In Brazil, the amount of pesticides consumed doubled in the last 10 years. Thus, in 2008 it assumed the lead position in the world. However, its indiscriminate application in agriculture without the use of the necessary care has contributed to environmental degradation and increased occupational exposures, making it a serious health problem in the country. The recent study looked to evaluate the auditory health and risk factors in rural workers exposed to pesticides in Piedade de Caratinga County—MG, and chart their socioeconomic profile and lifestyle while identifying the types of crops and the use and management of pesticides. Developed, then, a descriptive and exploratory study involving 23 men, rural workers, exposed to pesticides, with no history of exposure to noise, with changes in meatoscopy and aged ≤50 years of age. The results show the sample consisted of 23 men with a mean age of 36.7 ± 9.3, whom have low education, with a monthly income of 1 minimum wage, working in the fields for over 15 years. There was a predominance of horticulture using organophosphate pesticides and pyrethroids. Part of the sample shows auditory loss, the most common sensorineural conductive loss. It is essential that the population exposed to this type of risk is informed and receives guidance from educational campaigns developed by the multidisciplinary team of basic health units.

Effects of Mirror Therapy on the upper Limb Functionality:A study on the perception of Occupational Therapists

Study about Top-Down and Bottom-Up Controls in Regulating the Phytoplankton Biomass in a Eutrophic Reservoir in Northeastern Brazil

This study aims to analyze the effects of nutrients and predation by zooplankton on phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) in a eutrophic reservoir in Brazil (Apipucos Reservoir, State of Pernambuco), through experiments in microcosms. For this, samples of water were placed in 1 L Erlenmeyer flasks and kept for seven days. Treatments included the addition of nutrients (nitrogen combined with phosphorus and isolated additions of nitrogen and phosphorus), with presence and absence of zooplankton and a control which contained the reservoir water without any manipulation. The addition of nutrients did not stimulate phytoplankton growth. However, zooplankton significantly decreased phytoplankton biomass in the treatments it was added to (p < 0.05). The results of this study showed that for the reservoir studied, predation by zooplankton is the most significant factor in the regulation of phytoplankton, contradicting several studies which show that phytoplankton biomass is more strongly controlled by nutrients (bottom-up control) than by predation (top-down control).

Incorporation of integrative medicine education into undergraduate medical education:a longitudinal study

OBJECTIVE： Integrative medicine （IM） combines complementary medical approaches into conventional medicine and considers the whole person. We implemented a longitudinal IM short-course curriculum into our medical school education. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of the curriculum via knowledge and attitude surveys regarding IM among students. METHODS： A mandatory short IM curriculum across all years of medical school was created and taught by IM professionals and physician faculty members with expertise in integrative therapies. graduating classes of 2015 and 2016 completed the same survey in their first and third years of medical school. Paired data analysis was done, and only students who completed surveys at both time points were included in final analyses. RESULTS： Of 52 students in each class, 17 （33%） in the class of 2015 and 22 （42%） in the class of 2016 completed both surveys. After the IM curriculum, students＇ knowledge of and comfort with several IM therapies--biofeedback, mindfulness, and the use of St. John＇s wort--improved significantly. Students＇ personal health practices also improved, including better sleep, exercise, and stress management for the class of 2015. Students graduating in 2016 reported decreased alcohol use in their third year compared with their first year. CONCLUSION： It is feasible to incorporate IM education into undergraduate medical education, and this is associated with improvement in students＇ knowledge of IM and personal health practices.

Potential of Wood Ash as a Fertilizer in BRS PiatãGrass Cultivation in the Brazilian Cerrado Soil

Utilizing wood ash as a fertilizer in agriculture is a viable alternative to the soil nutrients absorbed by the crops. The aim of this study was to assess the phytometric and productive features of Brachiaria brizantha (cv. BRS Piatã) fertilized with wood ash in the Brazilian Cerrado. The experiment was performed in a greenhouse, adopting a completely randomized design, and applying five rates of wood ash (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 g·dm-3) with five replicates. The shoot plant parts were subjected to three successive cuts 30-day intervals each. The results were submitted to the analysis of variance and regression analysis at 5% probability. The wood ash rates between 13 to 17 g·dm-3 clearly produced the best results for plant height (102.24, 84.42 and 63.27 cm), leaf/stem ratio (1.61, 1, 78 and 1.94), and chlorophyll index (46.66, 41.93 and 38.39), respectively, during the first, second and third evaluations. A 94% increase in the shoot dry mass (2nd and 3rd evaluations) and root parts was noted for the wood ash rate of 20 g·dm-3, compared with the treatment involving wood ash fertilization. Wood ash affects the phytometric features, increases the chlorophyll concentration and thus the BRS Piatãgrass production in the Oxisol of the Brazilian Cerrado.

Health Education has shown itself as essential for the understanding of individuals about psychological and physical changes caused by diseases. The chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a severe public health problem, and it depends on health education measures for its control. A group of patients with COPD, in pneumatological medical treatment, were investigated to find information about the disease. An observational, descriptive and analytical study with analysis and application of a semistructured questionnaire to evaluate the individuals’ knowledge about the COPD. Collected data were registered and analyzed using Google Docs. The software used for the calculation of statistical measures was Microsoft Excel®. For the research participants’ characterization analysis, the use of grouped data for the frequency distribution of Sturges Rule was necessary. This study provided knowledge about which information a group of bearers of COPD receives at a college hospital providing treatment. The interviewed have an average age of 70 years old and most are women with education level between elementary and high school and diagnose time of 6.8

MLS （Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome） or MPS VI （mucopolysaccharidosis VI） is an autosomal recessive pathology in which there is absence or low activity of the enzyme N-Acetylgalactosamine-4-Sulfatase, which hydrolyzes GAGs （glycosaminoglycans） in the body （mainly dermatan sulfate）. Consequently, there occurs lysosomal deposition of GAGs in connective tissue multisystemic. Myocardium and heart valves are frequently affected structures, presenting a direct correlation with the reports of complications and deaths. Case report： RGS, male, 3 years and 2 months, diagnosed with MPS VI from the first month of life, in weekly ERT （enzyme replacement therapy） since 4 months of age （inconstant）. At physical examination： normotensive, with holosystolic heart murmur 3＋/6＋ in mitral focus. Complementary tests： normal electrocardiogram, echocardiogram with pronounced mitral regurgitation, concentric left ventricular hypertrophy of moderate degree and mild aortic insufficiency. Discussion： Mitral valve disease is common in patients with MLS. Conditions such as cardiomyopathy, fibroelastosis, aneurysm and pulmonary hypertension may occur in these patients, indicative of morbidity and mortality. Early and constant ERT may be useful in slowing a progression of heart disease. Conclusions： follow-up with a cardiologist is important to evaluate the progression of cardiac complications in MPS VI. Constant and early ERT provides better prognosis for these patients.

Reproductive Components of Safflower Genotypes Submitted of Bulk Density Levels in the Brazilian Cerrado

Nutrient absorption in crops can decline and their development can be hindered by increased bulk density. This study aimed at assessing the manner in which bulk density levels affect the reproductive structures of the safflower genotypes in the Brazilian Cerrado. The completely randomized design was adopted with four replications for the experiment, which was conducted in a greenhouse using Oxisol collected from 0.0 to 0.2 m depth from the region supporting Cerrado vegetation. The treatments included ten safflower genotypes (PI 237538, PI 248385, PI 250196, PI 301049, PI 305173, PI 305205, PI 306520, PI 306603, PI 560202 and PI 613366) and five bulk density levels (1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 Mg·m-3). Evaluations were done at 90 days after emergence, in terms of the number, diameter and dry mass of the heads. The data were submitted to the analysis of variance. The means were grouped using the Scott-Knott test at 5% probability. The diameter and dry mass of the chapters were influenced by the mean bulk density of 1.10 Mg·m-3. A notable interaction was evident between the safflower genotypes and bulk density levels for the diameter and dry mass of the head alone, revealing the high degree of genetic variability that environmental changes induce among the genotypes. The PI 250196, PI 301049, PI 305173 and PI 305205 genotypes exhibited greater stability to the bulk density variations compared with the others. Mean bulk density of 1.2 Mg·m-3 was found to impair the development of the reproductive components of the safflower genotypes.

Emergency department operations and management education in emergency medicine training

BACKGROUND:This study was undertaken to examine the current level of operations and management education within US-based Emergency medicine Residency ***:Residency program directors at all US-based Emergency medicine Residency programs were anonymously surveyed via a web-based *** indicated their levels of residency education dedicated to documentation,billing/coding,core measure/quality indicator compliance,and operations *** were analyzed using descriptive statistics for the ordinal data/Likert ***:One hundred and six(106)program directors completed the study instrument of one hundred and fifty-six(156)programs(70%).Of these,82.6%indicated emergency department(ED)operations and management education within the training *** documentation training was noted in all but 1 program(99%).Program educational offerings also included billing/coding(83%),core measure/quality indicators(78%)and operations management training(71%).In all areas,the most common means of educating came through didactic sessions and direct attending feedback or 69%-94%and 72%-98%*** leadership was most confident with resident understanding of quality documentation(80%)and less so with core measures(72%),billing/coding/RVUs(58%),and operations management tools(23%).CONCLUSIONS:While most EM residency programs integrate basic operational education related to documentation and billing/coding,a smaller number provide focused education on the dayto-day management and operations of the *** leadership perceives graduating resident understanding of operational management tools to be *** respondents value further resident curriculum development of ED operations and management.

HELLP综合征引起的肝破裂的特点及治疗

Objective: The purpose of this study was to review the management of hepatic rupture caused by HELLP(hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count) syndrome and to assess maternal and perinatal outcomes of these cases. Study design: A retrospective study of HELLP syndrome cases that were complicated by hepatic rupture was conducted. Results: Ten cases of hepatic rupture were identified. The median maternal age was 42.5±5.9 years(median±SD), and the median gestational age at delivery was 35.5±4.9 weeks. The most frequent signs and symptoms of hepatic rupture were the sudden onset of abdominal pain, acute anemia, and hypotension. Laboratory findings included low platelet count and increased hepatic enzymes. Surgery was performed in 9 cases. One case was treated nonsurgically. The maternal mortality rate was 10%, and the perinatal mortality rate was 80%. Conclusion: A combination of surgical treatment with hepatic artery ligation and omental patching with supportive measures was effective in decreasing the mortality rate in hepatic rupture caused by HELLP syndrome.
