Assessing Floristic Diversity, Stand Structures, and Carbon Stocks in Sacred Forests of West Cameroon: Insights from Bandrefam and Batoufam

Sacred forests play a valuable role in the conservation of local biodiversity and provide numerous ecosystem services in Cameroon. The aim of this study was to estimate floristic diversity, stand structures and carbon stocks in the sacred forests of Bandrefam and Batoufam (western Cameroon). The floristic inventory and the stand structures were carried out in 25 m × 25 m plots for individuals with diameters greater than 10 cm;5 m × 5 m for individuals with diameters less than 10 cm. Carbon stocks were estimated using the non-destructive method and allometric equations. The floristic inventory identified 65 species divided into 57 genera and 30 families in the Bandrefam sacred forest and 45 species divided into 42 genera and 27 families in the Batoufam sacred forest. In the Bandrefam, the most important families are Phyllanthaceae (53.98%), Moraceae (21.69%), Lamiaceae (20.15%). At Batoufam, the most important families are Phyllanthaceae (39.73%), Fabaceae (28.47%), Araliaceae (23.77%). Malacantha alnifolia (55.14%), Vitex grandifolia (18.43%), Bosqueia angolensis (15.06%) were the most important species in Bandrefam. Otherwise, Malacantha alnifolia (28%), Polyscias fulva (22.73%), Psychotria sp. (21.28%) were the most important in Batoufam. The Bandrefam sacred forest has the highest tree density (2669 stems/ha). Total carbon stock is 484.88 ± 2.28 tC/ha at Batoufam and 313.95 ± 0.93 tC/ha at Bandrefam. The economic value varies between 5858.04 ± 27.62 USD/ha in Batoufam sacred forest and 3788.51 ± 11.26 USD/ha in Bandrefam sacred forest. The number of individuals and small-diameter trees has little influence on the carbon stocks in the trees. Medium-diameter trees store the most carbon, and very large-diameter trees, which are very poorly represented, store less carbon. In another way, wood density and the basal areas influence the carbon storage of the trees.

Pyrrolic nitrogen coordinated Ni^(2+) dual-atom catalyst for boosting CO_(2) electroreduction

Nitrogen-doped carbon materials have been widely used for the constructions of single-atom catalysts,while the effect of different species of doped nitrogen on the catalytic activity of CO_(2) electroreduction has rarely been *** we found that pyrrolic-N coordinated Ni2+catalysts display much higher electrocatalytic CO_(2)-to-CO activity and selectivity than the corresponding pyridinic-N coordinated low valent Ni^((0–+2))catalysts,and pyrrolic-N coordinated Ni2 dual-atoms catalyst of Ni2/N-CNTs exhibits the best electrocatalytic performance,with over 90%Faradaic efficiencies in a broad potentials from−0.6 to−1.2 V *** hydrogen electrode,as well as an outstanding CO specific current of 56.2 A/mgNi and high turnover frequency of 6.2×10^(4) h^(−1),over 7-times higher than those of pyridinic-N coordinated Ni *** results indicate the weak electron-donor nature of pyrrolic-N facilitates the generation of a reduced active site at low overpotential for boosting CO_(2) *** functional theory calculations reveal that the reaction free energy for the*COOH formation on pyrrolic-N coordinated Ni catalysts are lower than those on pyridinic-N coordinated Ni catalysts,and a H_(2)Oadsorbed Ni_(2)/N-CNTs displays the optimized reaction free energy for both*COOH formation and CO desorption,which derive the best catalytic performance.

Metal-organic frameworks with dinuclear metal centers for synergistically boosting CO_(2) photoreduction

Dinuclear metal synergistic catalysis(DMSC)has been proved powerful in boosting CO_(2)reduction,while this has not been achieved in heterogeneous catalysts with long-range order *** this study,we,by introduction of metal catalytic centers into an indium-based metal-organic framework(MOF),obtained a series of isostructural In-MOFs,including three MOFs with mononuclear metal catalytic center(M-In),three MOFs with dinuclear homometallic catalytic centers(MM-In),and three MOFs with dinuclear heterometallic catalytic centers(MM’-In,M/M’=Co(II),Ni(II),Zn(II)).It was found that all these MOFs can serve as catalysts for photochemical CO_(2)reduction to *** with M-In,the catalytic activities of MM-In were obviously enhanced,and that of MM’-In was further significantly *** example,the CO yield of Co Zn-In reaches a record value of 12,700μmol g^(-1)h^(-1),which is 4.0,8.1,9.4,and 18.6-fold higher than that of Co Co-In,Zn Zn-In,Co-In,and Zn-In,***,the catalytic activities of Co Ni-In and Ni Zn-In also show different fold increase than those of corresponding dinuclear homometallic and mononuclear metallic *** results of control experiments and theoretical calculation reveal that the higher catalytic activities of MM-In over M-In can be ascribed to the DMSC effect,and the higher catalytic activity of MM’-In over MM-In can be ascribed to the strengthened DMSC *** work reveals the relationship between DMSC effect and bimetal centers in CO_(2)reduction,which provides new insights into the DMSC and paves a new way to design highly active catalysts for photochemical CO_(2)reduction.

The growth,survival,and mortality of conifer species in response to the hydrothermal regime have received considerable *** is expected that the highest sensitivity of trees to the warming-drying climate will occur mainly at the edges of the species *** focused on the responses to climate change of the drought-resistant larch(Larix sibirica)and the moisture-sensitive Siberian pine(Pinus sibirica)along the elevation gradient in the Tannu-Ola Ridge,the southern margin where those two species coexist in Siberia by using satellite data(MODIS,Landsat,and microwave),the indexes of gross(GPP)and net(NPP)primary productivity,and tree radial growth index(GI).We found that since the warming restart in the 2000s,the area of larch-dominated forests increased by~150%while the area of pine-dominated forests decreased by~10%.The Siberian pine has retreated at low elevations(higher *** contrast,the area of larch stands increased in both the uphill and downhill ***(Betula spp.)also increased its area at low elevations(about+120%).Since 2001,the forested area increased by~5%.A shrubification,i.e.,an increase in the area of shrubs,was observed at high *** uphill rate of timberline and shrubline migration was about 0.3 m/*** the 2000s,vegetation NPP has increased by 13%.A notable correlation between NPP and the GI of larch and pine was found(r=0.5-0.7).At lower elevations,NPP positively correlated with precipitation and soil moisture,while air temperature and VPD(vapor pressure deficit)increase inhibited *** high elevations,the effects of these variables on productivity *** continuous decline of the Siberian pine forest indicates an inevitable retreat of this species at low elevations and its replacement by larch and birch.

Deforestation is one of the most serious environmental problems facing *** continues to escalate rapidly across many regions of the world,thereby deteriorating the forest soil *** has prompted a large number of field-based studies aimed at understanding the impacts of deforestation on soil ***,the lack of comprehensive meta-analyses that utilized these studies has limited our deeper understanding of how different soil properties,including the soil organic carbon(SOC)pool,respond to *** address this critical knowledge gap,we conducted a meta-analysis of 144 studies to explore the impacts of deforestation on soil chemical,physical,and biological properties,with special emphasis on the long-term changes in SOC,such as concentrations,stocks,and *** results revealed that deforestation significantly decreased soil organic matter,electrical conductivity,and base saturation by 52%,50%,and 98%,*** deforestation increased soil total nitrogen content and decreased available phosphorus content by 51%and 99%,respectively,it resulted in slight decreases in some chemical properties,including soil pH(1%)and base cations(1%–13%).Deforestation significantly increased bulk density by 27%and soil erosion by 47%,but significantly decreased soil aggregate stability by 39%and saturated hydraulic conductivity by 63%.Soil microbial biomass C and N concentrations and enzyme activities were significantly decreased as a consequence of *** biological properties were much more affected by deforestation than soil physical and chemical *** the SOC,the land use conversion from forest to pasture significantly increased SOC concentrations,stocks,and sequestration rates(11%–13%),whereas the land use conversions from forest to both plantation and cropland significantly decreased SOC concentrations,stocks,and sequestration rates(10%–43%).This observed decline in SOC accumulations decreased with inc

Platinum modification of metallic cobalt defect sites for efficient electrocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

Co3O4possesses both direct and indirect oxidation effects and is considered as a promising catalyst for the oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural（HMF）.However,the enrichment and activation effects of Co3O4on OH-and HMF are weak,which limits its further *** defect engineering can regulate the electronic structure,optimize the adsorption of intermediates,and improve the catalytic activity by breaking the symmetry of the material,which is rarely involved in the upgrading of *** this work,we prepare Co3O4with metal defects and load the precious metal platinum at the defect sites（PtVco）.The results of in-situ characterizatio ns,electrochemical measurements,and theoretical calculations indicate that the reduction of Co-Co coordination number and the formation of Pt-Co bond induce the decrease of electron filling in the antibonding orbitals of Co *** resulting upward shift of the d-band center of Co combined with the characteristic adsorption of Pt species synergically enhances the enrichment and activation of organic molecules and OH species,thus exhibiting excellent HMF oxidation activity(including a lower onset potential（1.14 V） and 19 times higher current density than pure Co3O4at 1.35 V).In summary,this work explores the adsorption enhancement mechanism of metal defect sites modified by precious metal in detail,provides a new option for improving the HMF oxidation activity of cobalt-based materials,broadens the application field of metal defect based materials,and gives an innovative guidance for the functional utilization of metal defect sites in biomass conversion.
