Withdrawal Intention of Farmers from Vacant Rural Homesteads and Its Influencing Mechanism in Northeast China: A Case Study of Jilin Province

The effective use of land in Northeast China is of great significance for ensuring national food security and regional rural *** this study,based on the survey data collected from Jilin Province,Northeast China,we analyzed the vacancy rates of rural homesteads in suburban,outer suburban,and remote villages,as well as the withdrawal intention of rural-settled farmers,urbansettled farmers,and farmers with urban and rural dual residency from vacant *** the perspective of farmers’perceptions,this study constructed a theoretical framework of the influence mechanism of their withdrawal intention and analyzed such mechanism by constructing a structural equation *** results indicated that:1)rural homestead vacancy rates increased with distance from the village to the city.2)rural-settled farmers showed a low withdrawal intention for vacant rural homesteads,followed by urban and rural dual-residence farmers,and urban-settled farmers showed the highest withdrawal intention.3)the relative importance of the factors influencing withdrawal intention is in the following order:policy awareness>interest perception>living environment perception>family ***,this study discussed the reformation of the homestead system and rural homestead transition in Northeast China,which can provide policy support to increase the potential of cultivated land and promote sustainable rural development and urban-rural coordination.

Analysis of coastal land use/land cover changes in the Indian Sunderbans using remotely sensed data

The world’s largest mangrove ecosystem,the Sunderbans is experiencing multidimensional threats of *** present study was aimed to understand these problems and search for proper remedies by applying suitable remote sensing ***-western parts of Indian Sunderbans Biosphere Reserve had been chosen for assessment of land use/land cover changes in between 1975 and 2006 by using multitemporal Landsat *** indicated considerable reduction of open mangrove stands and associated biodiversity mainly in the forest-habitation interference zones of *** the contrary,increase in the coverage of dense mangroves in the reserved forests had been observed indicating the existence of proper centralized management ***,a cumulative loss of approximately 0.42%of its original mangrove cover in between 1975 and 2006 had been estimated for this part of the Sunderbans which was at parity with the findings of other studies in the Sunderbans or similar mangrove ecosystems of the *** of non agricultural lands in the last two decades was found to be related with the growth of new settlements,tourism infrastructure,and *** transformation was attributed to the shifting of local peoples’interest from traditional forestry and subsistence farming towards alternative occupations like shrimp culture,coastal tourism,and commercial fishing although environmentally hazardous livelihood activities like collection of prawn seeds along the riverbanks were still persistent.

Spatio-temporal Dynamic of Quality of Life of Residents, Northeast China

Quality of life(QOL) is a hotspot issue that has attracted increasing attention from the Chinese government and scholars, it is also a vital issue that should be addressed during the cause of ′establishing overall well-off society′. Northeast China is one of the most import old industrial bases in China, however, the industrial structure of heavy chemical industry and the development mode of ′production first, living last′ have leaded to series of social problems, which have also become a serious bottleneck to social stability and economic sustainable development. Through applying the methods of BP neural network, exploratory spatial data analysis(ESDA) and spatial regression model, this paper examines the space-time dynamics of QOL of the residents in Northeast China. We first investigate the indexes of QOL of the residents and then use ESDA methods to visualize its space-time relationship. We have found a spatial agglomeration of QOL of the residents in middle-southern Liaoning Province, central Jilin Province and Harbin-Qiqihar-Daqing area of Heilongjiang Province. Two third of the counties are low-low spatial correlation, and the correlative type of about 60% of the prefecture level areas keeps stable, indicating QOL of the residents in Northeast China shows a certain character of path dependence or spatial locked. We have also found that economic strength and development levels of service industry have positive and obvious effect on QOL of the residents, while the effect of such indexes as the social service level and the proportion of the tertiary industries are less.

Perceptual complexity of soil-landscape maps: a user evaluation of color organization in legend designs using eye tracking

We compared the ability of two legend designs on a soil-landscape map to efficiently and effectively support map reading tasks with the goal of better understanding how the design choices affect user *** such knowledge is essential to design effective interfaces for digital earth *** of the two legends contained an alphabetical ordering of categories,while the other used a perceptual grouping based on the Munsell color *** tested the two legends for 4 tasks with 20 experts(in geography-related domains).We analyzed traditional usability metrics and participants’eye movements to identify the possible reasons behind their success and failure in the experimental ***,an overwhelming majority of the participants failed to arrive at the correct responses for two of the four tasks,irrespective of the legend ***,participants’prior knowledge of soils and map interpretation abilities led to interesting performance differences between the two legend *** discuss how participant background might have played a role in performance and why some tasks were particularly hard to solve despite participants’relatively high levels of experience in map *** on our observations,we caution soil cartographers to be aware of the perceptual complexity of soil-landscape maps.

Assessing effectiveness of nature-based solution with big earth data: 60 years mangrove plantation program in Bangladesh coast

Background In the climate change context, nature-based solution(NBS) is considered one of the effective tools to increase the resilience of socio-ecological system. The concept coincides with the government's attempts of afforestation and reforestation programs that have been going on for 60 years in Bangladesh. This study, therefore, envisaged understanding how NBS(mangrove afforestation and reforestation) works to promote climate change resilience through the synthetization of remote sensing-based big earth data, statistical tools, and models. The study took the entire coast of Bangladesh except for Sundarbans Reserve Forest and rolled back to 1962 to work on 60 years' time series data. Declassified CORONA satellite imagery along with Landsat satellite imagery was used, which is the firstever attempt in the remote sensing-based ecosystem work in *** The study's main innovation is to spatially establish the effectiveness of the NBS. The study critically assessed and estimated stable lands and their socio-economic benefits as part of the effectiveness of the NBS. As part of the NBS-derived benefits in the context of climate change, it estimated the sequestrated carbon in mangrove forests.A significant positive relationship was observed between the increase of mangroves and stable lands. Near about 448,011 ha of agricultural land was stabilized due to the NBS intervention whose economic value is 18,837 million USD. In addition, 29,755.71 kt of carbon have been sequestrated due to NBS *** The concept of NBS is still in the development stage and very little or no work has been done so far in measuring and labeling the effectiveness of the NBS. Therefore, our study can innovatively contribute to the scientific community to show the effectiveness of the NBS in three domains(social, economic and ecological) in the changing climatic scenario.

A review of ecological risk assessment and associated health risks with heavy metals in sediment from India

Heavy metal(HM) pollution in sediment is a serious concern particularly in developing nations,warranting an extensive survey to understand the current situation and propose possible remedial *** paper compiles the data of HMs cadmium(Cd),iron(Fe),cobalt(Co),manganese(Mn),arsenic(As),lead(Pb),chromium(Cr),copper(Cu),zinc(Zn) and nickel(Ni) in aquatic sediment from India from 1979 to *** was found that mean values of Cu,Co,Zn,Pb,As,and Cr in Indian sediment were high in comparison to the Australian Interim Sediment Quality Guidelines,World Surface Rock Average,and the Threshold Effect Level for freshwater *** activities,lithogenic factors,and sand intrusion are the main factors associated with HM pollution as observed using cluster analysis and principal component *** results of contamination indices indicate that HM contamination ranged from average to high,in the *** ecological risk assessment results showed that 11%HMs present very high *** cancer risk,due to the high contents of Cd,As,and Cr the ingestion pathway,showed high risk of cancer through food/water contaminated with *** source reduction of HMs in industrial effluents by effluent treatment plants,and plantation of phytoremediating rooted macrophytes in sediment may help in HM mitigation of the sediment.

Application of GIS for the identification and demarcation of selective heavy metal concentrations in the urban groundwater

Groundwater is the most appropriate and widely used source of drinking water, which is increasingly threatened by pollution from industrial and agricultural activities. To check the severity of the problem, 156 groundwater samples were collected from various depths （60-110 ft） of 52 different localities in Faisalabad city, the third largest metropolis in Pakistan, and analyzed for the metals （Zn, Cu, Cd, Ni, Pb, Mn and Fe） concentration in 2009. Quantification was done by using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer technique and the results were compared with WHO standards for drinking water quality. Results showed that the levels of Cu, Mn and Fe were below the WHO standards while the concentrations of Zn, Cd, Ni and Pb were above the recommended levels of safe drinking water. Correlation analysis among the occurrence of these heavy metals revealed a highly significant and positive correlation of Mn with Zn and Fe. A significant and positive correlation of Cd was also found with Cu and groundwater depth showing that there is strong association between Cu-Cd pair and that the Cd concentration varies with depth of groundwater in the study area. Regional patterns of heavy metals occurrence were mapped using Geographical Information System （GIS） for the identification and demarcation of risk areas. The concentration maps may be used by policymakers of the city to mitigate groundwater pollution.

Susceptibility to gravitational processes due to land cover change in the Río Chiquito-Barranca del Muerto subbasin(Pico De Orizaba Volcano, México)

Land cover change can lead to slope instability by accelerating erosive processes associated with agriculture, forestry, and infrastructure. The Rio Chiquito-Barranca del Muerto subbasin has experienced an increase in land cover change due to government programs and the establishment of agricultural and urban areas. The aim of this study was to provide a model to map the susceptibility to gravitational processes along sites where anthropogenic land cover change has *** method was based on the stratification of the subbasin according to landforms and cartographic variables. These variables were used in a multicriteria assessment to assign weights according to their contribution to the onset of new gravitational processes. Those weights were used to create a susceptibility map based on a weighted linear *** accuracy of the resulting map was validated in an error matrix with a random stratified design based on susceptibility classes per landform. The results produced a map of areas with susceptibility to gravitational processes due to land cover change; this susceptibility is very high in the undifferentiated pyroclastic slope and limestone mountain, where it derives not only from anthropogenic effects on natural vegetation cover, but also from steep slopes,weathered materials, low apparent density, high erosivity, and previous gravitational processes. The results support other studies that concluded that loss of vegetation is a triggering factor in the formation of gravitational processes, but also show that excessive reforestation can increase gravitational processes.
