Silicon/graphite(Si/Gr)nanocomposites with controlled void spaces and encapsulated by a carbon shell(Si/Gr@void@C)are synthesized by utilizing high-energy ball milling to reduce micron-sized particles to nanoscale,followed by carbonization of polydopamine(PODA)to form a carbon shell,and finally partial etching of the nanostructured Si core by NaOH solution at elevated *** particular,the effects of ball milling time and NaOH etching temperature on the electrochemical properties of Si/Gr@void@C are *** the ball milling time results in the improved specific capacity of Si-based *** coating further enhances the specific capacity and capacity retention over charge/discharge *** best cycle stability is achieved after partial etching of the Si core inside Si/Gr@void@C particles at either 70 or 80C,leading to little or no capacity decay over 130 ***,it is found that both carbon coating and NaOH etching processes cause some surface oxidation of the nanostructured Si particles derived from high-energy ball *** surface oxidation of the nanostructured Si results in decreases in specific capacity and should be minimized in future *** mechanistic understanding developed in this study paves the way to further improve the electrochemical performance of Si/Gr@void@C nanocomposites in future.

The evolution of precipitates in stressed solids is modeled by coupling a quasi-steady diffusion equation and a linear elasticity equation with dynamic boundary *** governing equations are solved numerically using a boundary integral method(BIM).A critical step in applying BIM is to develop fast algorithms to reduce the arithmetic operation count of matrix-vector *** this paper,we develop a fast adaptive treecode algorithm for the diffusion and elasticity problems in two dimensions(2D).We present a novel source dividing strategy to parallelize the *** results show that the speedup factor is nearly perfect up to a moderate number of *** approach of parallelization can be readily implemented in other treecodes using either uniform or non-uniform point *** demonstrate the effectiveness of the treecode by computing the long-time evolution of a complicated microstructure in elastic media,which would be extremely difficult with a direct summation method due to CPU time *** treecode speeds up computations dramatically while fulfilling the stringent precision requirement dictated by the spectrally accurate BIM.

A first principles-based dynamic model for a continuous catalyst regeneration (CCR) platforming process, the UOP commercial naphtha catalytic reforming process, is developed in this paper. The lumping details of the naphtha feed and reaction scheme of the reaction model are given. The process model is composed of the reforming reaction model with catalyst deactivation, the furnace model and the separator model, which is capable of capturing the major dynamics that occurs in this process system. Dynamic simulations are performed based on Gear numerical algorithm and method of lines (MOL), a numerical technique dealing with partial differential equations (PDEs). The results of simulation are also presented. Dynamic responses caused by disturbances in the process system can be correctly predicted through simulations.

Nonlinear dynamical systems are sometimes under the influence of random fluctuations. It is desirable to examine possible bifurcations for stochastic dynamical systems when a parameter varies.A computational analysis is conducted to investigate bifurcations of a simple dynamical system under non-Gaussian a-stable Levy motions, by examining the changes in stationary probability density functions for the solution orbits of this stochastic system. The stationary probability density functions are obtained by solving a nonlocal Fokker-Planck equation numerically. This allows numerically investigating phenomenological bifurcation, or P-bifurcation, for stochastic differential equations with non-Gaussian Levy noises.

Bcl-2 is an anti-apoptotic oncoprotein and its protein levels are inversely correlated with prognosis in many ***, the role of Bcl-2 in the progression of prostate cancer is not clear. Here we report that Bcl-2 is required for theprogression of LNCaP prostate cancer cells from an androgen-dependent to an androgen-independent growth stage. ThemRNA and protein levels of Bcl-2 are significantly increased in androgen-independent prostate cancer cells. shRNA-medi-ated gene silencing of Bcl-2 in androgen-independent prostate cancer cells promotes UV-induced apoptosis and suppressesthe growth of prostate tumors in vivo. Growing androgen-dependent cells under androgen-deprivation conditions resultsin formation of androgen-independent colonies; and the transition from androgen-dependent to androgen-independentgrowth is blocked by ectopic expression of the Bcl-2 antagonist Bax or Bcl-2 shRNA. Thus, our results demonstratethat Bcl-2 is not only critical for the survival of androgen-independent prostate cancer cells, but is also required for theprogression of prostate cancer cells from an androgen-dependent to an androgen-independent growth stage.

Robust coordination of interdependent electricity and natural gas systems in day-ahead scheduling for facilitating volatile renewable generations via power-to-gas technology

The increasing interdependency of electricity and natural gas systems promotes coordination of the two systems for ensuring operational security and *** paper proposes a robust day-ahead scheduling model for the optimal coordinated operation of integrated energy systems while considering key uncertainties of the power system and natural gas system operation cost. Energy hub,with collocated gas-fired units, power-to-gas(Pt G) facilities, and natural gas storages, is considered to store or convert one type of energy(i.e., electricity or natural gas)into the other form, which could analogously function as large-scale electrical energy storages. The column-andconstraint generation(C&CG) is adopted to solve the proposed integrated robust model, in which nonlinear natural gas network constraints are reformulated via a set of linear constraints. Numerical experiments signify the effectiveness of the proposed model for handling volatile electrical loads and renewable generations via the coordinated scheduling of electricity and natural gas systems.
