Uncontrolled hemorrhage and wound infection are crucial causes of trauma-associated death in both the military and the clinic. Therefore, developing an efficient and rapid hemostatic method with biocompatibility, easy degradation, and wound healing is of great importance and desirability. inspired by spontaneous blood cell plug formation in the hemostasis process, an adenosine 5′-diphosphate modified pro-coagulation hyaluronic acid (HA-ADP) coordinated with enhanced antibacterial activity of undecanal-modified chitosan (UCS) was fabricated through physical electrostatic cross-linking and freeze-drying. The as-prepared hydrogel sponges showed a porous structure suitable for blood cell adhesion. in particular, the hydrogel exhibited excellent antibacterial ability and promoted the adhesion of platelets and red blood cells, thus inducing a prominent pro-coagulation ability via platelet activation, which exhibits a shorter hemostasis time (58.94% of control) in vitro. Compared with commercially available CELOX and gelatin sponge (GS), HA-ADP/UCS accelerates hemostasis and reduces blood loss in both rat tail amputation and rat artery injury models. Furthermore, all the samples exhibited su-perior cytocompatibility and biodegradability. Due to these performances, HA-ADP/UCS promoted full-thickness skin defect healing significantly in vivo. All the properties of HA-ADP/UCS suggest that it has great potential for translation as a clinical application material for hemostatic and wound healing.

Headache is common in systemic lupus erythematosus with reported prevalence as high as 70% . The aims of this study were: to estimate the prevalence and types of headache in a sample of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus comparing it with rheumatoid arthritis, to determine clinical and serological associations. Eighty- one systemic lupus erythematosus and 29 rheumatoid arthritis consecutive patients seen in our outpatient clinic were interviewed. Headache was evaluated using the diagnostic criteria proposed by the international Headache Society. Additional evaluations were carried out in the 81 systemic lupus erythematosus patients including depression, disease activity, lupus damage, function disability, quality of life, and severity degree using a validated scales. We analysed the following autoantibodies: anti- double stranded DNA, antinucleosomes, anti- histones, anti- ribosomal P, anti- cardiolipin antibodies, anti- β 2- glycoprotein- i (GPi), and antinuclear antibodies. Forty- one per cent of systemic lupus erythematosus and 17% of rheumatoid arthritis patients suffered from headache (P = 0.02). No significant difference for any primary headache type between the two groups was found. Frequency of headache types in systemic lupus erythematosus patients was: migraine 24% , tensional- type headache 11% , and mixed headache 5% . in systemic lupus erythematosus patients the risk factors associated with headaches were Raynaud’ s phenomenon (OR 3.6; 95% Ci 1.3- 9.5; P = 0.009) and β 2GPi antibody positivity (OR 4.5; 95% Ci 1.2- 16.2; p = 0.016). We conclude that headache is more common in systemic lupus erythematosus than in rheumatoid arthritis patients and was independently associated with Raynaud’ s phenomenon and β 2GP- i antibodies.

Background. We undertook this study in order to determine the pattern and prevalence of childhood psoriasis in northern india and to highlight the differences and similarities with previous studies. Materials and methods. in this retrospective epidemiologic study, the data from 419 children (less than 14 years of age) with psoriasis registered at the Psoriasis clinic between January 1990 and December 2002 were included. Results. The 419 children registered at the Psoriasis clinic constituted 0.3%of the dermatology outpatients and 12.5%of the total psoriasis patients seen over a period of 13 years in the department. There were 219 (52.3%) boys and 200 (47.7%) girls, with a male to female ratio of 1.09:1. The age of onset ranged from 4 days to 14 years. The mean age of onset was 8.1 ±2.1 years in boys and 9.3 ±2.3 years in girls. The peak age of onset in boys was in the 6-10-year age group, whereas the majority of girls showed an onset of psoriasis between the ages of 10 and 14 years. A positive family history was present in only 19 (4.5%) patients. The extensors of the legs were the most common initial site affected [105 (25%) cases], followed by the scalp [87 (20.7%)]. Classical plaque psoriasis was the most frequent clinical presentation [254 (60.6%) patients], followed by plantar psoriasis [54 (12.8%)]. Nail involvement was observed in 130 (31%) cases. All types of nail changes described in psoriasis were seen in these patients. Pitting was the most common nail change, followed by ridging and discoloration. Five children (1.1%) (three girls and two boys) had psoriatic arthropathy. Precipitating factors that brought about the onset of the disease or were associated with exacerbation could be recalled in only 28 (6.6%) patients. Koebnerization was observed in 27.9%of patients. Background: Sodium benzoate (E 211) is widely used to delay yeast spoilage of acidic foods and beverages. Numerous cases of adverse reactions to benzoate hav e been recorded, but most of the studies that have been conducted lacked proper placebo controls or blinding. Objective: The aim of this study is to determine t he incidence of intolerance to sodium benzoate among subjects who experienced re peated episodes of acute urticaria/angio-oedema following the ingestion of a m eal or a product containing this substance. Methods: This was a retrospective st udy based on the analysis of data from patients reported to have experienced epi sodes of urticaria, with or without angio-oedema, after ingesting meals or pro ducts containing sodium benzoate. At the first visit to the outpatients clinic, a careful history was taken. Patients were then given the following diagnostic t ests: tests for igE for common inhalant allergens and food allergens, and a doub le-blind, placebo-controlled challenge with sodium benzoate. Results: A tota l of 47 subjects were enrolled in the study; five (11% ) showed at least one re levant positive reaction to an igE test for food allergy. Only one subject (2% ) had a reaction after the ingestion of 75 mg of sodium benzoate without an adve rse reaction to placebo. Conclusion: This study shows that the percentage of rep eated episodes of acute urticaria/angio-oedema reactions induced by sodium ben zoate is very low (2% ). in view of our results, we suggest that when faced wit h patients who have suffered adverse reactions that could be attributed to sodiu m benzoate, physicians should also carefully evaluate other possible causes.

Background The aim of this research was to explore quality of life （QOL） and acceptance of disability and social support of colostomy patients as well as the relationship between these factors. Methods A descriptive, correlational study was conducted using four scales： the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire （EORTC QLQ-C30） and European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Colorectal Cancer-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire （EORTC QLQ-CR38） scales, the Acceptance of Disability Scale （ADS）, and the Social Relational Quality Scale （SRQS）. A convenience sample of 111 colostomy patients from four hospitals in Guangzhou who underwent colostomy operation at least one month prior to the study and who visited the stoma clinic or association from August 2011 to February 2012 was evaluated for inclusion in the study. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 17.0 software （SPSS inc., Chicago, iL, USA）.

Objective: To measure the effect of competition among fertility centers on pre gnancy and high-order multiple (HOM) gestation rates after iVF. Design: Retrosp ective cohort study. Setting: Four hundred eight fertility clinics registered wi th the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology as providing iVF services in 2000. Competition was defined as number of clinics in a geographically defined area. Demand for services was based on the population of reproductive-aged wome n. Patient(s): Three hundred eighty-one fertility clinics reporting clinical ou tcomes. intervention(s): Pregnancy rates, HOM gestation rates, population of rep roductive-aged women, and number of competing clinics were calculated for each clinic from Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology and census data. Main O utcome Measure(s): The clinic HOM gestation rate (percentage of pregnancies that were HOM) and age-adjusted pregnancy rate. Result(s): The number of clinics in an area of competition ranged from 1 to 22. The HOM gestation rate per clinic r anged from 0%to 50%. As demand increased, competition increased. As competitio n increased, the number of HOM pregnancies per clinic decreased. in areas of low competition (1 to 2 clinics) the clinic HOM gestation rate was 8.43%, in areas of intermediate competition (3-7 clinics) 8.39%, and in areas of high competi tion (8-22 clinics) 8.24%. in areas with intermediate demand, high levels of c ompetition resulted in fewer HOM pregnanc ies than intermediate competition (relative risk 0.56, 95%confidence interval 0 .36-0.89) or low levels of competition (RR 0.57, 95%confidence interval 0.35- 0.94). Age-adjusted pregnancy rates did not differ by level of competition. Con clusion(s): According to these data, the risk of HOM gestation decreases with in creasing competition among clinics; however, pregnancy rates are unaffected.
