Traditional Chinese medicine extraction method by ethanol delivers drug-like molecules

Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)is an important reservoir for bioactive natural *** extraction methods by water decoction and wine tincture are an integral part of TCM and essential for their widely acknowledged *** this study,we selected 6 common TCMs that are rich in chemistry to investigate whether the TCM extraction methods deliver molecules with drug-like physical chemical *** TCM herbal materials were extracted by water,95%ethanol,and sequential hexane,d ichloromethane and *** extracts were analyzed by HPLC and^1H *** on one of the extracts yielded 32 compounds,their physical chemical properties were analyzed by Instant *** results showed that ethanol extraction,which mimics TCM wine tincture,delivered compounds with physical chemical properties compliant to Lipinski’s rule of 5.

Protein structure prediction has been a challenging problem for>60 years. Its progress has been considered incremental for the past 20 years until leaps were made by Alpha Fold that seemed to suddenly reach experimental accuracy. We argue that this unexpected success in 3D structure prediction was foreshadowed by prior advances in predicting 1D backbone structures and 2D side-chain distance maps in continuous angle and distance space as well as the embedding of these 1D and 2D features for end-to-end learning.

Efficacy of telemedicine on glycaemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes:A meta-analysis

BACKGROUND Telemedicine is defined as the delivery of health services via remote communication and *** is a convenient and cost-effective method of intervention,which has shown to be successful in improving glyceamic control for type 2 diabetes *** utility of a successful diabetes intervention is vital to reduce disease complications,hospital admissions and associated economic *** To evaluate the effects of telemedicine interventions on hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c),systolic blood pressure(SBP),diastolic blood pressure(DBP),body mass index(BMI),post-prandial glucose(PPG),fasting plasma glucose(FPG),weight,cholesterol,mental and physical quality of life(QoL)in patients with type 2 *** secondary aim of this study is to determine the effect of the following subgroups on HbA1c post-telemedicine intervention;telemedicine characteristics,patient characteristics and self-care *** PubMed Central,Cochrane Library,Embase and Scopus databases were searched from inception until 18th of June *** quality of the 43 included studies were assessed using the PEDro scale,and the random effects model was used to estimate outcomes and I2 for heterogeneity *** mean difference and standard deviation data were extracted for *** We found a significant reduction in HbA1c[-0.486%;95%confidence interval(CI)-0.561 to-0.410,P<0.001],DBP(-0.875 mmHg;95%CI-1.429 to-0.321,P<0.01),PPG(-1.458 mmol/L;95%CI-2.648 to-0.268,P<0.01),FPG(-0.577 mmol/L;95%CI-0.710 to-0.443,P<0.001),weight(-0.243 kg;95%CI-0.442 to-0.045,P<0.05),BMI(-0.304;95%CI-0.563 to-0.045,P<0.05),mental QoL(2.210;95%CI 0.053 to 4.367,P<0.05)and physical QoL(-1.312;95%CI 0.545 to 2.080,P<0.001)for patients following telemedicine interventions in comparison to control *** results of the meta-analysis did not show any significant reductions in SBP and cholesterol in the telemedicine interventions compared to the control *** telemedicine characteristic subgroup an

Removal of Heavy Metal Ions from Wastewater by Using Biosorbents from Marine Algae-A Cost Effective New Technology

Heavy metal pollution from industrial wastewater is a worldwide environmental issue. Biosorption of heavy metals by using biosorbents derived from various types of biomass has been shown to be effective for the uptake of heavy metal ions. In this study, biosorbents derived from the biomass of a group of marine macroalgae were used for the removal and recovery of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. Results indicated that the biosorbents have high uptake capacities and affinities for a number of heavy metal ions. The uptake capacities of the biosorbents were in the range of 1.0 to 1.5mmol·g-1 for divalent heavy metal ions. The kinetics of the uptake process was fast and the process can be used in both batch and fixed-bed operations. It appears that the biosorption process by using biosorbents from marine macroalgae can be an efficient and cost effective technology for the treatment of heavy metal containing wastewater.

SPOT-Disorder2: Improved Protein Intrinsic Disorder Prediction by Ensembled Deep Learning

Intrinsically disordered or unstructured proteins(or regions in proteins) have been found to be important in a wide range of biological functions and implicated in many diseases. Due to the high cost and low efficiency of experimental determination of intrinsic disorder and the exponential increase of unannotated protein sequences, developing complementary computational prediction methods has been an active area of research for several decades. Here, we employed an ensemble of deep Squeeze-and-Excitation residual inception and long short-term memory(LSTM) networks for predicting protein intrinsic disorder with input from evolutionary information and predicted one-dimensional structural properties. The method, called SPOT-Disorder2, offers substantial and consistent improvement not only over our previous technique based on LSTM networks alone,but also over other state-of-the-art techniques in three independent tests with different ratios of disordered to ordered amino acid residues, and for sequences with either rich or limited evolutionary information. More importantly, semi-disordered regions predicted in SPOT-Disorder2 are more accurate in identifying molecular recognition features(MoRFs) than methods directly designed for MoRFs prediction. Relationship between prospective memory and vigilance: Evidence from ERP

Event-related potentials (ERPs) were used in this study to investigate the neural correlates of prospective memory (PM) and vigilance. Twenty college or graduate students participated in this study. They were administered a PM and a vigilance task and physiological data were collected at the same time. Behavioral results showed that the RT associated with PM cues was longer than those associated with vigilance targets. ERP results showed that PM cues and vigilance targets did not show significant difference in the N2 but PM cues evoked greater N300 than vigilance targets, and vigilance targets evoked greater parietal positivity/P3 than PM cues, suggesting vigilance and PM have similar but also distinctive neural basis.

Physical and chemical processes promoting dominance of the toxic cyanobacterium Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii

The freshwater cyanobacterium, Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii （Woloszyflska） Seenayya and Subba Raju is a common species in lakes and reservoirs globally. In some areas of the world it can produce cytoand hepatotoxins （cylindrospermopsins, saxitoxins）, making blooms of this species a serious health concern for humans. In the last 10 15 years, there has been a considerable body of research conducted on the ecology, physiology and toxin production of this species and this paper reviews these studies with a focus on the cylindrospermopsin （CYN）-producing strains. C. raciborskii has low light requirements, close to neutral buoyancy, and a wide temperature tolerance, giving it the capacity to grow in many lentic waterbodies. It also has a flexible strategy with respect to nitrogen （N） utilisation; being able to switch between utilising fixed and atmospheric N as sources of N fluctuate. Additionally this species has a high phosphate （DIP） affinity and storage capacity. Like many cyanobacteria, it also has the capacity to use dissolved organic phosphorus （DOP）. Changes in nutrient concentrations, light levels and temperature have also been found to affect production of the toxin CYN by this species. However, optimal toxin production does not necessarily occur when growth rates are optimal. Additionally, different strains of C. raciborskii vary in their cell quota of CYN, making it difficult to predict toxin concentrations, based on C. raciborskii cell densities. In summary, the ecological flexibility of this organism means that controlling blooms of C. raciborskii is a difficult undertaking. However, improved understanding of factors promoting the species and toxin production by genetically capable strains will lead to improved predictive models of blooms.

α-Fe_2O_3 nanoplates with superior electrochemical performance for lithium-ion batteries

On account of the high theoretical capacity, high corrosion resistance, environmental benignity, abundant availability and low cost, the research on a-Fe_2O_3 has been gradually fastened on as promising anodes materials toward lithium-ion batteries(LIBs). A high-performance anode for LIBs based on α-Fe_2O_3 nanoplates have been selectively prepared. The α-Fe_2O_3 nanoplates can be synthesized with iron ionbased ionic liquid as iron source and template. The α-Fe_2O_3 nanoplates as the anode of LIBs can display high capacity of around1950 mAh g^(-1) at 0.5 A g^(-1) which have exceeded the theoretical capacity of α-Fe_2O_3. On account of unique nanoplate structures and gum arabic as binder, the α-Fe_2O_3 nanoplates also exhibit high rate capability and excellent cycling performance.

Cancer stem cells, stemness markers and selected drug targeting: metastatic colorectal cancer and cyclooxygenase-2/prostaglandin E2 connection to WNT as a model system

Few studies have reported on the analyses of drugs targeting enriched populations of cancer stem cells (CSCs) as a means for identifying potent anti-CSC agents. This review evaluates recent information on the identification and functions of specific CSC surface markers, with particular emphasis on colorectal cancers and the screening of drugs to eliminate such cells. Many of these CSC markers are found commonly expressed on CSCs from different cancer types as well as embryonic stem cells. These markers are often related to hypoxic activation of the WNT/b-catenin pathway, cyclooxygenase-2/prostaglandin E signalling and their relationship to LGR5. By effectively using drugs that inhibit these pathways to kill the CSC population, or otherwise forcing them out of dormancy into active cell division, cancers should become more susceptible to chemotherapy. Such combinational therapies targeting both CSCs and proliferating tumor cells should greatly improve upon the current basis for treatment.
