Geographical features and development models of estuarine cities

Cities are the key areas for human beings to achieve sustainable development goals in the future.Estuarine cities are a special type of coastal city in urgent need of a clear definition.This paper proposed that estuarine cities are cities developed on the coast where rivers and oceans meet and defined four connotations,including the intersection of rivers and marine water systems,the coordinated development of land and oceans,the location advantages of connecting rivers and seas,and the important fragility of the ecological environment.We used Hydro SHEDS,OSM,GPW,and urban socioeconomic statistics and selected 50 estuarine cities with large rivers as representatives to summarize the main geographical basis and socioeconomic characteristics.Cities are primarily found in low-altitude,flat regions with average annual temperatures that mainly vary from 10℃to 25℃,relatively abundant precipitation,and extensive biological resources.There are substantial variations in the socioeconomic features of estuarine cities.We proposed eight development patterns,including open and inclusive city spirit,high-quality livable cities,high-quality development driven by innovation,integration of internal and external communication with ports and cities,construction of an international financial center,ecological environment protection and restoration,active promotion of cultural tourism,and positive international exchanges.

Investigation of Ce/BEA as a passive NOx adsorber:1.The occurrences of cerium and adsorption behavior

Ce/BEA has great potential as a passive NOxabsorber（PNA） to reduce the NOxemissions during the cold start phase especially in diesel engine for its high resistance to CO and suitable NOxdesorption temperature range.However,as a novel material,its physical and chemical properties still remain unknown.In this work,Ce/BEA was synthesized by ion-exchange method to identify the active species in NOxadsorption,compared with aggregated Ce species in Ce/SiAlOxprepared by impregnation method.X-ray diffraction（XRD）,high resolution-transmission electron microscopy（HR-TEM） and aberration-correctedscanning transmission electron microscopy（AC-STEM） were performed to confirm the isolated single atom formation of Ce species in Ce/BEA.UV-vis diffraction reflection spectra（DRS） and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy（XPS） were conducted to find the difference of chemical environment between the isolated Ce species and aggregated ones.PNA performance evaluation and temperature programmed reduction of hydrogen（H2-TPR） results show the high NOxstorage capacity and active oxygen species quantity in Ce/BEA.It is also found that the main NOxadsorption species are Ce4+-O*rather than Ce3+.NOx-diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy（NOx-DRIFTS） confirms that the bidentate nitrite species are the critical NOxadsorption intermediates and the conception of NOxadsorption and desorption processes is proposed.

Experimental clearance rate and intraguild predation of jellyfish Cyanea nozakii

Cyanea nozakii,a common jellyfish distributed in offshore China,has a complex trophic relationship with other zooplankton groups.However,few studies have reported the predation rates and prey selection patterns of C.nozakii medusae on different prey items.research is also lacking on the intraguild predation of Aurelia coerulea(another common bloom jellyfish in offshore China)by C.nozakii.To address the knowledge gaps,the clearance rates of C.nozakii for different prey items,including copepods(small1000μm),fish larvae,and gelatinous prey(hydromedusae,A.coerulea ephyrae,and chaetognaths),were measured.The influence of predator size on the clearance rate was also determined.Additionally,we examined the intraguild predation of C.nozakii on A.coerulea medusae.The clearance rates of C.nozakii varied widely with prey organisms,being independent of prey concentrations.Gelatinous organisms,except for chaetognaths,were captured with considerably high efficiency,followed by fish larvae and copepods,indicating the preferential prey selection of gelatinous organisms by C.nozakii.The clearance rate increased linearly with the cross-sectional area of C.nozakii.Body size in medusae may,to some extents,underpin their capacity to capture more prey by increasing the encounter rate and capture success through ontogeny.C.nozakii preyed voraciously on A.coerulea in high feeding efficiency,but the clearance rate decreased with increasing A.coerulea(as prey)size.This phenomenon of intraguild predation suggests a speculative hypothesis of potential population regulation of A.coerulea by C.nozakii.The information regarding the feeding ecology of C.nozakii reported in this study is important for understanding plankton dynamics in marine ecosystems with extensive occurrences of this jellyfish.

High-Performance Recyclable Furan-based Epoxy Resin and Its Carbon Fiber Composites with Dense Hydrogen Bonding

The emerging biomass-based epoxy vitrimers hold great potential to fulfill the requirements for sustainable development of society.Since the existence of dynamic chemical bonds in vitrimers often reduces both the thermal and mechanical properties of epoxy resins, it is challenging to produce recyclable epoxy vitrimers with both excellent mechanical properties and good thermal stability. Herein, a monomer 4-(((5-(hydroxymethyl)furan-2-yl)methylene)amino)phenol(FCN) containing furan ring with potential to form high density of hydrogen bonding among repeating units is designed and copolymerized with glycerol triglycidyl ether to yield epoxy resin(FCN-GTE), which intrinsically has dual hydrogen bond networks, dynamic imine structure and resultant high performance. Importantly, as compared to the BPA-GTE, the FCN-GTE exhibits significantly improved mechanical properties owing to the increased density of hydrogen bond network and physical crosslinking interaction. Furthermore, density functional theory(DFT) calculation and in situ FTIR analysis is conducted to decipher the formation mechanism of hydrogen bond network. In addition, the FCN-GTE possesses superior UV shielding, chemical degradation, and recyclability because of the existence of abundant imine bonds. Notably, the FCN-GTE-based carbon fiber composites could be completely recycled in an amine solution.This study provides a facile strategy for synthesizing recyclable biomass-based high-performance epoxy vitrimers and carbon fiber composites.

A systematic scoping review of study methodology for randomized controlled trials investigating probiotics in athletic and physically active populations

Background:The purported ergogenic and health effects of probiotics have been a topic of great intrigue among researchers,practitioners,and the lay public alike.There has also been an increased research focus within the realm of sports science and exercise medicine on the athletic gut microbiota.However,compared to other ergogenic aids and dietary supplements,probiotics present unique study challenges.The objectives of this systematic scoping review were to identify and characterize study methodologies of randomized controlled trials investigating supplementation with probiotics in athletes and physically active individuals.Methods:Four databases(MEDLINE,CINAHL,Cochrane CENTRAL,and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews)were searched for randomized controlled studies involving healthy athletes or physically active individuals.An intervention with probiotics and inclusion of a control and/or placebo group were essential.Only peer-reviewed articles in English were considered,and there were no date restrictions.Results were extracted and presented in tabular form to detail study protocols,characteristics,and outcomes.Bias in randomized controlled trials was determined with the RoB 2.0 tool.Results:A total of 45 studies were included in the review,with 35 using a parallel group design and 10 using a cross-over design.Approximately half the studies used a single probiotic and the other half a multi-strain preparation.The probiotic dose ranged from 2×10^(8)to 1×10^(11)colony forming units daily,and the length of intervention was between 7 and 150 days.Fewer than half the studies directly assessed gastrointestinal symptoms,gut permeability,or the gut microbiota.The sex ratio of participants was heavily weighted toward males,and only 3 studies exclusively investigated females.Low-level adverse events were reported in only 2 studies,although the methodology of reporting varied widely.The risk of bias was generally low,although details on randomization were lacking in some studies.Conclusion:There is a substantial body of

Multi-area Frequency-constrained Unit Commitment for Power Systems with High Penetration of Renewable Energy Sources and Induction Machine Load

The increasing penetration of renewable energy sources(RESs) brings great challenges to the frequency security of power systems. The traditional frequency-constrained unit commitment(FCUC) analyzes frequency by simplifying the average system frequency and ignoring numerous induction machines(IMs) in load, which may underestimate the risk and increase the operational cost. In this paper, we consider a multiarea frequency response(MAFR) model to capture the frequency dynamics in the unit scheduling problem, in which regional frequency security and the inertia of IM load are modeled with high-dimension differential algebraic equations. A multi-area FCUC(MFCUC) is formulated as mixed-integer nonlinear programming(MINLP) on the basis of the MAFR model. Then, we develop a multi-direction decomposition algorithm to solve the MFCUC efficiently. The original MINLP is decomposed into a master problem and subproblems. The subproblems check the nonlinear frequency dynamics and generate linear optimization cuts for the master problem to improve the frequency security in its optimal solution. Case studies on the modified IEEE 39-bus system and IEEE 118-bus system show a great reduction in operational costs. Moreover, simulation results verify the ability of the proposed MAFR model to reflect regional frequency security and the available inertia of IMs in unit scheduling.

Spatio-temporal variation of water salinity in mangroves revealed by continuous monitoring and its relationship to floristic diversity

Salinity is among the most critical factors limiting the growth and species distribution of coastal plants.Water salinity in estuarine ecosystems varies temporally and spatially,but the variation patterns across different time scales and salinity fluctuation have rarely been quantified.The effects of salinity on floristic diversity in mangroves are not fully understood due to the temporal and spatial heterogeneity of salinity.In this study,we monitored water salinity at an interval of 10-min over one year in three mangrove catchment areas representing the outer part,middle part,and inner part respectively of Dongzhai bay,Hainan,China.The number of mangrove community types and dominant mangrove species of the three catchment areas were also investigated.We found that the diurnal variation and dry-season intra-month variation in water salinity were driven by tidal cycles.The seasonal variation in water salinity was mainly driven by rainfall with higher salinity occurring in the dry season and lower salinity occurring in the wet season.Spatially,water salinity was highest at the outer part,intermediate at the middle part,and lowest at the inner part of the bay.The intra-month and annual fluctuations of water salinity were highest at the middle part and lowest at the outer part of the bay.The number of mangrove community types and dominant species were lowest at the outer part,intermediate at the middle part,and highest at the inner part of the bay.These results suggest that the temporal variation of water salinity in mangroves is driven by different factors at different time scales and therefore it is necessary to measure water salinity at different time scales to get a complete picture of the saline environment that mangroves experience.Spatially,lower salinity levels benefit mangrove species richness within a bay landscape,however,further research is needed to distinguish the effects of salinity fluctuation and salinity level in affecting mangrove species richness.

Hyperuricemia(HUA)is a vital risk factor for chronic kidney diseases(CKD)and development of functional foods capable of protecting CKD is of importance.This paper aimed to explore the amelioration effects and mechanism of Andrias davidianus bone peptides(ADBP)on HUA-induced kidney damage.In the present study,we generated the standard ADBP which contained high hydrophobic amino acid and low molecular peptide contents.In vitro results found that ADBP protected uric acid(UA)-induced HK-2 cells from damage by modulating urate transporters and antioxidant defense.In vivo results indicated that ADBP effectively ameliorated renal injury in HUA-induced CKD mice,evidenced by a remarkable decrease in serum UA,creatinine and blood urea nitrogen,improving kidney UA excretion,antioxidant defense and histological kidney deterioration.Metabolomic analysis highlighted 14 metabolites that could be selected as potential biomarkers and attributed to the amelioration effects of ADBP on CKD mice kidney dysfunction.Intriguingly,ADBP restored the gut microbiome homeostasis in CKD mice,especially with respect to the elevated helpful microbial abundance,and the decreased harmful bacterial abundance.This study demonstrated that ADBP displayed great nephroprotective effects,and has great promise as a food or functional food ingredient for the prevention and treatment of HUA-induced CKD.

Large-area ultrastrong and stiff aramid nanofiber based layered nanocomposite films

One-dimensional(1D)aramid nanofiber(ANF)based nanocomposite films have drawn increasing attentions in various applications due to their excellent mechanical properties and impressive chemical and thermal stabilities.However,the large-area fabrication of aramid nanocomposite films with ultrastrong mechanical properties under mild conditions remains a great challenge.Here we present a facile superspreading-assisted strategy to produce aramid nanofiber based oriented layered nanocomposites using phase inversion process that occurs at the fully swollen hydrogel surfaces.The nanocomposite films based on ANF,carboxylation carbon tube(CNT–COOH),poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA),and MXene nanosheet exhibit a tensile strength of up to 870.8±85 MPa,a Young’s modulus of 21.8±2.2 GPa,and outstanding toughness(up to 43.2±4.6 MJ/m^(3)),which are much better than those conventional aramid nanofiber based materials.Electrical conductivity of our nanocomposite films reaches the maximum of about 1100 S/m.The fabulous mechanical properties combination and continuous production capability render our strategy representing a promising direction for the development of high-performance nanocomposites.
