Artificial ground freezing of underground mines in cold regions using thermosyphons with air insulation

Current practice of underground artificial ground freezing(AGF)typically involves huge refrigeration systems of large economic and environmental *** this study,a novel AGF technique is proposed deploying available cold wind in cold *** is achieved by a static heat transfer device called thermosyphon equipped with an air insulation layer.A refrigeration unit can be optionally integrated to meet additional cooling *** introduction of air insulation isolates the thermosyphon from ground zones where freezing is not needed,resulting in:(1)steering the cooling resources(cold wind or refrigeration)towards zones of interest;and(2)minimizing refrigeration *** design is demonstrated using well-validated mathematical models from our previous work based on two-phase enthalpy method of the ground coupled with a thermal resistance network for the *** Canadian mines are considered:the Cigar Lake Mine and the Giant *** results show that our proposed design can speed the freezing time by 30%at the Giant Mine and by two months at the Cigar Lake ***,a cooling load of 2.4 GWh can be saved at the Cigar Lake ***,this study provides mining practitioners with sustainable solutions of underground AGF.

Divergent contributions of spring and autumn photosynthetic phenology to seasonal carbon uptake of subtropical vegetation in China

phenological changes play a central role in regulating seasonal variation in the ecological processes,exerting significant impacts on hydrologic and nutrient cycles,and ultimately influencing ecosystem functioning such as carbon ***,the potential impact mechanisms of phenological events on seasonal carbon dynamics in subtropical regions are *** knowledge gaps hinder from accurately linking photosynthetic phenology and carbon sequestration *** chlorophyll fluorescence remote sensing and productivity data from 2000 to 2019,we found that an advancement in spring phenology increased spring gross(Gpp)and net primary productivity(Npp)in subtropical vegetation of China by 2.1 gC m^(-2)yr^(-1)and 1.4 gC m^(-2)yr^(-1),respectively.A delay in autumn phenology increased the autumnal Gpp and Npp by 0.4 gC m^(-2)yr^(-1)and 0.2 gC m^(-2)yr^(-1),***,the contribution of the spring phenology to spring carbon uptake increased significantly during the study period,while this positive contribution showed a nonsignificant trend in *** comparison,the later autumn phenology could significantly contribute to the increase in autumnal carbon uptake;however,this contributing effect was *** analysis indicated that these phenomena have been caused by the increased leaf area and enhanced photosynthesis due to earlier spring and later autumn phenology,*** results demonstrate the diverse impacts of vegetation phenology on the seasonal carbon sequestration ability and it is imperative to consider such asymmetric effects when modeling ecosystem processes parameterized under future climate change.

Accuracy of tree mapping based on hand-held laser scanning comparing leaf-on and leaf-off conditions in mixed forests

The use of mobile laser scanning to survey forest ecosystems is a promising,scalable technology to describe forest 3D structures at high *** confirm the con-sistency in the retrieval of forest structural parameters using hand-held laser scanning(hLS),before operationalizing the method,confirming the data is *** analyzed the per-formance of tree-level mapping based on hLS under differ-ent phenology conditions on a mixed forest in western Spain comprising pinus pinaster and two deciduous species,Alnus glutinosa and Quercus *** area was surveyed twice during the growing season(July 2022)and once in the deciduous season(February 2022)using several scan-ning *** reference data(418 trees,15 snags)was used to calibrate the hLS data and to assess the influence of phenology when converting 3D data into tree-level attrib-utes(DBh,height and volume).The hLS-based workflow was robust at isolating tree positions and recognizing stems despite changes in ***-six percent of all pairs matched below 65 *** DBh,phenology barely altered *** observed a strong agreement when comparing hLS-based tree height *** values exceeded 2 m when comparing height measurements,confirming height data should be carefully used as reference in remote sensing-based inventories,especially for deciduous *** volume was more precise for pines(r=0.95,and rela-tive RMSE=21.3–23.8%)compared to deciduous species(r=0.91–0.96,and relative RMSE=27.3–30.5%).hLS data and the forest structural complexity tool performed remark-ably,especially in tree positioning considering mixed forests and mixed phenology conditions.

Carbon stock estimation in halophytic wooded savannas of Uruguay:An ecosystem approach

Savannas constitute a mixture of trees and shrub patches with a more continuous herbaceous *** contribution of this biome to the soil organic carbon(SOC)and above-ground biomass(AGB)carbon(C)stock globally is ***,they are frequently subjected to land use changes,promoting increases in CO_(2) *** Uruguay,subtropical wooded savannas cover around 100,000 ha,of which approximately 28%is circumscribed to sodic soils(i.e.,subtropical halophytic wooded savannas).Nevertheless,there is little background about the contribution of each ecosystem component to the C stock as well as site-specific allometric *** study was conducted in 5 ha of subtropical halophytic wooded savannas of the national protected area Esteros y Algarrobales del Rio *** work aimed to estimate the contribution of the main ecosystem components(e.g.,soil,trees,shrubs,and herbaceous plants)to the C ***-specific allometric equations for the most frequent tree species and shrub genus were fitted based on basal diameter(BD)and total height(h).The fitted equations accounted for between 77%and 98%of the aerial biomass variance of Netuma affinis and Vachellia *** shrubs(Baccharis sp.),the adjusted equation accounted for 86%of total aerial biomass.C stock for the entire system was 116.71±11.07 Mg·ha^(-1),of which 90.7%was allocated in the soil,8.3%in the trees,0.8%in the herbaceous plants,and 0.2%in the *** results highlight the importance of subtropical halophytic wooded savannas as C sinks and their relevance in the mitigation of global warming under a climate change scenario.
