AIM To compare transcriptomes of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) and alcoholic liver disease(ALD) in a meta-analysis of liver *** Employing transcriptome data from patient liver biopsies retrieved from several public repositories we performed a meta-analysis comparing ALD and *** We observed predominating commonalities at the transcriptome level between ALD and NAFLD,most prominently numerous down-regulated metabolic pathways and cytochrome-related pathways and a few up-regulated pathways which include ECM-receptor interaction,phagosome and *** some pathways were regulated in opposite directions in ALD and NAFLD,for example,glycolysis was down-regulated in ALD and up-regulated in ***,we found rate-limiting genes such as HMGCR,SQLE and CYP7A1 which are associated with cholesterol processes adversely regulated between ALD(down-regulated) and NAFLD(up-regulated).We propose that similar phenotypes in both diseases may be due to a lower level of the enzyme CYP7A1 compared to the cholesterol synthesis enzymes HMGCR and ***,we provide a compendium of comparative KEGG pathways regulation in ALD and *** Our finding of adversely regulated cholesterol processes in ALD and NAFLD draws the focus to regulation of cholesterol secretion into ***,it will be interesting to further investigate CYP7A1-mediated cholesterol secretion into bile-also as possible drug *** list of potential novel biomarkers may assist differential diagnosis of ALD and NAFLD.

Dear Editor, Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase （PEPC; EC 4.***.1.31） islocated at an important branch point in the carbohydratemetabolism of plants. The enzyme is a homotetramer andcatalyzes the addition of bicarbonate to phosphoenolpyru-vate （PEP） to form oxaloacetate and phosphate. PEPC isregulated by metabolites and phosphorylation. AIIostericfeedback inhibition is mainly regulated by L-malate andL-aspartate which bind to a site separated from the activecenter （Kai et al., 1999; Paulus et al., 2013）. Structure analy-sis of PEPC from Escherichia coli （Kai et al., 1999; Matsumuraet al., 2002）, Zea rnays （Matsumura et al., 2002）, Flaveria trin-ervia, and F. pringlei （Paulus et al., 2013） revealed that thesubstrate PEP and the feedback inhibitors bind to separatesites within each monomer.

This paper empirically examines the effect of patents on capital costs in venture lending contracts. Based on a proprietary dataset entailing 119 venture lending contracts issued by a European venture lending fund between 2002 and 2009 in Europe, the United States, and Israel, we conduct the first quantitative empirical analysis on venture lending as an innovative form of financing for entrepreneurial fLrrns. Our results show that the presence of at least one granted or pending patent negatively influences direct （credit spread） and indirect （warrant coverage） costs of venture lending contracts. Thus, the presence of patents conveys information and is a signal of quality to the payoff distribution of the venture loans. Furthermore, we show that the company development stage negatively influences the relation between patents and capital costs, i.e., in later stages, patents seem to represent a less relevant quality signal than in earlier stages.

Lung cancer represents the leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide. Despite improvements in preoperative staging, surgical techniques, neoadjuvant/adjuvant options and postoperative care, there are still major difficulties in significantly improving survival, especially in locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC). To date, surgical resection is the primary mode of treatment for stage?Ⅰ?and Ⅱ NSCLC and has become an important component of the multimodality therapy of even more advanced disease with a curative intention. In fact, in NSCLC patients with solitary distant metastases, surgical interventions have been discussed in the last years. Accordingly, this review displays the recent surgical strategies implemented in the therapy of NSCLC patients.

The management of patients with coexisting diseases who undergo cardiac surgery is a subject to controversial discussions as the operative mortality is thought to be increased by simultaneous procedures. Traditionally, the surgical procedures have been staged with the cardiac surgery performed first followed by the visceral operation at a later date. However, especially in cases of malignant disease (e. g. pulmonary or abdominal) the curative treatment is delayed and the additional costs of two settings have to be considered. 1 Although encouraging results have been reported concerning simultaneous pulmonary tumor resection, carotid endarterectomy or abdominal aneurysm repair, 2-5 detailed knowledge concerning further coexisting non-cardiac diseases requiring surgical therapy is still lacking. In some extremely rare cases patients suffer from more than just one coexisting disease of different origins: the current report focuses on a 61-year-old female patient suffering from ischemic heart disease, occlusion of the innominate artery and a retrosternal goiter as an incidental finding. She was treated in a simultaneous procedure with three operations in only one setting. The perioperative features of this special case are reflected in the following course.

The ultrafast charge dynamics following the interaction of an ultra-intense laser pulse with a foil target leads to the launch of an ultra-short, intense electromagnetic(EM) pulse along a wire connected to the target. Due to the strong electric field(of the order of GV m^(-1)) associated to such laser-driven EM pulses, these can be exploited in a travelling-wave helical geometry for controlling and optimizing the parameters of laser accelerated proton beams. The propagation of the EM pulse along a helical path was studied by employing a proton probing technique. The pulse-carrying coil was probed along two orthogonal directions, transverse and parallel to the coil axis. The temporal profile of the pulse obtained from the transverse probing of the coil is in agreement with the previous measurements obtained in a planar geometry. The data obtained from the longitudinal probing of the coil shows a clear evidence of an energy dependent reduction of the proton beam divergence, which underpins the mechanism behind selective guiding of laser-driven ions by the helical coil targets.

Deep brain stimulation has become a well-established symptomatic treatment for Parkinson＇s disease during the last 25 years. Besides improving motor symptoms and long-term motor complications, positive effects on patients＇ mobility, activities of daily living, emotional well-being and health-related quality of life have been recognized. Apart from that, numerous clinical trials analyzed effects on non-motor symptoms and side effects of deep brain stimulation. Several technical issues and stimulation paradigms have been and are still being developed to optimize the therapeutic effects, minimize the side effects and facilitate handling. This review summarizes current therapeutic issues, i.e., patient and target selection, surgical procedure and programming paradigms. In addition it focuses on neuropsychological effects and side effects of deep brain stimulation.

In neonates, persistent hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia (PHH) is associated with nesidioblastosis. In adults, PHH is usually caused by solitary benign insulinomas. We report on an adult patient who suffered from insulin-de- pendent diabetes mellitus, and subsequently developed PHH caused by diffuse nesidioblastosis. Mutations of the MEN1 and Mody 2/3 genes were ruled out. Preoperative diagnostic procedures, the histopathological criteria and the surgical treatment options of adult nesidioblastosis are discussed. So far only one similar case of adult nesidioblastosis subsequent to diabetes mellitus Ⅱ has been reported in the literature. In case of conversion of diabetes into hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia syndrome, nesidioblastosis in addition to insulinoma should be con- sidered.
