The Arabian Peninsula experiences elevated levels of airborne particulate originated from both natural and anthropogenic sources. This study is mainly aimed to determine the ambient levels of TSP, PM10 and PM2.5) at one of the monitoring locations “Al Samha” that is located in the northeast quadrant of UAE. Mass concentrations, particle count, as well as meteorological parameters were simultaneously measured using a spectrometer, PM10 beta attenuation monitor and weather sensors for the period from April 10 to December 31, 2011. The hourly mean concentrations of TSP, PM10, PM2.5-10 and PM2.5 were 245, 110, 64 and 46 μg/m3, respectively. About 34%, 15% and 56% of the monitored days had daily concentrations above the allowable limits for TSP, PM10 and PM2.5, respectively. Diurnal peak occurred at 14:00 for TSP, at 10:00 for PM10, and at 04:00 for PM2.5 reaching values of up to 410, 122, and 54 μg/m3, respectively. The highest concentrations were observed on Saturdays for TSP and PM10, but on Sundays for PM2.5. July had the greatest monthly level of PM compared to other months of this study. The average ratios of PM10/TSP, PM2.5/TSP and PM2.5/PM10 were 0.61, 0.31 and 0.47, respectively. Weak relationships were found between the particle number and mass concentrations, while very strong to moderate correlations were observed among all PM size fractions as well as between TSP and wind speed. The measurement results of the light scattering spectrometer were strongly correlated with the beta attenuation monitor, but the mean value of the spectrometer was higher by 18%.

The study was accomplished to identify the characteristics of village chickens’ (VCs) genetic resources in the abu-dhabi Emirate of United Arab Emirate (UAE) and to study factors affecting these characteristics. Each bird was individually observed, identified, measured and characterized of thirteen VCs pure breeds and crossbreds. The overall VCs had normal feather morphology (95.1%) and distribution (77%). Except for Fayomi chickens which were 100% mottled, no specific plumage pattern was found. Almost 52% of the VCs had white skins. Six different colors were reported for the shanks and maximized for white shanks (34.3%). Large breasts (46%) were more available. The predominant plumage color was mixed colors (37.5%). Face size tended to be small (42.8%) to medium (40.4%). More brown (48.9%) then orange (27.3%) eyes were found. Dark (49.7%) beaks were more available than white (28.6%) or yellow (21.7%) beaks. The distribution of wattle colors was similar to that of ear-lob colors with some variation. Small wattles (41.9%) were most available. Single comb (82.4%) is the most available;11 other types and one with no comb were represented with low frequencies. Power requirements in the city of Al Mirfa in western abu dhabi are covered by the Al Mirfa Power and Distillation Plant. Comprehensive emission inventories for 2007-2008 were used to execute an ENVIMAN (OPSIS AB Company, Sweden) Gaussian dispersion model to predict ambient ground level concentrations of nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), particulate matter (PM10) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) at selected receptors considering all emission sources located in the area. Two years of meteorological data was used in conjunction with the dispersion model to compute NOx and SO2 levels in and around the power plant. To validate the model, computed results were compared with the average values measured at a fixed Air Quality Station in Al Mirfa city. The highest hourly, daily and annual ground level concentrations under exiting meteorological conditions were then analyzed. The computed results for the study area revealed that daily, hourly and annual concentration values did not exceed the Federal Environment Agency (FEA) standard, and the contribution of plant emissions to the ground levels pollutants in the surrounded area range from 3.1 to 109 μg/m3 for NO2, and 1.1 to 41.4 μg/m3 for CO. This study can be considered a baseline study for any future expansion in the plant. Based on these results, mitigation strategies are not required.

From 2007-2009, National Energy and Water Research Center (NEWRC) on behalf of abu dhabi Water and Electricity authority (ADWEA) conducted a long term baseline study of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), ozone (O3) and particulate matter 2, SO2, and 8 hour average of CO were within the acceptable levels of 400, 300 and 30,000 μg/m3 respectively, whereas the levels of O3 as 8 hour average (3) and PM10 (3) occasionally exceeded the FEA permissible limits during the study period. Seasonal variation based on three years data reveals that the highest concentration of NO2 and SO2 were during winter and for CO and O3 during summer months. Results indicate that the levels of SO2 and CO were significantly controlled and improved while the fuel combustion of Al Mirfa power plant had increased from 2007 to 2009. Dust has significantly impact on the air quality by elevated levels of PM10 exceed in several instances associated with regional sand- storm during the monitoring period.

Physicians’ Perception of Drug Information Resources in the Emirate of abu dhabi-UAE

Objectives: To determine physicians’ preferences for different drug information resources in the United Arab Emirates. Methods: A questionnaire survey to determine preferences for different drug information resources was created and sent electronically from April 1 to May 13, 2012. A total of 3463 licensed physicians were identified from a comprehensive list of healthcare professionals provided by the health authority-abu dhabi Licensing Department. A total of 431 started the survey but only 372 physicians completed it entirely. Key Findings: Continuing medical education (46%) was ranked as the most favored source of information, followed by drug information references (28%), diagnosis/patient information (20%), and lastly peer-to-peer interactions (7%). Online sources of drug information were preferable (74%) to hardcopy (26%). A comparison of different physicians’ qualifications (consultant, specialist, and general practitioner) and number of references utilized for a particular topic (up to 3 resources versus 3 references or more) showed that their differences were statistically significant (p-value = 0.000). The most utilized sources of drug information by physicians was the British National Formulary (BNF), followed by Package Inserts, UpToDate, Drugs in Pregnancy & Lactation, Physicians’ Desk Reference, and Micromedex. When asked which drug information resource they would like to have access to, the majority of physicians choose the BNF, followed by UpToDate, MD Consult, Drugs in Pregnancy & Lactation, Micromedex, and Drugs Facts & Comparisons. Physicians from Europe/USA/Australia spent less time utilizing drug information resources (p-value of 0.013) compared to other nationalities. Conclusion: Preferences for different drug information resources did not vary significantly even amongst a diverse group of expatriate physicians licensed to practice in the United Arab Emirates.

The study was aimed to investigate the pathological changes of condemned lungs of dromedary camels in the Sudan abattoirs using conventional H & E and Zeihl Neelson (ZN) staining procedures. Proliferative granulomatous reaction was demonstrated in one H & E stained lung section which was characterized by focal fibrosis and infiltration of mononuclear cells resembled to tuberculous lesions. While ZN stained sections demonstrated acid fast rod in one pulmonary associated lymph node. These lesions were evidenced presence of tuberculous mycobacteria in camel tissues and recommended further deep investigation of tuberculosis among camels in the Sudan.

This paper studies electrical resistivity dataset acquired for a groundwater study in the Domail Plain in the northwestern Himalayan section of Pakistan. Through a combination of geostatistical analysis,geophysical inversion and visualization techniques,it is possible to re-model and visualize the single dimension resistivity data into 2D and 3D *** variogram models are utilized to extend the interpretation of the data and to distinguish individual lithologic units and the occurrence of saline water within the subsurface. The resistivity data has been calibrated with the lithological logs taken from the available boreholes. As such the alluvial system of the Domail Plain has formed during episodes of local tectonic activity with fluvial erosion and depositionyielding coarse sediments with high electrical resistivities near to the mountain ranges and finer sediments with medium to low electrical resistivities which tend to settle in the basin center. Thus a change is depositional setting happened from basin lacustrine environment to flash flooding during the Himalayan orogeny. The occurrence of rock salt in the northern mountains has imparted a great influence on the groundwater quality of the study area. The salt is dissolved by water which infiltrates into the subsurface through the water channels. Variogram aided gridding of resistivity data helps to identify the occurrence and distribution of saline water in the subsurface.

Changes in the sucrose metabolism of Cur-cuma longa *** were studied under treatment with different triazole compounds viz.,triadimefon(TDM)and propiconazole(PCZ).Plants were treated with TDM at 15mg/L and PCZ at 10mg/L separately by soil drenching on 80,110,and 140 days after planting(DAP).The plants were harvested randomly on 90,120,and 150DAP to determine the effect of both the triazoles on sucrose metabolizing enzymes and phenol *** sucrose metabolism was studied by analyzing sucrose metaboliz-ing enzymes like sucrose synthase and sucrose phosphate *** the analyses were assayed in leaves and tubers of both control and treated *** was found that both of the triazole compounds had profound effects on these parameters.
