Numerical magnitude processing in abacus-trained children with superior mathematical ability: an EEG study

Distance effect has been regarded as the best established marker of basic numerical magnitude processes and is related to individual mathematical abilities. A larger behavioral distance effect is suggested to be concomitant with lower mathematical achievement in children. However, the relationship between distance effect and superior mathematical abilities is unclear. One could get superior mathematical abilities by acquiring the skill of abacus-based mental calculation （AMC）, which can be used to solve calculation problems with exceptional speed and high accuracy. In the current study, we explore the relationship between distance effect and superior mathematical abilities by examining whether and how the AMC training modifies numerical magnitude processing. Thus, mathematical competencies were tested in 18 abacus-trained children （who accepted the AMC training） and 18 non-trained children. Electroencephalography （EEG） waveforms were recorded when these children executed numerical comparison tasks in both Arabic digit and dot array forms. We found that：（a） the abacus-trained group had superior mathematical abilities than their peers; （b） distance effects were found both in behavioral results and on EEG wave- forms; （c） the distance effect size of the average amplitude on the late negative-going component was different between groups in the digit task, with a larger effect size for abacus-trained children; （d） both the behavioral and EEG distance effects were modulated by the notation. These results revealed that the neural substrates of magnitude processing were modified by AMC training, and suggested that the mechanism of the representation of numerical magnitude for children with superior mathematical abilities was different from their peers. In addition, the results provide evidence for a view of non-abstract numerical representation.

Estimating input signal of a system is called deconvolution or input *** white noise deconvolution has important applications in oil seismic exploration,communications,and signal *** paper addresses the problem of designing robust white noise deconvolution estimators for a class of uncertain systems with missing measurements,uncertain noise variances and linearly correlated white *** introducing fictitious noise,the considered system is converted into one with only uncertain noise *** to the minimax robust estimation principle,based on the worst-case system with the conservative upper bounds of uncertain noise variances,using Kalman filtering approach,the robust time-varying white noise deconvolution estimators（predictor,filter,and smoother） are presented in a unified *** the Lyapunov equation approach,their robustness is proved in the sense that their actual estimation error variances are guaranteed to have the corresponding minimal upper bounds for all admissible *** accuracy relations among the three white noise deconvolution estimators are proved.A simulation example shows the effectiveness and correctness of the proposed results.

The guaranteed cost prediction problem for discrete-time systems with uncertain noise variances and missing measurements is considered where missing measurement is described as Bernoulli random *** system under consideration can be converted into that only with uncertain noise variances by introducing fictitious measurement noises,then two classes of guaranteed cost robust centralized fusion Kalman predictors are presented by Lyapunov equation approach based on minimax robust estimation principle and parameterization representation of uncertain noise *** class is to find the maximal perturbation region of uncertain noise variances so as to guarantee that the accuracy deviations remain within a given free *** other class is to find the maximal lower bound and the minimal upper bound of the accuracy deviations over the prescribed bounded perturbation region of noise *** proposed guaranteed cost predictors can give minimal upper and maximal lower bound of accuracy deviations.A simulation example shows the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed results.

Objective This paper aims to assess the interaction between common variations in catalase（CAT） polymorphic gene and environmental factors for antioxidant defense enzyme in modulating individual susceptibility to colorectal cancer（CRC）.Methods A case-control study with 880 colorectal cancer cases and 848 controls was conducted to investigate whether variations in the catalase（CAT） gene,one of the genes involved in scavenging oxidative stress,influenced susceptibility to *** The interaction between life style and genotypes as well as with their effects on colorectal cancer was deduced from the present *** difference（P=0.01） was identified in the distribution of CAT genotype between the colorectal cancer cases and the *** CRC cases had significantly lower mean activity than the controls（P〈0.01）.Correlation analyses revealed statistically significant correlations between CAT activity and CAT genotype（P〈0.01）.Conclusion The risk of CRC was associated with smoking,low vegetable consumption,high pork and poultry consumptions,and low or high *** is the first study reporting an association of polymorphism CAT-21A〉T with colorectal *** CAT activity was associated with an increased risk of CRC;however,no evidence was found to support an association between CAT-21A〉T polymorphism and CRC risk.

BACKGROUND Medication misuse or overuse is significantly associated with poor health *** regarding the knowledge,cultural beliefs,and behavior about medication safety in the general population is *** To conduct a survey on medication habits and explored the potential factors impacting medication *** The current survey included adults from 18 districts and counties in Harbin,China.A questionnaire on medication safety was designed based on knowledge,cultural beliefs,and *** univariate and multivariate analyses were used to explore the factors that impacted medication *** A total of 394 respondents completed the questionnaires on medication *** mean scores for knowledge,cultural beliefs,and behavior about medication safety were 59.41±19.33,40.66±9.24,and 60.97±13.69,*** medication knowledge score was affected by age(P=0.044),education(P<0.001),and working status(P=0.015).Moreover,the cultural beliefs score was significantly affected by education(P<0.001).Finally,education(P=0.003)and working status(P=0.011)significantly affected the behavior *** The knowledge,cultural beliefs,and behavior about medication safety among the general population was *** education should be provisioned for the elderly,individuals with a low education level,and the unemployed to improve medication safety in Harbin,China.
