 to 0.7. The population dynamics simulated by the operating model was based on the most recent stock assessment using Stock Synthesis version Ⅲ(SS3). Three simulation scenarios(low, medium and high productivity) were designed to cover possible uncertainty in the stock assessment and biological parameters. Performances of three harvest control rules were compared on the basis of three management objectives(over 3, 10 and 25 years): i) the probability of maintaining spawning stock biomass above a level that can sustain maximum sustainable yield(MSY) on average, ii) the probability of achieving average catches between 0.8 MSY and 1.0 MSY, and iii) inter-annual variability in catches. The constant escapement strategy(CE=0.5), constant fishing mortality strategy(F=0.4) and constant catch(CC=80000) were the most rational among the respective management scenarios. It is concluded that the short-term annual catch is suggested at 80000 t, and the potential total allowable catch for a stable yield could be set at 120000 t once the stock had recovered successfully. All the strategies considered in this study to achieve a ‘tolerable' balance between resource conservation and utilization have been based around the management objectives of the IOTC.

Application of a Bayesian method to data-poor stock assessment by using indian ocean albacore (Thunnus alalunga) stock assessment as an example

It is widely recognized that assessments of the status of data-poor fish stocks are challenging and that Bayesian analysis is one of the methods which can be used to improve the reliability of stock assessments in data-poor situations through borrowing strength from prior information deduced from species with good-quality data or other known information. Because there is considerable uncertainty remaining in the stock assessment of albacore tuna（Thunnus alalunga） in the indian ocean due to the limited and low-quality data, we investigate the advantages of a Bayesian method in data-poor stock assessment by using indian ocean albacore stock assessment as an example. Eight Bayesian biomass dynamics models with different prior assumptions and catch data series were developed to assess the stock. The results show（1） the rationality of choice of catch data series and assumption of parameters could be enhanced by analyzing the posterior distribution of the parameters;（2） the reliability of the stock assessment could be improved by using demographic methods to construct a prior for the intrinsic rate of increase（r）. Because we can make use of more information to improve the rationality of parameter estimation and the reliability of the stock assessment compared with traditional statistical methods by incorporating any available knowledge into the informative priors and analyzing the posterior distribution based on Bayesian framework in data-poor situations, we suggest that the Bayesian method should be an alternative method to be applied in data-poor species stock assessment, such as indian ocean albacore.

Reproductive Biology of Yellowfin tuna T. albacares in the West-Central indian ocean

Survey of yellowfin tuna in the west-central indian ocean was conducted on board of Chinese longliners during 2003,2004 and 2005,which is a part of Chinese tuna Fishery Scientific Observer Program(CTFSOP) . The reproductive biology has been investigated. A total of 1 023 samples are collected including 417 ovaries and 606 testes. Spawning activities of yellowfin tuna have been studied for both male and female from January to June. The data showed that the average monthly sex ratio is 0.59,and the minimum length at sexual maturity is 101 cm for female and 110 cm for male respectively. Length at 50% sexual maturity is esti-mated at 113.77 cm for female and 120.20 cm for male,whereas maturation rate is 0.066 cm-1 for female and 0.091 cm-1 for male. Sex ratio by length class indicates that the proportion of male is higher than female's along with size increasing;for instance,in the group of the body length longer than 145 cm,some females have their body length from 145 to 160 cm and males have their body length at 160 cm and even longer. Statistically,yellowfin tuna has a significant seasonal reproduction.

The Relationship Between Fat Content and Biological Parameters of Bigeye tuna(Thunnus obseus) in the Western Central indian ocean

Comparing fat content with physiological status can throw light on the reproduction and feeding behavior of the fish. The biological data of 586 bigeye tuna were collected from the longline fishery in the waters of Western Central indian ocean from November, 2012 to March, 2013. The spatial or temporal distribution of the fat content, and the relationships of fat content with gender, round weight, gonadal maturity and fork length were analyzed. A generalized additive model(GAM) was used to analyze the relationships between fat content and fork length(FL), gonadosomatic index(GSI), condition factor(K), and somatic index(SI). Results showed that: 1) the fat content of bigeye tuna was in the range of 3.1%–27.1% with the average 12.8%; 2) there were no significant geographical differences of average fat content(P > 0.05) among 1? squares in general; 3) there were no significant differences(P > 0.05) of the fat content for different genders, months, or gonad maturity stages; 4) there was an extremely significant correlation(P = 0.000) between fat content and FL and GSI. There was no significant correlation(P = 0.051) between fat content and K. There was a significant correlation(P = 0.003) between fat content and SI. The results of this study suggest that the fat content of the matured fish was relatively stable. The survey area was in a spawning region, and the survey period was the spawning season for bigeye tuna.

Evaluating effectiveness of biological reference points for bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) and yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) fisheries in the indian ocean

Biological reference point(BRP)is one of the essential components in the management strategy evaluation that is used to determine the status of fishery stock and set management ***,as BRPs can be derived from different models and many different BRPs are available,the effectiveness and consistency of different BRPs should be evaluated before being applied to fisheries *** this study,we used a computation-intensive approach to identify optimal *** systematically evaluated 1500 combinations of alternative BRPs in managing the bigeye tuna(Thunnus obesus)and yellowfin tuna(Thunnus albacares)fisheries in the indian *** effectiveness and consistency of these BRPs were evaluated using four performance measures related to fisheries landing performance and biomass *** Carlo simulation was used to evaluate various *** results suggest that the proposed computation-intensive approach can be effective in identifying optimal BRPs with respect to a set of defined performance *** found that the current maximum sustainable yield(MSY)-based BRP combinations are effective target BRPs to manage the bigeye and yellowfin tuna fisheries with the“linear”harvest control rule(HCR).However,using the“knife-edge”HCR,better BRPs could be found for both the bigeye and yellowfin tuna fisheries management with improved fisheries and conservation *** framework developed in this study can be used to identify suitable BRPs based on a set of defined performance measures for other fisheries.

Blue marlin(Makaira nigricans)is a common bycatch species in the global tuna longline *** this study,we applied a common data-poor approach,i.e.,depletion-corrected average catch(DCAC)to assess stock status of the indian ocean blue *** yield(Ysust),one reference point in this case,was estimated,and its uncertainty was integrated by using Monte Carlo *** results revealed the estimate of Ysust by DCAC was lower than MSY of 11,926 t by BSP-SS and is also lower than the provisional reference point of 11,704 t by the management *** is reliable for blue marlin in driving precautionary management quantity based on the CPUE of Japan(1980–2015).This study also implies that DCAC could be applied to other billfish stocks and uncertainty be estimated for sustainable ***,data-poor methods could be adjusted with precautionary approaches.
