Joint alignment and steering to manage interference

In wireless communication networks,mobile users in overlapping areas may experience severe interference,therefore,designing effective Interference Management(im)methods is crucial to improving network performance.However,when managing multiple disturbances from the same source,it may not be feasible to use existing im methods such as Interference Alignment(IA)and Interference Steering(IS)exclusively.It is because with IA,the aligned interference becomes indistinguishable at its desired Receiver(Rx)under the cost constraint of Degrees-of-Freedom(DoF),while with IS,more transmit power will be consumed in the direct and repeated application of IS to each interference.To remedy these deficiencies,Interference Alignment Steering(IAS)is proposed by incorporating IA and IS and exploiting their advantages in im.With IAS,the interfering Transmitter(Tx)first aligns one interference incurred by the transmission of one data stream to a one-dimensional subspace orthogonal to the desired transmission at the interfered Rx,and then the remaining interferences are treated as a whole and steered to the same subspace as the aligned interference.Moreover,two improved versions of IAS,i.e.,IAS with Full Adjustment at the Interfering Tx(IAS-FAIT)and Interference Steering and Alignment(ISA),are presented.The former considers the influence of IA on the interfering user-pair's performance.The orthogonality between the desired signals at the interfered Rx can be maintained by adjusting the spatial characteristics of all interferences and the aligned interference components,thus ensuring the Spectral Efficiency(SE)of the interfering communication pairs.Under ISA,the power cost for IS at the interfered Tx is minimized,hence improving SE performance of the interfered communication-pairs.Since the proposed methods are realized at the interfering and interfered Txs cooperatively,the expenses of im are shared by both communication-pairs.Our in-depth simulation results show that joint use of IA and IS can effectively manage multiple disturbances

Adaptive evolvement of information age C^4ISR structure

Command, control, communication, computing, intel- ligence, surveillance and reconnaissance （C^4ISR） in information age is a complex system whose structure always changes ac- tively or passively during the warfare. Therefore, it is important to optimize the structure, especially in ambiguous and quick-tempo modern warfare. This paper proposes an adaptive evolvement mechanism for the C^4ISR structure to survive the changeable warfare. Firstly, the information age C^4ISR structure is defined and modeled based on the complex network theory. Secondly, taking the observe, orient, decide and act （OODA） model into consideration, four kinds of loops in the C^4ISR structure are pro- posed and their coefficient of networked effects （CNE） is further defined. Then, the adaptive evolvement mechanisms of the four kinds of loops are presented respectively. Finally, taking the joint air-defense C^4ISR as an example, simulation experiments are im- plemented, which validate the evolvement mechanism and show that the information age C41SR structure has some characteristics of small-world network and scale-free network.

How the outer substance could penetrate through the skin lies in the stratum corneum, because it is the main barrier in the multi-layers of the skin. Supposing the keratin cell with a special geometry as tetrakaidecahedron, the penetration property of stratum corneum was the key problem which was numerically simulated with finite element method. At first the discretization of the stratum corneum region was given in two steps： first, the discretization of the keratin cell; second, the discretization of fattiness that surrounds the keratin. Then there was the work of numerical simulation. In this procedure, the finite element method and the multi-grid method were used. The former was to obtain the discretization of basic elements; the latter was to decrease the high frequency error. At last the visualization of the numerical simulation was shown.

Extended research on software hybrid testing combining reliability and directed testing

The software reliability testing has many disadvantages in practice, such as high complexity of constructing operational profiles and poor fault detection efficiency. Oppositely, the directed testing with a high fault detection rate is incapable of estimating reliability quantificationally. To solve this problem, a hybrid testing combining reliability and directed testing as well as a reliability model based on the order statistic （OS） model were presented by Mitchell. An extended research on Mitchell＇s work is proposed. Firstly, the most proper distribution of the fault＇s failure rate which tends to be Iognormal is suggested, and a detailed form of the OS model based on Iognormal and the corresponding parameter estimation method are proposed, respectively. Secondly, an im- plementing framework for the hybrid testing is proposed. Finally, the hybrid testing and the OS model are applied on a real website system. The experimental results indicate： the hybrid testing has more efficient fault detection power and lower testing cost than the reliability testing; compared with three traditional software reliabil ity growth models, the OS model has a best or pretty estimation or prediction power for each data set; and for the failure data set collected from hybrid testing, the OS model also achieves an ac- ceptable estimation result.

The 3,4-dimethoxybenzyl group as solubilizing protective group for the in situ deprotection/deposition of extended aromatic thiolate monolayers

While self-assembled monolayers(SAMs)of aromatic thiolates are frequently used in a wide range of applications,their formation is often hampered by the low solubilities of their precursors.Here we introduce the 3,4-dimethoxybenzyl group as a protective group for the thiol moiety,which increases the solubility and stability of the precursor,but becomes cleaved off during monolayer formation,especially at elevated temperature(60°C)and in presence of protons(trifluoroacetic acid).For a series of substituted terphenylthiols as model systems,it could be demonstrated by using ellipsometry,infrared-reflection absorption spectroscopy,and scanning-tunneling microscopy that the resulting SAMs have the same structure and quality as the ones obtained from the respective unprotected thiols.The protective group has the additional advantage to be stable under Pdcatalyzed C–C bond formation reaction conditions,facilitating the syntheses of the respective precursors.

Aromatic self-assembled monolayers with pentafluoro-λ^(6)-sulfanyl(−SF_(5))termination:Molecular organization and charge transport properties

A series of molecules with oligophenylene backbone,thiolate anchoring group,pentafluoro-λ^(6)-sulfanyl(−SF_(5))tail group was synthesized and used as precursors to form self-assembled monolayers(SAMs)on Au(111)substrates.The resulting SAMs feature dense molecular packing,upright molecular orientation,chemically homogeneous SAM-ambient interface,comprised entirely of the−SF_(5)moieties.These SAMs exhibit exceptional wetting and electrostatic properties,showing advancing water contact angles up to 103°and work function values up to 5.96 eV—probably the highest values reported for any aromatic monolayers on gold.They also feature a comparably low value of the tunnelling decay coefficient(0.38±0.07Å^(−1)),typical of oligophenylene backbone,which is not affected by the introduction of the−SF_(5)group.The latter also hardly affects the current densities at a specific bias compared to analogous monolayers with other electronegative tail groups.The superior electrostatic and good charge transport properties of the designed,SF_(5)-terminated SAMs make them potentially useful for interface engineering in organic electronics and photovoltaics.

Construction sites,particularly in the public sector,are notoriously unpredictable.No matter how well thought out the construction plan,no matter how rigorously calculated the time schedule,the rate of construction or the time point when the building will ultimately welcome its residents remains largely,volatile.The availability of resources,interactions between contractors,and environmental conditions,as well as control mechanisms and restrictions,form a complex"regulatory network"that governs the construction progress largely independent of the architecfs schedule and accounts for a certain"plasticity"along the way.

Redundancy facilitates some of the most remarkable capabilities of humans,and is therefore omni-present in our physiology.The relationship between redundancy in robotics and biology is investigated in detail on the Series Elastic Dual-Motor Actuator(SEDMA),an actuator inspired by the kinematic redundancy exhibited by myofibrils.The actuator consists of two motors coupled to a single spring at the output.Such a system has a redundant degree of freedom,which can be exploited to optimize aspects such as accuracy,impedance,fault-tolerance and energy efficiency.To test its potential for human-like motions,the SEDMA actuator is implemented in a hopping robot.Experiments on a physical demonstrator show that the robot's movement patterns resemble human squat jumps.We conclude that robots with bio-inspired actuator designs facilitate human-like movement,although current technical limitations may prevent them from reaching the same dynamic and energetic performance.

The investigation of NTO/HMX-based plastic-bonded explosives and its safety performance

3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one(NTO)is the main component of insensitive munitions(im)formulation because of its outstanding insensitive properties.In this paper,a series of NTO/HMX-based compositeexplosives were prepared and characterized.The study focuses on the effect of NTO on the perfommance of the formulations,especially the safety performance.The results revealed that the mechanical sensi-tivity of fomulations was associated with NTO content,as well as the thermal conductivity,specific heat capacity and Arrhenius parameters.Then,the high amount of NTO using in formulation was proved to be helpful for NTO/HMX-based formulation to exhibit good thermal safety.Besides,by accelerating rate calorimeter(ARC)and a modified cook-off equipment,the pressure and pressure rise rate were proved as the important indicator for judging the thermal safety performance in confined spaces.Finally,the numerical simulation was used as a credible method for predicting the respond temperature of cook-off experiment.

Can the growing of transgenic maize threaten protected Lepidoptera in Europe?

We evaluated whether protected European butterflies can potentially be at risk if transgenic maize is extensively grown in Central Europe.We explored potential consequences of both insect resistant(IR)and herbicide resistant(HR)transgenic maize.IR maize can produce pollen that is toxic to lepidopteran larvae,and this puts butterfly species at possible risk if the presence of young larvae coincides with maize flowering,during which large quantities of maize pollen can be deposited on vegetation.By considering the timing of maize flowering in Europe and the phenology of the protected Lepidoptera species,we found that 31 species had at least one generation where 50%of the larval stage overlapped with maize flowering,and 69 species for which first instar larvae were present during maize pollen shedding.HR maize allows high concentration herbicide treatments on fields without seasonal limitation,which can drastically reduce weed densities.In cases where such weed species are host plants for protected butterflies,reduced host plant/food availability can result,causing population decreases.By using published information,we first identified the important weed species in major maize-growing European countries.Subsequently,we checked whether the host plants of protected Lepidoptera included species that are common maize weeds.We identified 140 protected species having food plants that are common weeds in one or more of the major European maize-growing countries.If HR maize is grown in Europe,there is a potential hazard that their food plants will seriously decline,causing a subsequent decline of these protected species.
