Growth substrates alter aboveground plant microbial and metabolic properties thereby influencing insect herbivore performance

The gut microbiome of plant-eaters is affected by the food they eat,but it is currently unclear how the plant metabolome and microbiome are influenced by the substrate the plant grows in and how this subsequently impacts the feeding behavior and gut microbiomes of insect ***,we use Plutella xylostella caterpillars and show that the larvae prefer leaves of cabbage plants growing in a vermiculite substrate to those from plants growing in conventional soil *** a plant metabolomics analysis,we identified 20 plant metabolites that were related to caterpillar feeding *** a bioassay,the effects of these plant metabolites on insects'feeding were *** and compounds enriched with leaves of soilless cultivation promoted the feeding of insects,while compounds enriched with leaves of plants growing in natural soil decreased *** microbial groups(e.g.,Sporolactobacillus,Haliangium)detected inside the plant correlated with caterpillar feeding performance and other microbial groups,such as Ramlibacter and Methylophilus,correlated with the gut *** results highlight the role of growth substrates on the food metabolome and microbiome and on the feeding performance and the gut microbiome of plant *** illustrates how belowground factors can influence the aboveground properties of plant-animal systems,which has important implications for plant growth and pest control.

Correlating Bladder Cancer Risk Genes with Their Targeting MicroRNAs Using MMiRNA-Tar

The Cancer Genome Arias （TCGA）（http：//***） is a valuable data resource focused on an increasing number of well-characterized cancer genomes. In part, TCGA provides detailed information about cancer-dependent gene expression changes, including changes in the expression of transcription-regulating microRNAs. We developed a web interface tool MMiRNA-Tar （http：f/***-Tar） that can calculate and plot the correlation of expression for mRNA-microRNA pairs across samples or over a time course for a list of pairs under different prediction confidence cutoff criteria. Prediction confidence was estab- lished by requiring that the proposed mRNA-microRNA pair appears in at least one of three target prediction databases： TargetProfiler, TargetScan, or miRanda. We have tested our MMiRNA-Tar tool through analyzing 53 tumor and 11 normal samples of bladder urothelial carcinoma （BLCA） datasets obtained from TCGA and identified 204 microRNAs. These microRNAs were correlated with the mRNAs of five previously-reported bladder cancer risk genes and these selected pairs exhib- ited correlations in opposite direction between the tumor and normal samples based on the cus- tomized cutoff criterion of prediction. Furthermore, we have identified additional 496 genes （830 pairs） potentially targeted by 79 significant microRNAs out of 204 using three cutoff criteria, i.e.,false discovery rate （FDR）〈 0.1, opposite correlation coefficient between the tumor and normal samples, and predicted by at least one of three target prediction databases. Therefore, MMiRNA- Tar provides researchers a convenient tool to visualize the co-relationship between microRNAs and mRNAs and to predict their targeting relationship. We believe that correlating expression profiles for microRNAs and mRNAs offers a complementary approach for elucidating their interactions.

Pollutant dynamics and bioavailability greatly differ in soil and aquatic systems. Therefore, specific approaches and models are needed to assess the impact of soil contamination to terrestrial ecosystems. Earthworms among other soil invertebrates have received more attention because of their ecological importance. They represent a dominant part of the soil biomass and are soil engineers regulating important soil processes, notably fertilization. The release in soils of pollutants known for their persistence and/or their toxicity is a concern. Exposure of terrestrial species to pollutants that may alter genomic function has become an increasing topic of research in the last decade. Indeed, genome disturbances due to genetic and epigenetic mechanisms may impair growth, as well as reproduction and population dynamics in the long term. Despite their importance in gene expres- sion, epigenetic mechanisms are not yet understood in soil invertebrates. Until now, pollutant-induced changes in genome expression in natural biota are still being studied through structural alteration of DNA. The first biomarker relating to genotoxicant exposure in earthworms from multi-contaminated soils reported is DNA adducts measurements. It has been replaced by DNA breakage measured by the Comet assay, now more commonly used. Functional genomic changes are now being explored owing to molecular ＂omic＂ technologies. Approaches, objectives and results are overviewed herein. The focus is on studies dealing with genotoxicity and populational effects established from environmentally-relevant experiments and in situ studies [Current Zoology 60 （2）： 255-272, 2014].

Dynamic Simulations of Post-stall Performance in Multistage Axial Compressors

In this contribution a quasi-one-dimensional tool for stationary and transient simulations of post-stall flows in multistage axial compressors is presented. An adapted version of the 1D Euler equations with additional source terms is discretized with a finite volume method and solved in time by a fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme. The equations are discretized at midspan both inside the blade rows and the non-bladed regions. The source terms express the blade-flow interactions and are estimated by calculating the velocity triangles for each blade row. Loss and deviation correlations are implemented and compared to experimental data in normal flow, stalled flow and reversed flow regions. Transient simulations are carried out and a parameter study is presented to analyze the shape of the surge cycles and the frequency of the surge oscillations. At last, a bleeding control strategy is implemented to study the recoverability of the instabilities in a compression system.

Bio-inspired robotic impedance adaptation for human-robot collaborative tasks

To improve the robotic flexibility and dexterity in a human-robot collaboration task, it is important to adapt the robot impedance in a real-time manner to its partner’s behavior. However, it is often quite challenging to achieve this goal and has not been well addressed yet. In this paper, we propose a bio-inspired approach as a possible solution, which enables the online adaptation of robotic impedance in the unknown and dynamic environment. Specifically, the bio-inspired mechanism is derived from the human motor learning, and it can automatically adapt the robotic impedance and feedforward torque along the motion trajectory. It can enable the learning of compliant robotic behaviors to meet the dynamic requirements of the interactions. In order to validate the proposed approach, an experiment containing an anti-disturbance test and a human-robot collaborative sawing task has been conducted.

The Immune System and the Role of Inflammation in Perinatal Depression

Major depression during pregnancy is a common psychiatric disorder that arises from a complex and mul- tifactorial etiology. Psychosocial stress, sex, hormones, and genetic vulnerability increase the risk for triggering mood disorders. Microglia and toll-like receptor 4 play a crucial role in triggering wide and varied stress-induced responses mediated through activation of the inflammasome; this leads to the secretion of inflammatory cytokines, increased serotonin metabolism, and reduction of neurotransmitter availability along with hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis hyperactivity. Dysregulation of this intricate neu- roimmune communication network during pregnancy modifies the maternal milieu, enhancing the emergence of depressive symptoms and negative obstetric and neu- ropsychiatric outcomes. Although several studies have clearly demonstrated the role of the innate immune system in major depression, it is still unclear how the placenta, the brain, and the monoaminergic and neuroendocrine systems interact during perinatal depression. Thus, in the present review we describe the cellular and molecular interactions between these systems in major depression during preg- nancy, proposing that the same stress-related mechanisms involved in the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome in microglia and peripheral myeloid cells in depressed patients operate in a similar fashion in the neuroimmune placenta during perinatal depression. Thus, activation of Toll-like receptor 2 and 4 signaling and the NLRP3 inflammasome in placental immune cells may promote a shift of the Thl/Th2 bias towards a predominant Thl/Thl7 inflammatory response, associated with increased secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, among other secreted autocrine and paracrine mediators, which play a crucial role in triggering and/or exacerbating depressive symptoms during pregnancy.

Advanced prediction of organic–metal interactions through DFT study and electrochemical displacement approach

Heterocyclic compounds are the promising biological compounds as nature-friendly for the corrosion protection of metallic *** this work,three heterocyclic compounds such as 1-azanaphthalene-8-ol(8-AN),2-methylquinoline-8-ol(8-MQ),and 8-quinolinol-5-sulfonic acid(8-QSA)were used as green compounds,and their anti-corrosion performance for AZ31 Mg in saline water was discussed on the basis of impedance interpretation and surface *** found that the electrochemical performance was improved in the order of 8-AN>8-MQ>8-QSA,demonstrating the electron donor effect of N-heterocycles to form coordination complexes on the magnesium *** the electrochemical performance,the protective layer constructed at the optimal concentration reinforces the barrier against aggressive environments,with potential inhibition efficiency of 87.4%,99.0%,and 99.9%for 8-QSA,8-MQ,and 8-AN,*** chemical parameters and electron density distribution for free organic species in the absence and presence of Mg^(2+)cation were evaluated using density functional theory(DFT).Upon the formation of coordination complexes between organic compound and Mg^(2+),energy gap underwent change about ΔE=5.7 eV in the 8-AN/Mg^(2+)***,the adsorption of heterocyclic compounds on Mg surface reveals the formation of strong covalent bonds with Mg atoms,which further confirmed by the electron density difference and projected density of states *** on theoretical calculations,three inhibitors can adsorb on the metal surface in both parallel and perpendicular orientations via C,O and N *** the parallel configuration,the C-Mg,N-Mg and O-Mg bond distances are between 2.11 and 2.25˚A,whereas the distances in the case of perpendicular adsorption are between 2.20 and 2.40˚A(covalent bonds via O and N atoms).The results indicated that parallel configurations are energetically more stable,in which the adsorption energies are-4.48 eV(8-AN),-4.28 eV(8-MQ)and-3.82 e
