Many theoretical studies have been developed to study the spectral response of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) under non-uniform strain distribution along the length of FBG in recent years. However, almost no experiments were designed to obtain the evolution of the spectrum when a FBG is subjected to non-uniform strain. In this paper, the spectral responses of a FBG under non-uniform strain distributions are given and a numerical simulation based on the Runge-Kutta method is introduced to investigate the responses of the FBG under some typical non-uniform transverse strain fields, including both linear strain gradient and quadratic strain field. Experiment is carried out by using loads applied at different locations near the FBG. Good agreements between experimental results and numerical simulations are obtained.

We have carried out a numerical simulation of the effect of gold doping on the electrical characteristics of long silicon diodes exposed to neutron irradiation. The aim is to investigate the effect of gold on the hardness of the irradiated diodes. The reverse current voltage and capacitance voltage characteristics of doped and undoped diodes are calculated for different irradiation doses. The leakage current and the effective doping density are extracted from these two characteristics respectively. The hardness of the diodes is evaluated from the evolution of the leakage current and the effective doping density with irradiation doses. It was found that diodes doped with gold are less sensitive to irradiation than undoped ones. Thus gold appears to stabilise the electrical properties on irradiation. The conduction mechanism is studied by the evolution of the current with temperature. The evaluated activation energy indicates that as the gold doping or irradiation dose increases, the current switches from the basic diffusion to the generation-recombination process, and that it can even become ohmic for very high gold densities or irradiation doses.

The transient time-resolved reflectivity of chromium film is studied by femtosecond pump-probe technique with a 70-fs laser. Experimental results show that the reflectivity change increases with the power of the pump laser. The fast decrease of the reflectivity occurs between 0-200 fs which is mainly due to the electron-electron interaction. Subsequencely, the slower recovery of the reflectivity between 200-900 fs is mainly due to the electron-phonon coupling process. The reflectivity after 900 fs rises little to a near-constant value for the thermal equilibrium of the system. The experimental results can be explained properly with numerical simulation of the two-temperature model. It is helpful for understanding of the electron ultrafast dynamics in chromium film.

Comprehending the pressure-/temperature-induced structural transition in glasses,as one of the most fascinating issues in material science,is far from being well ***,we report novel polyamorphic transitions in a Cu-based metallic glass(MG)with apparent nanoscale structural heterogeneity relating to proper Y *** low-density MG compresses continuously with increasing pressure,and then a compression plateau appears after∼8.1 GPa,evolving into an intermediate state with an ultrahigh bulk modulus of∼467 *** then transforms to a high-density MG with significantly decreased structural heterogeneity above∼14.1 ***-dimensional atom probe tomography reveals concentration waves of Cu/Zr elements with an average wavelength of∼5-6 nm,which promote the formation of interconnected ringlike networks composed of Cu-rich and Zr-rich dual-glass domains at nanometer *** experimental and simulation results indicate that steplike polyamorphism may stem from synergic effects of the abnormal compression of the Zr-Zr bond length at the atomic scale and the interplay between the applied pressure and incipient concentration waves(Cu and Zr)at several nanometer *** present work provides new insights into polyamorphism in glasses and contributes to the development of high-performance amorphous materials by high-pressure nanostructure engineering.

Recently,there has been considerable interest in the use of microchannel reactors for hydrometallurgy of rare earths(REs).Here,a novel integrated microchannel reactor based on the hollow-strut SiC foam material is presented and demonstrated to extract Ce^(3+)and Pr^(3+)using 2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester(P507)as the *** typical three-dimensional reticulated structure of the hollow-strut SiC foam was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray micro computed *** the reactor’s structure plays a key role in fluid mixing and mass diffusion during the extraction process,the structure-performance relationship of the foam was studied by extraction experiments combined with numerical *** the foam with the optimal structure,the influence of the flow rate Q_(0) of the two liquid phases on the extraction efficiency η and overall volume mass transfer coefficient KLa was *** both RE ions,with increasing Q_(0),η decreases while KLa *** the total flow rate of the two phases of 4 ml·min^(-1),the η values of Pr^(3+)and Ce^(3+)reached 98.7%and 97.0%,*** the total flow rate of 36 ml·min^(-1) which was much higher than that of many other microchannel reactors reported in the literatures,the η values of Pr^(3+)and Ce^(3+)still reached 92.2%and 86.9%,respectively,and the KLa values of Pr^(3+)and Ce^(3+)were 0.198 and 0.161 s^(-1),respectively,similar to the high values reported for other microchannel reactors studied in previous *** findings indicate that the hollow-strut SiC foam microchannel reactor is suitable for use in REs extraction.

We demonstrate that a finite number of nano-slits can realize beam splitting and focusing of light by coating the metallic film surfaces with nonlinear Kerr medium. The numerical simulation shows that the beam splitting and focusing can be controlled by the incident light intensity. The splitting angle is quasi- periodically modulated by the incident light intensity, and the focusing length of forward propagating transmitted light decreases as the incident light intensity increases. These effects are explained by the surface plasmon polariton Bloch modes and self-focusing theory.

Deformation of casting during the solidification process has puzzled many engineers and scientists for years. In order to attain the goal of near-net forming by casting, numerical simulation is a powerful tool. Traditional methods compute the thermal stress of both the casting and the mold. This method suffers the problem of massive calculation and failure of convergence. This paper proposes an improved Mold Surface Element Method, the main idea of which is to use the surface elements instead of body elements to express the interactions between the casting and the mold. The proposed method shows a high computation efficiency and provides satisfactory precision for engineering. Two practical casting products were used to verify the proposed method. The simulated results agree well with those observed in practical products. The proposed method is believed to benefit production practice and to provide theoretical guidance.
