Water quality analysis and source apportionment in estuaries along the coast of the Bohai Sea,North China

High-dimensional data(a dataset with many features)were collected from 64 sampling sites to analyze the water quality in estuaries along the coast of the Bohai Sea,North *** twenty-five water quality parameters analyzed were collected monthly from January 2021 to December *** statistical techniques,such as the absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression model(APCS-MLR),correlation analysis,and analysis of variance were used to identify and quantify the potential sources or factors affecting water quality and to analyze the spatial-temporal variation in water *** water quality indices(WQIs),ranging from 67.96 to 70.67,showed that the water quality was at an intermediate level in the estuaries during both the flood and nonflood *** concentrations of total phosphorus(TP),ammonia N(AN),and organic pollutants were greater in the Haihe River Basin than in the Liaohe River and Huanghe-Huaihe River *** concentration of total nitrogen(TN)in the Haihe River Basin was lower than that in the Liaohe River and Huanghe-Huaihe River *** metal concentrations in the Liaohe River Basin were greater than those in the Haihe River and Huanghe-Huaihe River *** annual mean concentrations of AN in the estuaries of the Haihe,Liaohe,and Huanghe(Yellow)rivers exhibited significant decreasing trends from 2013 to 2022,but no significant decreasing trends were found for permanganate index(COD_(Mn))or the *** concentrations of TN and AN were lower in the flood season than in the nonflood season,and the TP concentration was greater in the flood season than in the nonflood ***,the concentrations of organic pollutants did not exhibit significant *** sewage and industrial wastewater,substance exchange between air and water,nonpoint sources from rural and urban areas,and aquaculture wastewater were the major sources or factors responsible for water pollution in the estuaries.

Biomineralization has garnered significant attention in the field of wastewater treatment due to its notable cost reduction compared to conventional *** reinjection water from oilfields containing an exceedingly high concentration of calcium and ferric ions will pose amajor hazard in ***,the utilization of biomineralization for precipitating these ions has been scarcely investigated due to limited tolerance among halophiles towards such extreme *** this study,free and immobilized halophiles Virgibacillus dokdonensis were used to precipitate these ions and the effects were compared,at the same time,biomineralizationmechanisms and mineral characteristicswere further *** results showthat bacterial concentration and carbonic anhydrase activitywere higher when additionally adding ferric ion based on calcium ion;the content of protein,polysaccharides,deoxyribonucleic acid and humic substances in the extracellular polymers also increased compared to *** ions were biomineralized into calcite and vaterite with mul-tiple *** to iron doping,the crystallinity and thermal stability of calcium carbonate decreased,the content of O-C=O,N-C=OandC-O-PO_(3) increased,the stable carbon isotope values became much more negative,andβ-sheet in minerals *** calcium concentrations facilitated ferric ion precipitation,while ferric ions hindered calcium *** immobilized bacteria performed better in ferric ion removal,with a precipitation ratio exceeding 90%.Free bacteria performed better in calcium removal,and the precipitation ratio reached a maximum of 56%.This research maybe provides some reference for the co-removal of calcium and ferric ions from the oilfield wastewater.

The advancement of direct seawater electrolysis is a significant step towards sustainable hydrogen production,addressing the critical need for renewable energy sources and efficient resource ***,direct seawater electrolysis has to face several challenges posed by the corrosiveness of highly concentrated chloride and the competitive chlorine evolution reaction(ClER).To overcome these issues,we designed a novel NiP_(2)@CoP electrocatalyst on a porous titanium microfiltration(Ti MF)*** obtained bifunctional NiP_(2)@CoP catalyst outperforms the Pt/C and IrO_(2),as evidenced by its low overpotentials of 192 and 425 mV at a current density of 500 mA·cm^(-2) for hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)and oxygen evolution reaction(OER)in alkaline seawater(1 M KOH+0.5 M NaCl),***,only 231 and 569 mV overpotentials are required at the current density of 1500 mA·cm^(-2) towards HER and OER in alkaline seawater,*** importantly,no ClER was observed,demonstrating its excellent selectivity to *** selection of porous Ti MF membrane as an electrode substrate further enhances the performance by providing a robust structure that promotes the fast generation and release of gas *** promising outcomes obtained with NiP_(2)@CoP catalysts on Ti MF support,therefore,pave the way for the commercial viability of direct seawater electrolysis technologies at industrial-level current densities.

Identifying Clusters of Reproductive-Age Women Not Screened for Cervical and Breast Cancer in Ghana

Purpose: There is a significant rise in mortality rates from breast and cervical cancers in Low- and Middle-Income Countries. In Ghana, approximately 4482 women are diagnosed with these diseases at advanced stages. Unfortunately, the early detection rate for these cancers is low compared to other women’s health services. This situation underscores the need to identify the locations of reproductive-age women who have not been screened for these cancers, to implement targeted public health interventions. This study aims to pinpoint these women’s locations for tailored interventions. Method: Bivariate analysis assessed the relationship between the independent and outcome variables. Hot spot analysis and Kriging Ordinary interpolation were employed to pinpoint the locations of these women. Results: Breast cancer examination and cervical cancer test rates were low, with a strong association between the two screening services. Several significant variables were identified: place of residence (p Conclusion: Low participation in these screening services was related to women’s age and the outreach efforts of fieldworkers. Breast and cervical cancer screenings are interconnected and could be combined to improve attendance rates. The Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) implementation strategy could be cost-effective for screening women through targeted interventions, especially in identified clusters.

Root system architecture and its scaling relationships of Reaumuria soongorica in Alxa steppe desert,Northwest China

Root system architecture has often been overlooked in plant research despite its critical role in plant adaptation to environmental *** study focused on the root system architecture of the desert shrub Reaumuria soongorica in the Alxa steppe desert,Northwest *** samples were collected during May-September *** excavation methods,in situ measurements,and root scanning techniques,we analyzed the root distribution,topology,and branching patterns of *** across an age sequence of 7-51 ***,we investigated the allometric relationships of root collar diameter with total coarse root length,biomass,and topological *** results showed that the roots of *** were predominantly concentrated in shallow soil layers(10-50 cm),with lateral root branching and biomass allocation increasing with shrub *** root topology exhibited a herringbone-like structure,with average topological and modified topological indices of 0.89 and 0.96,respectively,both of which adjusted with shrub *** root system displayed a self-similar branching pattern,maintaining a constant cross-sectional area ratio of 1.13 before and after branching,deviating from the area-preserving *** adaptive traits allow *** to efficiently expand its nutrient acquisition zone,minimize internal competition,and optimize resource uptake from the upper soil ***,significant linear relationships were observed between log10-transformed root collar diameter and log10-transformed total coarse root length,biomass,and topological *** findings advance non-destructive approaches for studying root characteristics and contribute to the development of root-related ***,this study provides new insights into the adaptive strategies of *** under extreme drought conditions,offering valuable guidance for species selection and cultivation in desert restoration efforts.

Changes in heavy metal contents in animal feeds and manures in an intensive animal production region of China

The 360 feed and manure samples were collected from 150 animal farms in Jiangsu Province, China and analyzed for heavy metals. Concentrations of Zn and Cu in animal feeds were 15.9-2041.8 and undetected-392.1 mg/kg respectively, while Hg, As, Pb, Cd, and Cr in all feeds were below 10 mg/kg. Concentrations of Cu, Zn, and Cr in animal manures were 8.4-1726, 39.5-11379, and 1.0-1602 mg/kg respectively, while As, Cd, Hg, and Pb were 〈 10 mg/kg. The concentration of Cu, Zn, As and Cr in animal feed and manure were positively correlated （p 〈 0.001）, but the Cd, Hg, and Pb were not statistically correlated between the feed and the manure. Concentrations of Cu and Zn were highest in pig feed and manure, followed by poultry and dairy feeds and manures. During 1990- 2008, Cu, Zn, As, Cr, Cd contents increased by 771%, 410%, 420%, 220%, and 63% in pig manure, 212%, 95%, 200%, 791%, and -63% in dairy manure, and 181%, 197%, 1500%, 261, and 196% in poultry manure. Most of the increases occurred from 2002 to 2008, which reflects the extensive use of feed additives after 2002. In contrast, Pb and Hg in manures continuously decreased from 1990 to 2008. The results suggest that the heavy metal contents in animal manure have been greatly increased over 18 years and the contribution of manures to soil should be considered.

Identification,protection and restoration of spawning habitats are vital for protecting the depleted *** horseshoe crabs are ecologically important macroinvertebrates in coastal and estuarine ***,their spawning habitat studies were limited to several reports in tropical regions,possibly due to the lack of modified survey methods,particularly in habitats with a lower density of spawning adults,and/or intermingled with anthropogenic *** this study,the year-round egg distribution and spawning habitat baselines of Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda and Tachypleus tridentatus were determined in the northern Beibu gulf,*** findings demonstrated that the peak spawning occurred in June–July and ceased in November–January when the average water temperature dropped below 20℃.Egg aggregations were found<10 cm beneath the sediment surface with regular tidal inundation,regardless of seasonal changes,in the vicinity of natural and artificial structures with elevated,mildly sloping substratum within the high tide *** nests were characterized by medium-sized sediment grains(0.5–0.9 mm),high temperatures(31–34℃),low water contents(0.8%–0.9%),and total organic carbon contents(0.5%–0.7%),which might maximize the hatching *** identified nesting beaches were close to nursery habitats for juveniles,and tidal creeks were present as the possible corridor connecting these two important habitats through the dominant mangrove *** findings provide valuable insights in the scope of spawning behavior and nest-site selection of Asian horseshoe crabs under a mixture of natural and artificial structures,which could benefit future management efforts for the exploited spawning populations.

The horizontal structure of mangrove forests is an important characteristic that reflects a significant signal for coupling between mangroves and external *** the loss and gain of mangroves has received much attention,little information about how the horizontal structure of mangrove forests develops from the seedling stage to maturity has been ***,remote sensing images taken over approximately 15 years,UVA images,nutrient elements,sediments,and Aegiceras corniculatum vegetation parameters of the ecological quadrats along the Nanliu Delta,the largest delta of the northern Beibu gulf in China,are analyzed to reveal changes in the horizontal structure of mangroves and their associated driving *** results show that both discrete structures and agglomerated structures can often be found in *** seedlings and ***,the combination of seedlings growing into maturity and new seedlings filling in available gaps causes the discrete structure of *** to gradually vanish and the agglomerate structure to become *** aggregated structure of seedlings,compared to the discrete structure,can enhance the elevation beneath mangroves by trapping significantly more sediments,providing available spaces and conditions for seedlings to continue ***,by catching fine sediments with enriched nutrients,the survival rate of *** seedlings in the agglomerated structure can be much higher than that in the discrete *** results highlight the significance of the agglomeration of ***,which can be beneficial to coastal mangrove restoration and management.

RNA interference reveals chloride channel 7 gene helps short-term hypersalinity stress resistance in Hong Kong oyster Crassostrea hongkongensis

The chloride channel 7 gene(CLC 7)of the Hong Kong oyster Crassostrea hongkongensis was cloned and named ChCLC *** cDNA was 2572 bp in length,with a 5′non-coding region containing 25 bp,a 3′non-coding region containing 327 bp,and an open reading frame of 2298 *** 7 has 96.8%and 92.1%homology with CLC 7 of Crassostrea gigas and Crassostrea virginica,respectively,and it was clustered with CLC 7 of *** and ***-PCR showed that ChCLC 7 was expressed in all eight tissues,with the highest in adductor muscle and second in *** ChCLC 7 expression pattern in gill was altered significantly under high salinity stress with an overall upward and then downward *** RNA interference,the expression of ChCLC 7 and survival rate of oyster under high salinity stress was reduced significantly,and so did the concentration of hemolymph chloride ion in 48-96 h after RNA *** believed that ChCLC 7 could play an important role in osmoregulation of *** by regulating Cl^(-)*** study provided data for the analysis of molecular mechanism against oyster salinity stress.

Asian Horseshoe Crab Bycatch in Intertidal Zones of the Northern Beibu gulf:Suggestions for Conservation Management

Bycatch poses a severe challenge to global fishery *** studies have focused on marine megafauna bycatch,research on relevant issues regarding invertebrates is limited,particularly for the threatened horseshoe *** this study,the distribution of fishing gears and the bycatch intensity of Asian horseshoe crabs in the intertidal zones of the northern Beibu gulf that harbors the most abundant juvenile Asian horseshoe crabs populations in China were *** intertidal nursery habitats for Tachypleus tridentatus and Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda were surveyed from May to July in 2021.A transect that crossed the tidal creeks and tidal flats between the high tide embankment/vegetation and low tide line of a given habitat was surveyed during the ebb *** type,number,and GPS of fishing gears were recorded when sighted,and the number and prosomal width of each horseshoe crab species were *** intensities differed among habitats,ranging from 0.3 to 18.4 and 1.2 to 22.7 individuals per kilometer of transect for *** and ***,*** the three identified fishing gear types,ground cages and stick net sets caused a stronger bycatch pressure on these two *** *** bycatch and *** bycatch were large individuals in late juvenile and adult ***,the ground cages and stick net sets along/near the tidal creeks,mangrove fringe,and low tide line should be regulated and removed to ensure the functionality of the intertidal zone as the spawning corridor and nursery habitat of Asian horseshoe crabs.
