Factors associated with cervical cancer knowledge and practice among Bahraini women

The study was conducted to assess the women’s knowledge and attitude towards cervical cancer and cervical cancer screening,to support the health education programs in this field.A total sample of 350 women(n = 350 ),70 women from each health center was chosen based on a multistage sampling technique according to a number of 21 health centers that serve the *** health center from each government was selected based on the population it serves,thus the health center with the highest population number was *** main tool of data collection was a face to face interview *** assessing the knowledge,attitude, and practice(KAP) of our sample,we observed that approximately equal percentages(70%) of women have heard of both Pap smear and cervical *** 47.4%had ever had Pap smear and of those 35.1% had it during a period of 5 years or *** main source of knowledge for those who have done the procedure is the family physician(30.8%).When asked about the reason behind having a Pap smear,the majority (62.3%) had it during postnatal ***,those that didnt have it,almost half(46.6%) disapproved to do so because they are healthy even after being told that Pap smear is a painless significant procedure. In conclusion,majority of respondents have a good knowledge about cervical cancer but is not reflected in their *** results strongly recommend continued health education for the women which can be achieved through the introduction of this topic into the schools’curriculum and planning educational programs within antenatal and postnatal visits.

Epidemiology of hepatitis E virus in Iran

Iran is known as an endemic country for hepatitis E virus(HEV) infection, while there are variations in the epidemiology of HEV infection throughout the country. The available epidemiological studies in different regions of Iran show HEV seroprevalence of 1.1%-14.2% among general population, 4.5%-14.3% among blood donors, 6.1%-22.8% among injecting drug users, 6.3%-28.3% among hemodialysis patients, 1.6%-11.3% among patients infected with other hepatitis viruses, 27.5% among patients with chronic liver disease, 30.8% among kidney transplant recipient patients, and 10%-16.4% among human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients. These variations reflect differences in the status of public health and hygiene, risk factors, and routes of transmission in different regions and groups. Therefore, it is necessary to review the epidemiology of HEV infection to determine the most prevalent risk factors and routes of transmission, and to evaluate the effectiveness of preventive strategies employed in the public health services of the country. Moreover, the other epidemiological aspects of HEV, including the genotypic pattern, extra hepatic manifestations, and incidence of chronic infection need to be investigated among Iranian population to expand the current knowledge on the epidemiology of HEV and to clarify the real burden of HEV infection. Therefore, this review was performed to provide a general overview regarding the epidemiology of HEV in Iran.

Numerical investigation of flow pattern and components of three-dimensional velocity around a submerged T-shaped spur dike in a 90° bend

Spur dike is one of the river training structures. This work presented a numerical simulation of flow field and three-dimensional velocity around a T-shaped spur dike located in bend using SSIIM model. The main objective of this work is to investigate the three-dimensional velocities and streamlines at transverse and longitudinal sections and plan views around the T-shaped spur dike in different submergence ratios(0, 5%, 15%, 25% and 50%). It is concluded that by increasing the submergence ratio from 5% to 50%, the maximum of scour is reduced; the maximum of longitudinal velocity increases by 7.7% and occurs at the water surface in spur dike axis. Near the bed, the maximum of vertical velocity occurs at the end of spur wing. By analyzing the streamlines at transverse sections, the followings were deduced for different submergence ratios: different dimensions and different positions of vortices around the spur dike.

Study of different features offission dynamics of ^(224)Th produced in fusion reactions within a stochastic approach

The evaporation residue cross section anisotropy of the fission fragment angular distribution, pre-scission neutron multiplicity and the pre-saddle and post-saddle contributions of the pre-scission neutron multiplicity were analyzed within a stochastic approach based on one-, two- and three-dimensional Langevin equations for the compound nucleus ^224Th formed via a complete fusion. In these calculations, dissipation was generated through the chaos weighted wall and window friction formula. Comparison of the theoretical results with the experimental data showed that three-dimensional Langevin equations with dissipation generated through the chaos weighted wall and window friction formula make it possible to reproduce satisfactorily the above-mentioned experimental data.

Two-dimensional Langevin modeling of fission dynamics of the excited compound nuclei ^(188)Pt,^(227)Pa and ^(251)Es

A stochastic approach based on one-and two-dimensional Langevin equations is applied to calculate the pre-scission neutron multiplicity,fission probability,anisotropy of fission fragment angular distribution,fission cross section and the evaporation cross section for the compound nuclei ^188Pt,^227Pa and ^251Es in an intermediate range of excitation *** chaos weighted wall and window friction formula are used in the Langevin *** elongation parameter,c,is used as the first dimension and projection of the total spin of the compound nucleus onto the symmetry axis,K,considered as the second dimension in Langevin dynamical calculations.A constant dissipation coefficient of K,γk=0.077（MeV zs）^-1/2）,is used in two-dimensional calculations to reproduce the above mentioned experimental *** of the theoretical results of the pre-scission neutron multiplicity,fission probability,fission cross section and the evaporation cross section with the experimental data shows that the results of two-dimensional calculations are in better agreement with the experimental ***,it is shown that the two-dimensional Langevin equations together with a dissipation coefficient of K,γk=0.077（MeV zs）^-1/2,can satisfactorily reproduce the anisotropy of fission fragment angular distribution for the heavy compound nucleus^***,a larger value of γk=0.250（MeV zs）^-1/2is needed to reproduce the anisotropy of fission fragment angular distribution for the lighter compound nucleus^227Pa.

Lurking epidemic of hepatitis C virus infection in Iran: A call to action

Despite having a relatively low prevalence in the Iranian general population, the burden of hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection is on the rise, and hepatitis C is predicted to be the most important leading cause of viral hepatitis-related mortality in the near future in Iran. The recent population-based epidemiological studies have revealed the predominant role of injecting drug use in increasing prevalence of HCV infection. Undoubtedly, new management paradigm is required to drive down the rising wave of hepatitis C in Iran. Priority should be given to young injecting drug users as the cornerstone of the lurking epidemic of HCV infection in Iran.

The traditional thinking was that the biological functions of testosterone were restricted mainly to the area of reproduction and male sexuality. However, scientific research has clearly demonstrated that testosterone is a multi-system hormone serving a wide range of hitherto unsuspected biological functions.

Hepatitis C virus core protein modulates several signaling pathways involved in hepatocellular carcinoma

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is the fifth most common cancer, and hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection plays a major role in HCC development. The molecular mechanisms by which HCV infection leads to HCC are varied. HCV core protein is an important risk factor in HCV-associated liver pathogenesis and can modulate several signaling pathways involved in cell cycle regulation, cell growth promotion, cell proliferation, apoptosis, oxidative stress and lipid metabolism. The dysregulation of signaling pathways such as transforming growth factor β(TGF-β), vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF), Wnt/β-catenin(WNT), cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α(PPARα) by HCV core protein is implicated in the development of HCC. Therefore, it has been suggested that this protein be considered a favorable target for further studies in the development of HCC. In addition, considering the axial role of these signaling pathways in HCC, they are considered druggable targets for cancer therapy. Therefore, using strategies to limit the dysregulation effects of core protein on these signaling pathways seems necessary to prevent HCV-related HCC.
