Comparative study of the nutritional composition and toxic elements of farmed and wild Chanodichthys mongolicus

Information of the difference in quality between farmed and wild fish is central to better ensuring fish products produced in aquaculture meet regulatory and consumer requirements. Proximate composition, amino acid and fatty acid profiles, and toxic elements contents of fanned and wild Chanodichthys mongolicus were established and compared. Significantly higher crude protein content while lower moisture content in farmed fish compared to wild fish were observed （P〈0.05）. The percentages of total amino acids （TAA）, total essential amino acids （TEAA）, total non-essential amino acids （TNEAA） and total delicious amino acids （TDAA） in farmed fish were all significantly higher than those in the wild equivalent （P〈0.05）. Compared to the FAO/WHO recommended reference values, the ratios of TEAA/ TAA （39.84%o-40.33%） were comparable to 40% and TEAA / TNEAA （66.22%-67.60%） were above 60%. Fatty acid profiles in both farmed and wild C. mongolicus were dominated by monounsaturated fatty acid （MUFA）, with farmed fish contained much more MUFA content compared to wild counterpart （P〈0.05）. Notably, wild fish exhibited significantly higher levels of total polyunsaturated fatty acid （PUFA） including eicosapentaenoic acid （EPA） and docosahexaenoic acid （DHA） than fanned fish （P〈0.05）. The EPA （C20：503） and linoleic acid （C18：206） were the predominant PUFA in wild and farmed C. mongolicus, respectively. Moreover, farmed fish displayed an overall lower toxic element levels （As, Cd, Pb and Hg） in comparison with wild fish, and both were far lower than the established limit standard. In conclusion, our results suggest that the nutritional quality of fanned C. mongolicus was inferior to their wild counterpart with respect to fatty acids nutrition, and therefore further studies should focus on the improving C. mongolicus diet in order to enhance the overall nutritional composition.

Dietary sanguinarine supplementation recovers the decrease in muscle quality and nutrient composition induced by high-fat diets of grass carp(Ctenopharyngodon idella)

The intake of high-fat diets(HFD) has been shown to diminish the muscle quality of aquatic ***, as an excellent additive, exhibits the capability to reduce fat deposition and alleviate inflammation. However, its role in the muscle quality reduction caused by HFD remains unclear. An eight-week trial was conducted to investigate the impacts of dietary supplementation of sanguinarine at1200 μg/kg(HFDS; crude fat = 10%) on the muscle quality of grass carp(Ctenopharyngodon idellus) in comparison to a basic diet(CON, crude fat = 5%). Each group had 3 replicates, with 40 fish per *** experiment employed one-way ANOVA and Duncan's multiple comparisons of the means. The results showed that the HFD exhibited lower growth performance, reduced protein deposition, myofiber diameter, and muscle hardness, coupled with higher levels of fat deposition and inflammation when compared with the CON. However, HFDS improved growth performance(P < 0.05), fat metabolism(ppara( P = 0.001), lpl(P < 0.001), atgl(P < 0.001), and cpt1(P = 0.001) expression exhibited a significant elevation), protein deposition(the protein and m RNA levels of AKT(P = 0.004), PI3K(P = 0.027),TOR(P = 0.005), and P70S6K(P = 0.007) demonstrated a marked increase), myofiber diameter, muscle hardness, and the total content of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid. Furthermore, the HFDS reduced oxidative damage caused by fat deposition by significantly downregulating nf-κb(P <0.001), il-1β(P < 0.001), il-6(P < 0.001), il-8(P = 0.003), and tnf-a(P < 0.001) expression and markedly upregulated nrf2(P < 0.001), gpx4(P < 0.001), cat(P < 0.001), sod(P < 0.001), and gr(P = 0.003)expression. The findings from this study suggest that sanguinarine has the potential to alleviate the adverse effects of HFD on growth and muscle quality, providing a theoretical foundation for its practical implementation.

Reproductive biology of Schizopygopsis younghusbandi Regan 1905(Cyprinidae:Schizothoracinae)in the middle reaches of Yarlung Tsangpo River,China

The reproductive biology of Schizopygopsis younghusbandi(Cyprinidae: Schizothoracinae) was studied by 719 individuals that collected from August 2008 to August 2009 in the middle reaches of Yarlung Tsangpo River, China. We coupled monthly variations of the gonadosomatic index(GSI), monthly proportions of the macroscopic maturity stages with size distribution of oocytes to evaluate spawning seasons. Taken as a set, these results indicated that S. younghusband i spawned from March to April with high degree of the spawning synchronicity. The standard lengths and the ages at 50% maturity for male were 222 mm and 4.4 year, and 308 mm and 7.0 year for female. In addition, the estimated mean fecundity and mean relative fecundity were 18682 and 57.8 eggs per g body weight. The fecundity of S. younghusbandi increased linearly with increasing of standard length and body weight. This study provides details about the S. younghusbandi reproduction suggesting that may be this species is vulnerable to exploitation in the middle reaches of Yarlung Tsangpo River.

Macrobenthos monitoring in the Gulf of Suez,Egypt

The biogeography of macrobenthic communities with large-scale differences in species distribution and abundance was studied along the eastern and western coastal regions of the Gulf of Suez to indicate biodiversity of benthos in relation to the prevailing environmental conditions. In general, benthos have a wide variety of species of mainly polychaet worms, crustaceans, bivalves, and other bottom invertebrates living in burrows in/or on the sediment surface. Coastal development clearly affects the ecosystem after the construction of coastal projects. The highest values of benthic diversity, evenness, richness and dominance are found at the Gulf of Suez （WG 1, WG 3）, Ras Gharib （WG 7, WG 8） and Ras Shukier （WG 9a） by contrast to others. The abundance of macrobenthic organsims along the coasts of Gulf of Suez can be arranged in the following sequence： other groups （34%） greater than crustaceans （25%） greater than polychaetes （22%） greater than molluscs （17%） greater than echinoderms （2%）. The biomass of benthic assemblages at different sampling sites can also be ranked as follows： echinoderms （52%） greater than molluscs （27%） greater than crustaceans （16%） greater than polychaetes （2%） greater than other groups （3%）. Some benthic groups or species indicated a distinctive correlation to pollution sources in the marine ecosystem which obviously increased in the coastal areas due to the extension of the coastal development. These activities needed regular information to establish database for the biology and distribution of marine benthic communities. The density and diversity of benthos are significantly affected by eutrophication at Ain Sukhna, whereas the benthos in the open Gulf of Suez do not seem to be adversely affected by pollution.

Medusa consumption and prey selection of silver pomfret Pampus argenteus juveniles

The current study explored Aurelia aurita and Rhopilema esculent um consumption by silver pomfret juveniles, as well as their prey selection between the two jellyfi sh species. Silver pomfret juveniles weighing 1±0.1 g actively preyed on both the species. Their daily A. aurita consumption was 11.6 times their own body weights regardless of the size of A. aurita medusae. Their daily R. esculent um consumption was 13, 9.1, 5, and 4.1 times their own body weights when the R. esculentum medusae were 10, 20, 30, and 40 mm in bell diameter, respectively. The survival rates of the R. esculent um were higher than those of the A. aurita. When the R. esculent um medusae were more than 30 mm in bell diameter, their survival rate exceeded 92%. Silver pomfrets serve as a type of potential predators on A. aurita in coastal waters, and they have little infl uence on R. esculent um with a size exceeding 30 mm. Besides, A. aurita may be able to be used as fi sh prey in silver pomfret artifi cial breeding.

Seasonal changes in the demersal nekton community off the Changjiang River estuary

The diversity,community structure and seasonal variation in demersal nekton off the Changjiang(Yangtze)River estuary was evaluated using monthly trawl survey data,collected between December 2008 and November 2009.A total of 95 species(56 teleosts,11 cephalopods,and 28 decapod crustaceans)from 69 genera,49 families and 15 orders were *** species could be classifi ed into six groups on the basis of temporal distribution *** resident crab Ovalipes punctatus dominated the community,both in number and biomass.A clear seasonal succession was observed in the species *** analysis revealed three primary seasonal groups corresponding to the samples collected in winter-spring,late spring-summer and late *** highest biomass and lowest diversity were observed in summer,while the lowest biomass and highest diversity in *** abundance-biomass comparison curves and community composition suggested that the investigated community was moderately *** results suggest that reduction in fi shing pressure and in the degree of seasonal hypoxia are essential for sustainable resource management off the Changjiang River estuary.

The ultrastructure of the spermatozoon of Octopus ocellatus Gray, 1849 (Cephalopoda: Octopoda)

Morphology of the spermatozoon of Octopus ocellatus was studied by light, scanning electron, and transmission electron microscopes. Sperm are 600-700 um long, with a large number of granules in diameter about 130 um. Each spermatozoon is composed of a head, neck, and tail. The head is made up of an acrosomal complex anterior to the nucleus. The spiral acrosomal complex consists of an electron-lucent vesicle, lacuna, and an electron-dense acrosomal vesicle. Additionally, the spiral acrosomal vesicle has numerous equidistant striations, and is surrounded by many small granules （20 nm diameter）. A long straight nucleus, which is electron-densed, has a deep posterior concavity, the nuclear vacuole. At the terminal end of the nucleus is a sleeve-like structure with a concave posterior nuclear fossa （PNF）. The neck is short connecting the PNF. The basal body is located in the PNF and gives rise to the axoneme. This structure connects the head, neck, and tail. The tail is divided into a middle piece and a principal piece. The middle piece, having a 9＋9＋2 arrangement, is surrounded by a mitochondrial sheath and terminates by an electron-dense fibrous sheath. The principal piece is the longest part of the sperm with coarse fibers tapering posteriorly. The results of this study shall provide some useful information for artificial breeding of this species.

Genetic identification of two species of Pleuronichthys by DNA barcoding

DNA barcoding is a new method for biological taxonomy, offering the ability to identify species from fragments in any life-history stage. Pleuronichthys cornutus and P. japonicus are two morphologically similar species. Pleuronichthys japonicus has never been found previously in China. However, in this study, we identified both species using DNA barcoding （cytochrome c oxidase subunit I （COI））, the mtDNA control region and cytochrome b. The results reveal that： l） intraspecific variation in the DNA barcode is much less than interspecific variation; 2） the two morphologically similar species were placed into separate clades distinguishable by high bootstrap values; 3） COI barcodes are more powerful for identifying the two species than the other two mtDNA fragments.

Seasonal distribution of Calanus sinicus (Copepoda,Crustacea) in the East China Sea

On the basis of the four-season investigation in 23°30′ ~ 33°N and 118°30′ ~ 128°E of the East China Sea from 1997 to 2000, the seasonal distribution of Calanus sinicus was studied with aggregation intensity, regression contribution and other statistical methods. It was inferred that C. sinicus＇ s predominance presented from winter to summer, especially in spring and summer, because its dominance amounted to 0.62 and 0.29 respectively. The percent of its abundance in copepod abundance was 76.71% in summer, greater than 66.60% in spring, greater than 19.02% in winter, greater than 4.02% in autumn. The occurrence frequency in winter and spring was 83.08% and 93.89% , higher than that in summer and autumn, 76.71% and 73.87%. Compared with other dominant species of copepods, C. sinicus＇ s contribution to the copepod abundance was obviously greater than that of the other species in winter, summer and spring, but smaller in autumn. C. sinicus tended to have an aggregated distribution. The clumping index peaked in summer （50.19） , followed in spring （19.60） , declined in autumn （13.18） and was the lowest in winter （3.04）. The abundance changed in different seasons and areas, relating to temperature but not salinity in spring and autumn, to salinity but not temperature in summer; to neither temperature nor salinity in winter. In spring and summer, its high abundance area was often located in the mixed water mass formed by the Taiwan Warm Current, the Huanghai Sea Cold Water Mass, the coastal water masses and the Changjiang Dilute Water. In spring and autumn, its abundance was affected by the warm current, as well as the runoff from continental rivers affected it in summer. It can be inferred that C. sinicus was adapted to wide salinity and temperature, as a euryhalinous and eurythermous species in the East China Sea.

Effects of Lanthanum on Egg Hatching and Nauplius Metamorphosis of Penaeus Chinensis

Effects of lanthanum on egg hatching and nauplius metamorphosis of Penaeus chinensis(P. chinensis) were studied. The experimental results showed that the optimum concentration of lanthanum was 0 30～1 80 mg/L for monocell and dicell stage of embryo development, the egg hatching rates were raised by 33 5%～49 1%; and it was 0 90～1 80 mg/L for poly cell stage, the egg hatching rate was raised by 17 1%～23 5%. The optimum concentration was 0 90～1 50 mg/L for nauplius metamorphosis, the metamorphosis rate from nauplius(N 1) to protozoea(Z 1) was raised by 9 4%～11 7%. The promotion of lanthanum to egg embryo development was completed through absorption of lanthanum by egg in the water. The absorption capacity of one egg for lanthanum was 5 89 μg.
