Post-rifting magmatism at the northern margin of the South China Sea:Evidenced by an ocean bottom seismometer experiment

Magmatism at continental margins is of great significance in understanding the continental *** present a twodimensional P-wave velocity model derived from an ocean bottom seismometer experiment,conducted across the middle northern continental margin of the South China Sea(SCS).The detailed velocity structures reveal significant heterogeneities extending from the continental shelf to the continent-ocean transition *** crust exhibits its greatest thickness below the continental shelf,measuring~23 km and gradually thins to~13 km at the distal ***,a narrow and distinct continent-ocean transition with only 40-km width is *** also observe a high-velocity layer within the transition zone,reaching thickness of up to 4 km,characterized by P-wave velocities ranging from 7.0 km/s to 7.6 km/s in the lower *** on the syn-rift melt generation using decompression melting model,we ascertain that syn-rift magmatism cannot fully account for the observed thick high-velocity *** integrating findings from previous geophysical and geochemical studies presenting extensive volcanic edifice on the seafloor at the northern margin,as well as ocean-island-basalt-type magmaticsamples in the SCS area,we propose that post-rifting magmatism associated with the Hainan Plume may have influenced theformation of the high-velocity lower crust within the transition zone and the northern margin of the SCS can thus be recognizedas magma-poor type margin.

Carboniferous Arc Setting in Central Hainan: Geochronological and Geochemical Evidences on the Andesitic and Dacitic Rocks

Volcanic rocks in the Bangxi-Chenxing tectonic zone provide important carries for better understanding the Late Paleozoic tectonic evolution in Hainan and its temporal-spatial pattern of the eastern Paleotethyan evolution. This paper presents a set of new geochronological and geochemical data on the andesitic and dacitic rocks along the Bangxi-Chenxing tectonic zone in central Hainan. The rep- resentative andesitic and dacitic samples yield similar zircon U-Pb ages of 353^-3 and 351^-7 Ma, respec- tively, being of Early Carboniferous origin. These volcanic rocks are characterized by low TiO2 and high A1203 contents and are enriched in LILEs and LREEs but depletion in HFSEs, along with negative fNd（t） Values of =1.4-- -4.7 and high STSr/S6Sr（i） ratios of 0.707 2-0.710 1. Geochemical signatures suggest that the andesitic and dacitic samples might originate from a metasomatized wedge modified by the slab-derived component in a continental arc setting. In combination with the available data, it is pro- posed for the development of a Carboniferous continental arc in response to the eastern Paleotethyan evolution. The Bangxi-Chenxing tectonic zone might westerly link with the Jinshajiang-Ailaoshan-Song Ma suture zone, constituting an assemblage boundary between the South China and Indochina blocks.

Low temperature thermochronology plays a key role in the study of the tectonic evolution of the upper *** modeling of apatite fission-track requires the apparent age and the confined track-length distribution of spontaneous *** length data does not require either thermal neutron irradiation or LA-ICP-MS measurements of the uranium content of the *** paper attempts to decouple the apatite fission-track age from the apatite fission-track length,but to combine the fission-track lengths with the respective apatite U-Th/He age to model the thermal *** experiments were designed and conducted using a new Mathematica®modeling software“Low-T Thermo”.Results of this modeling show that the thermal history modeling of apatite U-Th/He and fission-track ages can constrain the apatite fission-track length thermal history in the He partial retention zone and fission-track partial annealing zone,*** implies that this combination of apatite fissiontrack length and apatite U-Th/He age has not been implemented before but is presented here as an alternative way of determining thermal histories without the addition of apatite fission-track age.

Influences of different modifiers on the disintegration of improved granite residual soil under wet and dry cycles

The disintegration of granite residual soil is especially affected by variations in physical and chemical properties. Serious geologic hazards or engineering problems are closely related to the disintegration of granite residual soil in certain areas. Research on the mechanical properties and controlling mechanisms of disintegration has become a hot issue in practical engineering. In this paper, the disintegration characteristics of improved granite residual soil are studied by using a wet and dry cycle disintegration instrument, and the improvement mechanism is analyzed. The results show that the disintegration amounts and disintegration ratios of soil samples treated with different curing agents are obviously different. The disintegration process of improved granite residual soil can be roughly divided into 5 stages:the forcible water intrusion stage, microcrack and fissure development stage, curing and strengthening stage, stable stage, and sudden disintegration stage. The disintegration of granite residual soil is caused by the weakening of the cementation between soil particles under the action of water. When the disintegration force is greater than the anti-disintegration force of soil, the soil will disintegrate. Cement and lime mainly rely on ion exchange agglomeration, the inclusion effect of curing agents on soil particles, the hard coagulation reaction and carbonation to strengthen granite residual soil. Kaolinite mainly depends on the reversibility of its own cementation to improve and strengthen granite residual soil. The reversibility of kaolinite cementation is verified by investigating pure kaolinite with a tensile, soaking, drying and tensile test cycle. Research on the disintegration characteristics and disintegration mechanism of improved granite residual soil is of certain reference value for soil modification.

A combined geophysical and lithological study on eruptive history and Quaternary lacustrine stratigraphy of a maar in Leizhou Peninsula, China

As the second common type of volcanic vent on Earth, maar-diatreme volcanoes and their post-eruptive lacustrine sediments are a main focus of volcanology, palaeolimnology, palaeoclimatology and palaeontology. A number of maar-type volcanoes have been found in Leizhou Peninsula, South China, but little is known about their eruption processes and detailed stratigraphy of the post-eruptive sediments. We present a combined geophysical and geological analysis to study the eruptive history and post-eruptive sediment stratigraphy of a large maar, the elliptical(1.8 × 3.0 km^(2)) Jiudouyang(JDY) maar. The lacustrine stratigraphy revealed by drilling cores shows that the JDY maar lake has three major stages of evolution:(i) deep-lake sedimentary environment characterized by high autochthonous diatom productivity;(ii) shallow lake to swamp with very low water levels, characterized by a high total organic carbon(TOC) and abundant wood fragments;and,(iii) intermittent shallow lake and alluvial deposits composed of clay minerals and sand. The electrical resistivity tomography(ERT) values and lithological features are highly consistent, which clearly reveal the presence of ca. 50 m thick lacustrine sediments, directly underlain by a ca. 70 m thick basaltic lava rather than diatreme breccia in the crater. This infill sequence implies an alternation of eruption style from phreatomagmatic to Strombolian and/or lava flow, due to high magma flux and ascent rate of the Hainan Plume during the middle Pleistocene. The ERT data also reveal the initial phreatomagmatic crater floor at ca. 120 m depth. The initial crater had a large diameter/depth ratio(ca. 17), with an elongated shape(major axis to minor axis = 0.6), implying possible lateral vent migration during the eruption. A significant erosion under tropical weathering condition during the last few hundred thousand years, accounted for the large size of the maar crater. Multiple-point statistics(MPS)is a useful approach to reconstruct three-dimensional models in the macroscopic or microscopic *** spatial features for three-dimensional reconstruction from two-dimensional training images(TIs),and characterizing non-stationary features with directional ductility are two key issues in MPS *** study presents a step-wise MPS-based three-dimensional structures reconstruction algorithm with the sequential process and hierarchical strategy based on two-dimensional *** extension method is proposed to construct three-dimensional *** a sequential simulation process,an initial guess at the coarsest scale is simulated,in which hierarchical strategy is used according to the characteristics of *** obtain a more refined realization,an expectation-maximization like iterative process with global optimization is implemented.A concrete example of chondrite micro-structure simulation,in which one scanning electron microscopy(SEM)image of the Heyetang meteorite is used as TI,shows that the presented algorithm can simulate complex non-stationary structures.

Co- and post-seismic slip analysis of the 2017 M_(W)7.3 Sarpol Zahab earthquake using Sentinel-1 data

The M_(w)7.3 Sarpol Zahab earthquake that occurred in the Zagros Fold-Thrust Belt(ZFTB) of Iran on November 12,2017 is the largest earthquake instrumentally recorded in the *** earthquake provides an opportunity to investigate the slip behaviour and frictional properties of the fault,which is significant for assessing future seismic *** this study,we use Sentinel-1 images to map the coand post-seismic deformation to invert for the fault *** result indicates that most of the coseismic slip is buried in the depth range of 11-17 km,and the maximum slip is about 3.8 m at a depth of 15 *** coseismic slip induces an increase of Coulomb stress in the unruptured area of the seismogenic fault plane,driving the *** on the stress-driven afterslip,we obtain a frictional parameter of(ab)=(0.001-0.002) for the updip afterslip zone and(a-b)=0.0002 for the downdip afterslip zone in the framework of rate-and-state *** constitutive parameter(a-b) of the fault is very small,suggesting that the fault segments are close to velocity-neutral and may experience coseismic rupture.

Dynamic stress accumulation model of granite residual soil under cyclic loading based on small-size creep tests

The creep behaviors of granite residual soil with pre-stress of 100 kPa was investigated by a series of small size creep tests. Three different types of strain curves were obtained at different stress levels. Based on creep characteristics of the granite residual soil under different stress levels, a creep model of the granite residual soil was established by rheological theory, and related parameters of the model were determined according to the experimental data at the same time. Further on, based on the established creep model, a theoretical model of dynamic stress accumulation in the granite residual soil under cyclic loading was deduced. It is found that there is a threshold of dynamic stress accumulation in this theoretical model. The dynamic stress accumulation laws of the granite residual soil are different under different cyclic loading stress. Finally, with the dynamic stress accumulation laws in the small-size samples of granite residual soil under different cycle loading studied and the experimental results comparing with the theoretical results, it verifies the validity of the theoretical model.

Remnants of the amalgamation of the east and west Cathaysia blocks revealed by a short-period dense nodal array

The Cathaysia block located at the southeast South China block(SCB)is considered formed by the amalgamation of the east and west Cathaysia blocks along the Gaoyao-Huilai and Zhenghe-Dapu deep faults(here referred as GHF and ZDF,respectively).Although the extension of the ZDF to the northeast,which represents the amalgamation of the two sub-blocks has been confirmed,the development of the GHF to the southwest remains to be *** better constrain the detailed deep structure beneath the southwest Cathaysia,which hold great significance for revealing the evolution of the SCB,a linear seismic array with 331 nodal geophones was deployed across the Sanshui basin(SSB).Combining with the regional 10 permanent stations(PA),we obtained two profiles with teleseismic P-wave receiver function *** most obvious feature in our results is the ascending Moho towards the coastal area,which is consistent with the passive margin continental and extensional tectonic *** stacking profile from the dense nodal array(DNA)shows that the Moho is offset beneath the transition zone of the Nanling orogeny and *** deduce that this offset may be casued by the deep extension of the GHF,which represents the remnants of the amalgamation of the Cathaysia *** the other evidences,we infer that the widespread and early erupted felsic magmas in the SSB may have resulted from lithospheric materials that were squeezed out to the *** relative higher Bouguer gravity and heat flow support the consolidation of magmas and the residual warm state in the shallow crustal scale beneath the *** sporadic basaltic magmas in the middle SSB may have a close relation to deep extension of the GHF,which serves as a channel for upwelling hot materials.
