Do people really support conservation?Evidence from China and the United States

Survey studies have consistently shown strong public support for biodiversity conservation,even though conservation regulations often face strong local resistance when they are *** seemingly contradictory phenomenon is due to the fact that previous polls have sought opinion only in the abstract,yet many conservation measures are implemented at the expense of local economic development,and policymakers often face a‘Conservation-development Tradeoff’-a policy dilemma that remains understudied by social *** fill this gap,this study conducts one of the first comparative surveys on public support for biodiversity conservation in China and the United States.I measure public support for conservation using two separate question versions ***‘regular version’asks directly about individual support for biodiversity conservation,and the“tradeoff version”asks the same question but in the context of the policy *** results show that both American and Chinese citizens are highly supportive of conservation in the *** after they learn about the tradeoff effect,the aggregate support falls sharply,and the Chinese citizens show significantly less support compared to their American *** survey findings expanded on existing academic research on public attitudes toward conservation policies and can encourage future conservation policymakers to understand the significance of the tradeoff issue,as conventional wisdom may have overestimated public support for biodiversity ***,as China has become a crucial player in global conservation governance,understanding the Chinese public sentiment on the real-world policy dilemma can have important implications for conservation policymaking in the world.

We examine the impact of China s higher education expansion on labor market outcomes for young college graduates using China s 20051 Percent Population Sample *** variations in the expansion of university places across provinces and high school cohorts between 1999 and 2003,we apply a difference-in-differences model and take into account the demand-side effect by using the Bartik *** find that the expansion of higher education in China decreased unemployment rates among males and college graduates in the short ***,the policy decreased women s labor force participation and individual earnings in high-skilled white-collar *** further discuss potential channels affecting the outcomes that were *** results illustrate the broad economic benefits of higher *** findings shed new light on the contribution of young skilled labor in the economic growth of China and call for policies that can alleviate the short-term negative impact of higher education on individual students and maximize human *** study also provides an interesting example of the consequences of the unequal expansion of higher education opportunities on the labor market of an emerging economy.

The foundation of the People’s Republic of China in1949 marked the realization of a dream strived for by millions of Chinese people over the preceding hundred years,i.e.,the dream of *** 1949,China has gone through two stages of historical development,in which it realized the dream of self-reliance and the dream of freedom from poverty,*** entered the third stage of its contemporary history,China is now striving to achieve a new dream of shared prosperity for *** by statistical data,this paper argues that China has made a great leap forward in the field of social protection over the past 10-plus *** new leap forward has quietly brought about enormous changes to the Chinese *** one hand,it has stopped inequality from further deteriorating;on the other hand,it has created a benign environment for lessening human insecurity.

History has brought us into a significant moment when the majority of the human kind has taken up resi-dence in urban settlements. The focus of global urbanization has shifted to the developing world and the center of manufacturing is no longer confined to the Global North. This paper provides a periodical assessment of the current status of China's urban transformation in the global context of a shifting emphasis of industrialization and urbaniza-tion. China's phenomenal urban transformation deserves a special attention not only because of its unparalleled scale and speed but also because of its distinct trajectory of growth that does not conform to normal theoretical ex-pectations. The results of assessment revealed an urban economy with remarkable hybridity, a society that is in-creasingly stratified, polarized, and segregated, and a juxtaposed urban space undergoing restless and pervasive transformation. A decentering world should entail a decentering knowledge production. A critical reflection upon the Chinese patterns and processes of urban transformation has identified 4 main issues with great potentials for inno-vative knowledge production, namely: 1) privatization and economic development; 2) state, society, and space; 3) urbanization of capital, labor, and land; and 4) the environment and Chinese political ecology. The paper closes with the remark that a rapidly transforming urban China has presented itself as a fertile and resourceful testing ground for critical and innovative geographic enquiries.

Due to long-term human activity interference,the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park(HTRNP)of China has experienced ecological problems such as habitat fragmentation and biodiversity loss,and with the expanding scope and intensity of human activity impact,the regional ecological security is facing serious challenges.A scientific assessment of the interrelationship between human activity intensity and habitat quality in the HTRNP is a prerequisite for achieving effective management of ecological disturbances caused by human activities and can also provide scientific strategies for the sustainable development of the *** on the land use change data in 2000,2010,and 2020,the spatial and temporal variations and the relationship between habitat quality(HQ)and human activity intensity(HAI)in the HTRNP were explored using the integrated valuation of ecosystem services and trade-offs(InVEST)*** dynamics and land use simulation models were also combined to conduct multi-scenario simulations of their *** results showed that during 2000–2020,the habitat quality of the HTRNP improved,the intensity of human activities decreased each year,and there was a negative correlation between the ***,the system dynamic model could be well coupled with the land use simulation model by combining socio-economic and natural *** simulation scenarios of the coupling model showed that the harmonious development(HD)scenario is effective in curbing the increasing trend of human activity intensity and decreasing trend of habitat quality,with a weaker trade-off between the two compared with the baseline development(BD)and investment priority oriented(IPO)*** maintain the authenticity and integrity of the HTRNP,effective measures such as ecological corridor construction,ecological restoration,and the implementation of ecological compensation policies need to be strengthened.

The impact of social capital on economic development has been broadly studied by scholars. However, research in the Chinese context is relatively rare. Drawing upon data from the China General Social Survey, our results suggest that the enhancing effect of social capital on total factor productivity is very limited in the case of China. The network dimension of social capital is significant only in pooled OLS estimations, and trust as well as the participation dimension of social capital exert no impact across all estimations. Our interpretation is that this is partly due to the fact that trust, values and norms formed in civil society are inherently difficult to transmit to the market sector. Besides, the impact of social capital on economic performance is undermined when physical capital plays a significant role in production. We therefore propose that the effect of social capital on economic performance is contingent on localized social and economic conditions.

The suicide rate in hong kong has increased significantly over the past four *** subgroups such as the elderly or economically-distressed are reported to be more vulnerable than others to suicidal behaviors,while changing suicide meth-ods(such as charcoal burning which emerged in 1998),has also contributed signifi-cantly to increasing suicide ***,the extent of the contribution of different factors to changes in suicide rate remains *** paper reported on a decom-position analysis of the epidemiological profile of suicide in hong kong between 1976 and 2015,specifically considering factors underlying the increasing suicide rate over this *** death registry information was available from the Census and Statistics Department of the hong kong SAR for this *** compared absolute and relative contributions of gender,age and suicide method to rate changes over *** in suicide rate were generally underpinned by more than one *** aging in a rapidly-aging city contributed significantly to suicide rate increases,whilst jumping from a height had the greatest influence on rate changes throughout the study *** by male aged 25-34 years and 45-54 years were more likely to be triggered by economic factors,compared with the other gender-age *** decomposition approach provided a compre-hensive understanding about how socioeconomic factors and suicide methods inter-acted to influence over-time suicide *** research supports development of more focused suicide prevention measures to reduce suicide rate.
