SAGeLogE: A decision Support System for Students’ Accommodation Management

SAGeLogE is the acronym of “Système d’Aide à la gestion de Logements étudiants” which means student accommodation management support system. It’s a multi-criteria decision support system designed to manage accommodation allocation for university students. Within SAGeLogE we developed the “Minimum of Ranks” (MIRA) aggregation method. MIRA method involves the application of multi-criteria decision-making methods (MCDM) to initially obtain different ranking. Thus, we chose the Weighted Sum Method (WSM), Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) and Combined Compromise Solution (CoCoSo) methods to be implemented in SAGeLogE. To prioritize the weights of criteria, the Anality Hierarchy Process (AHP) method was used. The interest of using the MIRA method was to obtain a compromised ranking coming from these three multi-criteria decision-making methods (WSM, TOPSIS, CoCoSo). So, we know that the accommodation to be allocated to students is always lower than the number of accommodation requests received by the organization. Thus, SAGeLogE proposed a technique that makes it easier to select students ranked by the multi-criteria decision-making and MIRA methods according to a method of calculation of quota of available accommodations within university residences. Finally, university accommodation managers had a wide choice of student ranking according to the methods implemented in SAGeLogE. The SAGeLogE experiment was carried out on the site of Toamasina University in Madagascar for an academic year with 2026 student accommodation applications received. The experimentation showed the ability of SAGeLogE to achieve the result.

We summarize the current knowledge on parasitism-related invasion processes of the globally invasive Rattus lineages,originating from Asia,and how these invasions have impacted the local epidemiology of rodent-borne diseases.Parasites play an important role in the invasion processes and successes of their hosts through multiple biological mechanisms such as“parasite release,”“immunocompetence advantage,”“biotic resistance”and“novel weapon.”Parasites may also greatly increase the impact of invasions by spillover of parasites and other pathogens,introduced with invasive hosts,into new hosts,potentially leading to novel emerging diseases.Another potential impact is the ability of the invader to amplify local parasites by spillback.In both cases,local fauna and humans may be exposed to new health risks,which may decrease biodiversity and potentially cause increases in human morbidity and mortality.Here we review the current knowledge on these processes and propose some research priorities.

A comparative study of the sorption of O-PAHs and PAHs onto soils to understand their transport in soils and groundwater

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)and their oxygenated derivates(O-PAHs)are identified in soils and groundwater of industrialized sites and contribute to the risk for Humans and the environment.Nevertheless,data are scarce in literature concerning their retention and transfer in soils and no soil-water partition coefficients are available for these compounds.Sorption of two PAHs,fluorene and acenaphthene and two O-PAHs,9H-fluorenone and dibenzofuran onto two soils with different organic carbon contents was evaluated and compared by determining their sorption isotherms.Effect of ionic strength and liquid to solid ratio,on fluorene and fluorenone sorption was also evaluated.Sorption equilibrium is achieved within less than 24 hr of mixing and linear sorption models best fit the isotherm data.Acenaphthene and dibenzofuran are similarly sorbed onto the soil.KD of fluorene is higher than the one of fluorenone,showing a smaller affinity of fluorenone towards the solid phase.This means that O-PAH could form larger contamination plumes in groundwater than PAHs.decreasing the L/S ratio from 100 to 50 and 30,increases the sorption of fluorenone onto the soil by 56% and 67%respectively,while the sorption of fluorene is slightly increased.Increasing the ionic strength of the aqueous phase also modifies the sorption of fluorenone,contrary to the sorption of fluorene which is slightly affected.

Rodents are recognized reservoir hosts for many human zoonotic pathogens.The current trends resulting from anthropocene defaunation suggest that in the future they,along with other small mammals,are likely to become the dominant mammals in almost all human-modified environments.Recent intricate studies on bat-borne emerging diseases have highlighted that many gaps exist in our understanding of the zoonotic transmission of rodent-borne pathogens.This has emphasized the need for scientists interested in rodent-borne diseases to integrate rodent ecology into their analysis of rodent-borne pathogen transmission in order to identify in more detail the mechanisms of spillover and chains of transmission.Further studies are required to better understand the true impact of rodent abundance and the importance of pathogen sharing and circulation in multi-host–multi-pathogen communities.We also need to explore in more depth the roles of generalist and abundant species as the potential links between pathogen-sharing,co-infections and disease transmission.

Population genetic structure of the biological control agent Macrolophus pygmaeus in Mediterranean agroecosystems

Biological control of agricultural pests relies on knowledge of agroecosystem functionality, particularly when affected by the use of mass-produced biological agents. Incorporating pre- and/or post-release information such as genetic diversity and struc- ture on these agents using molecular-based approaches could advance our knowledge of how they perform in agroecosystems. We evaluated the population genetics of Macrolo- phus pygmaeus, the most widely used predatory mirid against many arthropod pests of greenhouse crops in the Mediterranean region, using the mitochondrial Cytb sequence and microsatellite data, and population genetics and phylogeny approaches. We investigated commercially mass-produced insects （i.e., commercial insects either mass-reared in the laboratory for many generations, or purchased by farmers and released in the greenhouses） and ＂wild＂ insects （i.e., that occur naturally outside or are collected in nature for release in the greenhouses）. The mirids were mainly collected in agroecosystems in which solana- ceous plants are grown in northern Spain, southern France and Greece. Both molecular markers and approaches distinguished 2 genetically differentiated populations. The less genetically diverse population, hereafter named the ＂commercial＂ strain included all indi- viduals from laboratory mass-rearings and most releases of commercially bred individuals. The most genetically diverse population mainly comprised individuals originating from noncultivated environments, or from releases of＂wild＂ individuals. Rare examples of hy- bridization between M. pygmaeus from the 2 populations were observed and asymmetric gene flow was revealed. These findings provide new insights into what happens to M. pyg- maeus released in the agroecosystems we studied, and show that it is possible to monitor some commercial strains.

Self-sealing of fractures in indurated claystones measured by water and gas flow

Self-sealing of fractures in the indurated Callovo-Oxfordian(COX)and Opalinus(OPA)claystones,which are considered as host rocks for disposal of radioactive waste,was investigated on artificially fractured samples.The samples were extracted from four lithological facies relatively rich in clay mineral,carbonate and quartz,respectively.The self-sealing of fractures was measured by fracture closure,water permeability variation,gas penetration,and recovery of gas-induced pathways.Most of the fractured samples exhibited a dramatic reduction inwater permeability to low levels that is close to that of intact rock,depending on their mineralogical composition,fracture intensity,confining stress,and load duration.The self-sealing capacity of the clay-rich samples is higher than that of the carbonate-rich and sandy ones.Significant effects of sample size and fracture intensity were identified.The sealed fractures become gas-tight for certain in-jection pressures.However,the measured gas breakthrough pressures are still lower than the confining stresses.The gas-induced pathways can recover when contacting water.These important findings imply that fractures in such indurated claystones can effectively recover to hinder water transport but allow gas release under relatively low pressures without compromising the rock integrity.

Background: The occurrence of bacterial infections sometimes involves synanthropic flies and cockroaches, as mechanical vectors of pathogenic microorganisms. The aim of this study was to identify the different species of flies and cockroaches that cohabit with humans in the city of Cotonou and determine the contribution of Musca domestica and Periplaneta americana in the transmission of bacteria responsible for infections in humans. Methods: Capture sessions during the day for flies and at night for cockroaches were carried out in 4 arrondissements of the city of Cotonou. The insects collected were transported to the Center of Research entomological of Cotonou for identification, then sent to the Section Hygiene of Water and Food for microbiological analysis, enumeration and testing for human pathogenic bacteria. Results: A total of 351 flies and 26 cockroaches were collected at the sites, including two synanthropic species belonging to two families each. Musca domestica and Periplaneta americana were the most abundant species found after identification in the city of Cotonou. Thermo-tolerant coliforms and Escherichia coli were found on all specimens at varying concentrations. Salmonella spp. bacteria were identified in the fly population from the Dantokpa dump. Conclusion: Flies and cockroaches can transmit microorganisms to humans. The presence of Salmonella spp. among the specimens revealed that infections frequently caused by contaminated food or water are also transmitted to humans by flies. The presence of these germs on flies and cockroaches represents a potential risk of mechanical transmission to humans. It is, therefore, essential to continue investigations in order to assess the species of bacteria propagated, improve control strategies against these troublesome insects and adopt better hygiene conditions for better living.

Physico-Chemical and Mineralogical Characterizations of Two Togolese Clays for Geopolymer Synthesis

Geopolymers are an alternative to Portland cement, well known for their contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. Finding materials that can validly replace Portland cement is a challenge. It is in this logic that this work was undertaken with the objective of characterizing two local clay resources of Togo as raw materials for geopolymers. The physico-chemical properties of these clays were determined by characterization using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric (TGA) and elemental analysis (ICP-OES). The results show that these clays contain kaolinite and therefore can be used in the formulation of geopolymers. The characterized clays underwent heat treatments transforming the crystalline phases into more reactive amorphous phases and then were activated by an alkaline solution in order to formulate the geopolymer materials. These elaborated materials were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared to identify the types of bonds formed. The results of these analyses show that these two local clays are well suited to be used in synthesizing geopolymers. Our future work will focus on the constraints of consolidation as well as the mechanical properties of these geopolymer materials.

Aerospace product development and manufacturing are key components of the air transport system. At national levels in developed countries, the aerospace industry is considered as a highly strategic sector. A solid national aerospace industry is therefore a symbol of strength. Countries are pragmatic: the positive impact of a well-developed transportation network on economic growth is indubitable and civil aircraft production is a key element of this network. Countries may also assert their sovereignty by being recognized players in the defence segment of aerospace. This paper will look at the cases of France and Quebec where local governments have invested significant public funding in poles of competitiveness (in the case of France) and clusters (in the case of Quebec). While our examination of the France and Quebec aerospace scenes reveals a surprisingly large number of groupings, it does not indicate that all their members, large and small, equally benefit from participating in them. In this thick institutional environment, aerospace clusters and poles of competitiveness may compete against each other and become self-serving rather than representing and promoting their members.

The widespread use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) is a major intervention method for malaria control. While coverage of LLINs has increased, there is a need for information on the operational effectiveness of nets deployed in the field in the context of malaria vector resistance to insecticides used for impregnation. The development of specific anti-malarial biomarkers to assess exposure to mosquito bites is an important development in evaluations. The aim of this study was to characterize the human IgG antibody response to Anopheles gSG6-P1 saliva, a salivary peptide antigen previously shown to be a relevant biomarker of human exposure to Anopheles bites, in order to assess the LLINs under field conditions in areas of low and high vector resistance to insecticides. We analyzed data from 240 randomly selected children ( 0.05). Furthermore, the same finding was observed for antibody expression in children whether or not they used LLINs on the day before the survey (p = 0.7724). Similarly, gender and especially age, major factors of variation in the adaptive immune response, did not have a significant effect on IgG expression.
