Exploring internship nursing students’ perception of gerontological nursing competencies: A descriptive study at Cairo University Hospitals

Objective:This research study explores the perceptions of gerontological nursing competencies,attitudes toward older individuals,and the willingness to provide care for the elderly among internship nursing *** and Methods:A convenience sample of 350 internship nursing students from Cairo University Faculty of nursing participated in the *** were collected using a set of comprehensive tools,including personal data and work experience assessment,the Hartford geriatric nurse competency tool,Kogan’s attitudes toward old people scale,and the modified elderly patient care ***:Descriptive analysis revealed balanced gender representation,with 60%identifying as *** percent of participants reported prior experience in gerontological ***-assessed competency scores indicated moderate proficiency in communication,physiological changes,and functional status *** such as pain management and restraint use demonstrated potential gaps in self-perceived *** toward older individuals were predominantly positive,and the willingness to provide care showed positive tendencies,with a minor degree of hesitation ***:The findings underscore the need for targeted interventions in nursing education to address competency gaps,enhance positive attitudes,and alleviate potential hesitations in caregiving for older *** the elderly population continues to grow,nursing education programs must prepare future practitioners to deliver comprehensive and compassionate care tailored to the unique needs of older adults.

Learning from the Film “Mitorishi (Transition Doula)”—Application to Understanding the End-of-Life in a gerontological nursing Practice Course in Japan

Purpose: This study aims to detail what nursing students learned from watching the film “Mitorishi”, which was used among the teaching materials in a gerontological nursing practice course in nursing education in Japan, and demonstrate the applicability of using the film as an element relevant to the teaching of end-of-life care in Japan. Methods: The participants were fourth-year nursing students at University A who had watched the film “Mitorishi” during the course, had submitted a report on what they learned, and provided informed consent to the study participation. The reports submitted by the participants were used as data and analyzed qualitatively using the content analysis approach. Results: The analysis identified the following five categories (number of codes): Characteristics of life during the final days (9), Importance of views on life and death (3), Importance of end-of-life care (3), Assistance in preparation for the final days of life (13), and Understanding the profession of transition doula (9). Discussion: The five categories show that the students have learned about the “role of nurses at the time of end-of-life care” while “visualizing end-of-life care” and learning “preparedness for end-of-life care”. These findings suggest that using the film “Mitorishi” in the teaching curriculum is effective for learning about end-of-life care for older people.

By learning from the management experience in gerontological nursing,community-based and long-term care in Taiw an area.,this article proposed that nursing care should be based on patients' demand-orientation,and cultural inheritance of humanity and kindness,development of palliative care,and enhancement in community cooperation so as to improve management level and service quality in gerontological nursing and community-based care,and diversity in geriatric nursing culture.

Factors associated with the incidence of patient falls in hospitals:A scoping review

When a patient falls within a hospital setting,there is a significant increase in the risk of severe injury or health *** factors associated with such falls is crucial to mitigate their impact on patient *** review seeks to analyze the factors contributing to patient falls in *** main goal is to enhance our understanding of the reasons behind these falls,enabling hospitals to devise more effective prevention *** study reviewed literature published from 2013 to 2022,using the Arksey and O’Malley methodology for a scoping *** research literature was searched from seven databases,namely,PubMed,ScienceDirect,Wiley Library,Garuda,Global Index Medicus,Emerald Insight,and Google *** inclusion criteria comprised both qualitative and quantitative primary and secondary data studies centered on hospitalized *** of the 893 studies analyzed,23 met the criteria and were included in this *** there is not an abundance of relevant literature,this review identified several factors associated with falls in *** encompass environmental,patient,staff,and medical *** study offers valuable insights for hospitals and medical personnel aiming to enhance fall prevention *** prevention efforts should prioritize early identification of patient risk factors,enhancement of the care environment,thorough training for care staff,and vigilant supervision of high-risk *** comprehending the factors that contribute to patient falls,hospitals can bolster patient safety and mitigate the adverse effects of falls within the health-care setting.

Inter-individual differences in the responses to aerobic exercise in Alzheimer’s disease: Findings from the FIT-AD trial

Background:Despite the strong evidence of aerobic exercise as a disease-modifying treatment for Alzheimer’s disease(AD)in animal models,its effects on cognition are inconsistent in human studies.A major contributor to these findings is inter-individual differences in the responses to aerobic exercise,which was well documented in the general population but not in those with *** purpose of this study was to examine inter-individual differences in aerobic fitness and cognitive responses to a 6-month aerobic exercise intervention in community-dwelling older adults with mild-to-moderate dementia due to ***:This study was a secondary analysis of the Effects of Aerobic Exercise for Treating Alzheimer’s Disease(FIT-AD)trial *** fitness was measured by the shuttle walk test(SWT),the 6-min walk test(6MWT),and the maximal oxygen consumption(VO2max)test,and cognition by the AD Assessment Scale-Cognition(ADAS-Cog).Inter-individual differences were calculated as the differences in the standard deviation of 6-month change(SDR)in the SWT,6MWT,VO2max,and ADAS-Cog between the intervention and control ***:Seventy-eight participants were included in this study(77.4±6.3 years old,mean±SD;15.7±2.8 years of education;41%were female).VO2max was available for 26 participants(77.7±7.1 years old;14.8±2.6 years of education;35%were female).The SDR was 37.0,121.1,1.7,and 2.3 for SWT,6MWT,VO2max,and ADAS-Cog,***:There are true inter-individual differences in aerobic fitness and cognitive responses to aerobic exercise in older adults with mild-tomoderate dementia due to *** inter-individual differences likely underline the inconsistent cognitive benefits in human studies.

Prevalence and predictive factors of elder mistreatment in Chinese migrant families

Objectives:To examine the prevalence of and identify the predictive factors for elder mistreatment(EM)in Chinese migrant ***:This was a cross-sectional study.A total of 489 rural migrant elderly were recruited using multistage sampling technique from communities in Wenzhou city between June 2020 and October *** par ticipants completed the Mini-Cog,and then data were collected in a survey using the 12-Item Shor t-Form Health Survey Questionnaire,Abuser’s Dependency Scale,the Friendship Scale(FS),Intergenerational Ambivalence Scale,Filial Piety Index,the Assessment Tool of Domestic Elder Abuse,and a demographic *** statistics and multiple regression were carried out to analyze the ***:The prevalences of physical mistreatment,psychological mistreatment,neglect,economic mistreatment,and social mistreatment among the migrant elderly were 1.23%,20.65%,22.50%,0.61%,and 9.41%,*** predictive factors were migrant elderlies’mental health status(β=–0.118,Pnursing interventions to promote migrant elderlies’mental health,uphold their children’s FP,and harmonize intergenerational relationship to avoid EM.

Health personnel's experience with resident-centered care in nursing homes in Korea: A qualitative study

Objectives: Changing the culture in nursing homes in South Korea comes with challenges,and the key issues of resident-centered care have been *** study aims to describe health personnel's experience in providing resident-centered care in nursing ***: Qualitative data were collected through individual and focus group interviews consisting of registered nurses (n =4),certified nurse assistants (n =2),and long-term caregivers (n =12) working at nursing homes in South *** participants (n-18) completed the interviews from May to June 2018,and all interviews were recorded,transcribed,and analyzed by employing the content analysis ***: Five main categories are conceptualized: (1) residents' participation in decision making,(2) the sharing of the history and story of residents,(3) the recognition of facility-or task-based attitudes,(4) the guarantee of private time and space for residents,and (5) the need for standardized ***: Results corroborate that health personnel regard resident-centered care as a desirable nursing ***,facility-or task-centered care is the most effective in hectic situations.A standardized protocol on the application of resident-centered care based on the facility-tailored specification is ***,health personnel's perception and practice of resident-centered care can *** nursing intervention programs should be developed after clarifying facility culture.

Dehydration risk factors and outcomes in older people in rural areas

Objective:To determine the risk factors for dehydration in elderly people in one of Elbehira Governorate’s ***:A descriptive correlational design was utilized in this *** study was conducted at Elnemaria village,Markaz Abo Elmatamir,Elbehira Governorate,*** were collected using 3 tools:a structured interviewing questionnaire,a dehydration knowledge questionnaire,and a dehydration risk appraisal ***:The study found that 29.5%of the par ticipants were aged between 65 and *** constituted 51%of the study par *** majority of the study participants regularly took anti-acids,anti-inflammatory drugs,and *** the elderlies comprising the respondents,40%had a low level of knowledge regarding *** than half of the study subjects were at moderate risk for ***:The study showed that half of the par ticipants had diabetes and a medium level of information about *** study also showed in general that the elderly in the village are exposed to a moderate dehydration rate,and there is also a strong relationship between taking different types of medication and the occurrence of dehydration.

Objectives:To examine the level of successful aging and the relationship between successful aging and activities of daily living(ADL),life satisfaction,social support,income,and self-efficacy among community-dwelling elderly in Wenzhou,***:A descriptive correlational design was *** were community-dwelling elderly in 4 districts of Wenzhou,*** random sampling was used to recruit 83 *** participants were screened using the Mini-Cog *** were collected using 6 questionnaires such as a demographic questionnaire,the Successful Aging Inventory(SAI),the Barthel Index for ADL,the Satisfaction With Life Scale(SWLS),the Social Support Rating Scale(SSRS),and the General Self-Efficacy Scale(GSES).Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation ***:The results showed that 53%of the participants had a higher level of successful aging and 43.4%had a moderate level of successful aging with a mean score of 56.76(standard deviation[SD]=12.31).Factors such as elderly income(r=0.73,P<0.001)and self-efficacy(r=0.72,P<0.001)had high correlations with successful aging,whereas ADL(r=0.67,P<0.001),life satisfaction(r=0.63,P<0.001),and social support(r=0.36,P<0.001)had moderate correlations with successful ***:There was a significant positive correlation between successful aging and ADL,life satisfaction,social support,income,and self-efficacy among community-dwelling elderly in Wenzhou,*** findings may guide the formulation of more effective health education and intervention measures to improve successful aging among the elderly.
