Priority sources identification and risks assessment of heavy metal(loid)s in agricultural soils of a typical antimony mining watershed

Heavy metal(loid)(HM)pollution in agricultural soils has become an environmental concern in antimony(Sb)mining ***,priority pollution sources identification and deep understanding of environmental risks of HMs face great challenges due to multiple and complex pollution sources ***,an integrated approach was conducted to distinguish pollution sources and assess human health risk(HHR)and ecological risk(ER)in a typical Sb mining watershed in Southern *** approach combines absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression(APCS-MLR)and positivematrix factorization(PMF)models with ER and HHR *** pollution sources were distinguished for both models,and APCS-MLR model was more accurate and *** HM concentration source was natural source(39.1%),followed by industrial and agricultural activities(23.0%),unknown sources(21.5%)and Sb mining and smelting activities(16.4%).Although natural source contributed the most to HM concentrations,it did not pose a significant *** and agricultural activities predominantly contributed to ER,and attention should be paid to Cd and *** mining and smelting activities were primary anthropogenic sources of HHR,particularly Sb and As *** ER and HHR assessments,Sb mining and smelting,and industrial and agricultural activities are critical sources,causing serious ecological and health *** study showed the advantages of multiple receptor model application in obtaining reliable source identification and providing better source-oriented risk *** pollution management,such as regulating mining and smelting and implementing soil remediation in polluted agricultural soils,is strongly recommended for protecting ecosystems and humans.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids(PAs)and their N-oxides(PANOs)are phytotoxins produced by various plant species and have been emerged as environmental *** sorption/desorption behaviors of PAs/PANOs in soil are crucial due to the horizontal transfer of these natural products from PA-producing plants to soil and subsequently absorbed by plant *** study firstly investigated the sorption/desorption behaviors of PAs/PANOs in tea plantation soils with distinct *** amounts for seneciphylline(Sp)and seneciphylline-N-oxide(SpNO)in three acidic soils ranged from 2.9 to 5.9μg/g and 1.7 to 2.8μg/g,*** percentages for Sp and SpNO were from 22.2%to 30.5%and 36.1%to 43.9%.In the mixed PAs/PANOs systems,stronger sorption of PAs over PANOs was occurred in tested ***,the Freundlich models more precisely described the sorption/desorption *** exchange capacity,sand content and total nitrogen were identified as major influencing factors by linear regression ***,the soils exhibiting higher sorption capacities for compounds with greater *** were more likely to migrate within soils and be absorbed by tea *** contributes to the understanding of environmental fate of PAs/PANOs in tea plantations and provides basic data and clues for the development of PAs/PANOs reduction technology.

Evaluating the impacts of converting grain to vegetable fields on nitrate transport in the deep vadose zone of the North China Plain

Nitrate(NO_(3)^(-))accumulation and transport processes in the thick vadose zone affect the evolution of the groundwater NO_(3)^(-)content in intensive agricultural *** land-use change(ALUC),typically accompanied by substantial alterations in nitrogen fertilizer application and irrigation practices,is an important influencing *** study evaluated the changes in NO_(3)^(-)accumulation and transport in the deep vadose zone(DVZ,below the root zone),and the groundwater NO_(3)^(-)content associated with ALUC from grain to vegetable fields in the North China Plain(NCP).The ALUC from grain to vegetable resulted in nitrate–nitrogen(NO_(3)^(-)-N)accumulation in DVZ increased by 235.5 kg ha^(-1)m^(-1)(163.2%)in the piedmont plain and 224.9 kg ha^(-1)m^(-1)(102.7%)in the central plain,*** change accelerated downward transport velocity in the DVZ(from 0.81±0.47 to 0.89±0.55 m yr^(-1)in the piedmont plain,and from 0.24±0.12 to 0.92±0.12 m yr^(-1)in the central plain)and increased NO_(3)^(-)leaching *** transport velocity and leaching fluxes resulted in chemical N-fertilizer entering the aquifer in several areas in the piedmont *** impact of the agricultural activity intensity changes,accompanied by the ALUC,on groundwater quantity and quality should be considered in similar regions.

The evaluation of toxicity related to polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans(PCDD/Fs)and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls(DL-PCBs)is crucial for a comprehensive risk assessment in real-world exposure *** study employed a controlled feeding experiment to investigate the metabolic effects of dioxin-like compounds(DLCs)on laying hens via feed *** enriched with two concentrations(1.17 and 5.13 pg toxic equivalents(TEQ)/g dry weight(dw))were administered over 14 days,followed by 28 days of clean *** analyses of blood samples revealed significant metabolic variations between PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs exposed groups and controls,reflecting the induced metabolic *** changes were observed in sphingosine,palmitoleic acid,linoleate,linolenic acid,taurocholic acid,indole acrylic acid,and dibutyl phthalate levels,implying possible connections between PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs toxic effects and energy-neuronal imbalances,along with lipid accumulation and anomalous amino acid metabolism,impacting taurine ***,we identified three differential endogenous metabolites—L-tryptophan,indole-3-acetaldehyde,and indole acrylic acid—as potential ligands for the aryl hydrocarbon receptor(AhR),suggesting their role inmediating PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs *** comprehensive investigation provides novel insights into the metabolic alterations induced by PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs in laying hens,thereby enhancing our ability to assess risks associated with their exposure in human populations.

Application of myxovirus resistance protein A in the etiological diagnosis of infections in adults

BACKGROUND: Inappropriate antibiotic treatment for patients with viral infections has led to a surge in antimicrobial resistance, increasing mortality and healthcare costs. Viral and bacterial infections are often difficult to distinguish. Myxovirus resistance protein A(MxA), an essential antiviral factor induced by interferon after viral infection, holds promise for distinguishing between viral and bacterial infections. This study aimed to determine the ability of Mx A to distinguish viral from bacterial ***: We quantified MxA in 121 infected patients via dry immunofluorescence chromatography. The Kruskal-Wallis test and receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve analysis were used to determine the diagnostic value of Mx A, either alone or in combination with C-reactive protein(CRP) or procalcitonin(PCT), in patients with viral, bacterial, or ***: The value of MxA(ng/mL) was significantly higher in patients with viral infections than in those with bacterial and co-infections(82.3 [24.5–182.9] vs. 16.4 [10.8–26.5], P<0.0001)(82.3 [24.5–182.9] vs. 28.5 [10.2–106.8], P=0.0237). The area under the curve(AUC) of the ROC curve for distinguishing between viral and bacterial infections was 0.799(95% confidence interval [95% CI] 0.696–0.903), with a sensitivity of 68.9%(95% CI 54.3%–80.5%) and specificity of 90.0%(95% CI 74.4%–96.5%) at the threshold of 50.3 ng/mL. Combining the MxA level with the CRP or PCT level improved its ability. MxA expression was low in cytomegalovirus(15.8 [9.6–47.6] ng/mL) and Epstein-Barr virus(12.9 [8.5–21.0] ng/mL) ***: Our study showed the diagnostic efficacy of Mx A in distinguishing between viral and bacterial infections, with further enhancement when it was combined with CRP or PCT. Moreover, EpsteinBarr virus and human cytomegalovirus infections did not elicit elevated Mx A expression.

Quantifying and Mapping the Effects of Ecosystem Services on agricultural Competitiveness:A Case Study in Shandong Province, China

Quantifying and mapping how ecosystem services impact agricultural competitiveness is crucial for attaining the Sustainable Development Goals of United Nations. However, few study quantified agricultural competitiveness and mapped the effects of ecosystem services on agricultural competitiveness using multiple models. In this study, multi-source data from 2000 to 2020 were utilized to establish the indicator system of agricultural competitiveness; five ecosystem services were quantified using computation models; Geographic Information System(GIS) spatial analysis was used to explore the spatial patterns of agricultural competitiveness and ecosystem services; geographic detector models were applied to investigate the effects and driving mechanisms of ecosystem services on agricultural competitiveness. Shandong Province of China was selected as the case study area. The results demonstrated that: 1) there was a significant increase in agricultural competitiveness during the study period, with high levels observed mainly in the east region of the study area. 2) The spatial distribution patterns of ecosystem services and agricultural competitiveness primarily exhibited High-High and Low-Low Cluster types. 3) Habitat quality emerged as the main driving factor of agricultural competitiveness in 2000 and 2020, while water yield played a substantial role in 2010.4) The coupling of two ecosystem services exerted a greater effect on agricultural competitiveness compared to individual ecosystem service. The innovations of this study are constructing an indicator system to quantify agricultural competitiveness, and exploring the effects of ecosystem services on agricultural competitiveness. This study proposed an indicator system to quantify agricultural competitiveness, which can be applied in other regions, and explored the effects of ecosystem services on agricultural competitiveness.
