Grain yield in cereal crops is a complex trait controlled by multiple genes and influenced by developmental processes and environment. Here we report the effects of alleles Rht8 and Ppd-D1 a on plant height, time to heading, and grain yield and its component traits. Association analysis and quantitative trait locus mapping using phenotypic data from 15 environments led to the following conclusions. First, both Rht8 and Ppd-D1 a reduce plant height. However, Ppd-D1 a but not Rht8 causes earlier ***, both Rht8 and Ppd-D1 a promote grain yield and affect component traits. Their combined effects are substantially larger than those conferred by either allele ***, promotion of grain yield by Rht8 and Ppd-D1 a is through increasing fertile spikelet number. We speculate that Rht8 and Ppd-D1 a act independently and additively in control of plant height, grain yield and yield component. Combination of the two alleles is desirable for adjusting plant height and enhancing grain yield and abiotic stress tolerance.

Between the alternative sources available for the electricity production, still lacks reliability for the production in base units. For the electricity production from 500 MW to 1,000 MW or more, the coal-fired thermal and nuclear power plants with uranium have proved competitive and with a high level of reliability and maturation, besides presenting the fuel supply security. This paper presents an analysis of technical feasibility for the choice of the best technology for generating electricity on a large scale, based on coal-fired thermal or nuclear power plant using uranium. This paper takes in account the availability of fuel sources, investments costs, thermal power generation systems, pollutants emission and mitigation technologies, global efficiency, fuel consumption, costs of electricity, construction time and an average lifespan of the installation. Thus the analysis allows the most rational choice of technology for the production of electricity with lower electricity costs and lower COz emissions.

Herein, the electrochemical performance and the mechanism of potassium insertion/deinsertion in orthorhombic V_(2)O_(5) nanoparticles are studied. The V2O5 electrode displays an initial potassiation/depotassiation capacity of 200 mAh g^(−1)/217 mAh g^(−1) in the voltage range 1.5–4.0 V vs. K^(+)/K at C/12 rate, suggesting fast kinetics for potassium insertion/deinsertion. However, the capacity quickly fades during cycling, reaching 54 mAh g^(−1) at the 31st cycle. Afterwards, the capacity slowly increases up to 80 mAh g^(−1) at the 200th cycle. The storage mechanism upon K ions insertion into V2O5 is elucidated. In operando synchrotron diffraction reveals that V_(2)O_(5) first undergoes a solid solution to form K_(0.6)V_(2)O_(5) phase and then, upon further K ions insertion, it reveals coexistence of a solid solution and a two-phase reaction. During K ions deinsertion, the coexistence of solid solution and the two-phase reaction is identified together with an irreversible process. In operando XAS confirms the reduction/oxidation of vanadium during the K insertion/extraction with some irreversible contributions. This is consistent with the results obtained from synchrotron diffraction, ex situ Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Moreover, ex situ XPS confirms the “cathode electrolyte interphase” (CEI) formation on the electrode and the decomposition of CEI film during cycling.

It is presented that a feasibility assessment of solar preheating of steam boiler feed water for opened vapor systems. Data from a medium sized dairy industry near Rio de Janeiro city, in Brazil, is used to compose a case study. Forty eight solar heating system computer simulations were carried out in TRNSYS （transient system simulation software）, for a range of design parameters corresponding to the 5% best economic results of a series of 2,700 simpler simulations （φ,f-chart method）, programmed on Matlab. It has been used TMY （typical meteorological year） hourly weather data from Rio de Janeiro. Investment cost was composed from both commercial and literature values, while revenue was based on the avoided consumption of fuel for LPG （liquefied petroleum gas）, natural gas and fuel oil, with only the first showing economically feasible. The results, however, made it possible to address environmentally sound public policies to encourage industrial solar energy use.

In the opening salvos of his engaging article, How Stomata Resolve the Dilemma of Opposing Priorities, Raschke （1976） wrote that “Land plants are in a dilemma throughout their lives： assimilation of CO2 from the atmosphere requires intensive gas exchange; the prevention of excessive water loss demands that gas exchange be kept low.” What seemed a rarefied musing of a plant academic nearly 40 years ago has since broadened into alobal environmental concerns.
