Subtle Impacts of Temperature and Rainfall Patterns on Land Cover Change Overtime and Future Projections in the Mara River Basin, Kenya

The interactive and cumulative effect of temperature and rainfall on land cover change is a priority at global, regional and local scale. This study examined changes in six land cover categories (forestland, grasslands, shrub land, bare land, built-up areas and agricultural lands) in four sub-catchments (Amala, Nyangores, Talek and Sand River), of the Mara River basin over a 30-year period (1987-2017) and made predictions of future land cover change patterns. Landsat Imageries of 90 m resolution were retrieved and analyzed using ArcGIS 10.0 software. Relationship between NDVI, temperature and precipitation was determined using Pearson’s correlation coefficient, while Markov chains analyses were performed on different land cover categories to project future trends. Results showed low to moderate (R2 = 0.002 to 0.6) trends of change in NDVI of different land cover categories across all sub-catchments. The greatest change (R2 0.34 to 0.5) was recorded in bare land in three of the four sub-catchments studied. Precipitation showed a strong positive correlation with built-up areas, forestlands, croplands, bare land, grasslands and shrub lands, while temperature correlated strongly but negatively with the same land cover categories. The change detection matrix projected significant but varying changes in land cover categories across the four sub-catchments by 2027. This study underscores the impact of changing climatic factors on various land cover categories in the Mara River basin sub-catchments, with different land cover categories exhibiting strong positive sensitivity to high precipitation and low temperature and vice-versa.

Background: Ethiopia is one of the countries with the highest Human Immune-deficiency Virus (HIV) and Tuberculosis (TB) infection rates in the world. To improve TB/HIV Programs outcomes through public private partnership Mix (PPM) approach was in place since 2006. But the status of its implementation has never been assessed. Methods: In this cross sectional study we employed mixed methods;we interviewed 272 tuberculosis patients, reviewed their records, and facilitated six in-depth interviews and four focus group discussions. The survey was conducted from January through March 2014 in Addis Ababa. Result: Among the interviewees 51.5% were males and the mean age was (32.7 ± SD 12.4) years. PPM facilities were offering HIV counseling for all TB patients;whereas 87.5% of TB patients have received HIV testing services. The TB/HIV co-infection rate was 45.4%. And only 72.2% TB/HIV patients were enrolled into chronic disease care services, 64.8% were put on Cotrimoxazol Preventive Therapy (CPT) and 50% were put on standard highly active anti-retro viral therapy (HAART) services. All PPM facilities don’t have IPT (Isoniazid Prophylaxis Therapy). The TB/HIV collaborative services strongly linked with the public health sector which was documented by developing inclusive work plan which create access to supplies and conducting joint supportive supervisions. However, the majorities of PPM facilities don’t have Multi-Disciplinary Team and lacks some essential supplies. The predictor for uptake of CPT were: being females TB patients was 86% lower than their counter part males (AOR = 0.14;95% CI = 0.04 - 0.92 P = 0.002), patients who has attended their TB/HIV care at private for the profit facilities were 84% lower than those attend in private not for profit facilities (AOR = 0.16;95% CI = 0.49 - 0.55, P = 0.003). Background:Mass media exposure plays a pivotal role in health communication and adoption of a healthy *** this study,we aimed to measure the prevalence of malaria prevention behaviour among adult women in eight malariaendemic countries in sub-Saharan Africa(SSA),and assess the influence of mass media exposure in the adoption of those ***:For this study,we collected cross-sectional data on 46,822 women aged between 15 and 49 years from the Malaria Indicator Surveys(MIS)conducted in Burkina Faso,Ghana,Mali,Malawi,Kenya,Nigeria,Sierra Leone and *** the outcome variable,malaria prevention behaviour was proxied by the use of insecticide treated nets(ITNs)and uptake of antimalarial drugs in last ***:The overall prevalence of sleeping under ITN and that of taking antimalarial drug during the last pregnancy was respectively 67.9%(95%CI=66.6-69.2)and 72.8%(95%CI=71.3-74.2).However,there were disparities in the prevalence of using ITN and antimalarial drug use across the study *** the multivariable regression analysis,not receiving malaria related information from radio,poster/billboards,community events,and health workers were found to be significantly associated with reduction in the odds of using ITN the previous *** the use of antimalarial drugs during last pregnancy,the odds were 23%[OR=0.773,95%CI=0.625-0.956]lower for those who did not receive malaria information on radio compared with those who ***:These findings indicate a potentially important role of malaria information received through mass media on utilisation of ITN among women in *** research is needed to explore the factors that limit the accessibility to malaria information through mass media.
