Pressure engineering of intertwined phase transitions in lanthanide monopnictide NdSb

Coexistence of non-trivial band topology and intrinsic magnetic order not only leads to emergent phenomena but also allows for the tunability of the exotic properties from different degrees of freedom. By performing transport measurements at synergetic extreme conditions, here we report on pressure engineering of intertwined structural, magnetic, and topological phase transitions in an antiferromagnetic Dirac semimetal NdSb. We show that the original antiferromagnetic state is strengthened in the lowpressure region while destabilized upon further compression close to the critical pressure where a structural transition from Fm-3m phase to P4/mmm phase takes place at P~18 GPa, forming a yurt-shaped evolution in response to magnetic field,pressure and temperature. Concomitant with the structural transition, NdSb simultaneously carries on a magnetic transition to the ferromagnetic state. Moreover, theoretical calculations unravel that the ferromagnetic tetragonal phase presents nontrivial features of Weyl fermions. These findings offer new important insight into the microscopic interplay among lattice, spin, and relativistic fermions in lanthanide monopnictides.

Power Consideration for Pulsed Discharges in Potassium Seeded Argon

Minimization of energy consumed in plasma generation is critical for applications, in which a large volume of plasmas is needed. We suggest that a high electron density atmospheric pressure plasmas can be generated by pulsed discharges in potassium seeded argon at an elevated temperature with a very small power input. The ionization efficiency and power budget of pulsed discharges in such plasmas are analytically studied. The results show that ionization efficiency of argon, especially at small reduced electric field E/N （the ratio of the electric field to the gas number density）, is improved effectively in the presence of small amount of potassium additives. Power input of pulsed discharge to sustain a prescribed average level of ionization in potassium seeded argon is three orders of magnitude lower than that in pure argon. Further, unlike in pure argon, it is found that very short high-voltage pulses with very high repetition rates are unnecessary in potassium seeded argon. A pulse with lOOns of pulse duration, 5kHz of repetition rate, and 2Td （1 Td = 1 × 10^-21 Vm^2） of E/N is enough to sustain an electron density of 10^19 m^-3 in 1 arm 1500K Ar＋0.1% K mixture, with a very small power input of about 0.08 × 10^4 W/m^3.

Total synthesis of snake toxin α-bungarotoxin and its analogues by hydrazide-based native chemical ligation

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors(nAChRs) play important roles in intercellular communications of nerve cells. α-Bungarotoxins(αBtx) is a moderator for the nAChRs. Chemical synthesis provides a promising way to access aBtx and their analogues. Here, we reported a new method for a-bungarotoxin by combining Fmoc-SPPS and peptide hydrazide based ligation strategy. The two-segment ligation method may enable efficient synthesis of aBtx analogues. These synthetic toxin peptides are useful tools for development of imaging or therapeutic reagents.

Grain boundary-induced drastic sensing performance enhancement of Fe_(2)O_(3) gas sensors for acetone

In cell measurement of fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy revealed C-terminal conformation changes of Ferroportin upon addition of Mn^2＋

Fluorescence microscopy, as a sensitive method to detect microenvironment of molecules, is widely used in protein conformation and dynamic studies in live cells. Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy（FLIM）, which is independent of fluorophore concentrations, scattering and bleaching, is a suitable tool to analyze membrane proteins in a single cell. Ferroportin（FPN）, a multi-ion exporter in vertebrates, was modulated by metal ions with unknown mechanism. Herein, we fused green fluorescence protein on Cterminal of FPN（FPN-eGFP） and applied fluorescence lifetime to monitor conformation changes of FPN in a live cell. The fluorescence lifetime distribution showed a shift to shorter lifetime upon Mn^（2＋） treatment,suggesting a preference conformation of FPN in Mn^（2＋） exposure. It is also observed that the lifetime（rather than intensity） measurement was not strongly influenced by laser power. The observed fluorescence lifetime changes of FPN-eGFP upon Mn^（2＋） treatments indicated that extracellular metal ions can modulate FPN through conformation exchanges between several different states.

Spin-dependent Transport Properties of CrO_2 Micro Rod

The Cr O2 micro rod powder was synthesized by decomposing the Cr O3 flakes at a specific temperature to yield precursor and annealing such a precursor in a sealed glass tube. The magneto-transport properties have been measured by a direct current four-probe method using a Cu/Cr O2rods/colloidal silver liquid electrode sandwich device. The largest magnetoresistance(MR) around *72 % was observed at 77 K with applied current of 0.05 l A. The non-linear I–V curve indicates a tunneling type transport properties and the tunneling barrier height is around 2.2 ± 0.04 e V at 77 K, which is obtained with fitting the non-linear I–V curves using Simmons' equation. A mixing of Cr oxides on the surface of Cr O2 rod observed by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy provides a tunneling barrier rather than a single phase of Cr2O3 insulating barrier. The MR shows strong bias voltage dependence and is ascribed to the two-step tunneling process.

A GMR（giant magneto-resistive） spin valve sensor for magnetic recording has been designed in an attempt to solve the Barkhausen noise problem in small-sized GMR *** this study,the GMR ratio of the top-pinned spin valve is optimized to a value of 13.2%.The free layer is magnetized perpendicular to the pinned layer by a CoCrPt permanent magnetic bias so that a linear magnetic field response can be *** obvious improvement on performance is observed when the permanent magnetic bias is magnetized,while the GMR sensor has a steadier MR-H loop and a smaller coercive field.

Acetaminophen overdose-induced acute liver injury can be alleviated by static magnetic field

Acetaminophen(APAP),the most frequently used mild analgesic and antipyretic drug worldwide,is implicated in causing 46%of all acute liver failures in the USA and between 40%and 70%in *** predominant pharmacological intervention approved for mitigating such overdose is the antioxidant N-acetylcysteine(NAC);however,its efficacy is limited in cases of advanced liver injury or when administered at a late *** the current study,we discovered that treatment with a moderate intensity static magnetic field(SMF)notably reduced the mortality rate in mice subjected to high-dose APAP from 40%to 0%,proving effective at both the initial liver injury stage and the subsequent recovery *** the early phase of liver injury,SMF markedly reduced APAPinduced oxidative stress,free radicals,and liver damage,resulting in a reduction in multiple oxidative stress markers and an increase in the antioxidant glutathione(GSH).During the later stage of liver recovery,application of vertically downward SMF increased DNA synthesis and hepatocyte ***,the combination of NAC and SMF significantly mitigated liver damage induced by high-dose APAP and increased liver recovery,even 24 h post overdose,when the effectiveness of NAC alone substantially ***,this study provides a noninvasive non-pharmaceutical tool that offers dual benefits in the injury and repair stages following APAP *** note,this tool can work as an alternative to or in combination with NAC to prevent or minimize liver damage induced by APAP,and potentially other toxic overdoses.
