AIM：Toinvestigate the effects of vitamin E succinate(VES)on the expression of c-jun gene and protein in human gastric cancer SGC-7901 ***:After SGC-7901cells were treated with VESat different doses(5,10,20mg·L^-1)at different time,reverse transcription-PCR technique was used to detect the level of c-jun mRNA;Western Blot was applied to measure the expression of c-jun ***:After the cells were theated with VESat 20mg·L^-1for 3h,the expression rapidly reached its maximun that was3.5times of UT control(P<0.01).The level of c-jun mRNA was also increased following treatment of VESfor *** the expression after treatment of VES at 5mg·L^-1for24h was 1.6tmes compared with UTcontrol(P<0.01),Western blot analysis showed that the level of c-jun protein was obviusly elevated in VES-treated SGC-7901cells at 20mg·L^-1for3h,The expression of c-jun protein was gradually increased after treatment of VES at 20mg·L^-1for3,6,12and24h,respectively,with an evident time-effect ***:The levels of c-jun mRNA and protein in VES-treated SGC-7901cells were increased in a dose-and time-dependent manner;the expression of c-jun was prolonged by VES,indicating that c-jun is involvedin VES-induced apoptosis in SGC-7901 cells.

OBJECTIVE： Previous reports have demonstrated that X-ray repair cross-complementing gene 1 （XRCCl） Arg399GIn polymorphism is a possible risk factor for several cancers. Published data on the association of XRCCl Arg399GIn polymorphism with glioma susceptibility have generated conflicting results. This study is designed to precisely estimate the relationship. DATA RETRIEVAL： A computer-based online retrieval of Medline, EMBASE, OVID, Sciencedirect, and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure was performed to search papers regarding association of XRCC1 Arg399GIn polymorphisms with glioma published up to April 2012. SELECTION CRITERIA： Two investigators selected data independently. Meta analysis was then performed for the selected studies using STATA 11.0 software after strict selection. Heterogeneity test, sensitivity analysis and publication bias assessments were then conducted. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Association of XRCCl Arg399GIn polymorphism with glioma risk. RESULTS： A total of nine case-controlled studies comprising 2 326 cases and 3 610 controls were selected for final analysis. The overall data failed to indicate a significant association of XRCCl Arg399GIn polymorphism with glioma risk （Gin/Gin vs. Arg/Arg： odds ratio （OR） = 1.11; 95% confidence interval （Cl） = 0.94-1.31; dominant model： OR = 1.06; 95%C/= 0.95-1.18; recessive model： OR = 1.04; 95%C/= 0.81-1.34）. However, subgroup analysis regarding ethnicity showed an increased risk among Asians （Gin/Gin vs. Arg/Arg OR = 1.40; 95%C/= 1.10-1.78; recessive model： Caucasians or mixed ethnicities. OR = 1.70; 95%Cl = 1.17-2.46; dominant mode OR = 1.46; 95%C/= 1.04-2.05） but not CONCLUSION： XRCCl Arg399GIn polymorphism might modify the susceptibility to glioma among Asians but not Caucasians. Further large and well-designed studies are needed to confirm this conclusion.

A study on iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) in adolescence was conducted among 478 teen-age students in Shanghai. The study indicated that the intake of nutrients among the students was generally insufficient. The lack of protein, calcium, Vitamin A, Vitamin B_1, and Vitamin B_2 was more serious. The morbidities of IDA among male and female students were 15.8 and 32.6%, respectively, higher in the female group (P<0.01). The iron-deficiency sufferers among male and female students were 46.8 and 61.8%, respectively, also higher in the female group (P<0.01). The causes of IDA were analyzed by the method of stepwise regression. In a study of the effect of IDA on intelligence and physical development in adolescents, we found that there was no significant effect of IDA on intelligence quotient (IQ) and school performance. However, the speed and endurance capabilities of students of both sexes were correlated directly with hemoglobin level. In female students, the speed capability was correlated directly with the serum ferritin content. On the basis of these findings, a special 3-month school lunch program was initiated. The results indicate that a comprehensive, rational, and balanced diet is beneficial to hemoglobin, free erythrocyte porphyrin, and serum ferritin contents and improves adolescent development. 1990 Academic Press. Optimal dose of zinc supplementation for preventing aluminum-induced neurotoxicity in rats

Zinc supplementation can help maintain learning and memory function in rodents. In this study, we hypothesized that zinc supplementation could antagonize the neurotoxicity induced by aluminum in rats. Animals were fed a diet containing different doses of zinc （50, 100, 200 mg/kg） for 9 weeks, and orally administered aluminum chloride （300 mg/kg daily） from the third week for 7 consecutive weeks. Open-field behavioral test results showed that the number of rearings in the group given the 100 mg/kg zinc supplement was significantly increased compared with the group given the 50 mg/kg zinc supplement. Malondialdehyde content in the cerebrum was significantly decreased, while dopamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine levels were increased in the groups given the diet sup- plemented with 100 and 200 mg/kg zinc, compared with the group given the diet supplemented with 50 mg/kg zinc. The acetylcholinesterase activity in the cerebrum was significantly decreased in the group given the 100 mg/kg zinc supplement. Hematoxylin-eosin staining revealed evident patho- logical damage in the hippocampus of rats in the group given the diet supplemented with 50 mg/kg zinc, but the damage was attenuated in the groups given the diet supplemented with 100 and 200 mg/kg zinc. Our findings suggest that zinc is a potential neuroprotective agent against alumi-num-induced neurotoxicity in rats, and the optimal dosages are 100 and 200 mg/kg.

Poly(glycolic acid)(PGA)is derived from glycolide obtained by fermenting pineapples or sugarcane,which has excellent gas barrier properties and a small carbon *** is a potential substitute for the current aluminum-plastic composite films used in high barrier packaging ***,its poor ductility and narrow processing window limit its application in food ***,poly(butylene succinate-co-butylene adipate)(PBSA)was used to fabricate PGA/PBSA blend films through an in situ fibrillation technique and blown film *** the elongational flow field used during the extrusion process,a unique hierarchical structure based on the PBSA nanofibrils and interfacially oriented PGA crystals was *** structure enhances the strength,ductility and gas barrier properties of the PGA/PBSA blend *** addition,an epoxy chain extender(ADR4468)was used as a compatibilizer to further enhance the interfacial adhesion between PGA and PBSA.70PGA/0.7ADR exhibited a very low oxygen permeability(2.34×10^(-4)Barrer)with significantly high elongating at break(604.4%),tensile strength(47.4 MPa),and transparency,which were superior to those of petroleum-based ***,the 70PGA/0.7ADR blown films could satisfy the requirements for most instant foods such as coffee,peanuts,and fresh meat.

Objective: To investigate the environmental influences on the bacteriological quality of red and chicken meats on ***: The environmental health status was determined by reliable and valid researcher-made *** 264 samples were gathered in two phases(at the entrance and three months later) and examined for total bacteria count, Escherichia coli,Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella ***: The result revealed that the mean of total bacteria count, *** and *** densities had significant differences in two steps on chicken and the red meat samples(P hygiene had significant effects on total bacteria count and *** densities in chicken samples(P hygiene).Regular control, improving of sanitary health, and staff training are necessary for elimination of bacterial contamination.

AIM: To identify the role of anti-pancreatic antibody (PAB) in the diagnosis of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) among Turkish patients, and its frequency in firstdegree ***: PAB and anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae (ASCA) were examined in serum samples of 214 subjects including patients with Crohn's disease (CD, n = 64), ulcerative colitis (UC, n = 63), first-degree relatives of patients with CD (n = 25), first-degree relatives of patients with UC (n = 28),and a control group with gastrointestinal symptoms other than (IBD) (n = 34) by indirect immunofluorescence Positivity of PAB and ASCA was compared in terms of Vienna classification, disease activity and medications ***: In terms of PAB positivity, no difference was found between patients with CD (14.1%) and UC (7.9%) however, significant difference was observed between patients with CD and subjects in the control group (P 150 (P < 0.05).CONCLUSION: PAB is valuable in the diagnosis of IBD rather than CD, but cannot be used alone for diagnostic purposes. PAB is not superior to ASCA in CD diagnosis and in detecting CD among relatives of patients with CD.

Effect of Excessive Iodine on Immune Function of Lymphocytes and Intervention with Selenium

In order to study the effect of excessive iodine on immune function of lymphocytes and the role of selenium supplementation with excessive iodine intake, the changes of T lymphocyte number, ratio of subsets, activity of natural killer （NK） cells and lymphocytes proliferation response were investigated. 150 female BALB/C mice were randomly divided into 5 groups in terms of their body weight （n=30 in each group）, and 10 of each group were taken as one batch for test. Mice in the 5 groups were orally administrated with iodine 0 （group Ⅰ ）, 1500 （group Ⅱ）, 3000 （group Ⅲ）, 6000 μg/L （group ）, iodine 6000 μg/L plus selenium 0.3 mg/L （group Ⅴ） respectively for 30 days. Lymphocyte proliferation response, CD4^＋/CD8^＋, Th1/Th2 and the activity of NK cells were measured. CD4^＋/CD8^＋ was significantly lower, while lymphocyte proliferation response stronger, and Th1/Th2 and the activity of NK cells significantly higher in group Ⅳ than in group Ⅰ （P〈0.01）. There was no significant difference in all indexes between group Ⅴ and group Ⅰ （P〉0.05）. It was suggested that excessive iodine as exogenous chemical materials can induce disorders of T lymphocyte immune function in mice. 0.3 mg/L selenium supplementation can protect mice against toxicity induced by 6000 μg/L iodine.

Traditionally,urbanization has been seen as a negative phenomenon for ***,changes in the environmental parameters induced by urbanization might be favorable for some *** the past half-century,the common hamster has actively populated cities,establishing populations in some European,Russian and Kazakhstan *** on integrative methods,we investigated free-range common hamsters inhabiting Simferopol from 2015 to 2018 to reveal possible adaptations to the urbanized environment across several parameters,including lifespan,hibernation period,reproductive activity and body *** show that in urban areas,the common hamster demonstrates an extremely short hibernation period compared to other localities,possibly due to enhanced food resources from urban forestry(walnuts,locus and hazelnut),allowing the species to start breeding very early(February)and finish as late as *** present the first evidence of polyandry for this species:mating of receptive females with several males and subsequent confirmation of multiple *** high reproductive potential,the lifespan of the common hamster in urban conditions is generally very short(less than 1 year).We speculate that in the process of synurbization,the common hamster’s innate plasticity across many life history traits permits it to successfully colonize throughout a wide range of habitats,with the ability to form novel adaptations to urban environments.
