Natural locomotion such as walking,crawling,and swimming relies on spatially controlled deformation of soft tissues,which could allow efficient interaction with the external *** one of the ideal candidates for biomimetic materials,hydrogels can exhibit versatile bionic ***,it remains an enormous challenge to transfer these insitu deformations to locomotion,particularly above complex ***,inspired by the crawling mode of inchworms,an isotropic hydrogel with thermoresponsiveness could evolve to an anisotropic hydrogel actuator via interfacial diffusion polymerization,further evolving to multisection structure and exhibiting adaptive deformation with diverse degrees of ***,a dynamic mortise-and-tenon interlock could be generated through the interaction between the self-deformation of the hydrogel actuator and rough terrains,inducing continual multidimensional locomotion on various artificial rough substrates and natural sandy ***,benefiting from the powerful mechanical energy transfer capability,the crawlable hydrogel actuators could also be utilized as hydrogel motors to activate static cargos to overstep complex terrains,which exhibit the potential application of a biomimetic mechanical discoloration ***,we believe that this design principle and control strategy may be of potential interest to the field of deformable materials,soft robots,and biomimetic devices.

The study was conducted to investigate the effect of sludge retention on bacterial community composition of membrane bioreactor(MBR)treating synthetic hospital *** removal of four pharmaceuticals,namely carbamazepine,estradiol,venlafaxine,and ibuprofen in MBR,was studied at varying sludge retention time(SRT)duration of 100,45,and 15 days and hydraulic retention time(HRT)of 18 *** removal of ibuprofen and estradiol was constant at varying SRT;however,a negligible removal of carbamazepine and low removal of venlafaxine was observed(<20%).The study suggested that the SRT of 45 days in MBR could provide maximum treatment efficiency via decreasing membrane *** effect of sludge age and pharmaceutical presence on the bacterial community was investigated via high-throughput *** study reveals that the variation in SRT affects the dynamics of the bacterial community *** instance,the dominant bacterium Caldimonas of SRT 100 was disappeared at lower ***,the profile of the dominant genus of the SRTs varied greatly from each other.

Oxygen reduction/evolution reactions(ORR/OERs)catalysts play a key role in the metal‐air battery and water‐splitting ***,we developed a facile template‐free method to fabricate a new type of non–noble metal‐based hybrid catalyst which consists of binary FeNi alloy/nitride nanocrystals with graphitic‐shell and biomass‐derived N‐doped carbon(NC)(FexNiyN@C/NC).This novel nanostructure exhibits superior performance for ORR/OER,which can be attributed to the strong interactions between the graphitic‐shell encapsulated FeNi alloy/nitride nanocrystals and the N‐doped porous carbon *** X‐ray absorption spectroscopy technique was employed to reveal the underlying mechanisms for the excellent *** assembled Zn‐air battery device exhibits outstanding charging/discharging performance and cycling stability,indicating the great potential of this type of novel catalysts.

NiFe composites have been regarded as promising candidates to replace commercial noble-based electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction(OER).However,their practical applications still suffer from poor conductivity,limited activity,*** address these issues,herein,by utilizing three-dimensional covalent organic framework(3D-COF)with porous confined structures and abundant coordinate N sites as the precursor,the partially oxidized Ni_(3)Fe nanoalloys wrapped by Ndoped carbon(N-C)layers are constructed via simple pyrolysis and subsequent *** from the 3D curved hierarchical structure,high-conductivity of Ni_(3)Fe and N-C layers,well-distributed active sites,the as-synthesized O-Ni_(3)Fe-NC catalyst demonstrates excellent activity and durability for catalyzing *** and theoretical analyses disclose that both high-temperature oxidization and the OER process greatly promote the formation and exposure of the Ni(Fe)OOH active species as well as lower charge transfer resistance,inducing its optimized OER *** robust graphitized N-C layers with superior conductivity and their couplings with oxidized Ni_(3)Fe nanoalloys are beneficial for stabilizing catalytic centers,thereby imparting O-Ni_(3)Fe-N-C with such outstanding *** work not only provides a rational guidance for enriching and stabilizing high-activity catalytic sites towards OER but also offers more insights into the structural evolution of NiFe-based OER catalysts.

In this paper,we review the past and recent works on generating intense terahertz(THz)pulses from photoconductive antennas(PCAs).We will focus on two types of large-aperture photoconductive antenna(LAPCA)that can generate high-intensity THz pulses(a)those with large-aperture dipoles and(b)those with interdigitated *** will first describe the principles of THz generation from *** critical parameters for improving the peak intensity of THz radiation from LAPCAs are *** will then describe the saturation and limitation process of LAPCAs along with the advantages and disadvantages of working with widebandgap semiconductor ***,we will explain the evolution of LAPCA with interdigitated electrodes,which allows one to reduce the photoconductive gap size,and thus obtain higher bias fields while applying lower *** will also describe recent achievements in intense THz pulses generated by interdigitated LAPCAs based on wide-bandgap semiconductors driven by ampli-fied ***,we will discuss the future perspectives of THz pulse generation using LAPCAs.

This paper reviews the work done by research- ers at inrs and UBC in the field of integrated microwave photonics （IMWPs） using silicon based waveguide Bragg gratings （WBGs）. The grating design methodology is discussed in detail, including practical device fabrication considerations. On-chip implementations of various fun- darnental photonic signal processing units, including Fourier transformers, Hilbert transformers, ultrafast pulse shapers etc., are reviewed. Recent progress on WBGs- based IMWP subsystems, such as true time delay elements, phase shifters, real time frequency identification systems, is also discussed.

Although spermatozoa are formed during spermatogenesis in the testis, testicular spermatozoa are immature and cannot swim or fertilize. These critical spermatozoal functions are acquired in the epididymis where a specific luminal environment is created by the blood-epididymal barrier; proteins secreted by epididymal principal cells bind to maturing spermatozoa and regulate the maturational process of the spermatozoa. In the epididymis, epithelial cell-cell interactions are mediated by adhering junctions, necessary for cell adhesion, and by tight junctions, which form the blood-epididymal barrier. The regulation of these cellular junctions is thought to represent a key determinant in the process of sperm maturation within the epididymis. Tight junctions between adjacent principal cells permit the formation of a specific microenvironment in the lumen of the epididymis that is essential for sperm maturation. Although we have made significant progress in understanding epididymal function and the blood-epididymal barrier, using animal models, there is limited information on the human epididymis. If we are to understand the normal and pathological conditions attributable to human epididymal function, we must clearly establish the physiological, cellular and molecular regulation of the human epididymis, develop tools to characterize these functions and develop clinical strategies that will use epididymal functions to improve treatment of infertility. （Asian J Androl 2007 July; 9： 463- 475）

In this work a review of existing fire-detector types has been carried out along with the development of a low cost, portable, and reliable microcontroller based automated fire alarm system for remotely alerting any fire incidents in household or industrial premises. The aim of the system designed is to alert the distant property-owner efficiently and quickly by sending short message (SMS) via GSM network. A Linear integrated temperature sensor detects temperature beyond preset value whereas semiconductor type sensor detects presence of smoke or gas from fire hazards. The sensor units are connected via common data line to ATMega8L AVR microcontroller. A SIM300CZ GSM kit based network module, capable of operating in standard GSM bands, has been used to send alert messages. The system is implemented on printed circuit board (PCB) and tested under different experimental conditions to evaluate its performances.
