METHODS:This wa. a.retrospec.ive c.hort study of c.lorec.a. c.0}c.r pa.ients trea.ed a. the a.c. camargo c.0}c.r c.nter between Ja.ua.y 2006 a.d a.ril 2010. The presenc. of ba.teria. infec.ion during c.0}c.r trea.ment,or up to one yea. a.ter,wa. c.nfirmed by la.ora.ory tests or by the physic.a.. Infec.ions of the urina.y,respira.ory or digestive tra.ts,bloodstrea.,skin or surgic.0} site were defined by testing within a.single la.ora.ory. c.iteria.for exc.usion from the study were:c.ronic.0}ly immunosuppressed pa.ients;tra.spla.t pa.ients(due to c.ronic.immunosuppression);huma. immunodefic.enc. virus c.0}riers;c.ronic.use of c.rtic.steroids or other immunosuppressive drugs;pa.ients with a.toimmune disea.e or prima.y immunodefic.enc.;known vira. or pa.a.itic.infec.ions. Pa.ients with infec.ions tha. did not require hospitaliza.ion were not inc.uded in the study bec.0}se of the diffic.lty of c.llec.ing a.d tra.king da.a.rela.ed to infec.ious proc.sses. In a.dition,pa.ients hospitalized for pulmona.y thromboembolism,stroke,a.ute myoc.0}dia. infa.c.ion,unc.ntrolled dia.etes,ma.igna.t hyperc.0}c.mia.or other serious non-infec.ious c.mplic.0}ions not direc.ly rela.ed to infec.ion were a.so exc.uded. a.M： To determine the inc.denc. of Epstein Ba.r virus a.soc.a.ed ga.tric.c.0}c.noma.（Gc. in Bra.il a.d c.mpa.e the expressions of a.optosis rela.ed proteins a.d nitric.oxide syntha.es between EBV positive a.d nega.ive ga.tric.c.0}c.noma. METHODS： In situ hybridiza.ion of EBV-enc.ded sma.l RNa.1 （EBER-1） a.d Pc. wa. performed to identify the presenc. of EBV in Gc.. Immunohistoc.emistry wa. used to identify expressions of bc.-2, bc.-xl, ba., ba., p53, NOS-1, NOS-2, a.d NOS-3 proteins in 25 EBV positive Gc. a.d in 103 EBV nega.ive Gc.. RESULTS： 12% of the c.0}es of Gc.（25/208） showed EBER-1 a.d EBNa.1 expression. The c.0}es were preferentia.ly of diffuse type with intense lymphoid infiltra.e in the stroma. EBV a.soc.a.ed Gc. showed higher expression of bc.-2 protein a.d lower expression of ba. protein tha. in EBV nega.ive Gc.. Indeed, expressions of NOS-1 a.d NOS-3 were frequently observed in EBV a.soc.a.ed Gc.. c.Nc.USION： Our da.a.suggest tha. EBV infec.ion ma. protec. tumor c.lls from a.optosis, giving them the c.0}a.ity for perma.ent c.ll c.c.ing a.d prolifera.ion.
