Extreme Weather Disruptions and Emergency Preparedness Among Older Adults in Ohio: An Eight-County Assessment

The disproportionate risks and impacts of climate change and extreme weather on older adults are increasingly evident. While especially true in disaster-prone areas, human-caused climate change introduces an element of uncertainty even in previously identified “safe” regions such as the Midwestern United States. Using a cumulative disadvantage and vulnerability-informed framework and descriptive statistics from multiple data sources, this article provides an overview of climate impacts, vulnerabilities, and county-level characteristics, focusing on older adults living in Central Ohio. A comparative multiple-case study methodology was used to triangulate regionally representative primary and secondary data sources to examine state and county-level measures of vulnerability, emergency preparedness, and disruptions caused by extreme weather among older adults across eight counties in Central Ohio. Seventy-eight percent of older adults in the sample reported being prepared for emergencies per Federal Emergency Management Agency guidelines. Older adults in Union County reported the highest rates of preparedness, while those in Fayette County reported the lowest. County-level rates of disruption of life activities by extreme weather ranged widely. Among the most rural in the region, Fayette County emerged as uniquely disadvantaged, with the lowest median income, the most vulnerable across multiple social vulnerability dimensions, and the most reported disruptions to life activities from extreme weather. County profiles offer a snapshot of existing vulnerabilities, socioeconomic conditions, special needs, preparedness, and current disruptions among older adults in the region and can inform resource mobilization across community and policy contexts.

This study explores the meaning of the use of community psychiatric rehabilitation(CPR)services to gain knowledge to improve services and shed more light on how to facilitate *** topics explored included:the motivation for participation,perception and expectation towards CPR,the interactions with professionals in the CPR Center,and the feelings towards activities.A qualitative approach was adopted,and 30 consumers were interviewed face-to-face by using semi-structured interview *** were analyzed using the open coding method of grounded *** consumer accounts provided information on the eight aspects of CPR *** findings revealed that the CPR Center created a lifeworld,a friendly place similar to home with structure and *** relationship was the key change agent for *** professionals adopted recovery-oriented approach to empower participants by giving opportunities and *** essential ingredients of this lifeworld covered rehabilitation goals,physical exercises,psychological impact,social interactions,learning,and economic *** services were venues for interpersonal interactions and provided structure for daily life,which helped consumers reach their rehabilitation goals and brought existential meaning to their ***,the accounts also revealed negative phenomena in the CPR *** were made to improve services.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) is a growing problem among Asian *** on the Centers for Disease Control,the age-adjusted prevalence of T2 DM for Asian Americans is 9%,placing them at "moderate risk".However differential patterns of disease burden emerge when examining disaggregated data acrossAsian American ethnic groups; with Filipino,Pacific Islander,Japanese,and South Asian groups consistently described as having the highest prevalence of T2 *** and strengthening prevalence data is vital for on-going prevention *** strongest evidence currently available to guide the prevention of T2 DM in the United States comes from a large multicenter randomized clinical control trial called the Diabetes Prevention Program,which targets individual lifestyle behavior *** has been translated and adopted for some Asian American groups,and shows *** stronger study designs and attention to several key methodological considerations will improve the *** attention has also been directed toward population level downstream prevention *** an infrastructure that includes both individual and population approaches is needed to prevent T2 DM among Asian American populations,and is essential for reducing health disparities.

FPC: A New Approach to Firewall Policies Compression

Firewalls are crucial elements that enhance network security by examining the field values of every packet and deciding whether to accept or discard a packet according to the firewall policies. With the development of networks, the number of rules in firewalls has rapidly increased, consequently degrading network *** addition, because most real-life firewalls have been plagued with policy conflicts, malicious traffics can be allowed or legitimate traffics can be blocked. Moreover, because of the complexity of the firewall policies, it is very important to reduce the number of rules in a firewall while keeping the rule semantics unchanged and the target firewall rules conflict-free. In this study, we make three major contributions. First, we present a new approach in which a geometric model, multidimensional rectilinear polygon, is constructed for the firewall rules compression ***, we propose a new scheme, Firewall Policies Compression(FPC), to compress the multidimensional firewall rules based on this geometric model. Third, we conducted extensive experiments to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The experimental results demonstrate that the FPC method outperforms the existing approaches, in terms of compression ratio and efficiency while maintaining conflict-free firewall rules.

Valuable Beyond Vulnerable: A Scoping Review on the Contributions of Older Forced Migrants in Post-migration Recovery

During times of crisis, including pandemics, climate change, and forced migration, much of the discourse in ageing research and intervention centers on the vulnerabilities of older adults. Unfortunately, the valuable contributions of older adults to post-disaster recovery and healing are often overlooked and undervalued. Our aim in this scoping review is to shed light on the critical contributions of older forced migrants to post-migration recovery. We set the scene by introducing the two significant global demographic changes of the twenty-first century: forced migration and ageing. We provide a discourse on older forced migrants, ageing in situations of forced migration, and some of the challenges faced by older forced migrants. We then present some of the substantial roles of older forced migrants in post-migration recovery, including building resilience, contributing to culture and language transfer, providing emotional support, offering mentorship and leadership, participating in community building, and fostering social integration. We close by highlighting some of the lessons that can be drawn from understanding the unique roles played by older adults in post-forced migration recovery and the key actions necessary to promote these roles.

This study aimed to determine the net energy expenditure(EENET)required for overground walking and running 1200 m in a sample of healthy adolescent boys and girls.A secondary purpose was to describe the effect of body composition on energy expenditure(EE)of walking versus *** healthy adolescents(9 boys,11 girls)aged 15.85±2.80 years performed 2 field tests in regular outdoor conditions:overground walking(1.64±0.17 m/s)and submaximal running(3.13±0.42 m/s),at a self-selected steady *** was measured via indirect *** sample t-tests were used to determine if there were differences between walking and running conditions and mean percentage differences were estimated for various physiological *** in EENET between conditions were performed for both genders using a two(condition)by two(gender)analysis of variance repeated measures design,with fat free mass as a *** increased by 90.43%between the 2 conditions,while the different components of EE increased by almost 20%.Running elicited a significantly greater EENET than walking for both genders;however,boys’and girls’EE did not differ *** EENET was adjusted for fat free mass,there was a statistically significant condition×fat free mass *** findings in this study indicate that both adolescent boys and girls expend more energy during running than walking,without being affected by body *** mass and fat free mass significantly correlated with EE only during *** addition,the trained participants of the study optimized locomotion to minimize EE.
