Hawthorn Extract Alleviates Atherosclerosis through Regulating Inflammation and Apoptosis Related Factors: An Experimental Study

Objective: To determine the effects of hawthorn extract on serum lipid levels, pathological changes in aortic atherosclerosis plaque, inflammatory factors, and apoptosis-related protein and mRNA expression in apolipoprotein E gene knockout(ApoE^(-/-)) mice. Methods: Thirty-six ApoE^(-/-) mice were fed with a high-fat diet starting at the age of 8 weeks. Mice were randomly divided into 3 groups by a random number table including model group, hawthorn extract group, and simvastatin group, 12 mice in each group. Twelve 8-week-old C57BL/6 mice were fed a basic diet and served as control. The mice in the control and model groups were administered 0.2 mL saline daily, the mice in the hawthorn extract and simvastatin groups were administered with 50 mg/kg hawthorn extract or 5 mg/kg simvastatin daily for 16 weeks. After 16 weeks, plasma lipids including total cholesterol(TC), triglyceride(TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C) were determined by an enzymatic assay. Aortic atherosclerotic lesions were observed by light microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. Plasma levels of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1(MCP-1), interleukin-1β(IL-1β), adiponectin(APN), and hypersensitive C-reactive protein(hs-CRP) were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA). Protein and mRNA expressions of Bax and Bcl-2 in the aorta were assessed by Western blotting and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction(qR T-PCR), respectively. Results: Compared to the control group, the plasma levels of TC, TG and LDL-C were significantly increased and HDL-C were significantly decreased in the model group(Pment with hawthorn extract significantly decreased the plasma levels of TC, TG, and LDL-C and increased the plasma level of HDL-C in ApoE^(-/-)mice(P<0.01). OBJECTIVE: To observe the efficacy and safety of different dosages of modified Zhibaidihuang decoction(MZBDD) on polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS) hyperandrogenism(HA) ***: Ninety PCOS HA patients and 30 infertile patients due to tubal factor were selected. Ninety PCOS HA patients were randomly divided into three groups: low dosage group(LDG), medium dosage group(MDG) and high dosage group(HDG) and infertile patients were selected as normal control group(NCG). PCOS HA patients were treated with different dosage of MZBDD for 4 weeks. For HA patients, serum total testosterone(T), estrodial(E2), follicle stimulating hormone(FSH), luteinizing hormone(LH), prolatin(PRL), alanine aminotransferase(AST), aspartate amino transferase(AST) were determined before and after treatment, while acne scores(Rosenfield) were signed. Basal body temperatures(BBT) were asked to be measured every day. And for the else, T, E2,FSH, LH, PRL, AST, and AST were determined before ***: Totally 111 patients completed the clinical research. There were no differences among the four groups on serum T before treatment(P =0.221). Serum T concentration of both MDG and HDG after treatment significantly were lower than that of before treatment(P = 0.039, P = 0.000),while there was no obvious difference in LDG(P =0.829). Serum T concentration of both MDG and HDG were significantly lower than that of LDG after treatment(P = 0.048, P = 0.006). To compared with before treatment, there were no differences in Serum FSH, LH, E2, P and PRL among the three groups(LDG, MDG, HDG)(as for FSH, P = 0.136, P = 0.503,P = 0.062; as for LH, P = 0.473, P = 0.513, P = 0.096;as for E2, P = 0.206, P = 0.927, P = 0.076; as for PRL,P = 0.120, P = 0.903, P = 0.407, as for P, P = 0.308, P =0.866, P = 0480). Acne scores of all the three groups were obviously lower than that of before treatment(P = 0.031; P = 0.033; P = 0.002). 39.5% of the patients had biphasic BBT, but there were no differences among the

The authors summarized the application of traditional Chinese medicine to the management of hepatic cancerous pain in Beijing and Shanghai, and in Jiangsu and Zhejiang Provinces. The therapeutic principle was to invigorate blood circulation and reduce stasis and to soothe the liver and regulate qi, so as to dredge the channels and collaterals. The results were satis-factory.

The free radical mechanism of enhancing radiosensibility by the Synergic Recipe to Strengthen Body Resistance (SRSBR) consisting of 10 Chinese drugs was studied by elec-tron spin resonance (ESR) with spin trapping reagent-Nitroso-tert-butane (NtB) follow-ing irradiation of the Deoxy thymidine (dT) solution system by 60Co 3.7 PBq. The results showed SRSBR cannot only enhance the generation of e - aq but also enhance the produc-tion of · OH and H · after irradiation with γ ray in dT-NtB-SRSBR aqueous solution system. These result in damage to biological molecules, attacking and killing tumor cells radiosensitized by SRSBR. The characteristics of SRSBR for radiosensitization are con-cluded to be increasing production of · OH and H · in comparison with the well-known radiosensitizer-Misonidazole (Miso).

30 cases of chronic cor pulmonale with acute exacerbation were treated with Fei Xin Ling Syrup compared with 30 similar cases treated with Western modern drugs as controls. The Chinese herbal drug modality was found to be superior to the administration of modern drugs in the control group in overall therapeutic effects, with regard to the symptoms of coughing, tachypnea, phlegm production, edema, and the prevention of heart and respiratory failure. Rheological studies in part of the patients also indicated that the Chinese herbal prescription improved the blood circulation.

Liver cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality *** resonance imaging(MRI) is a non-invasive imaging technique that is often used by radiologists for diagnosis and surgical *** of a large amount of liver MRI data for each patient limits the radiologist's efficiency and may lead to *** redundant MRI data,especially from dynamic contrast enhanced(DCE) sequences,is also a bottleneck in transmitting the images via the internet or PACS for remote consultancy in a reasonable amount of *** study included 25 patients(aged between 20 and 70years) with liver cysts(seven cases),hemangiomas(eight cases),or hepatic cell carcinomas(10 cases).DCE T1 WI MRI was performed for all the *** diagnosis reference included typical MRI findings and post-surgery *** methods were as follows:(i) MRI sequence pre-processing based on large vessels variation level set method to remove non-liver parts from MRI images;(ii) human visual model features(luminance,motion,and contour) extraction and fusion;(iii) anomaly-based MRI ranking;and(iv) methods assessment with the 25 patients' DCE MRI *** prioritization methods applied to the DCE images could automatically assimilate and determine the content of the medical images,identifying the liver cysts,hemangiomas,and *** average uniformity between radiologists and prioritization with the proposed method was 0.805,0.838,and0.818 for cysts,hemangiomas,and carcinomas,respectively,which indicates that the proposed method is an efficient method for liver DCE image prioritization.
