Carposome productivity of Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus eryngii growing on agro-industrial residues enriched with nitrogen,calcium salts and oils

The suitability of the abundant agro-industrial residues wheat straw(WS;control),barley and oats straw(BOS)and rice husk(RH),supplemented with various sources of oils(sunflower,corn oil),nitrogen(peptone,yeast extract)and calcium salts(CaSO_(4)⋅2H_(2)O,CaCl2),as novel substrates in solid-state fermentation of selected Pleurotus ostreatus and *** mushrooms was *** possible effect of different additives on mycelial growth rate,biomass production and endoglucanase,laccase and lipase biosynthesis were ***,their impact on essential cultivation aspects(earliness,total mushroom yield,biological efficiency)and carposome quality parameters(weight,morphological characteristics)was *** fungi showed their highest growth rates on BOS substrates and the most positive implementation was CaSO_(4)⋅2H_(2)O 6%w/w(Kr=9.58 mm/day;***,Kr=9.42 mm/day;***),while different additives led to enhancement of biomass *** species demonstrated minimal levels of endoglucanase activity,with values ranging from 0.01 to 0.42 U/g of dry weight,regardless of the substrate and the stage of *** the contrary,the maximum values of laccase activity were observed at 50%of colonization on BOS and RH,while supplementation with nitrogen and calcium sources positively affected its *** and *** cultivated on BOS supplemented with peptone at 2 and 5%w/w,synthesized significant laccase amounts,i.e.,12,165.78 and 8,624.55 U/g d.w.,*** amounts of lipase were produced,especially in substrates supplemented with sunflower 2%w/w,in quantities up to 1.42 U/g d.w.,whereas the highest lipase activity was achieved by *** on WS supplemented with corn oil at 2%w/w,with a value of 4.25 U/g *** *** fermentation of Pleurotus species in polypropylene bags,WS and BOS supported faster colonization and shorter earliness period than RH substrates,whereas supplementation did no

RAPD Markers and Genetic Information Entropy in Environmental Monitoring: A Case Study with Wild Mushrooms

Mushrooms have a remarkable scientific value due to their nutritional, medicinal properties and industrial applications in enzyme production, so that effort in the maintenance of native wild mushroom varieties is increasing. The present study focuses on the use of Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers for biodiversity measure of wild mushroom species of the Northwest mountainous region of Greece. Data mining of similarity matrices from RAPD analysis was used to extract measurable entropy parameters for mushroom biodiversity monitoring based on Shannon’s information entropy. Shannon information index provides an easy assessment of the entropy of the genetic information of the germplasm per mushroom species while the total equitability index (EH) = 0.871 offers an overall estimation of the genetic variation evenness of all species in the population of the studied mushrooms. Application of RAPDs with parallel entropy analysis is an easily applicable and low-cost valuable technology in environmental monitoring, using genetic information of wild mushroom species as an indicator that can lead to future actions in biodiversity maintenance and germplasm protection. The provided methodology can serve as a pilot procedure enriched with other environmental factors to monitor and protect wild mushroom communities native to the Greek countryside or in any part of the world and provide comparable results about biodiversity from different regions using common entropy indices.

Cultivating Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus eryngii mushroom strains onagro-industrial residues in solid-state fermentation. Part II: Effect onproductivity and quality of carposomes

The potential of selected Pleurotus ostreatus and P. eryngii wild-type and commercial strains to colonize andproduce carposomes after solid-state fermentation of five substrates constituted of agro-residues namely wheatstraw (WS), beech wood shavings (BWS), coffee residue (CR), barley and oats straw (BOS), rice bark (RB),supplemented with wheat bran was investigated. The effect of substrate composition on bioprocess feasibilitywas assessed for the different strains by quantitative (i.e., mushroom yield and Biological Efficiency-BE %) andcarposome qualitative parameters (i.e., weight, size, colour, firmness). P. ostreatus strains produced carposomesearlier than P. eryngii ones. Early fruiting formation was promoted in WS for P. ostreatus strains, whereas forP. eryngii the lowest values of earliness were observed on BOS substrate. As for crop productivity, P. ostreatusstrain AMRL 150 provided the highest BE (>70%) in all substrates except for RB, while P. ostreatus strain AMRL144 achieved the highest yield and BE in BOS and BWS (75.30 and 64.26%, respectively). P. eryngii stainsproduced less number but heavier carposomes. The highest values of BE% for these strains were recorded on WSand BOS substrates. The BE was further correlated to growth parameters of fungal vegetative phase. As formushroom colour, P. ostreatus were lighter than P. eryngii and BOS substrate promoted lightness in both *** P. ostreatus mushrooms were produced at CR. No differences in the whiteness and firmness were detectedamong P. eryngii mushrooms and at any substrate used. The data included in this paper showed that Pleurotusmushrooms can be cultivated on low- or zero-value agro-industrial residues of great financial and environmentalimportance towards the production of value-added food products.

Forests of Greece, Their Multiple Functions and Uses, Sustainable Management and Biodiversity Conservation in the Face of Climate Change

This is a review paper based on national and international literature, national inventories and empirical approach. A general overview of the forests, forest management and forest biodiversity of Greece are briefly summarized. The distribution of the main forest species and their ecosystems in the Geographic regions of Greece is presented in a tabular form. Their multiple functions and uses, their management type/regime, their risks and threats, protection and conservation measures are also synoptically described. Furthermore, adaptive forest management and silviculture as well as management of genetic diversity in order to face climate change are also analysed. Research priority areas on biodiversity and challenges for biodiversity research and related policy in Greece have been summarized. The new Rural Development Program (2014-2020), which is currently in the final phase of implementation, will take into consideration the forest itself and forest-related European and National legal obligations. Finally, major conclusions and research priority areas on future management and conservation of forests are highlighted.

Implementation of Forest Policy in Greece in Relation to Biodiversity and Climate Change

This is a review article based on literature (national and international) and empirical approach. A general overview on research priority areas on biodiversity and approaches and tools to provide information for forest policy implementation on biodiversity are briefly summarized. Challenges for biodiversity research and related policy in Europe and Greece are depicted. General information on forests, protected areas and forest management in Greece is also presented. Major actions and measures for conservation of forest biodiversity in Greece are described and analysed. The implementation of forest policy in Greece (including the adoption of International constitutional frame) in relation to biodiversity protection and climate change is also analysed. Priorities identified by the Strategic Plan of Rural Development 2007-2013 in Greece in order to adapt to climate change, are also presented. Furthermore, the National institutional framework (Legislation) and strategic targets for biodiversity conservation in Greece are synoptically presented. Finally, major conclusions and future challenges are highlighted.

Metabolic Response of Diabetic Patients with Obesity and No Obesity during Bruce Treadmill Test

Background: Physical exercise alters many biochemical parameters of human body. For that reason, it is recommended as a cure for many diseases of modern life like obesity and diabetics. This study investigates the biochemical and hormonal changes in diabetic, hypertensive and obese individuals after Bruce treadmill tests of different durations and intensities. Method: Our sample consisted of 59 individuals, divided into four groups: A: 12 normal body-weight diabetics, B: 11 overweight diabetics, C: 14 normal body-weight non-diabetics and D: 22 overweight non-diabetics. 66.1% of them were men. The comparisons were done between: 1) Diabetics versus non-diabetics;2) Over-weight versus normal body-weight persons;3) Over-weight diabetics versus normal weight diabetics;4) Over-weight non-diabetics versus normal body-weight non-diabetics of 5) Hypertensives versus non-hypertensives. All individuals performed an intense, short duration treadmill exercise test, independently of the presence or not of DM2, hypertension and obesity. Results: The participants with DM2 (obese and non-obese) had decreased levels of glucose, triglycerides and TSH (P Conclusion: Our results proved that the physical exercise, even if it has short duration like that of the Bruce test, has beneficial results in persons with DM2, obesity and arterial hypertension, as well as in normal persons.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of various presowing treatments on the germinability(final germination percentage)and germination rate of loquat seeds in order to increase seedling production in nurseries(applied research)as well as provide answers for important physiological issues related to loquat seeds and their seed coat(basic research).Three experiments were carried out with various pre-sowing *** treatments included full or partial removal of seed coat(perisperm),partial cutting of cotyledons as well as moist chilling at 5℃ for 13 days and/or soaking the seeds in water or 250 ppm gibberellic acid(GA_(3))solution for 24 *** to the results,cotyledons excision resulted in delayed germination,regardless of the presence or absence of the seed coat in comparison with the decoated seeds that demonstrated the highest germination rate amongst *** addition,even the partial excision of seed coats affected positively both the germinability and the germination rate,compared to the control-intact ***,control-intact seeds had a higher germination percentage when exposed to moist chilling independently of the application or not of gibberellin;while the combination of gibberellin application and moist chilling improved both the percentage and the rate of germination of decoated *** conclusion,the role of perisperm(seed coat)in the germination procedure of loquat seeds seems to be important,indicating the existence of seed coat-imposed dormancy on loquat ***,the existence of a mild endogenous embryo-dormancy on loquat is also discussed.

Utilization of coal fly ash and municipal sewage sludge in agriculture and for reconstruction of soils in disturbed lands： results of case studies from Greece and China

Coal fly ash (CFA) and municipal sewage sludge (MSS) management is a great concern worldwide. An alternative gaining high interest, is their use in agriculture and for reclamation of degraded lands. The purpose of this paper was to present very briefly the results of some case studies carried out in China and Greece related to land reclamation and agricultural use of CFA and MSS separately or combined. An experiment in Platanoulia area, central Greece showed clearly that CFA applied together with MSS at appropriate rates increased substantially wheat grain and biomass yield and improved soil quality (increased soil pH, organic matter content, total nitrogen, available P and boron). In a long-term experiment carried out in Huaibei city, Anhui province, China with a reconstructed soil in a subsided land by using CFA, it was found that physicochemical characteristics (infiltration rate, bulk density, total nitrogen, available P and extractable K) tended to be improved over time. In another experiment in Rodia area central Greece, MSS application improved soil quality of limestone mining spoils from bauxite mining activities. Several other experiments with MSS in Greece showed a clear positive effect on cotton and maize yield and on soil quality.
