The mechanism of slope failure associated with overpressure that is caused by hydrocarbon migration and accumulation remains ***-resolution seismic data and gas hydrate drilling data collected from the Shenhu gas hydrate field(site SH5)offer a valuable opportunity to study the relations between submarine slope failure and hydrocarbon accumulation and flow that is associated with a~2 kmdiameter gas chimney developed beneath site SH5 where none gas hydrates had been recovered by drilling and sampling despite the presence of distinct bottom simulating reflectors(BSRs)and favorable gas hydrate *** mechanism of submarine slope failure resulted from buoyancy extrusion and seepage-derived deformation which were caused by overpressure from a~1100 m-high gas column in a gas chimney was studied via numerical ***~9.55 MPa overpressure caused by hydrocarbons that migrated through the gas chimney and then accumulated beneath subsurface gas hydratebearing impermeable *** may have resulted in a submarine slope failure,which disequilibrated the gas hydrate-bearing zone and completely decomposed the gas hydrate once precipitated at site *** the gas hydrate decomposition,the largely impermeable sediments overlying the gas chimney may have undergone a major upward deformation due to the buoyancy extrusion of the overpressure in the gas chimney,and slope failure was initiated from plastic strain of the sediments and reduced internal *** failure subsequently resulted in partial gas hydrate decomposition and sediment permeability *** pressurized gas in the gas chimney may have diffused into the overlying sediments controlled by seepage-derived deformation,causing an effective stress reduction at the base of the sediments and significant plastic *** may have formed a new cycle of submarine slope failure and finally the total gas hydrate *** modeling results of buoyancy extrusion and seepage-deri

The channel back-siltation problem has been restricting the development of channels,and its monitoring is limited by funds and natural ***,predicting the channel back-siltation situation in a timely and accurate manner is ***,a numerical simulation of the back-siltation problem in the sea area near the channel is of great significance to the maintenance of a *** this study,the back siltation of a deep-water channel in the Lanshan Port area of the Port of Rizhao after dredging is *** paper relies on the MIKE 21 software to establish the wave,tidal current,and sediment numerical models and uses measured data from two observation stations in the study area for *** this basis,taking one month as an example,the entire project channel was divided into five sections,and three observation points were set on each *** results show that the area with offshore siltation is located in the northerly direction of the artificial anti-wave *** occurred on the northern seabed in the sea a little farther from the *** occurred on the seabed surface far away from the shoreline,and with the increase in the distance from the shoreline,the amount of siltation in the south,center,and north became gradually closed,and the results can be used to guide actual engineering *** study will play a positive role in promoting the dredging project of Rizhao Lanshan Port.

Field and laboratory observations indicate that the variation of drag coefficient with wind speed at high winds is different from that under low-to-moderate *** taking the effects of wave development and sea spray into account,a new parameterization of drag coefficient applicable from low to extreme winds is *** is shown that,under low-to-moderate wind conditions so that the sea spray effects could be neglected,the nondimensional aerodynamic roughness first increases and then decreases with the increasing wave age;whereas under high wind conditions,the drag coefficient decreases with the increasing wind speed due to the modification of the logarithmic wind profile by the effect of sea spray droplets produced by bursting bubbles or wind tearing breaking wave *** drag coefficients and sea surface aerodynamic roughnesses reach their maximum values vary under different wave ***,the reduction of drag coefficient under high winds reduces the increasing rate of friction velocity with increasing wind speed.

The world’s coral reefs are threatened by the cumulative impacts of global climate change and local *** largely by a desire to understand the interactions between corals and their symbiotic microorganisms,and to use this knowledge to eventually improve coral health,interest in coral microbiology and the coral microbiome has increased in recent *** this review,we summarize the role of the coral microbiome in maintaining a healthy metaorganism by providing nutrients,support for growth and development,protection against pathogens,and mitigation of environmental *** explore the concept of coral microbiome engineering,that is,precise and controlled manipulation of the coral microbiome to aid and enhance coral resilience and tolerance in the changing *** coral microbiome engineering is clearly in its infancy,several recent breakthroughs indicate that such engineering is an effective tool for restoration and preservation of these valuable *** assist with identifying future research targets,we have reviewed the common principles of microbiome engineering and its applications in improving human health and agricultural productivity,drawing parallels to where coral microbiome engineering can advance in the not-too-distant ***,we end by discussing the challenges faced by researchers and practitioners in the application of microbiome engineering in coral reefs and provide recommendations for future work.

Atmospheric correction is one of the major challenges in ocean color remote sensing,thus threatening comprehensive evaluation of water quality within aquatic *** this study,five state-of-the-art atmospheric correction(AC)processors(***,C2RCC,iCOR,L2gen,and Polymer)were applied to Operational Land Imager(OLI)Landsat-8 scenes and evaluated against in situ measurements across various types of waters worldwide.A total of 262 matchups between in situ measured and satellite-derived remote sensing reflectance(R_(rs))at 20 sites were obtained between August 2013 and August *** of optical water types(OWTs)was carried out using in situ measurements with matched satellite ***-specific analysis demonstrated that L2gen produced the most accurate Rrs with R^(2)≥0.74 and root mean squared error(RMSE)≤0.0018 sr^(–1) for the four visible bands of OLI,followed by Polymer,C2RCC,iCOR,and *** terms of R_(rs) spectral similarity,C2RCC yielded the lowest spectral angle(SA)of 8.55°,followed by L2gen(SA=9.20°).The advantage and disadvantage of each AC scheme were *** to improve the accuracy for atmospheric correction were made,such as polarization observations and concurrent aerosol and ocean color measurements.

In recent decades,environmental changes in the Arctic have aroused widespread concern around the *** better understand ecology issues such as ecosystem dynamics,the Arctic and the subarctic regions were integrated as the“pan-Arctic”*** this study,mesozooplankton were sampled from the Bering Sea shelf to the northern Chukchi Sea during the 10th Chinese National Arctic Research Expedition in *** on the species composition and abundance,three geographical communities were identified:the Bering Sea shelf community(BSS),the Bering Strait transitional community(BST),and the Chukchi Sea shelf community(CSS).The BSS was characterized by Bering Sea oceanic species such as Eucalanus bungii;the BST was mainly composed of the pan-Arctic distributed Calanus glacialis,meroplankton of benthos,and neritic species such as Centropages abdominalis;copepods,especially the copepodite of ***,were predominant in the CSS *** BSS community structure was strongly affected by the inflow of Bering Shelf Water,while those of BST and CSS were determined by the recruitment of local *** zooplankton community structure is influenced by both advection and environmental changes such as warming and a prolonged productivity ***,it was difficult to distinguish the changes induced by climate change from the effects of the Bering Sea *** key to solving this problem is the accumulation of comparable data,which requires continuous monitoring of key species such as *** and Calanus hyperboreus.

Differences in progress across sustainable development goals(SDGs)are widespread globally;meanwhile,the rising call for prioritizing specific SDGs may exacerbate such ***,how these progress differences would influence global sustainable development has been long ***,we present the first quantitative assessment of SDGs’progress differences globally by adopting the SDGs progress evenness *** results highlight that the uneven progress across SDGs has been a hindrance to sustainable development because(1)it is strongly associated with many public health risks(e.g.,air pollution),social inequalities(e.g.,gender inequality,modern slavery,wealth gap),and a reduction in life expectancy;(2)it is also associated with deforestation and habitat loss in terrestrial and marine ecosystems,increasing the challenges related to biodiversity conservation;(3)most countries with low average SDGs performance show lower progress evenness,which further hinders their fulfillment of SDGs;and(4)many countries with high average SDGs performance also showcase stagnation or even retrogression in progress evenness,which is partly ascribed to the antagonism between climate actions and other *** findings highlight that while setting SDGs priorities may be more realistic under the constraints of multiple global stressors,caution must be exercised to avoid new problems from intensifying uneven progress across ***,our study reveals that the urgent needs regarding SDGs of different regions seem complementary,emphasizing that regional collaborations(e.g.,demand-oriented carbon trading between SDGs poorly performed and well-performed countries)may promote sustainable development achievements at the global scale.

Amphidinium species are amongst the most abundant benthic dinoflagellates in marine intertidal sandy *** of them are able to produce a variety of bioactive compounds that can have both harmful effects and pharmaceutical *** diversity of Amphidinium in shallow waters along the Chinese coast was investigated by isolating single cells from sand,coral,and macroalgal samples collected from 2012 to *** morphologies were subjected to examination using light microscopy(LM)and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).A total of 74 Amphidinium strains were morphologically identified,belonging to 11 species:***,***,***,***,***,***,***,***,***,***,***,as well as an undefined *** last seven species have not been previously reported in Chinese *** carterae subcladesⅠ,Ⅱ,andⅣwere found in the South China Sea,while subcladeⅢwas only found in the Yellow *** body scales were observed on the surface of subcladesⅢ and Ⅳ,supporting the idea that *** might contain several different *** subunit ribosomal RNA(LSU rRNA)sequencesbased phylogeny revealed two groups(GroupsⅠandⅡ)within Amphidinium,which is consistent with the relative position of sulcus(in touch with cingulum or not).In addition,large differences in morphology and molecular phylogeny between ***(the type species of Amphidinium)and other species,suggest that a subdivision of Amphidinium might be *** pigment profiles of all available strains were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC).Eleven pigments,including peridinin,diadinoxanthin,diatoxanthin,pheophorbide(and pheophorbide a),antheraxanthin,β-carotene,and four different chlorophylls were *** high pheophorbide/pheophorbide a ratio in Amphidinium implies that it may be a good candidate as a natural source of photosensitizers,a well-known anticancer drug.

Taxonomic sufficiency(TS)refers to identifying taxa to a taxonomic level sufficient to detect community changes in stressed environments and may provide a cost-effective approach in routine monitoring ***,there is still limited information regarding the seasonal impact of applying TS and its implications for the ecological quality evaluation in the estuarine *** study investigated the relationship between the multivariate-AZTI’s marine Biotic Index(M-AMBI)and environmental variables in three seasons(i.e.,spring,summer,and autumn)in the Liaohe River *** tested the reliability of TS for simplifying the M-AMBI *** results showed that family and genus level data could reproduce the spatial-temporal patterns of community structure at the species *** M-AMBI values showed a consistent spatial distribution pattern in all sampling seasons,with a decreasing trend with the increasing distance from the estuary *** genus and family level data performed nearly as well as species level in detecting the seasonal variations of pollutants(i.e.,nutrients and total organic content).The family level M-AMBI was feasible to discern stress in the Liaohe River Estuary because of the high aggregation ratios at different taxonomic levels in all sampling *** findings suggest that applying taxonomic sufficiency based on the M-AMBI provides an efficient approach for evaluating ecological quality in the Liaohe River Estuary.
