The Digital Earth concept as originally proposed by former US Vice president Al Gore is now well established and widely adopted ***,many researchers world-wide are studying the causes,effects and impacts of Global *** authors commence by describing a five-step approach to the development of Digital Earth *** is followed by a detailed account of Digital Earth research and developments in *** authors then present the research results of Global Change studies carried out in China,based on the Digital Earth *** research results are based on a classification of global change *** covers the following global change situations:Forest and grassland fires in Northern China,temperate region desertification and dust storms,underground coal fires,deforestation and carbon sequestration,protection and utilisation of wetlands,Avian Influenza and the spread of diseases,Tibet Plateau uplift and sub-tropical monsoon climate region,and sea-level *** research results show that the environment does not behave in a way easily understood by the traditional disciplinary *** man is clearly a contributing factor to certain Global Change aspects,such as underground coal fires,desertification,land use changes etc.,many of the aspects of Global Change are naturally occurring phenomena which have been changing over centuries,and will continue to do so,no matter what actions we undertake to reverse these ***,in their conclusions,the authors propose that the communities involved in Digital Earth modelling and in Global Change research co-operate closer to overcome the limitations inherent in the current‘conventional’scientific approach,where scientists have very much stayed within their respective scientific *** an integrated approach will enable us to build the next level of scientific infrastructure required to understand and predict naturally occurring environmental changes,as well as

Land cover is a fundamental variable that links many facets of the natural environment and a key driver of global environmental *** in its status can have significant ramifications at local,regional and global ***,it is imperative to map land cover at a range of spatial and temporal scales with a view to understanding the inherent patterns for effective characterization,prediction and management of the potential environmental *** paper presents the results of an effort to map land cover patterns in Kinangop division,Kenya,using geospatial *** is a geographic locality that has experienced rapid land use transformations since Kenya's independence culminating in uncontrolled land cover changes and loss of *** changes in land use/cover constrain the natural resource base and presuppose availability of quantitative and spatially explicit land cover data for understanding the inherent patterns and facilitating specific and multi-purpose land use planning and *** such,the study had two objectives viz.(i) mapping the spatial patterns of land cover in Kinangop using remote sensing and GIS and;(ii) evaluating the quality of the resultant land cover *** satellite imagery acquired in January 23,2007 was procured and field data gathered between September l0 and October 16,*** latter were used for training the maximum likelihood classifier and validating the resultant land cover *** land cover classification yielded 5 classes,overall accuracy of 83.5%and kappa statistic of 0.79,which conforms to the acceptable standards of land cover mapping. This qualifies its application in environmental decision-making and manifests the utility of geospatial techniques in mapping land resources.

Estimation of large-scale land surface temperature from satellite images is of great importance for the study of climate change. This is especially true for the most challenging areas, such as the Tibetan Plateau （TP）. In this paper, two split window algorithms （SWAs）, one for the NOAA’s Advanced Very High Resolu-tion Radiometer （AVHRR）, and the other for the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer （MODIS）, were applied to retrieve land surface temperature （LST） over the TP simultaneously. AVHRR and MODIS data from 17 January, 14 April, 23 July, and 16 October 2003 were selected as the cases for winter, spring, summer, and autumn, respectively. Firstly, two key parameters （emissivity and water vapor content） were calculated at the pixel scale. Then, the derived LST was compared with in situ measurements from the Coordinated Enhanced Observing Period （CEOP） Asia-Australia Monsoon Project （CAMP） on the TP （CAMP/Tibet） area. They were in good accordance with each other, with an average percentage error （PE） of 10.5% for AVHRR data and 8.3% for MODIS data, meaning the adopted SWAs were applicable in the TP area. The derived LST also showed a wide range and a clear seasonal difference. The results from AVHRR were also in agreement with MODIS, with the latter usually displaying a higher level of accuracy.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the hydrological impacts of climate change on the water balance of Lake Tana in Ethiopia. Impact assessments are by downscaled General Circulation Model (GCM) output and hydrological modeling. For A2 and B2 emission scenarios, precipitation, maximum and minimum temperature estimates from the HadCM3 GCM were used. GCM output was downscaled using the Statistical DownScaling Model (SDSM 4.2). Impact analyses were applied for three future time periods: early, mid and late 21st century. Over-lake evaporation is estimated by Hardgrave’s method, and over-lake precipitation is estimated by inverse distance weighing interpolation, whereas inflows from gauged and ungauged catchments are simulated by the HBV hydrological model. Findings indicate increases in maximum and minimum temperature on annual base for both emission scenarios. The projection of mean annual over lake precipitation for both A2 and B2 emission scenarios shows increasing pattern for 21st century in comparison to the baseline period. The increase of mean annual precipitation for A2 emission scenario is 9% (112 mm/year), 10% (125 mm/year) and 11% (137 mm/year) for the three future periods respectively. B2 emission scenario mean annual precipitation shows increase by 9% (111 mm/year), 10% (122 mm/year) and 10% (130 mm/year) respectively for the three future periods. Findings indicate consistent increases of lake storage for all three future periods for both A2 and B2 emission scenarios.
