Responses of grazing households to different levels of payments for ecosystem services

Introduction:Payments for Ecosystem Services(PES)programs have been implemented globally to protect ecosystems while securing the well-being of affected *** payment standards are key to successful PES *** some approaches are available for determining payment standards,few studies have applied them for grassland conservation with location indicators and socioeconomic contexts properly ***:Using China’s first pilot Grassland Ecological Compensation policy(GECP)as an example,we analyzed the effects of payment levels,other natural and socioeconomic factors on herders’willingness to participate in the GECP in Damao County in Inner Mongolia where grassland degradation is happening at an alarming rate due to overgrazing and cropland ***:Our results show that households with lower herding income,older age,higher education,larger grassland areas,and worse social relationships are more inclined to participate in the *** payment level,as well as natural and socioeconomic contextual factors,significantly affect the response of herdsmen,and a reasonable grassland payment standard with a 95%policy compliance rate should be 8.8 yuan *** and Conclusion:Our findings can inform governments to develop effective PES programs to balance the need of human well-being improvement and grassland conservation in China and beyond.

Analysis of global CCS Technology,Regulations and Its Potential for Emission Reduction with Focus on China

This paper introduces the development of Carbon Capture and Storage （CCS） technology, the progress in CCS demonstration projects, and regulations and policies related to CCS. Barriers and limitations for the large-scale deployment of CCS are discussed. CCS and different technological solutions for emission reduction （e.g., energy conservation and renewable energy） are compared. The analysis shows that China should carefully evaluate the negative impacts of CCS deployment and needs to enhance the research and development input in CCS in order to master core technologies of CCS systems. Furthermore, CCS incentives should depend on actual CCS development. Based on the current situation, China may need to focus on retrofitting existing thermal power plants with CCS technology, so CCS can be promoted for future large-scale application.

The COVID-19 Pandemic and Consumption of Food away from Home:Evidence from High-frequency Rcstaurant Transaction Data

This article investigates how the COVID-19 pandemic and related public health measures affected the consumption of food away from home(FAFH)among Chinese *** obtained access to the complete sales records from a major restaurant chain in China,for 111 sites located in 12 cities,covering over 5.6 million high-frequency dining transactions made between 1 January 2019 and 31 December *** applying a high-dimensional fixed-effects model,we found that,on average,consumers spent more and ordered more calories(as well as carbohydrates,protein,fat,and sodium)after the COVID-19 outbreak than in *** results do not support the hypothesis that COVID-19 led to healthier eating behaviors during and after the *** results underline the importance of nutrition education and awareness programs to mitigate unhealthy eating habits generated by the pandemic and of the continued role of FAFH after the pandemic.

The European Union(EU)is developing the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism(CBAM)to address carbon leakage in international ***,the EU has paid inadequate attention to input-output linkages,specifically those in the steel,aluminum,and fertiliser *** study aims to identify priority sectors eligible for initial regulation within the emissions-intensive trade-exposed(EITE)industries based on input-output linkages and compare its impacts with the current CBAM sector *** study constructs a global Production Network(GPN)and Carbon Flow Network(CFN)to present the input trade and embodied carbon flows for the EITE *** study highlights the role of the EITE industries as influential nodes in the production network and how the EITE industries in the EU contribute to carbon *** improve the economy and political acceptability,CABM should cover four priority sectors with low economic impacts but a crucial role in reducing emissions,such as plastics,phosphorus fertiliser,aluminum,and copper industry.

Participatory Forest Management and Gender Inclusiveness within the Community Forest Management Groups of Bhutan

Community forest management groups (CFMGs) in Bhutan exhibit participatory forest management practices that recognize the importance of community’s collective participation in the management of natural forest resources. This approach involves the community in the stewardship of designated forest areas and resources to ensure sustainable livelihoods and realization of forest conservation objectives. The increase of CFMGs in the country has been successful. However, research on the extent of gender-inclusive participation in CFMGs is either insufficient or missing vis-à-vis the allocation of decision-making power. Therefore, this study analyzes the factors influencing gender participation in CFMGs and their integration into decision-making processes. Primary data were collected from 12 study sites spanning 4 regions, complemented by secondary data from the Forest Department. Regression models were used to identify factors significantly influencing CFMG member participation in decision-making. The empirical results of this study reveal that gender is a significant factor influencing participation in CFMG decision-making. The study concludes that there is insufficient participation of women members in decision-making processes. Therefore, consideration of gender should be included in the development phase of the CFMG policy in addition to promoting awareness of inequity between gender and the promotion of leadership roles for women in CFMGs.

Dear Editor,The growing demand for transportation energy has brought increasing challenges to reducing greenhouse gas ***,many countries or regions have proposed solutions to achieve carbon-neutral transportation such as the rapid expansion of the global electric vehicle(EV)***,these benefits are not *** the goal of decarbonization in electricity is achieved,the“pseudo net zero emissions”effect of the transportation sector will inevitably be accompanied by a quiet shifting of carbon responsibility.1 This shift is undoubtedly fatal for both net zero emissions at the national level and carbon responsibility at the industry level;however,the corresponding effects have not yet been clarified.

Finding Opportunity in Adversity:Tax-focused COVID-19 Support in BRITACOM Members

In this article,we show that,in common with the 2008-2009 global financial crisis,tax administration is already playing and will continue to play an important role in securing a safe and expeditious exit from the COVID-19 crisis,and the lessons learned from globally are crucial for the Belt and Road Initiative(BRI)crisis *** look at the types of measures being utilized both globally and by BRITACOM Members’governments,the added burden being placed on tax administrators as a result of the need to oversee new programs and change existing ones,and the potential longer-term effects on tax administration as the world learns to live in what may need to be a"new normal".We conclude that there is an opportunity to use this experience to"build better"as we look beyond the support phase and to the future of tax administration.

Comparison of different disinfection processes in the effective removal of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes

This study compared three different disinfection processes （chlorination, E-beam, and ozone） and the efficacy of three oxidants （H202, S2O8-, and peroxymonosulfate （MPS）） in removing antibiotic resistant bacteria （ARB） and antibiotic resistance genes （ARGs） in a synthetic wastewater. More than 30 mg/L of chlorine was needed to remove over 90% of ARB and ARG. For the E-beam method, only 1 dose （kGy） was needed to remove ARB and ARG, and ozone could reduce ARB and ARG by more than 90% even at 3 mg/L ozone concentration. In the ozone process, CT values （concentration × time） were compared for ozone alone and combined with different catalysts based on the 2-log removal of ARB and ARG. Ozone treatment yielded a value of 31 and 33 （mg·min）/L for ARB and ARGs respectively. On the other hand, ozone with persulfate yielded 15.9 and 18.5 （***）/L while ozone with monopersulfate yielded a value of 12 and 14.5 （mg·min）/L. This implies that the addition of these catalysts significantly reduces the contact time to achieve a 2-log removal, thus enhancing the process in terms of its kinetics.
