Peatlands are some of the largest carbon reservoirs in terrestrial ecosystems and play a key role in the global carbon *** peatland development,carbon accumulation processes,and the peatland response to varying forcing factors over different temporal and spatial scales helps reveal the underlying processes and general patterns of these *** assess the role of climate and local conditions in peatland development,the basal samples from 23 peat cores and three well dated long peat cores were used to explore peatland initiation,lateral expansion,and carbon accumulation rate in the Baijianghe peatland located in the Changbai Mountains,Northeast *** results reveal that the Baijianghe peatland was initiated from forest conditions at 7.9 *** BP and then expanded laterally by *** rapid expansion between 5 and4 *** BP likely resulted from high precipitation and gentle *** mean carbon accumulation rates of the three long peat cores were 36.3,39.1 and 48.4 g C m^(-2)yr^(-1),respectively,which are higher than rates from the northern *** climate and local conditions have exerted an important influence on carbon accumulation rates in the Baijianghe peatland since the middle *** carbon accumulation patterns between 5 and 1.5 *** BP were probably linked to local conditions rather than climatic settings,including topography,hydrological conditions,and plant *** consistently decreasing carbon accumulation rate values at all locations within the BJH peatland over the last 1.5 *** BP suggests that climate is the primary *** study highlights the varying primary controls on the process of peatland development and reveals the important role of local conditions in carbon accumulation.

This research investigates the ecological importance,changes,and status of mangrove wetlands along China’s *** interpretation,geological surveys,and ISO clustering unsupervised classification methods are employed to interpret mangrove distribution from remote sensing images from 2021,utilizing ArcGIS software ***,the carbon storage capacity of mangrove wetlands is quantified using the carbon storage module of InVEST *** show that the mangrove wetlands in China covered an area of 278.85 km2 in 2021,predominantly distributed in Hainan,Guangxi,Guangdong,Fujian,Zhejiang,Taiwan,Hong Kong,and *** total carbon storage is assessed at 2.11×10^(6) t,with specific regional data *** since the 1950s reveal periods of increase,decrease,sharp decrease,and slight-steady increases in mangrove areas in *** important finding is the predominant replacement of natural coastlines adjacent to mangrove wetlands by artificial ones,highlighting the need for creating suitable spaces for mangrove *** study is poised to guide future mangroverelated investigations and conservation strategies.

Understanding water dynamics is a prerequisite for the restoration of degraded ecosystems in arid and semiarid *** this study,we carried out δD and δ^(18)O analyses of precipitation,unsaturated soil water,overland flow,surface runoff,and groundwater samples from a seasonally flooded wetland in the Momoge National Nature Reserve of the Songnen Plain,Northeast China,to identify the water sources and understand the mechanisms of unsaturated soil water *** soil water content(W/W%)at every 20 cm along with a soil profile(0–100 cm)was collected during the growing season,and the HYDRUS-1D model was used to simulate temporal-spatial *** results showed that the local meteoric water line(δD=5.90δ18O-7.34,R2=0.95)had a smaller slope and intercept than the global meteoric water line because of strong evaporation at our study site under semi-arid *** groundwater was partly recharged by local precipitation via overland flow and unsaturated soil water *** soil water was sourced from both precipitation and groundwater with variations at different *** upper soil layer at 0–15 cm was mainly sourced from limited precipitation,while the groundwater could move up to a 25 cm layer during the dry *** unsaturated soil water content increased with soil depth in the top 40 cm,decreased at depths of 40 to 80 cm,and increased again at depths of 80 to 100 *** HYDRUS-1D model could simulate the unsaturated soil water dynamics well in the upper(0–40 cm)and lower(80–100 cm)sections,but poorly for depths of 40–80 cm due to the upward and downward *** bidirectional unsaturated soil water movement highlights the importance of capillary groundwater for wetland plants with similar climatic or hydrogeological conditions.

Profiling the antibiotic resistome in soils between pristine and human-affected sites on the Tibetan Plateau

With increasing pressure from anthropogenic activity in pristine environments,the comprehensive profiling of antibiotic resistance genes(ARGs)is essential to evaluate the potential risks from human-induced antibiotic resistance in these under-studied ***,we characterized the microbial resistome in relatively pristine soil samples collected from four distinct habitats on the Tibetan Plateau,using a Smart chip based high-throughput q PCR *** compared these to soils from the same habitats that had been subjected to various anthropogenic activities,including residential sewage discharge,animal farming,atmospheric deposition,and tourism *** to pristine samples,an average of23.7%more ARGs were detected in the human-affected soils,and the ARGs enriched in these soils mainly encoded resistances to aminoglycoside and *** the four habitats studied,soils subjected to animal farming showed the highest risks of ARG enrichment and *** shown,the number of ARGs enriched(a total of 42),their fold changes(17.6 fold on average),and the co-occurrence complexity between ARGs and mobile genetic elements were all the highest in fecal-polluted *** well as antibiotics themselves,heavy metals also influenced ARG distributional patterns in Tibetan ***,compared to urban areas,the Tibetan Plateau had a low potential for ARG selection and exhibited low carriage of ARGs by mobile genetic elements,even in environments impacted by humans,suggesting that these ARGs have a limited capacity to *** present study examined the effects of multiple anthropogenic activities on the soil resistomes in relatively pristine environments.

Northern peatlands represent one of the largest biospheric carbon reservoirs in the *** southern margins act as new carbon reservoirs,which can greatly influence the global carbon ***,the Holocene initiation,expansion and climate sensitivity of these peatlands remain intensely *** we used a compilation of basal peat ages across six isolated peatlands at the southern margins of northern peatlands to address these *** found that the earliest initiation event of these peatlands occurred after the Younger Dryas(YD,12,800–11,700 years ago)*** second initiation event and rapid expansion occurred since 5 ka *** recession of East Asian summer monsoon(EASM)during the YD period and at around 5 ka *** likely played a major role in controlling the initiation and expansion of these *** rapid expansion of these peatlands possibly contributed to the significant increases in atmospheric methane concentrations during the late Holocene because of the minerotrophic fens status and rapid expansion of *** ecological processes are different from northern peatlands,indicating the special carbon sink and source implications of these peatlands in the global carbon cycle.

Biogeotextiles can be used to facilitate the formation of vegetation cover and to reduce soil *** have demonstrated that only biogeotextile or vegetation cover can greatly reduce soil ***, information about the effects of the combination of biogeotextile and vegetation cover on soil erosion is still limited, despite that the combination is the commonly practical form for bare road slope protection. Experimental plots, consisting of a relatively loose surface layer and a compacted sublayer,were constructed using movable soil-bin trolleys(200 × 100 × 40 cm3) filled with silt loam sieved through 1-cm screen. The plots were seeded with a seed mixture of tall fescue(Festuca elata Keng ex ***) and alfalfa(Medicago sativa L.) as a grass-legume regime. Then the plots were covered with three types of biogeotextile, i.e., coir blanket(CB), mixed coir-straw blanket(MB), and straw blanket(SB).A bare slope(BS) was constructed as the control experiment. Irrigation was applied to ensure vegetation germination and growth. Plant characteristics were measured after every 20 days. laboratory simulated rainfall of 71 mm/h intensity was applied to each plot for 60 min after 20, 40, and 60 days. Surface runoff and sediment were collected every 5 min during rainfall. The results showed that the MB and SB promoted increased total emergence density of plants by 47% and 23%, respectively, compared to case of vegetation growth without biogeotextiles. The dense structure of the CB impeded the emergence of alfalfa, leading to 9% lower total emergence density. Compared with bare slope(0 day BS), biogeotextiles increased runoff by 3%(MB)-19%(CB) and reduced erosion by 96%(MB and SB)-98%(CB). After 60 days,vegetation cover reduced runoff by 54% and reduced erosion by 81% compared with the BS case. The combination of biogeotextile and vegetation cover reduced runoff by 44%(CB)-62%(SB) and reduced erosion by no less than 99% compared to the BS case. Compared with biogeo
