The ballan wrasse(Labrus bergylta)is a marine fish belonging to the family Labridae characterized by 2 main morphotypes that occur in sympatry:spotty and *** studies have revealed differences in their life-history traits,such as growth and maturation;however,the genetic relationship between forms is presently *** 20 recently developed microsatellite markers,we conducted a genetic analysis of 41 and 48 spotty and plain ballan wrasse collected in Galicia(northwest Spain).The 2 morphotypes displayed highly significant genetic differences to each other(F_(ST)=0.018,P<0.0001).A similar degree of genetic differentiation(F_(ST)=0.025,P<0.0001)was shown using the STRUCTURE clustering approach with no priors at K=*** this case,the frequency of spotty and plain morphotypes was significantly different(χ^(2)=9.46,P=0.002).It is concluded that there is significant genetic heterogeneity within this species,which appears to be highly associated with the spotty and plain forms,but not completely explained by *** the previously demonstrated biological differences between morphotypes,and the present genetic analyses,we speculate about the convenience of a taxonomic re-evaluation of this species.

Aims Clonal growth is associated with invasiveness in introduced plant species,but few studies have compared invasive and noninvasive introduced clonal species to investigate which clonal traits may underlie *** test the hypothesis that greater capacity to increase clonal growth via physiological integration of connected ramets increases invasiveness in clonal plants,we compared the effects of severing connections on accumulation of mass in the two species of the creeping,succulent,perennial,herbaceous genus Carpobrotus that have been introduced on sand dunes along the Pacific Coast of northern California,the highly invasive species Carpobrotus edulis and the co-occurring,noninvasive species Carpobrotus *** Pairs of ramets from four mixed populations of the species from California were grown in a common garden for 3 months with and without severing the stem connecting the *** simulate the effect of clones on soils in natural populations,the older ramet was grown in sand amended with potting compost and the younger in sand *** Findings Severance decreased net growth in mass by~60%in *** and~100%in ***,due mainly to the negative effect of severance on the shoot mass of the younger ramet within a *** to the hypothesis,this suggests that physiological integration increases growth more in the less invasive ***,severance also decreased allocation of mass to roots in the older ramet and increased it in the younger ramet in a pair,and the effect on the younger ramet was about twice as great in *** as in *** indicates that the more invasive species shows greater phenotypic plasticity in response to physiological integration,in particular greater capacity for division of *** could contribute to greater long-term growth and suggests that the division of labor may be a trait that underlies the association between clonal growth and invasiveness in plants.

Zinc oxide crystal containing intrinsic oxygen vacancy defect as well as codoped with Mn and Co impurities is studied using density functional theory （DFT） calculations. An intra-atomic interaction term for the strongly correlated d-electrons by an unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation （DFT＋U method） is introduced to more precisely describe the system under study. The electronic and magnetic properties are investigated and discussed in detail. In particular, it is found that relative defect positions might influence the outcome if the material exhibits or not the n-type electrical conductivity.

Objective To evaluate the spermicidal activity of Passiflora edulis extract on human spermatozoa. Methods Human spermatozoa were incubated with P. edulis extracts and their motility and viability were evaluated; additionally, the cytotoxic effect of the extracts was evaluated by the tetrazolium bromide （MTT） reduction assay. Results The motility and viability were decreased immediately after treatment with a 21% dilution of the supernatant of the extract of P. edulis （P〈0.01）. No cytatoxic effect of the extracts studied was found on proliferation of MDBK and VERO cells. Conclusion These results may open the way for the use of P. edulis as a spermicidal product with less adverse effects.

Aims One of the key traits associated with clonal growth in plants is the capacity for physiological integration,which allows resource sharing between connected ramets within a clonal *** transport is expected to occur following a source–sink relationship:from ramets established in rich patches to ramets growing in poor ***,some experiments have shown that acropetal transport(from basal to apical modules)usually exceeds basipetal transport(from apical to basal ramets).In this study,we aimed to determine the resource transport directionality in physiologically integrated modules of the invader Carpobrotus *** We conducted two manipulative experiments under common garden conditions that studied the effect of different nutrient levels located at different positions(basal,medial and apical)on connected and disconnected clonal systems of *** compared the biomass partitioning patterns and final biomass of ramets to elucidate whether the effect of physiological integration is affected by the directionality of the resource *** Findings Results indicate a prevalent acropetal transport of resources in ***,with a developmentally programmed division of labor where basal ramets were specialized in obtaining soil-based resources and apical ramets specialized in aboveground *** biomass partitioning pattern was not affected by the nutrient conditions in which basal or apical ramets were growing,although the highest benefit was achieved by apical ramets growing under the most stressed *** developmentally programmed division of labor is expected to increase the lateral growth of ***,and therefore could have meaningful implications for the expansion of this invasive species.

Current approaches for simulating the energy performance of buildings on a large scale are limited by numerous assumptions and simplifications,which can lead to inaccurate *** new tools and procedures are emerging to improve accuracy,there remains a need for more user-friendly *** study proposes a new tool based on online maps to create the geometry of districts in a simple *** tool also enables an automatic evaluation of all buildings through dynamic hourly simulations,using a building simulation software and allowing to consider different weather *** illustrate the procedure,a district at risk of energy poverty in Seville(Spain)is modeled,where hourly temperature data for a whole year are available to demonstrate the need for building *** tool is used to evaluate the energy demands of the district under several retrofitting alternatives,and free-floating simulations are also performed to evaluate the improvement of thermal comfort without air-conditioning *** aim is not to discuss the actual values for this particular case,but rather to identify the correct direction for large-scale studies,so as to make them more easily ***,it may be concluded that the results provided by comprehensive tools,such as the one proposed in this study,enable easy yet accurate evaluations of buildings on a large scale with significant time savings,as well as the identification of locations where retrofitting interventions would have the greatest impact.

Olfactory ensheathing glia promote axonal regeneration in the mammalian central nervous system,including retinal ganglion cell axonal growth through the injured optic ***,it is unknown whether olfactory ensheathing glia also have neuroprotective *** ensheathing glia express brain-derived neurotrophic factor,one of the best neuroprotectants for axotomized retinal ganglion ***,we aimed to investigate the neuroprotective capacity of olfactory ensheating glia after optic nerve *** ensheathing glia cells from an established rat immortalized clonal cell line,TEG3,were intravitreally injected in intact and axotomized retinas in syngeneic and allogeneic mode with or without microglial inhibition or immunosuppressive *** and gene expression analyses were *** bulb-derived primary olfactory ensheathing glia and TEG3 express major histocompatibility complex classⅡ*** and syngenically transplanted TEG3 cells survived in the vitreous for up to 21 days,forming an *** axotomized retinas,only the allogeneic TEG3 transplant rescued retinal ganglion cells at 7 days but not at 21 *** these retinas,microglial anatomical activation was higher than after optic nerve crush *** intact retinas,both transplants activated microglial cells and caused retinal ganglion cell death at 21 days,a loss that was higher after allotransplantation,triggered by pyroptosis and partially rescued by microglial inhibition or ***,neuroprotection of axotomized retinal ganglion cells did not improve with these *** different neuroprotective properties,different toxic effects,and different responses to microglial inhibitory treatments of olfactory ensheathing glia in the retina depending on the type of transplant highlight the importance of thorough preclinical studies to explore these variables.

Structural Health Monitoring(SHM) suggests the use of machine learning algorithms with the aim of understanding specific behaviors in a structural system. This work introduces a pattern recognition methodology for operational condition clustering in a structure sample using the well known Density Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise(DBSCAN) *** methodology was validated using a data set from an experiment with 32 Fiber Bragg Gratings bonded to an aluminum beam placed in cantilever and submitted to cyclic bending loads under 13 different operational conditions(pitch angles). Further, the computational cost and precision of the machine learning pipeline called FA + GA-DBSCAN(which employs a combination of machine learning techniques including factor analysis for dimensionality reduction and a genetic algorithm for the automatic selection of initial parameters of DBSCAN) was measured. The obtained results have shown a good performance, detecting 12 of 13 operational conditions, with an overall precision over 90%.
