Four new species of Orchidaceae from China,Heminium lijiangense,Peristylus fasciculatus,Platanthera milinensis,and Ponerorchis gongshanensis,together with a new country record,Peristylus tenuicallus,are described and illustrated based on morphological and/or phylogenetic *** lijiangense is closely related to *** but differs from it by having the dorsal sepal ovate-orbicular and lip midlobe distinctly shorter than lateral *** is close to Peristylus tradescantifolius but is distinguished from it by having several fascicled and straight,root-like tubers(*** or two oblongoid tubers),old stems usually persistent,middle lobe of lip narrowly ligulate-lanceolate and half as long as the lateral lobes(*** lobe deltoid,about a third as long as the lateral lobes or less),a raised callus at the base of each lateral lobe(*** absent),spur gradually attenuate toward the apex(*** clavate).Platanthera milinensis is similar to *** by sharing small green flowers and lip without a spur,but differs in having a creeping rhizome,a corymbose inflorescence,and a broadly ovate and slightly 3-lobed *** gongshanensis is similar to *** in its small flowers,but differs in having a linear leaf c.3 mm wide(*** 5-13 mm wide),in the lip having collar-like raised margins on the sides of the spur entrance,and a mid-lobe which is notched at the apex but not divided into two divergent lobules that are nearly as large as the lateral lobes,as in *** the proposed species obtained high support in phylogenetic analysis as new *** recently described genus Apetalanthe is reduced to synonymy of Ponerorchis and a new combination is made.

Re-evaluating data quality of dog mitochondrial,Y chromosomal,and autosomal SNPs genotyped by SNP array

Quality deficiencies in single nucleotide polymorphism （SNP） analyses have important implications. We used missingness rates to investigate the quality of a recently published dataset containing 424 mitochonddal, 211 Y chromosomal, and 160 432 autosomal SNPs generated by a semicustom Illumina SNP array from 5 392 dogs and 14 grey wolves. Overall, the individual missingness rate for mitochondrial SNPs was -43.8%, with 980 （18.1%）individuals completely missing mitochondrial SNP genotyping （missingness rate=l）. In males, the genotype missingness rate was -28.8% for Y chromosomal SNPs, with 374 males recording rates above 0.96. These 374 males also exhibited completely failed mitochondrial SNPs genotyping, indicative of a batch effect. Individual missingness rates for autosomal markers were greater than zero, but less than 0.5. Neither mitochondrial nor Y chromosomal SNPs achieved complete genotyping （locus missingness rate=0）, whereas 5.9% of autosomal SNPs had a locus missingness rate=l. The high missingness rates and possible batch effect show that caution and rigorous measures are vital when genotyping and analyzing SNP array data for domestic animals. Further improvements of these arrays will be helpful to future studies.

Leguminosae,the thirdly largest family of the angiosperm,is diverse in morphology,ecology and *** phylogenetic reconstructions of the Leguminosae based on one or a few genes have not resolved many deep phylogenetic relationships or some nodes only obtained low *** applied 151 complete/nearly complete plastomes of 187 species representing all 36 tribes and most major clades of six subfamilies to infer phylogenetic *** reconstructions were conducted on both coding and noncoding regions with various pruning and partitioning *** of our analyses fully resolved the deep relationships of legume with strong statistical support at most nodes,which are generally congruent with the those in previous studies but with some interesting *** deep relationships and some short internodes of Leguminosae were strongly supported both in coding and noncoding data sets but conflict relationships were *** phylogenetic signal analyses for all matrices,we detected conflict phylogenetic signals between coding and noncoding regions,and also among some coding loci at these *** phylogenomics offers new and important insights into deep phylogenetic relationships of *** robust phylogenetic backbone reconstructed in this study establish a framework for future studies on classification,evolution and diversification of this important family.

Palaeo-biome reconstructions have inferred that the subtropical evergreen broadleaved forests（EBLFs） in East Asia contracted to a narrow belt south of 24°N during the Last Glacial Maximum（LGM）,whereas various phylogeographical studies of subtropical plants have inferred glacial refugia north of this ***,we aim to elucidate the historical dynamics of EBLFs during the Quaternary,using Lindera aggregata as a *** history of *** were investigated based on 19 sampled populations using four chloroplast DNA（cpDNA） fragments,15 low-copy nuclear genes（LCGs） and ecological niche *** observed a shallow and star-like cpDNA network with one dominant *** time to the most recent common ancestor（TMRCA） was estimated to be 1.78 Myr by secondary calibrations using four calibration *** LCGs revealed three distinct genetic clusters that reflected contrasting historical population *** most ancient cluster was located south of the Nanling and Wuyi Mountain belts and experienced long-term in-situ *** area further north was occupied by two disjunct clusters that dated back to the LGM and showed signatures of a rapid northward *** detected pollen-mediated secondary admixture between all three clusters including somewhat preferential southward gene *** study fully supports and further refines the emerging view that many EBLF taxa could maintain populations in southern subtropical China during the LGM but not further *** evidence suggests a marked latitudinal gradient in the historical conservation and postglacial re-establishment of EBLFs,which would have benefitted from local sources in the south while depending more strongly on longdistance colonisation further north.

Descriptions of floral traits based on the visual capabilities of pollinators would advance our understanding of flower evolution and plantepollinator *** such trait is the contrasting UV bullseye color pattern,which is invisible to human eyes but can be perceived by bee ***,it remains largely unknown how UV bullseye size affects male and female reproductive *** examined UV bullseye patterns in the dioecious Herpetospermum pedunculosum,and quantified the effects of UV bullseye size on male and female *** UV bullseye size and flower size were larger in male flowers than in female *** dominant pollinators of *** were bees,which could perceive the UV bullseye *** pollinators exhibited a preference for male flowers with nectar rewards,and visited a greater number of male flowers on plants with a larger UV *** reproductive fitness was found to decrease in plants with larger UV bullseyes,likely due to the high rate of intra-plant pollen *** female flowers were less attractive to bee pollinators,resulting in pollen limitation of seed *** flowers with moderate UV bullseye size produced more *** results suggest that UV bullseye is subject to different selection via male and female fitness of *** with deceptive pollination,and large UV bullseye is generally not *** research is the first to examine the relationship between UV bullseye size and plant reproductive success,highlighting that floral evolution should be investigated from the pollinator's eye in future research.

The angiosperm family Elaeagnaceae comprises three genera and ca.100 species distributed mainly in Eurasia and North *** family-wide phylogenetic and biogeographic research on Elaeagnaceae has been conducted,limiting the application and preservation of natural genetic ***,we reconstructed a strongly supported phylogenetic framework of Elaeagnaceae to better understand interand intrageneric relationships,as well as the origin and biogeographical history of the *** this purpose,we used both nuclear and plastid sequences from Hyb-Seq and genome skimming approaches to reconstruct a well-supported phylogeny and,along with current distributional data,infer historical biogeographical *** phylogenetic analyses of both nuclear and plastid data strongly support the monophyly of Elaeagnaceae and each of the three *** was resolved as sister to the well-supported clade of Hippophae and *** intrageneric relationships of Elaeagnus and Hippophae were also well *** levels of nuclear gene tree conflict and cytonuclear discordance were detected within Elaeagnus,and our analyses suggest putative ancient and recent *** inferred that Elaeagnaceae originated at ca.90.48 Ma(95%CI?89.91e91.05 Ma),and long-distance dispersal likely played a major role in shaping its intercontinentally disjunct *** work presents the most comprehensive phylogenetic framework for Elaeagnaceae to date,offers new insights into previously unresolved relationships in Elaeagnus,and provides a foundation for further studies on classification,evolution,biogeography,and conservation of Elaeagnaceae.

Dynamic system uncertainty propagation using polynomial chaos

The classic polynomial chaos method（PCM）, characterized as an intrusive methodology,has been applied to uncertainty propagation（UP） in many dynamic systems. However, the intrusive polynomial chaos method（IPCM） requires tedious modification of the governing equations, which might introduce errors and can be impractical. Alternative to IPCM, the non-intrusive polynomial chaos method（NIPCM） that avoids such modifications has been developed. In spite of the frequent application to dynamic problems, almost all the existing works about NIPCM for dynamic UP fail to elaborate the implementation process in a straightforward way, which is important to readers who are unfamiliar with the mathematics of the polynomial chaos theory. Meanwhile, very few works have compared NIPCM to IPCM in terms of their merits and applicability. Therefore, the mathematic procedure of dynamic UP via both methods considering parametric and initial condition uncertainties are comparatively discussed and studied in the present paper. Comparison of accuracy and efficiency in statistic moment estimation is made by applying the two methods to several dynamic UP problems. The relative merits of both approaches are discussed and summarized. The detailed description and insights gained with the two methods through this work are expected to be helpful to engineering designers in solving dynamic UP problems.

Determining whether the high-latitude Bering land bridge(BLB)was ecologically suitable for the migration of mesothermal plants is significant for Holarctic phytogeographic *** studies provide a critical source of data on the latitudinal positions of different plant lineages at different times,permitting assessment of the efficacy of the BLB for *** we report exceptionally preserved fossils of Firmiana and Tilia endochrysea from the middle Miocene of South *** represents a new reliable record of Firmiana and the first discovery of the *** lineage in the fossil record of *** occurrence of these fossils in South Korea indicates that the two lineages had a distribution that extended much farther north during the middle Miocene,but they were still geographically remote from the *** light of the broader fossil record of Asia,our study shows that,in the middle Miocene,some mesothermal plants apparently inhabited the territory adjacent to the BLB and thus they were possibly capable of utilizing the BLB as a migratory *** other mesothermal plants,such as Firmiana and the *** lineages,however,are restricted to more southern regions relative to the BLB based on current fossil *** lineages may have been ecologically unable to traverse the BLB,which raises questions about the efficacy of the BLB as a universal exchange route for mesothermal plants between Asia and North America during the middle Miocene.
