Background diseases and the number of previous intravitreal aflibercept injections on immediate intraocular pressure increase and vitreous reflux rate in phakic eyes

●AIM:To evaluate the effect of background diseases and number of previous intravitreal aflibercept injections(IVAIs)on immediate intraocular pressure(IOP)increase and vitreous reflux(VR)rate and to evaluate the correlation of both age and axial length with immediate IOP increase and VR rate.●METHODS:This study included 105 patients with cystoid macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion,35 patients with diabetic macular edema,69 patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration(nAMD),and 12 patients with myopic choroidal neovascularization,which underwent first-time *** correlation of immediate IOP increase and VR rates with the four background diseases was ***,the correlation of age with immediate IOP increase and VR rate as well as correlation of axial length with immediate IOP increase and VR rate were ***,54 patients with nAMD were treated with IVAI>10 times(multiple IVAIs).Moreover,the correlation of immediate IOP increase and VR rates with first-time and multiple IVAIs in nAMD was determined.●RESULTS:The immediate IOP increase(P=0.16)and VR rates(P=0.50)were almost similar among the four background *** immediate postinjection IOP and age,VR rate and age,immediate postinjection IOP and axial length,or VR rate and axial length were not correlated in the four background *** immediate IOP increase(P=0.66)and VR rates(P=0.28)did not significantly differ between first-time and multiple IVAIs in nAMD.●CONCLUSION:Background diseases and number of previous IVAIs have no effect on immediate IOP increase and VR ***,age and axial length have no correlation on immediate IOP increase and VR rate.

Friction tests have been carried out on bearing steel friction pairs coated with a-C:H and ta-C under lubricated conditions with 1-hexadecene and pure oleic acid,*** results show that ta-C leads to the super-low regime with oleic acid(friction coefficient below 0.01)and that a-C:H is quite well lubricated by *** analyses by coupling X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)and secondary ion mass spectrometry(SIMS)have been carried out in the case of oleic acid with ta-C and a-C:H *** show that tribochemical reactions have *** groups terminate the ta-C surface whereas a-C:H is covered by a thin tribofilm and is terminated by oleic acid *** superlow regime in the case of ta-C is mainly attributed to the presence of the OH-termination.

Collection Efficiency of Cylindrical and Elliptic Cyclone Dust Collectors with Vortex Breaker

The cyclone dust collector is applied to many kinds of industries and also there are many types of cyclones which are selected for the application and the placement of the establishment. However the cross section of these cyclones is the circular cylindrical section for the optimum condition of the turbulent rotational flow. However from the energy consumption and the collection efficiency points of view, the circular cross section of the cyclone is not always recommended but the elliptic cross section is recommended. Therefore in this paper, the detailed experimental results of the collection efficiency for the circular cross section and for the elliptic cross sections of the eccentricity =0.5,0.6and 0.7 are reported. The test dust for these experiments is fly-ash of the mean diameter Xpm=18.0 μm and 18.3 μm. The feed particle concentration is Co=1.0-50 g/m3.

Treatment of young patients with lupus nephritis using calcineurin inhibitors

Recent advances in the management of lupus nephritis, together with earlier renal biopsy and selective use of aggressive immunosuppressive therapy, have contribut-ed to a favorable outcome in children and adolescents with systemic lupus erythematosus （SLE）. Neverthe-less, we believe that a more effective and less toxic treatment is needed to attain an optimal control of the activity of lupus nephritis. Recent published papers and our experiences regarding treatment of young patients with lupus nephritis using calcineurin inhibitors are re-viewed. Although it has been reported that intermittent monthly pulses of intravenous cyclophosphamide （IVCY） are effective for preserving renal function in adult pa-tients, CPA is a potent immunosuppressive agent thatinduces severe toxicity, including myelo- and gonadal toxicity, and increases the risk of secondary malig-nancy. Thus, treatment for controlling lupus nephritis activity, especially in children and adolescents, remains challenging. Cyclosporine A （CsA） and tacrolimus （Tac） are T-cell-specific calcineurin inhibitors that prevent the activation of helper T cells, thereby inhibiting thetranscription of the early activation genes of interleu-kin （IL）-2 and suppressing T cell-induced activation of tumor necrosis factor-α, IL-1β and IL-6. Therefore, both drugs, which we believe may be less cytotoxic, are attractive therapeutic options for young patients with lupus nephritis. Recently, a multidrug regimen of prednisolone （PDN）, Tac, and mycophenolate mofetile （MMF） has been found effective and relatively safe in adult lupus nephritis. Since the mechanisms of action of MMF and Tac are probably complementary, multidrug therapy for lupus nephritis may be useful. We propose as an alternative to IVCY, a multidrug therapy with mizoribine, which acts very similarly to MMF, and Tac, which has a different mode of action, combined with PDN for pediatric-onset lupus nephritis.
