Dynamics of phosphorus in sediments of a naturally acidic lake

The mechanisms which controls the fixation and/or release of P in sediment of an extremely acidic lake（pH = 2.0 to 3.0） and its response to the influence of eutrophic urban waste water were *** results,in the chemical composition,in the mineralogy of the sediment and in the material as obtained from sediment traps,show that the lake sediments are mainly volcanic material reflecting volcanic features of the *** sedimentation rate calculated for the lake(2.5×10;mg m;day;) was higher than that observed in other similar glacial lakes in both Andean Patagonia and also elsewhere in the *** Total Phosphorus concentration in sediments was higher than figures reported by other authors for mining acid lakes,and the main fraction of P was found associated with organic *** was no control by Fe or Al on P,because both are in solution at pH < *** was concluded that changes in the natural input of nutrients（derivatives of Copahue volcano fluid,the discharge of sewage,or basin run-off） are responsible for a high concentration of SRP and N-NH;in the *** experiments showed that sediments have no ability to retain phosphorus and a continuous release of P from the sediments into the water column was *** assays where the pH was artificially increased showed that the P still remains in solution until at least pH *** was concluded that changes in the natural input of nutrients due to:1) the volcanic fluids,2) the increase in sewage charges,or 3) surface runoff upstream,maintain a high trophic state with high concentrations of dissolved P and N-NH;,although the threshold of neutral pH in the lake is *** study will enable a better understanding about of the mechanism of release/fixation of phosphorus in acidic sediments in order to assist in making decisions regarding the conservation and management of this natural environment.

The shiny cowbird Molothrus bonariensis parasitizes many species with different life-history traits and has a detrimental effect on the survival of the progeny of the *** response,hosts have developed numerous antiparasitic ***,we examined the effects of brood parasitism by shiny cowbird on the clutch and brood sizes(83 nests)in a small host,the black-backed water tyrant Fluvicola *** also studied whether the death of parasite nestlings was related to the care of the foster parents and whether the host had any antiparasitic defense against the shiny *** results indicate that brood parasitism significantly decreased the host hatching and fledging *** majority of nest failures(57%)were caused by brood *** cowbird parasitism occurred in 52%of nests and the intensity of parasitism was 1.23±0.53 eggs per parasitized *** the total host eggs,54%were *** the incubation stage,20 nests(47%)were abandoned because of egg punctures by shiny cowbirds *** two parasitic fledglings were recorded,while the remaining nestlings either died from starvation(n=12)or predation(n=3).Foster parents abandoned parasitic nestlings between 5 and 10 days *** findings demonstrate that the shiny cowbird has very low rates of fledging success when parasitizing black-backed water ***,parasitism had a high reproductive cost in the black-backed water tyrant because a very low proportion(7%)of the parasitized nests(n=43)were successful.

During the last decades the study of functional morphology received more attention incorporating more detailed data corresponding to the internal anatomy that together contribute for a better understanding of the functional basis in *** we focus on 2 lizard families,Tropiduridae and Liolaemidae,and use information related to muscle-tendinous and external morphology traits of hind *** investigate whether the value of the traits analyzed tend to exhibit a reduced phenotypic variation produced by stabilizing selection,and whether species showing specialization in their habitat use will also exhibit special morphological features related to *** a result,we identified that evolution of hind limb traits is mainly explained by the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck model,suggesting stabilizing *** and tropidurids show clear ecomorphological trends in the variables considered,with sand lizards presenting the most specialized morphological *** ecomorphological trends differ between the 2 lineages,and traits of internal morphology tend to be more flexible than those of external morphology,restricting the ability to identify ecomorphs shared between these 2 *** traits of external morphology likely explain such restriction,as ecomorphs have been historically defined in other lizard clades based on variation of external morphology.

Latitudinal pattern of the thermal sensitivity of running speed in the endemic lizard Liolaemus multimaculatus

Physiological performance in lizards may be affected by climate across latitudinal or altitudinal *** the coastal dune barriers in central-eastern Argentina,the annual maximum environmental temperature decreases up to 2℃ from low to high latitudes,while the mean relative humidity of the air decreases from 50%to 25%.Liolaemus multimaculatus,a lizard in the family Liolaemidae,is restricted to these coastal *** investigated the locomotor performance of the species at 6 different sites distributed throughout its range in these dune *** inquired whether locomotor performance metrics were sensitive to the thermal regime attributable to *** thermal performance breadth increased from 7%to 82%with latitude,due to a decrease in its critical thermal minimum of up to 5℃ at higher *** from high latitude sites showed a thermal optimum,that is,the body temperature at which maximum speed is achieved,up to 4℃lower than that of lizards from the low *** relatively low temperatures,the maximum running speed of high-latitude individuals was faster than that of low-latitude *** parameters of locomotor performance were labile,decreasing as a function of *** results show populations of *** adjust thermal physiology to cope with local climatic *** suggests that thermal sensitivity responds to the magnitude of latitudinal fluctuations in environmental temperature.

Effects of underground explosions on soil and structures

Much effort has been dedicated to the study of underground explosions because they pose a major threat to people and structures below or above the *** this regard,it is especially important to model the propagation of blast waves in soil and their effects on *** main phenomena caused by underground explosive detonation that must be addressed are crater or camouflet formation,shock wave and elastic–plastic wave propagation in soil,and soil-structure *** phenomena can be numerically simulated using hydrocodes,but much care must be taken to obtain reliable *** objective of this study is to analyze the ability of a hydrocode and simple soil models that do not require much calibration to approximately reproduce experimental and empirical results related to different buried blast events and to provide general guidelines for the simulation of this type of *** this regard,crater formation,soil ejecta,blast wave propagation in soil,and their effects on structures below and above the ground are numerically simulated using different soil models and parameters;the results are *** properties of soil have a significant effect on structures,the ejecta,and the propagation of shock waves in ***,the model of the soil to study these phenomena must be carefully *** their effect on the diameter of a crater is insignificant.

Phosphorus fractions and sorption dynamics in the sediments of two Ca-SO4 water reservoirs in the central Argentine Andes

Phosphorus（P） fractionation and sorption behavior were studied in the sediments of two calcium-sulfate(Ca-SO4: Ca2+170 mg L-1; SO42-400 mg L-1) water reservoirs in the southern central Argentine Andes-El Carrizal Reservoir（ECR）,which stratifies in summer and El Nihuil Reservoir（ENR）,which is vertically mixed throughout the year. Sediment size classes reflected the lithology of both basins and the reservoirs relative location: ECR（downstream from a valley adjacent to a mountain environment） had higher clay proportions while the sand fraction was more important in ENR（just next to a mountain environment）.In both reservoirs, the chemical composition revealed low alteration and calcium enrichment. Total P content was relatively high(1.1-1.6 mg P kg-1dry weight) as expected from the contribution of marine formations. P fractionation was dominated by Ca-P（ECR, 69% and ENR, 63%） followed by organic-P（23%）in summer-anoxic ECR and by iron/aluminum（Fe/Al）-P（27%） in oxic ENR. Batch experiments showed that sorption behavior in ECR had a typical Langmuir isotherm plot while in ENR that model fitted only at low dissolved P values(<5 mg PL-1) and co-precipitation evidence was observed at higher P concentrations. It is proposed that lower Fe/Al-P content in anoxic（ECR） vs. oxic（ENR） sediments results from the P released from iron-bound phosphorus due to sulfate reduction-ferrous sulfide formation in an anoxic environment. This condition should enable ECR sediments to adsorb P into fresh oxidized iron,and ENR sediments to co-precipitate P with calcium due to Fe/Al-P saturation, as observed in batch experiments. This paper constitutes the first description of phosphorus content and dynamics in reservoir sediments in arid central western Argentina, where water sulfate concentrations are naturally high due to basin lithology.

Background Treeline ecotones of Mediterranean ecoregions have been affected by the increasing intensity and severity of droughts. Even though the effect of droughts on forest dynamics has been widely documented, knowledge is relatively scarce of how extreme climate episodes affect the hydraulic structure and, therefore, the phys-iology of woody plants. The Mediterranean Andes have experienced an uninterrupted period of drought since 2010, including an extremely dry year in 2019 with approximately 80% rainfall deficit. Here, we investigated shifts in wood anatomical and physiological traits of Kageneckia angustifolia, an endemic treeline species, in response to this drought *** We evaluated the xylem plasticity of three K. angustifolia populations across their natural distribution(31–35° SL) based on anatomical(vessel structure and distribution) and physiological(intrinsic water-use efficiency) variables in the tree rings. We focused on the period 2000–2020 that corresponds to before the megadrought(2000–2007),(ii) megadrought(2008–2018) and(iii) hyperdrought(2019–2020). The variables were annualized and analyzed by linear mixed-effects *** Our results provide insights to the anatomical and physiological mechanisms underlying the resilience of treeline forests to persistent droughts in central Chile. We found that the extreme drought in 2019–2020 triggered shifts in vessel size and frequency that increased hydraulic safety. These significant shifts in vessel traits occurred in parallel with a decrease in pit aperture area and an increase in water-use efficiency, further increasing the resilience of K. angustifolia to extreme drought *** Our results revealed coordinated shifts in vessel size and frequency and water-use efficiency in response to the megadrought, thereby reducing vulnerability to hydraulic failure. A new look at the first dinosaur discovered in Antarctica: reappraisal of Antarctopelta oliveroi(Ankylosauria: Parankylosauria)

The first dinosaur discovered in the Antarctic continent was the ankylosaur Antarctopelta oliveroi in the 1980s. Nevertheless， since then several hypotheses of phylogenetical relationships have been proposed because these have been depended on how the skeletal remains have been interpreted. The main obstacle for clarifying its phylogenetic position is that many portions of the skeleton remain unknown， in addition to the presence of unknown characters in typical ankylosaurs. Considered an ankylosaurid， nodosaurid， or even a chimaera， a recent proposal based on mostly complete material of a new ankylosaur from Chilean Patagonia provided support for a novel phylogenetic hypothesis: Antarctopelta and other southern ankylosaurs are an early branching clade， the Parankylosauria， whose origin probably dates to the Late Jurassic. In the light of this new view， a redescription of the available skeletal remains is provided together with a new reconstruction of the first Antarctic dinosaur known to the science community.
