With the expansion of eucalyptus crops to areas with severe water limitations,physiological studies involving eucalyptus clones to identify those that are tolerant to water stress become *** objective of this study was to assess morphological and physiological responses by eucalyptus clones subjected to drought stress and *** experiment consisted of three eucalyptus clones:VC865,I224 and I144 and two water regimes:control and water stress followed by rehydration,with six *** water potential,gas exchange,maximum quantum efficiency of photo systemⅡand plant height and stem diameter were evaluated under drought stress and ***6 d of rehydration,the number of leaves,leaf area and dry mass of root,leaf,stem and their total were *** clones showed intense reduction of gas exchange during the drought stress period,and only VC865 and 1144 showed rapid recovery with 3 d of *** 1224 showed greater reduction in height,stem diameter,number of leaves,water potential at midday(Ψ_(w)_(Midday)),and maximum quantum efficiency of photosystemⅡ(F_(v)/F_(m)).Clones VC865and T144 showed lower reductions inΨ_(wMidday)and F_(v)/F_(m) under ***865 had lower reductions in leaf number,leaf area and higher leaf dry mass,while clone I144 had higher height and lower reduction in root dry mass *** these clones showed higher water use efficiency with 3d of *** different phenotypic plasticities gave the clones VC865 and 1144 efficient mechanisms of acclimatization to stress and more drought tolerance,enhancing their greater capacity for recovery after stress,which allowed lower dry mass *** 1224,however,was more susceptible to drought stress,undergoing greater physiological damage with only partial recovery during rehydration.

Porphyrins are pigments produced in most animal cells during the synthesis of heme,but their importance for external coloration is ***(Order Strigiformes)are among the few animals that accumulate porphyrins in the integument,where it could serve as a means of *** we hypothesized that the porphyrin content of feathers may depend on body condition and breeding site quality in eurasian eagle owl(Bubo bubo)fledglings and,thus,constitute amplifiers of the quality of the area where they are *** high-performance liquid chromatography,we found 2 porphyrins(protoporphyrin IX and coproporphyrin III)in the body feathers of 19 eagle owl fledglings from 7 breeding *** III,but not protoporphyrin IX feather concentration,was positively associated with the body mass of fledglings and with the quality of the breeding sites where they were reared with respect to food quality and *** coproporphyrin III is produced under oxidative stress,we suggest that good breeding sites may lead to fledglings in good ***,in turn,may make fledglings induce a certain level of free radical and coproporphyrin III production to signal to conspecifics their site-mediated capacity to cope with oxidative *** is the first time that porphyrin content in the integument has been found to be related to individual quality,opening a new scenario for studying evolution of animal coloration.

Soil salinization and non-point source pollution are among the most important and widespread environmental problems in european mediterranean regions. Sweet sorghum （Sorghum bicolor （L.） Moench var. saccharatum） is a moderate to high salinity tolerant crop with low water and nutrient needs, seen as an alternative to grow in the water scarce regions. A three-year multifactorial study was conducted in southern Portugal to evaluate the combined effects of saline water and nitrogen application on the dry biomass （total, stems, and leaves）, sugar content （total reducing sugars and sucrose eontents） and sugar yield （here defined as the product of total reducing sugars and stems dry biomass） functions of sweet sorghum. Sorghum dry biomass and sugar yield showed diminishing returns for each incremental change of nitrogen. The use of saline irrigation waters also led to yield reduction. exception was sucrose content which increased with increasing levels of sodium in the soil. Nitrogen need decreased as the amount of sodium applied increased. Stem dry biomass, sucrose content, and sugar yield progressively increased with progress in the experiment. The effect could be attributed to the increase of the amount of irrigation applied throughout the years, thus increasing the leaching fraction which promoted salt leaching from the root zone, reduced the salinity stress, increased plant transpiration, nitrogen uptake and biomass yield.

Among various physiological responses to salt stress, the synthesis of a lectin-related protein of 14.5 kDa was observed in rice plants （Oryza sativa L.） under the treatment of 170 mmol/L NaCl. In order to better understand the role of the SALT protein in the physiological processes involving salinity, it was irnmunolocalized in mesophilic cells of leaf sheath and blade of a rice variety IAC-4440 following monoclonal antibodies produced by hybridome culture technique. This variety turned out to be an excellent model for that purpose, since it accumulates SALT protein even in absence of salt treatment and it has been classified as moderately sensitive to salinity and a superior grain producer. This feature was relevant for this work since it allowed the use of plants without the deleterious effects caused by salinity. Immunocytochemistry assays revealed that the SALT protein is located in the stroma of chloroplasts under non-stressing condition. Since the chloroplast is the main target affected by salinity and considering that the SALT protein does not present any apparent signal peptide for organelle localization, its lectin-like activity seems to play an important role in the establishment of stable complexes, either to other proteins or to oligosaccharides that are translocated to the chloroplast.

3D city Models as a Visual Support Tool for the Analysis of Buildings Seismic Vulnerability: The Case of Lisbon

3D city models associate a database of a city to a rigorous geospatial representation that is close to the visible reality by combining appearance, geometry, and semantics. As such, these models may include tools that convey attribute analysis, not only at the statistical level but also in terms of visual appearance of the objects, thus allowing the generation of new knowledge about a phenomenon or its effects. Lisbon is a city with a moderate level of seismic risk, and has been hit in the past by strong earthquakes. Several seismic vulnerability studies of buildings have been carried out in Lisbon. These studies generate different scenarios that consider the magnitude and source location of potential earthquakes. The results of these studies were presented as maps obtained from crossing information contained in 2D layers and presented in a GIS environment. In the present study a seismic vulnerability assessment of Lisbon's buildings held in 2D is extended to the third dimension, which refines the resolution and the set of parameters and explores the gains of spatial analysis in 3D representations. The numerous parameters that contribute to assess seismic vulnerability of buildings may be analyzed individually or simultaneously as well as in multiple seismic scenarios. Although covering all residential buildings in Lisbon, the application of the 3Dcity model is demonstrated with more detail in three pilot areas.

Aims Biological invasions are recognized to put native species in risk of *** this study,I tested whether the invasion of Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.(Moraceae;jackfruit)in the Neotropics was explained by its biotic stability,an intrinsic force,or by human occupation,an extrinsic *** I used an ensemble framework combining 12 ecological niche models(eNMs)and 4 atmosphere-ocean general circulation *** were constructed for the pre-industrial time period in the Indo-Malaya biogeographic region,the native habitat of ***,and were then projected to past(last glacial maximum,21000 years ago and mid-Holocene,6000 years ago)and future(end of century,2080)*** eNMs were used to establish the biotic stability of ***-phyllus in areas where it was predicted to be present concomitantly within these four time *** biotic stability was projected onto the Neotropics,and then I used a null model and logistic regression to test what the main driver of *** *** Findings In general,the presence of *** in the Neotropics was not explained by biotic stability,tested by the null ***,human occupation explained much of its presence in the invaded habitat,once all standardized coefficients related to this driver was significant positive in the logistic *** on these results,humans sustained the presence of ***-erophyllus in the Neotropics,probably because of the additive influences of propagule pressure and habitat ***,the recommendation is that the cultivation of *** in the Neotropics must be regulated and supervised,primarily near reserve areas.

Portugal＇s forests in the 12th century were dominated by the Fagaceae represented by Quercus and Castanea, and several pine species From the 12th century onwards, forests underwent changes in their management starting with protection and ultimately leading to intense exploitation. The massive naval construction during the maritime expansion （mainly in the 15th-16th centuries） involved felling of approximately 5 million trees mainly Quercus suber, Pinus pinea and other Quercus species. Cumulative fuel-wood consumption of 959 Mm3 during 1300-1854 was attributed to demographic expansion while the deforestation rate during 1636-1854 accounted for a minimum of 72.6% and a maximum of 96% of total forest cover. The volume of timber used in railway sleepers from 1856 onwards might have reached 0.5 Mm3. The last quarter of the 20th century increased the forest cover of Portugal through the World Bank program of eucalyptus globulus reforestation.
