To the Editor,As of 31 M arch 2020,m ore than 100000 cases of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)have been confirm ed in Italy.1 Progressive mitigation measures have been introduced by the Italian governm ent since 9 M arch 2020 to underm ine and break the virus transmission chain.However,the COVID-19-associated hospitalisation rate in Lombardy,the epicentre of the outbreak,has risen since the late days o f February 2020,by 30%each day,and it is only very recently that it slowed down to 5%daily,which still translates to 500 new patients every day who are in absolute need of hospital care.

The global economic crisis is affecting performances of not-for-profits. At the same time donors are targeted by a pressing good-cause related marketing, so that the competition for philanthropy is particularly keen. U.S. universities can be public, not-for-profit and for-profit. U.S. not-for-profit universities are confronted with different marketing, fundraising and revenue diversification. Above all, marketing concerns customers and their segmentation and their purchasing-power exploitation;fundraising aims to gain the trustworthiness of donors, instead. The aim of this paper is the analysis of the revenue diversification of a sample of 100 U.S. not-for-profit universities according to IRS (Internal Revenue Service) Forms. These 100 U.S. universities had the highest 2012’s revenues for the Guidestar ranking (***). The cluster analysis gives evidence that the highest gain and the highest solvency are both connected with the implementation of revenue diversification for one profile. The most crowded cluster is the Marketing Expert with the second highest gain.

The contemporary crisis is giving evidence of failing macroeconomic theories and policies, after decades of focusing on the aggregate domestic demand and the role of the public expenditure. The contemporary crisis has shown the weakness of fiscal policy. With very low interest rates, the monetary policy does not seem to provide an alternative exit strategy out of the crisis, too. In this paper we discuss the hypothesis that GDP can still be a reliable estimate of growth. Nevertheless, at crisis times, only if the focus is on the foreign demand like International Tourism Receipts and Exports, and Exports can be an exit strategy. One component of Exports and International Tourism Receipts are worthy of attention. Thanks to a cluster analysis of per year variations of International Tourism Receipts (ITRs), GDP and Exports (World Bank Database) from 2007 to 2011, average positive variations of GDPs are matching with positive ITRs and Exports for “clusters” of countries. Performances of Europe and USA are worse than China, Brazil, India and South Africa and these continents and countries are separated in two different clusters. This result can be related to an increase of trade in emerging economies more than in mature ones, whose exit out of the crisis is much more demanding. The research confirms that Tourism and Exports are having an impact on the growth at different intensities (Europe and America vs. Asia) at crisis times.

本文的目的是通过文化艺术干预项目,参与到城市更新代理人与当地社区之间权力关系(power relationship)的论辩中。我们的研究提出了一个新的概念框架,重点比较解释城市社会和参与性空间理论的两个异托邦(heterotopia)概念。异托邦的概念可以追溯到米歇尔·福柯(Michel Foucault)和亨利·列斐伏尔(Henri Lefebvre)两位重要的思想家。我们通过将其与公共空间(public space)内的艺术文化活动相联系,为当代城市建立了另一种分析范式。我们利用这两种不同的异托邦概念解读,从权力关系的角度,探索艺术实践与城市空间相互作用的含义。分析中,我们发现,福柯的异托邦概念可能有利于城市自上而下的规划和中产阶级化(gentrification),与之相反,列斐伏尔的理念可能更适合作为重新激活城市权力(the right to the city)的策略。

Hydrogen is being considered as an important option to contribute to energy system decarbonization.However,currently its production from renewables is expensive compared with the methods that utilize fossil fuels.This paper proposes a comprehensive optimization-based techno-economic assessment of a hybrid renewable electricity-hydrogen virtual power plant(VPP)that boosts its business case by co-optimizing across multiple markets and contractual services to maximize its profits and eventually deliver hydrogen at a lower net cost.Additionally,multiple possible investment options are considered.Case studies of VPP placement in a renewable-rich,congested area of the Australian network and based on real market data and relevant sensitivities show that multi-market participation can significantly boost the business case for cleaner hydrogen.This highlights the importance of value stacking for driving down the cost of cleaner hydrogen.Due to the participation in multiple markets,all VPP configurations considered are found to be economically viable for a hydrogen price of 3 AUD$/kg(2.25 USD$/kg),which has been identified as a threshold value for Australia to export hydrogen at a competitive price.Additionally,if the high price volatility that has been seen in gas prices in 2022(and by extension electricity prices)continues,the flexibility of hybrid VPPs will further improve their business cases.

Organic radicals are widely used as linkers or ligands to synthesize molecular magnetic materials.However,studies regarding the molecular anisotropies of radical-based magnetic materials and their multifunctionalities are rare.Herein,a photoisomerizable diarylethene ligand was used to form{[CoⅢ(3,5-DTSQ·-)(3,5-DTCat2-)]2(6F-DAE-py2)}·3CH3CN·H2O(o-1·3CH3CN·H2O,6F-DAE-py2=1,2-bis(2-methyl-5-(4-pyridyl)-3-thienyl)perfluorocyclopentene),a valence-tautomeric(VT) coordination polymer.We directly observed dual radicals for a single crystal using high-field/-frequency(～13.3 T and～360 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance(EPR) spectroscopy along the c-axis,which was further confirmed by angle-dependent Q-band EPR spectroscopy.Moreover,a conductive anomaly close to the VT transition temperature was observed only when probes were attached at the ab plane of the single crystal,indicative of synergy between valence tautomerism and conductivity.Structural anisotropy studies and density functional theory(DFT) calculations revealed that this synergy is due to electron transfer associated with valence tautomerism.This study presents the first example of dual-radical-based molecular anisotropy and charge-transfer-induced conductive anisotropy in a photoswitchable coordination polymer.

Transfer learning from T1-weighted to T2-weighted Magnetic resonance sequences for brain image segmentation

Magnetic resonance(MR)imaging is a widely employed medical imaging technique that produces detailed anatomical images of the human body.The segmentation of MR im-ages plays a crucial role in medical image analysis,as it enables accurate diagnosis,treatment planning,and monitoring of various diseases and conditions.Due to the lack of sufficient medical images,it is challenging to achieve an accurate segmentation,especially with the application of deep learning networks.The aim of this work is to study transfer learning from T1-weighted(T1-w)to T2-weighted(T2-w)MR sequences to enhance bone segmentation with minimal required computation resources.With the use of an excitation-based convolutional neural networks,four transfer learning mechanisms are proposed:transfer learning without fine tuning,open fine tuning,conservative fine tuning,and hybrid transfer learning.Moreover,a multi-parametric segmentation model is proposed using T2-w MR as an intensity-based augmentation technique.The novelty of this work emerges in the hybrid transfer learning approach that overcomes the overfitting issue and preserves the features of both modalities with minimal computation time and resources.The segmentation results are evaluated using 14 clinical 3D brain MR and CT images.The results reveal that hybrid transfer learning is superior for bone segmentation in terms of performance and computation time with DSCs of 0.5393±0.0007.Although T2-w-based augmentation has no significant impact on the performance of T1-w MR segmentation,it helps in improving T2-w MR segmentation and developing a multi-sequences segmentation model.

The prevalence of Internet of Things(IoT)applications has generated an unprecedented volume of industrial data that create the main source of big data[1,2].How to effectively and efficiently preprocess,integrate,and analyze big IoT data from multiple sources is still a fundamental challenge[3,4].Fortunately,Artificial Intelligence(AI)has recently emerged as a key technology to achieving intelligent data analyses and scientific business decision-making.AI algorithms can process the streaming data generated by distributed IoT devices and provide powerful tools to address complex big data analytics[5,6].Therefore,the adaptation of AI-based methods is highly demanded for achieving their full potential in smart IoT applications.However,the IoT devices,which run in an unstable environment and have poor computing capabilities,are often confronted with a range of application requirements,such as quick response,secure communications,and privacy protection[7,8].Currently,lightweight security and privacy solutions specifically designed for the devices and servers operating in the IoT environment are still lacking.

Infection caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV2) virus, responsible for the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19) pandemic, induces symptoms including increased inflammatory response, severe acute respiratory syndrome(SARS), cognitive dysfunction like brain fog, and cardiovascular defects. Long-term effects of SARS-CoV2 COVID-19 syndrome referred to as post-COVID-19 syndrome on age-related progressive neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease remain understudied. Using the targeted misexpression of individual SARS-CoV2 proteins in the retinal neurons of the Drosophila melanogaster eye, we found that misexpression of nonstructural protein 3(Nsp3), a papain-like protease, ablates the eye and generates dark necrotic spots. Targeted misexpression of Nsp3 in the eye triggers reactive oxygen species production and leads to apoptosis as shown by cell death reporters, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase(TdT) dUTP Nick-end labeling(TUNEL) assay, and dihydroethidium staining. Furthermore, Nsp3 misexpression activates both apoptosis and autophagy mechanism(s) to regulate tissue homeostasis. Transient expression of SARS-CoV2 Nsp3 in murine neuroblastoma, Neuro-2a cells, significantly reduced the metabolic activity of these cells and triggers cell death. Misexpression of SARS-CoV2 Nsp3 in an Alzheimer’s disease transgenic fly eye model(glass multiple repeats [GMR]>amyloid β42) further enhances the neurodegenerative rough eye phenotype due to increased cell death. These findings suggest that SARS-CoV2 utilizes Nsp3 protein to potentiate cell death response in a neurodegenerative disease background that has high pre-existing levels of neuroinflammation and cell death.

Performance Analysis of a Solar Continuous Adsorption Refrigeration System

A study is conducted on the performances of a solar powered continuous-adsorption refrigerator considering two particular days as references cases,namely,the summer solstice(June 21st)and the autumn equinox(September 21st).The cooling capacity,system performance coefficient and the daily rate of available cooling energy are assessed.The main goal is to compare the performances of a solar adsorption chiller equipped with a hot water tank(HWT)with an equivalent system relying on solar collectors with no heat storage module.The daily cooling rates for the solar refrigerator are found to be 102.4 kWh and 74.3 kWh,respectively,on June 21st and on September 21st,using a total collector’s area of 43.47 m2.The corresponding values for the adsorption chiller equipped with a hot water tank of 2 m3(and using a total collector’s area of 72.45 m2),are 127.1 kWh and 106.13 kWh,respectively.
