Impact of inorganic and organic pollutants from a Belgian wastewater treatment plant on adjacent surface and groundwaters

Under the pressure of global droughts and water shortage,it is essential to evolve toward a sustainable and robust water *** possible avenue is the maximum reuse of treated wastewater,but the quality of which determines its ***,inorganic(Cd,Pb,Cr,Ni,Cu,and As)and organic(xenoestrogens and polycyclic aromatic contaminants,PACs)contaminants were monthly monitored in an effluent of the wastewater treatment plant(WWTP),the surrounding surface waters and the local groundwater in *** and particulate concentrations of inorganic contaminants in these water bodies were *** addition,Diffusive Gradients in Thin-films(DGT)was used in situ to obtain bioavailable metal *** the WWTP effluent and surface waters,only Ni exceeds the Annual Average-Environmental Quality Standard(AA-EQS),while in the groundwater,dissolved As was the predominant ***,in the surface and effluent waters the highest lability degrees were observed for Cd and *** concentrations of these metal species in the effluent water were lower than in the other water ***-organic pollutants,xenoestrogens and PACs were analyzed by dual Estrogen and Aryl hydrocarbon Receptor-Chemical Activated LUciferase gene eXpression(ER&AhR-CALUX)*** the annual averaged(AA)bioequivalent concentration of E2(0.18 ng/L)is below the AA-EQS standard(0.4 ng/L),and the bioequivalent concentration of benzo[a]pyrene never exceeded the maximum admissible concentration(MAC),the reclamation and reuse of treated wastewater for groundwater replenishment and agricultural irrigation should pose no environmental problems,at least in a short-term.

A detailed rock density model of the hong Kong territories

We used the geological map and published rock density measurements to compile the digital rock density model for the hong Kong *** then estimated the average density for the whole *** to our result,the rock density values in hong Kong vary from 2101 to 2681 kg·m^(-3).These density values are typically smaller than the average density of 2670 kg·m^(-3),often adopted to represent the average density of the upper continental crust in physical geodesy and gravimetric geophysics *** finding reflects that the geological configuration in hong Kong is mainly formed by light volcanic formations and lava flows with overlying sedimentary deposits at many locations,while the percentage of heavier metamorphic rocks is very low(less than 1%).This product will improve the accuracy of a detailed geoid model and orthometric heights.

The effect of topographic density variations on the geoid and orthometric heights in hong Kong

Utilizing the adopted average topographic density of 2670 kg/m3in the reduction of gravity anomalies introduces errors attributed to topographic density variations, which consequently affect geoid modeling accuracy. Furthermore, the mean gravity along the plumbline within the topography in the definition of helmert orthometric heights is computed approximately by applying the Poincar e-Prey gravity reduction where the topographic density variations are disregarded. The helmert orthometric heights of benchmarks are then affected by errors. These errors could be random or systematic depending on the specific geological setting of the region where the leveling network is physically established and/or the geoid model is determined. An example of systematic errors in orthometric heights can be given for large regions characterized by sediment or volcanic deposits, the density of which is substantially lower than the adopted topographic density used in helmert's definition of heights. The same applies to geoid modeling errors. In this study, we investigate these errors in the hong Kong territory, where topographic density is about 20% lower than the density of 2670 kg/m3. We use the digital rock density model to estimate the effect of topographic density variations on the geoid and orthometric heights. our results show that this effect on the geoid and helmert orthometric heights reach maxima of about 2.1 and 0.5 cm, respectively. Both results provide clear evidence that rock density models are essential in physical geodesy applications involving gravimetric geoid modeling and orthometric height determination despite some criticism that could be raised regarding the reliability of these density models. however, in regions dominated by sedimentary and igneous rocks, the geological information is essential in these applications because topographic densities are substantially lower than the average density of 2670 kg/m3, thus introducing large systematic errors in geoid and

There are abundant igneous gas reservoirs in the South China Sea with significant value of research,and lithology classification,mineral analysis and porosity inversion are important links in reservoir ***,affected by the diverse lithology,complicated mineral and widespread alteration,conventional logging lithology classification and mineral inversion become considerably *** the same time,owing to the limitation of the wireline log response equation,the quantity and accuracy of minerals can hardly meet the exploration requirements of igneous *** overcome those issues,this study takes the South China Sea as an example,and combines multi-scale data such as micro rock slices,petrophysical experiments,wireline log and element cutting log to establish a set of joint inversion methods for minerals and porosity of altered igneous ***,we define the lithology and mineral characteristics through core slices and mineral data,and establish an igneous multi-mineral volumetric *** we determine element cutting log correction method based on core element data,and combine wireline log and corrected element cutting log to perform the lithology classification and joint inversion of minerals and ***,it is always difficult to determine the elemental eigenvalues of different minerals in *** paper uses multiple linear regression methods to solve this ***,an integrated inversion technique for altered igneous formations was *** results show that the corrected element cutting log are in good agreement with the core element data,and the mineral and porosity results obtained from the joint inversion based on the wireline log and corrected element cutting log are also in good agreement with the core data from X-ray *** results demonstrate that the inversion technique is applicable and this study provides a new direction for the mineral inversion research of altered igneous formation

Assessment of SoilGrids data for soil erosion estimation at watershed scale:A case study in northern Thailand

Soil erosion has been identified as one of the most destructive forms of land degradation, posing a threat to the sustainability of global economic, social and environmental systems. This underscores the need for sustainable land management that takes erosion control and prevention into consideration. This requires the use of state-of-the-art erosion prediction models. The models often require extensive input of detailed spatial and temporal data, some of which are not readily available in many developing countries, particularly detailed soil data. The soil dataset Global Gridded Soil Information(SoilGrids) could potentially fill the data gap. Nevertheless, its value and accuracy for soil erosion modelling in the humid tropics is still unknown, necessitating the need to assess its value vis-à-vis field-based data. The major objective of this study was to conduct a comparative assessment of the value of SoilGrids and field-based soil data for estimating soil loss. Soil samples were collected from five physiographic positions(summit, shoulder, back slope, foot slope, and toe slope) using the soil catena approach. Samples were collected using a 5-cm steel sample ring(undisturbed) and a spade(disturbed). Data of the landform, predominant vegetation types, canopy cover, average plant height, land use, soil depth, shear strength, and soil color were recorded for each site. The soil samples were subjected to laboratory analysis for saturated hydraulic conductivity, bulk density, particle size distribution, and organic matter content. Pedotransfer functions were applied on the SoilGrids and field-based data to generate soil hydrological properties. The resultant field-based data were compared with the SoilGrids data for corresponding points/areas to determine the potential similarities of the two datasets. Pedestrian positioning system(PPS)using wearable inertial sensors has wide applications towards various emerging fields such as smart healthcare,emergency rescue,soldier positioning,*** performance of traditional PPS is limited by the cumulative error of inertial sensors,complex motion modes of pedestrians,and the low robustness of the multi-sensor collaboration *** paper presents a hybrid pedestrian positioning system using the combination of wearable inertial sensors and ultrasonic ranging(h-PPS).A robust two nodes integration structure is developed to adaptively combine the motion data acquired from the single waist-mounted and foot-mounted node,and enhanced by a novel ellipsoid constraint *** addition,a deep-learning-based walking speed estimator is proposed by considering all the motion features provided by different nodes,which effectively reduces the cumulative error originating from inertial ***,a comprehensive data and model dual-driven model is presented to effectively combine the motion data provided by different sensor nodes and walking speed estimator,and multi-level constraints are extracted to further improve the performance of the overall *** results indicate that the proposed h-PPS significantly improves the performance of the single PPS and outperforms existing algorithms in accuracy index under complex indoor scenarios.

A Low Earth orbit(LEo)constellation augmenting satellite navigation is important in the future development of Global Navigation Satellite System(GNSS).GNSS augmented by LEo constellations can improve not only the accuracy of Positioning,Navigation,and Timing(PNT),but also the consistency and reliability of secure PNT *** paper mainly analyzes the diverse demands of different PNT users for LEo augmented GNSS,including the precision demand in real-time,the availability demand in special areas,the navigation signal enhancement demand in complex electromagnetic environments,and the integrity demand with high ***,the possible contributions of LEo constellations to PNT performance are analyzed from multiple aspects.A particular attention is paid to the special PNT user requirements that cannot be fulfilled with existing GNSS,such as the PNT service demand in the polar regions and the onboard GNSS orbit determination demand of some LEo *** key technologies to be considered in the constellation design,function realization,and payload development of the LEo-augmented navigation system are summarized.

Investigating the reactivation of historical landslides during the 2022 Luding M_(S)6.8 earthquake

on September 5,2022,a strong earthquake with a magnitude of MS6.8 struck Luding County in Sichuan Province,China,triggering thousands of landslides along the Dadu River in the northwest-southeast(NW-SE)*** investigated the reactivation characteristics of historical landslides within the epicentral area of the Luding earthquake to identify the initiation mechanism of earthquake-induced *** of the two newly triggered and historical landslides were analyzed using manual and threshold methods;the spatial distribution of landslides was assessed in relation to topographical and geological factors using remote sensing *** study sheds light on the spatial distribution patterns of landslides,especially those that occur above historical landslide *** results revealed a similarity in the spatial distribution trends between historical landslides and new ones induced by *** landslides tend to be concentrated within a range of 0.2 km from the river and 2 km from the ***,both rivers and faults predominantly influenced the reactivation of historical ***,the reactivated landslides are characterized by their small to medium size and are predominantly situated in historical landslide *** number of reactivated landslides surpassed that of previously documented historical landslides within the study *** provide insights into the critical factors responsible for historical landslides during the 2022 Luding earthquake,thereby enhancing our understanding of the potential implications for future co-seismic hazard assessments and mitigation strategies.

Distribution law and susceptibility of geohazards across a gradient belt of the Western Sichuan Plateau

Across a gradient belt of the Western Sichuan Plateau,geohazards have seriously limited economic and social *** to incomplete statistics,15,673 geohazards have been recorded in the study *** order to mitigate the threat of geohazards to human engineering activities in the region,an overall understanding of the distribution pattern of geohazards and susceptibility assessment are *** this paper,a gradient belt of the Western Sichuan Plateau and its zoning criteria were ***,on the basis of relief amplitude,distance to faults,rainfall,and human activities,three indicators of endogenic process were introduced:Bouguer gravity anomaly gradient,vertical deformation gradient,and horizontal deformation ***,the distribution patterns of geohazards were investigated through mathematical statistics and ArcGIS *** randomly selecting 10,449 hazards,a geohazard susceptibility map was generated using the Information Value(IV)***,the IV model was validated against 5224 hazards using the Area Under Curve(AUC)*** results show that 47.6%of the geohazards were distributed in the zone of steep *** showed strong responses to distance to faults,human activities,and annual *** distribution of geohazards in the gradient belt of the Western Sichuan Plateau is more sensitive to vertical internal dynamics factors(such as vertical deformation gradient and Bouguer gravity anomaly gradient)without any apparent sensitivity to horizontal internal dynamics *** areas of high and very-high risk account for up to 32.22%,mainly distributed in the Longmenshan and Anning River *** to the AUC plot,the success rate of the IV model for generating the susceptibility map is 76%.This susceptibility map and geohazard distribution pattern can provide a reference for geological disaster monitoring,preparation of post-disaster emergency measures,and town planning.
